The Dinosaur Jr. set opening for Sonic Youth last week at Terminal 5 was a condensed version of the band’s current show. After opening with a few classic nuggets, the band then performed several songs from the excellent new album Farm, before closing with “Freak Scene” and another early-era shredder, in this case “Gargoyle”. We expect the set to be fleshed out for the two shows that Dinosaur Jr. will play in NYC next month — January 16 at Bowery Ballroom and January 17 at Music Hall of Williamsburg (we’ll be there).

Acidjack recorded this set from the same location at the Sonic Youth recording and the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Lou Barlow: October 6, 2009 Mercury Lounge – Flac and MP3 Downloads

Lou Barlow released his second proper album Goodnight Unknown on Tuesday. That night at Mercury Lounge, Lou celebrated the album’s release with the only headlining show on this current tour. The balance of the dates are opening slots for Lou’s other band, Dinosaur Jr. The result was a two-hour show that not only featured a set with his current backing band, The Missingmen, but also a complete hour of Lou solo, taking requests and playing a ton of rare material including eleven Sebadoh songs. This show was a fan’s delight, as Lou was his usual gregarious self but also took chances and played songs that he had not performed live in years, or in several cases, decades.

I recorded this show with a pair of microphones set up in the usual location next to the soundboard booth, supplemented with a stereo feed from the board. The major flaw in this recording was a persistent buzz or hum coming from stage. During the show, the crowd made reference to this noise on several occasions and Lou even acknowledged it (Track 39). If the listener can subconsciously filter the noise, this is a very enjoyable and listenable recording. Enjoy!

Dinosaur Jr. September 26, 2008 Terminal 5 – Flac and MP3 Downloads

We have a particular affinity for Dinosaur Jr. here at nyctaper. It was our recording of them in the first few weeks of this site that put us “on the map” as it were. A year and a half ago, that concert exceeded all of our expectations. Last night at Terminal 5, Dinosaur Jr. exhibited an energy and level of proficiency that completely floored us — the band was even better than last time. Lou Barlow was energetic, animated and played frenetic bass guitar, and Murph was pounding furiously and filling up the huge room with his pinpoint beat. But it was the guitar work of J Mascis which most impressed us. As he stood played in front of his huge stacks of Marshall amps, J absolutely shredded every solo — and in particular his extended work in “Pick Me Up” and “Gargoyle” was simply outstanding.

We recorded this set from the identical location as the Built to Spill recording. However, the massive volume of this set virtually eliminated all crowd noise so that this is a cleaner recording. Enjoy!

This recording is now available in FLAC and MP3 at the Dinosaur Jr. Archives at Free So Free [HERE].

Dinosaur Jr. at Irving Plaza 2007 – lossless download

June 7, 2007

When I first heard “Freak Scene” in 1988, I was absolutely floored. This was the dense guitar-driven post-punk to which I’d been listening since Mission of Burma through Husker Du, and now it had been taken to the next level. The Bug album essentially defines the genre, and stand as the epitome of the music that would later be co-opted by the media, and mass-marketed as watered down “grunge”.

In 1989, I did manage to see them live, and my ears are still ringing:

The original lineup of the great Dinosaur Jr. would only last through Bug, as bassist Lou Barlow quit in 1989. Ultimately the band did last into the mid-90’s, and then faded from consciousness, only to be reborn with the 2005 reunion. On June 6, 2007, I experienced another blast of sonic genius at Irving Plaza. The recording below captures the 2007 version of Dinosaur Jr. at their peak—older, wiser, and a tighter than the 1989 incarnation.

This recording was made from a prime location, with my best equipment. The results are outstanding. The band permits live audience recordings, and as a result, many of their live recordings are archived for our enjoyment at the excellent site FreeSoFree.

This recording is now available at the excellent FreeSoFree Dinosaur Jr. Archive [HERE].
