The National: December 8, 2010 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The National last played NYC at Terminal 5 in July, a concert we covered for the site. Its hard to imagine that we would next see a band of that stature in Maxwell’s, but the Yo La Tengo Hanukkah shows bring surprises of all sizes. Although we were clued into this appearance earlier in the week (and the Village Voice spread our tweet), it was still pretty surreal to see the National take the stage in front of a hundred or so people. The band and their mini horn section managed to fit pretty comfortably on the stage, and they worked through a shortened version of the standard set. In a brief conversation I had with Bryce before the show, he remembered that the band had played Maxwell’s several times early in their history, and there were references during the show to those times. Despite how far they’ve come, The National still retain their perspective and the material was as authentic and powerful up close in the intimate venue as it was in the large ones they play now. The National will spend much of the first half of 2011 on tour in Europe, but we expect to see them again in NYC this Summer, although never again at a venue this compact.

We recorded this set with all six of our high-end microphones mixed in eight channels with a slight board mix. We used the Neumann’s for clarity, the DPAs for warmth and the Schoeps for the low end. The results are pretty outstanding. Enjoy!

Dinowalrus: November 16, 2010 Knitting Factory – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The Brooklyn band Dinowalrus has executed a bit of a reboot lately, changing both their personnel and their approach. The former Titus Andronicus guitarist Pete Feigenbaum, the band’s frontman and guitarist, has added a new player on bass, Liam Andrew, as well as Depreciation Guild drummer Anton Hoccheim, and has sought to clarify some of the ideas explored on the band’s debut LP, %. One of the band’s goals, as they put it, is to be “structurally unorthodox,” but at times that led to performances that lacked focus – it could seem that one song was a jumble of concepts rather than a unified whole. This show at the Knitting Factory showcased both reworked arrangements of their older material as well as new songs that continue the band’s love affair with Krautrock, acid rock, noise, thrash punk and psychedelia, but have much more musical consistency and pop sensibility. Listen to “RICO” below and see if you agree. The band’s new approach has already received positive notice in several publications, and we expect that trend to continue in 2011. We still have no idea what the hell a “Dinowalrus” is, but now we can say that this musical creature is a strange beast with a purpose.

I recorded this set with the DPA microphones at the soundboard. They captured the excellent house mix by Rob of the Knitting Factory perfectly. Enjoy!

Built to Spill: October 5, 2010 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Samples

In spite of their extensive touring and the considerable number of gigs they’ve played in the NYC area in recent times, it had been a few years since my last Built to Spill concert and the anticipation for this one was awfully high.  Suffice to say, I wasn’t disappointed; the show that the band put on, along with the songs they chose to play, made it worth the wait.  Beginning with the vibrantly melodic “Traces”, the group pulled tracks from most of their albums, threw in a cover of the Grateful Dead’s “Ripple” and ended with a one-two punch of the often-requested (at least on this night) crowd pleaser “Car” and “Virginia Reel Around the Fountain” from Doug Martsch’s side project, the Halo Benders.  All in all, a wonderful show to reacquaint me with the band after my hiatus.

We taped this show from the dead-center spot on the balcony, right above the soundboard.  Aside from the house mix being a touch bass-heavy in our location, the resultant recording is indicative of the very good to excellent audio that’s typical of this venue and sounds great.  Hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!

Pavement: September 23, 2010 Central Park Summerstage – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Sample

Matt from Fluxblog described Thursday night’s Pavement show in an interview with NPR as “kinda tired, odd moods, a bit sloppier, definitely just kinda weird and goofy.” Matt is a bright and perceptive guy — his music writing is some of the best on the web. But in this case, he’s dead wrong. I have the audio proof to offer you. Pavement’s performance was loose, but that’s their forte. But there is no denying the energy of the individual performances from this show, not the least of which was the moment early in the set when the full band kicked in on “Gold Soundz” at the very point where the full moon illuminated the post-dusk night air. The band kept up the pace for twenty minutes straight through a screaming, manic version of “Unfair”, when they finally took a breath to wish a fan happy birthday and slowed things down with “Spit On A Stranger”. Far from sloppy or tired, Malkmus vocals on “Stranger” were confident and relaxed. The show kicked back into high gear with the heavy sounds of “Rattled” and “Stereo”. The band then whipped out rarely played (first of the tour) “Loretta’s Scars” (streaming below). “That was pretty good, and I’ve been there for all three times we played it, good job guys”, mused Malkmus. The band recovered from a slight snafu at the opening of “Stop Breathin'” to reclaim an inspired version of the Crooked Rain, Crooked Rain classic. Malkmus spoke sincerely about how “Cut Your Hair” had changed his life before delving into perhaps the band’s most well-known number. The jammy “Fight This Generation”, superb guitar work on “Fin”, and the band’s other “hit” “Summer Babe” were among the closing tracks in this outstanding main set. The encore “set” consisted of 8 songs and one apparent “tease”, offering the packed Summerstage crowd a neat two-hour, twenty-eight song epic show.

I recorded this set with the four-mic rig from the front of the soundboard cage, about 100 feet from the stage. While the distance and wind were factors, the Neumann hypers raised to 13 feet captured the high end, and the DPAs at 10 feet secured the bass presence. Overall, I’m pleased with the quality of this recording. Enjoy!

Pavement: September 21, 2010 Central Park Summerstage – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Pavement put the tickets for the Central Park Summerstage shows in Manhattan on sale about a year ago.  The resulting advanced planning (or lack of skill at planning/holding onto tickets) of indie fans was even the subject of a recent New Yorker piece.  The good news about doing things this way was that (a) Pavement sold the shows out and (b) cheap tickets were available for fans day-of.

Those who weren’t daunted by the advanced planning were rewarded by what I believe to have been the best of the three Pavement shows I had (to this point) seen this year.  The band was in a jokey mood, the weather was perfect (about the opposite of Wednesday’s experience), and the set was loose, jammy and ten minutes longer than the already very long Williamsburg Waterfront show.  This show saw the band bust out several tunes not played at the Williamsburg show, including “In the Mouth of a Desert”, “Debris Slide,” “Shoot the Singer”, “Heaven Is A Truck” and the rarest inclusion (which was not on the official setlist), “Perfect Depth.”  Expectations could not have been higher for a show that went on sale a year ago, but Pavement still gave us more than we could ever have hoped.

This set was recorded with DPA 4021 mics mounted 12 feet in the air at the soundboard next to the JetBlue VIP area, unlike the mobile rig that I “stack taped” with on Sunday.  The sound is therefore more stereo balanced, but reflects that the recording was made at a much greater distance from the source.  There are also a couple of short spots of wind noise.

Wednesday’s show was also recorded using the mobile rig upfront and, miraculously (given the rain), sounds excellent.  We expect to post that recording, along with recordings of Thursday and Friday’s shows, to the site later this week or early next week.

Dirty Projectors: September 11, 2010 Terminal 5 – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

It’s a tribute to the quality of an artist and its sound engineer, when a band with music and harmonies as intricate as the Dirty Projectors can sound as excellent as they do on this recording.  At Terminal 5 last Saturday, September 11, the Projectors tour in support of the expanded edition of ‘Bitte Orca (due September 27) arrived in NYC.  Even on a night when indie fans had other choices for music, the band’s increasing popularity resulted in a sell-out of this large venue.  The highlights of the set included a superb “Temecula Sunrise” (streaming below), and the beautiful performance of “Two Doves” featuring Angel Deradoorian.

Johnny recorded this set with a four-microphone rig from up in the first balcony at the soundboard.  The AKG’s capture the vocals well, while the DPA’s are excellent for the rich bass presence.  This recording is perhaps the best we’ve ever captured in this venue.  Enjoy!

Lymbyc Systym: September 18, 2010 Studio BPM – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Brothers Jared and Michael Bell of Lymbyc Systym have had the advantage of making music together since they were preteens, sure, but still, the synergy and skill they brought to this DIY show at Studio BPM was startling.  Their sound, a blend of electronic music, jazz and experimental rock, evinces such diverse acts as Tortoise and Explosions in the Sky.  What is remarkable about the brothers Bell, though, is that they sound like a five-man band using only two players: Mike on the drums and Jared on the various keys.   Originally from Tempe, AZ, since their founding in 2001, the band has traveled the country with a wide array of like-minded acts such as The Album Leaf and Broken Social Scene, and recently completed a monthslong tour of Asia.  This set included two of the band’s contributions to their recent Field Studies split EP with This Will Destroy You, “Narita” and “Notations”.  Studio BPM made an ideal setting for this music, with an intimate atmosphere, high quality sound system, and rapt crowd.

I recorded this set with a stereo soundboard feed blended with the DPA mics on a stand on the floor.  The sound quality is outstanding.  Enjoy!

Kelli Scarr: August 21, 2010 Backyard Brunch Sessions – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Sample

She is perhaps best known as the vocalist for Moby on Wait for Me and his most recent tours, but Kelli Scarr is an accomplished artist in her own right. In the afternoon following the release party for her debut album Piece, Kelli performed a brief set at the fifth installment of the Backyard Brunch series. The band adapted well to the acoustic setting, as Kelli remained seated with an acoustic guitar and bassist Andrew Southern moved to second guitar. The format was also quite an excellent showcase for multi-instrumentalist Jonathan Lam, whose mandolin work was superb, and for Jo Schornikow’s sweet harmonies and keyboards. Kelli’s set was relaxed and fit well within the informal atmosphere, and her humor was particularly required for the persistent fly-over airplanes (slightly audible on the recording). Kelli’s next NYC show will be at Joe’s Pub on Thursday October 7.

This set was recorded with four microphones placed strategically around the band. Other than the airplanes, the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

The Black Keys: July 28, 2010 Terminal 5 – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Samples

I don’t know how these guys do it.  In little more than a 24-hour period, The Black Keys played three full gigs here in New York City.  One of them, the second of two dates at Central Park’s SummerStage, was right before this performance.  I got tired just watching them.  On top of that, they always aim to please and are consistently one of the best live acts that you will see.  Every time I’ve been to a Black Keys concert, I’ve invariably met (or brought) someone who’s never been to one of their shows and every time, when the lights come up, I see that “whoa!” look on their faces.  It thrills me to no end.

Aside from incorporating a heavy dose of songs from the recent ‘Brothers‘ album, the setlist didn’t vary wildly from their last stint at Terminal 5.  Not to say there weren’t any other changes: since May, Dan Auerbach and Patrick Carney have been bringing Leon Michaels, on keyboards, and Nick Movshon, on bass, out to play “Same Old Thing” and the ‘Brothers‘ material.  Effectively, turning the stalwart duo into a four-piece for the first time in a live setting.  The purists might cry heresy, but it adds a great dimension to their sound.  And judging from the crowd’s reaction, I’m not the only one who thinks so.  I make no secret of my admiration for this band and they’ve certainly earned it.

Thanks to the help of our new pals, Ryan and Frank, we were able to secure the dead-center spot on the balcony directly behind the soundboard.  The recording is excellent and, apart from getting louder as the night progressed, about as good as it gets in this venue.  Hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!

It’s always a great thing when you show up early enough at a concert to catch the opening acts you’re not familiar with and they wind up impressing you.  Peter Wolf Crier is such a band.  I hadn’t heard of the Peter Pisano and Brian Moen indie/alt-rock duo before but I’ll be keeping track of them.  They remind me a bit of a Greg Markel-era Prime Movers or if Radiohead had started out as a two-piece and Thom Yorke wasn’t so maudlin, they might sound like this.  It doesn’t hurt that Pisano’s voice is a little like Jeff Buckley’s with a shot of testosterone.  Closing with their brilliant take on a Nick Drake song ended the set wonderfully and the folks in attendance that night were treated to another pleasant surprise when Peter joined the Heartless Bastards during their encore.  I’m looking forward to the next time these guys are in town.

We recorded this set from the same spot on the balcony as Heartless Bastards and it came out very good.  Hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!
