Ty Segall and the Freedom Band: October 2, 2019 Bowery Ballroom

Ty Segall is really good at music. I mean seriously, this guy has the most prolific catalog in recent memory, but is also a master at a litany of genres, and consistently releases high quality material. There’s an argument that Ty Segall is the most accomplished rock musician of this century. No, really, just take a look at his enormous body of work and its hard to argue against its superior quality.

We have been there for many of his NYC performances, going all the way back to the early years in the tiny DIY rooms but also conversely for two of his Webster Hall appearances. I’m not sure exactly why its been a few years since we last saw Ty, but within about 10 minutes of experiencing this magical night at Bowery Ballroom we immediately remembered why we’ve sought out this artist’s shows for many years. He’s simply a kinetic bundle of talent and energy, and now he’s surrounded himself with an all-star team of virtuoso friends that has become the “Freedom Band” for the last three albums.

Ty Segall’s most recent album, First Take, features the Freedom Band but reportedly has no guitars. The newest band member Shannon Lay plays a bouzouki, a Greek stringed instrument that resembles a guitar, so the idea that one of the world’s most prominent garage rock icons would forsake the guitar is a good cover story, but the reality is that the album doesn’t need guitars. The variety of instruments played by the Freedom Band more than fills the gaps on an album of great imagination and songcraft. As with Ty’s 2018 release Freedom’s Goblin, the artist’s moving away from restrictive genres is in its way his own statement about the evolution of his career — his freedom from labels if you will.

At Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday night, First Taste was played start to finish as the first half of the show. Spoiler alert, Ty did play guitar during quite a few of the tracks, but stepped behind a front-of-stage drum kit for about half the numbers. Often accompanied by two bass guitars and two keyboardists, the new songs feature heavy rhythms, dense melodies, and often harmonized vocals. Sure, there’s some good old punk rock in the mix, but by the time the final number “Lone Cowboys” was performed, it was clear that 2019 Ty Segall is a very different and far more diverse artist than a decade before.

So, what did he do with the rest of the show — surprise! The band stepped back almost a decade for a straight-through performance of 2010’s Melted, Ty’s third album and the first of his many many releases to really stretch its wings beyond straightforward garage punk. But other than not sitting behind the drum kit again, Ty’s approach to this music was not so radically different from the “first set”. The Freedom Band put its stamp on this music and in a way proved that even 2010 Ty Segall was ahead of his time.

Its not often when a musician can play a two-hour show with literally no gaps of energy or interest, but that is exactly what Ty Segall is doing these days. By compiling a band of maestros to compliment his newest and most ambitious material, this artist is maturing into a true composer. As the show both looks forward and nods with respect to the past, its is clear that Ty Segall is an all-timer and we are fortunate that an artist of this caliber is sharing these moments. The Bowery show was very clearly the best concert I’ve seen this year, and one of the best I’ve seen this decade and yes, I was lucky to be there and to capture it.

Circuit des Yeux: November 15, 2017 Rough Trade NYC

Of all the many, many standout shows I’ve seen this year, Haley Fohr is responsible for two of them, both at Rough Trade NYC. There was the Jackie Lynn set from back in April, and now this full-band Circuit des Yeux burner from the current Reaching For Indigo tour. I’m a fan, obviously, but everyone I’ve talked to who saw this or another show from the tour have all been completely blown away. Fohr and her band play the album all the way through and even if you’ve fully absorbed the studio recordings you’ll be ecstatic to hear this ten-minute, rocking rendition of “A Story of This World Part II.” Circuit des Yeux hits the West Coast in January followed by some European dates in February—check all listings over at Drag City.

I recorded this from the soundboard cage with MBHOs combined with a board feed courtesy of FOH Dustin Myers. The sound is terrific. Enjoy!

Sir Richard Bishop: May 17, 2017 Park Church Co-op

What’s in a guitar? Two years back, Sir Richard Bishop released Tangier Sessions, recorded on a nineteenth-century guitar of indeterminate origin bought in Switzerland. But last week at Park Church Co-op, he was back to his trusty electric and sounding fine. It turns out Bishop sounds great no matter what he’s playing. I daresay he’d conjure some fine tunes out of any instrument you set before him. This set captures him playing a couple off Tangier Sessions (“International Zone” and “Safe House”) combined with some Sun City Girls classics I hadn’t heard him play in a while like “Radio Morocco” and “Space Prophet Dogon.” Topping it off is Bishop’s sweet take on The Beatles “Till There Was You.”

I recorded this with the room mics set up ORTF at the stage lip, combined with a board feed from Park Church engineer Jasno Swarez. It sounds excellent. Enjoy!

Tim Presley: January 26, 2017 The Bowery Ballroom

Though we’re well acquainted with White Fence, Tim Presley has for the time being shelved that band in favor of going solo under his own name. The first record to appear as such is the The Wink, a buzzed and jittery work which was produced by Welsh musician Cate Le Bon, also Presley’s touring partner. The album is a departure from the fuzzy garage psych of White Fence, as Le Bon’s presence pushes Presley into intimate and unexplored territory. As I mentioned in my review of her set from the same night, Le Bon and her band also backed Presley for his opening set. Listening to the two side-by-side, you’ll notice a cohesive presence and song structure between them. Presley and band played the entirety of The Wink, in order, save for “Moment,” from his experimental W-X side project. Incidentally, no White Fence tunes were played until Cate Le Bon’s encore when she and Presley did a duet on “Chairs in the Dark.”

I recorded this set from our usual location in the venue slightly to the left of soundboard in the balcony area, with a board feed from Bowery FOH Kenny. As usual for the venue, the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Meg Baird: January 22, 2017 Park Church Co-op

Finally capping off our coverage of the epic Ranaldo-Gunn-Baird tour of 2017—last but certainly not least—here’s Meg Baird’s opening set. We’ve long been fans of everything Meg Baird, from Espers to her solo work to the Baird Sisters to Heron Oblivion, but we haven’t yet had occasion to post a solo set until now. This recording captures Baird on the last date of her two-week tour with Lee Ranaldo and Steve Gunn (those sets posted here and here, respectively) and finds her playing a couple songs off her latest solo record for Drag City, Don’t Weigh Down the Light, along with a few covers: “Old Man on the Mountain” from fellow traveler P.G. Six, “Beatles and the Stones” by The House of Love, and the traditional Scottish folk song “Willie O’Winsbury.”  It’s been an emotional couple weeks for all, and Baird provides a touching introduction introduction to “Willie O’Winsbury,” describing the unique ability of traditional songs to communicate with us through time. Only a little over a week old, this set nonetheless feels like a transmission from the distant past. Our work continues… But in the meantime, feel free to accept into your life those small joys, like this gorgeous acoustic guitar set from Meg Baird.

I recorded this set from my improvised tapers section in front of board, combined with a feed from Park Church’s engineer Jasno Swarez. Despite some ambient noise from the church, the sound is very good. Enjoy—and resist!

Cate Le Bon: January 26, 2017 The Bowery Ballroom

Cate Le Bon’s been awfully busy since we last saw her in 2014: in 2016 she released her fourth (and excellent) LP, Crab Day; she produced Tim Presley’s (also excellent) LP, The Wink; and last Friday she put out a followup to Crab Day, the companion EP Rock Pool. Fittingly, on her current tour with Tim Presley, Le Bon is pulling a double shift, contributing guitar and vocals in Presley’s backing band before playing her own headlining set. I’ll talk more about Presley’s set when we post it shortly, but the music on The Wink is so informed by Le Bon’s production that the night felt less like two co-headlining sets and more like a conjoined, ongoing collaboration between the two musicians. Later on in Le Bon’s set, Presley joined in on guitar for “What’s Not Mine,” a cover of Presley’s White Fence tune “Chairs in the Dark,” and “Are You With Me Now?” While Le Bon and Presley were obviously the focus of the evening, it would be criminal not to mention their crack shot backing band featuring JT, Stephen Black, and Daniel Ward. This set showcases mostly songs from the off-kilter Crab Day, two new ones from Rock Pool (“Aside From Growing Old” and “I Just Wanna Be Good”), plus a few older tracks like “No God,” “Greta,” “Sisters,” and the fan-favorite “Are You With Me Now?” The Le Bon/Presley tour soldiers on for a few more dates (here) and if you have the chance I highly recommend you not miss out on this one.

Elisa Ambrogio-Ben Chasny-Tashi Dorji: September 11, 2015 WXDU/WXYC/WKNC Day Show (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

With Three Lobed Recordings on a temporary hiatus from their traditional day show with WXDU on the Friday of Hopscotch Festival, WXDU took matters into their own hands and teamed with fellow college radio stations WXYC (UNC-Chapel Hill) and WKNC (N.C. State) to produce a two-stage day show worth of the tradition. Perhaps the centerpiece of these sets was the trio of Elisa Ambrogio (best known for her work in Magik Markers) and Ben Chasny (aka Six Organs of Admittance), who have been touring together, with the guitar improviser Tashi Dorji. The three of them got down to some serious experimental improv that captured the imagination of the crowd (and had a couple of bewildered college students plugging their ears). The sum of this team was clearly more than its parts, combining noise, free verse, and melodic interludes. By the end of this 20 minute burst of inspiration, our only regret was that it couldn’t be longer.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps MK4V microphones you see in the photo below, together with a soundboard feed by the day’s very capable engineer, Justin. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Dope Body: September 3, 2015 Aviv – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The scruffy and sardonic Baltimore post-punk band Dope Body is supposedly named for “an online video the band enjoyed,” but as you watch the shirtless frontman Andrew Laumann contort his sweat-slicked self all over the stage, you have to wonder if the name isn’t a little bit of a self-referential gag.  In fairness, it felt like 110 degrees inside the cozy Brooklyn DIY venue Aviv on this particular night, so showing off the man’s fitness level might have just been a matter of necessity. On firmer ground, I can tell you that this band brings an instant presence to any stage they inhabit, and the way their music combines the heavy noise with just-enough tuneful accessibility only adds to the need to pay attention. They’re several albums in now, with the latest, Kunk, released this month on Drag City. More new songs, as evidenced by the set, are already in the tank. If the band’s previous record, Lifer, earned some (undeserved) commentary about increased accessibility and even the dreaded “grunge” tag at points, there’s no making any mistake about where any of this material falls live.

The band hits extremely hard, Zachary Utz’s guitars scraping against Laumann’s gritty, snarling vocals, as David Jacober pounds the skins in the thick of John Jones’ basslines. The set jumped around the band’s catalog, but it’s hard to deny the brand-new numbers, one unnamed, as well as “Enemy Outta Me” which has been making the rounds on recent sets. The skronky “Hired Gun” might qualify as the band’s most mainstream-approaching single, and it came through well on this night before the one-two punch of the older “Leather Head” followed by Kunk‘s “Old Grey.” The proceedings ended just shy of forty minutes in. By then, we might not all have been as drenched as the band, but most of us had been reminded what “sweaty” rock n’ roll really means.

Dope Body are on tour right now in Europe, and anyone with the opportunity over there ought to catch them at one of these dates.

Ty Segall: June 24, 2015 Baby’s All Right – Flac/MP3/Streaming

We’ve already posted two of the shows of Ty Segall’s brief four-show NYC acoustic tour from June (Mercury Lounge and Rough Trade). This night at Baby’s All Right was special because it was the first one — Ty remarked that it was indeed his first ever full acoustic show outside of California. This set was close to the vest as Ty played the show fairly straightforward and tight, as opposed to the Rough Trade show later in the week which was a loose and crazy midnight set with a ton of covers. The Baby’s show featured the premiere of several new songs, but it remains to be seen whether those songs will be released as acoustic or full band numbers. Either way, the new songs are strong and meshed well with older material, particularly the tracks from Sleeper, the title track of which we’re streaming below. But this set was not completely devoid of covers, as Ty and guest Cory Hanson played a sweet version of Neil Young’s “For The Turnstiles”, also streaming below. Ty Segall will return to the NYC area in the Fall with his hardcore/metal band Fuzz for a gig at Bowery Ballroom on November 15.

This set was recorded by House FOH Harrison, who provided a superb live mix of the multitrack. There are also cardioid microphones installed near the lighting rig about 15 feet in front of the stage. In post-production, I mixed the two sources and the results are quite excellent. Enjoy!

Ty Segall: June 26, 2015 Mercury Lounge – Flac/MP3/Streaming

We have seen Ty Segall in quite a few different settings, from a tiny DIY club, to two huge punk shows at Webster Hall, to a semi-acoustic night on the Sleeper tour at Bowery Ballroom. All of these various experiences have all added up to the same result — a powerful evening of superb music and a satisfied crowd. When it was announced that Ty would play a series of solo acoustic shows in NYC, we were confident that the nights would be yet another different but equally compelling experience of live Ty Segall. On Friday, he appeared at Mercury Lounge for an early show which would be followed later in the evening with a midnight show at Rough Trade. While the Merc show had fairly early doors, the sold-out show filled up the room quickly when it was still daylight out. This show’s setlist was very different from the one at Baby’s All Right on Wednesday (recording coming soon), and definitely veered towards the more mellow side of this catalog, with Sleeper well-represented. There were also three goofy covers (Devo, Spinal Tap and The Cars), the last of which we are streaming below. The newsworthy part of this set was the fact that Ty played a bunch of new songs on this mini-tour including four on this night. Our initial favorite of the new songs is called “California Hills”, and is a pointed indictment of California suburban life. Ty was joined mid-set by Wand’s Cory Hanson and the two meshed effortlessly, before Ty ended the show solo again. It was a short but sweet set and the performers had a good time themselves, as they messed around a bit with the covers, some cover teases, and one silly mock-up of Ty’s well-known song “Girlfriend” to rank on the guy in the crowd who wouldn’t stop screaming out requests for it. Ty has a few more shows scheduled this Summer out on the West coast, dates here.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cardioids set up on a stand next to the soundboard booth and mixed with an excellent feed provided by house FOH David. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!
