BRONCHO: August 8, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC / MP3 / Streaming

BRONCHO, from Oklahoma, play a kind of nonchalant, grimy garage punk that might be more closely aligned with Bushwick or San Francisco. Theirs is a sound that is easily digested, infinitely catchy, and tailored perfectly to the limited attention spans of well air-conditioned summer crowds. This night at Glasslands gave the band an opportunity to run rapid-fire through another after another of two-minute burners, each with a ready-made hook and a sarcastic wit. Songs like “I Don’t Really Want to be Social”, “Try Me Out Sometime” and “Can’t Get Past the Lips” were among the highlights of this set, which focused on material from the band’s 2011 debut, Can’t Get Past the Lips. This was a high-energy set start to finish, punctuated by the yelps of lead vocalist Ryan Lindsey. Summer’s the perfect season to wrap your ears around some BRONCHO, and they’re swinging through the Midwest and California for the rest of summer, followed by the south in October, so if you’re in the path of their tour, check it out!

I recorded this set with our house rig at Glasslands, a Studio Projects LSD2 large diaphragm microphone and a soundboard feed from Jeremy, the engineer at Glasslands. The result gives you all the high-energy feeling of being there. Enjoy!

Port St. Willow: July 30, 2012 Glasslands – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Port St. Willow is Nick Principe’s solo project and this past year he returned to the East coast from Portland after having grown up in the New York area. He is a childhood friend and early collaborator with Peter Silbermann from The Antlers, and while there are similarities in the music of the two bands, there are also very divergent styles between the two old friends. Last Monday at Glasslands, Port St. Willow opened the secret Glasslands show. Their set was relatively short and consisted of six of the eleven songs from the May 2012 self-release Holiday. The album is a remarkable collection of atmospheric mood pieces, but live with the addition of a drummer the songs take on an immediate feel. At Glasslands, the duo took time to develop each song with a gentle lead-in evolving ultimately into a full-on symphonic crescendo. Port St. Willow is poised to move to the next level — it would hardly be surprising if an established indie label picked up Holiday for wider release. And given the talent for songcraft and live performance, we expect that this band will be a regular on NYCTaper for years to come.

I recorded this show in the same manner as the Antlers set, and the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

[still from official Donora video]

On a summer night in Brooklyn there are few places I’d rather be than Glasslands. With their perfectly refrigerated tap and AC cranked to full blast, it’s always an easy decision to come for a night of great music. So when I saw this great indie-pop lineup with Donora headlining, I was excited.

Back in February, I had the pleasure of seeing Donora play in support of Team Genius and was impressed with the work from their 2011 EP, Boyfriends, Girlfriends. This show at Glasslands was a stop on their Friends Forever tour with fellow Pittsburgh band TeamMate and did not disappoint. Donora’s upbeat set featured many of the songs from the EP plus a brand new track Under the Lights, which made the packed crowd dust off their dancing shoes.

This recording was made with a pair of Schoeps MK5 microphones positioned in our usual spot, along with a soundboard feed. We are really excited about Glasslands’ recently upgraded soundboard, and this was the very first night with the new equipment. House engineer Jeremy absolutely nailed both the live mix and soundboard feed. The recording is an even balance between the two sources and sounds excellent. Enjoy!

Amen Dunes: June 17, 2012 Glasslands and June 24, 2012 Knitting Factory – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

The Sacred Bones Records showcase was the last show I saw at the Northside Festival, and it was also one of the ones I anticipated the most. First, because I try to never miss a chance to see bands I like at Glasslands, and second, because it was a stellar lineup from beginning to end. Of the bands playing, Amen Dunes were one I had not seen before, but they won me over early with their hypnotic, dark sound that recalls Syd Barrett, the Velvet Underground, Suicide and 13th Floor Elevators, among others. Founder and frontman Damon McMahon has claimed that he gets nervous performing live, but you wouldn’t have known it during this confident, if too short, set. Of course, it’s unlikely that McMahon could see us any more clearly than we could see him given the huge clouds of man-made fog he played in. If nothing else, the fog gave the show even more of a narcotic vibe.

This set gave us a taste of some of McMahon’s best songs from his recent record, Through Donkey Jaw. McMahon’s songs, now produced by a three-man band, tend to be downtempo affairs, but they held this crowd rapt, especially on numbers like the opener to Donkey Jaw, “Baba Yaga”.  We were fortunate enough to catch a second, slightly longer Amen Dunes show on the following Sunday at the Knitting Factory when nyctaper saw Amen Dunes opened for another of our favorite bands, the Wooden Shjips (that recording [HERE]). McMahon is one of those artists whose integrity and brilliance you recognize instantly, and we both felt that way when we caught our respective sets.

I recorded the Glasslands set with a soundboard feed and Schoeps MK5 microphones; the Knitting Factory set was similarly recorded with Sennheiser MKH-8040 microphones and a soundboard feed. Both are outstanding, with excellent house mixes. The Glasslands recording favors the soundboard more, while the Knitting Factory recording favors the sound from the Sennheiser microphones.  Enjoy!

Crystal Stilts: June 17, 2012 Glasslands [Northside Festival] – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

As noted in our post back in May about the band, this site has followed Crystal Stilts from early on in their career. In my times seeing the band, I have watched them grow from at-times diffident live performers into a dialed-in act whose performances retain the ramshackle greatness of their earlier shows, but deliver a polish on their instruments and a solidity to their sound that was missing in some of those earlier shows. The band closed out the stellar Northside Festival showcase put on by Sacred Bones Records in real style, keeping Glasslands filled to capacity even though it was well after midnight on a Sunday. This set went everywhere in their catalog, from their latest LP In Love With Oblivion, to their current Radiant Door EP, and all the way back to their 2008 breakout LP Alight of Night.  They also served up a relatively rare track, “Love Is A Wave” from a 2009 7″, as well as a new number that I am calling “Delirium” for now. This set was completely different than the one we saw back in May

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones and a soundboard feed from the Glasslands staff.  Like many of our Crystal Stilts recordings, this one is excellent. Enjoy!

Wymond Miles: June 17, 2012 Glasslands [Northside Festival] – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Fresh & Onlys guitarist Wymond Miles proved his chops as a frontman in his own right at this Glasslands show during the Northside Festival. With this particular show being showcase of some of the most promising acts from Sacred Bones Records, Miles easily put himself in that company with a performance that introduced (or re-introduced) the crowd to his solo material, including his most recent record (and second this year!), Under the Pale Moon.  A downbeat record that tackles some recent tragedies in Miles’ personal life, Miles’ delivery was anything but dour. Although he was technically the night’s resident ambassador of the San Francisco psych-rock scene, Miles’ set carried on the stripped-down immediacy of Under the Pale Moon; a rocker like “Run Like the Hunted” has no space for blissed-out psychedelia. That role was left to the tracks from Miles’ Earth Has Doors EP, “”Hidden Things Are Asking You To Find Them”, “Temples of Magick” and the set’s closer, “Earth Has Doors, Let Them Open”. Miles has obvious gifts as a frontman, both in his command of an audience and his look. With his prolific songwriting ability to go with it, it’s fair to say that Miles is in no danger of being “some dude from that other band” in the eyes of anyone.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones in our usual spot in the venue, plus a soundboard feed.  The results are excellent.  Enjoy!

After catching the Brooklyn psych metal band Naam opening for Monster Magnet at the beginning of the year (recording [HERE]), I couldn’t wait to hear more. We got the chance on a recent Saturday as the band headlined at Glasslands to celebrate the release of their new Ballad of the Starchild EP by playing almost the entire record straight through. Starchild is styled as five-part suite, and adds overt Eastern influences (sitar anyone?) to the band’s bottom-heavy psych rock sound. And by “bottom heavy”, I simply mean that bassist John Preston Bundy need not fear being an underappreciated member of this band.

Starchild is beautifully mixed in an overtly classic rock style that suits the band’s sound- and I’m pleased to report that Naam’s live sound once again possessed all of the power and poise of their recorded output. It’s no accident that this is a band that has “crossover appeal” between metalheads and psych rock fans alike; they strike a balance between musical exploration and raw power that almost anyone can appreciate. Foregoing the last track of Starchild in evident frustration at an early closing time for the venue, the band instead rewarded us with the sprawling “Kingdom”, their longest number and one of their best. Although this was a shorter set than we (and they) would have liked, it was still a great introduction to this EP.

hi and lo recorded this set with the NYCTaper-installed “house rig”, a Studio Projects LSD2 large-diaphragm stereo mic, plus a well-balanced soundboard feed. There is some DI-related distortion in the first song, but once that clears up, this set is flawless in sound. Enjoy!

Alcoholic Faith Mission: April 27, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

May 7, 2012
By

The Danish band Alcoholic Faith Mission, like many of their Scandinavian peers, seems so full of ineffable friendliness and gratitude that they almost force you to be an instant fan. Equal parts whimsical Scandinavian indiepop and college rock earnestness, their sound benefits from their time spent both in their home country and in Brooklyn. Brooklyn has been an integral part of AFM from the beginning; it (and alcohol) not only inspired their band name, but it also was where they recorded their second record, 421 Wythe Avenue, using only the materials that could be found in that old factory space. They are now two more records in, with their latest, Ask Me This, seeing release this week. In part due to that aforementioned friendliness and familiarity, this Friday night show at Glasslands had the vibe of coming over to hear your friends debut their new record just for you.

Band co-founder Thorben Seiero Jensen (who founded the band along with Sune Solund) and Kristine Permild share vocal duties, and they respectively represent the yin and yang of the band’s sound. Jensen sings in the full-throated style often associated with American rock singers, and he voices the band’s frequently-dark and even brutal lyrics with a wounded-bird affect that gives them credibility. Permild’s voice is sweeter, lighter and (of course) feminine, and is the pixie dust that gives the band a tenderer core. If you pay close attention to Jensen’s lyrics, there is a strain of darkness and depravity you might not expect from a band with such a pleasant onstage demeanor. But it’s hard to miss that there is some heavy shit going on behind that exterior; songs about sexual malfeasance, addiction and pain abound.

In the live setting, with the band cheerily inviting us to share a beer post-show, it was easier to focus on the simpler and more immediate pleasures of their sound itself. The rocker “Alaska,” with its klaxon-like lead melody, kicked things off and was an instant highlight, with Jensen and Permild bearing equal weight on the vocals. I was also partial to “Into Pieces” which is on Ask Me This but first saw release on the Running With Insanity EP earlier this year. “Sobriety Up and Left” and “Nut In Your Eye” were older songs that I also took a newfound liking to in the live setting.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK22 open cardioid microphones and a nicely-balanced soundboard feed from Josh at Glasslands.  Despite it being a bit of a chatty Friday night crowd, I am very pleased with the results. Enjoy!

Lower Dens: May 2, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Before coming out for an almost-unheard-of-at-Glasslands three-song encore, frontwoman Jana Hunter of Lower Dens stepped out from behind the keys and mic stand to stand in front of the monitors, among the crowd, and close the main set with the Houston musician Arthur Bates’ “Hours”. And why the hell not? Though known for being a bit reserved onstage, Hunter has watched her Baltimore-based band be anointed an “It” band in the city that decides such things. She certainly has nothing to be self-conscious about, if she ever did.

Not that this extremely sold-out show, or the spate of overwhelmingly positive recent reviews, are the first time anyone noticed the band. Their first record, Twin-Hand Movement, had a lot to recommend it, and critics agreed. But Nootropics, which dropped this week, is the kind of record that takes the band’s sound and appeal to the proverbial “next level”. Rather than an excellent followup to a good start, Nootropics accomplishes the feat that bedevils many second records – evolving the band’s sound and broadening its sonic palette while retaining the core of what drew notice in the first place.

As to that palette, those of us who came of age in the eras of Luna or Galaxie 500 wouldn’t have had trouble finding the Dean Wareham influences all over the band’s early sound, with the fuzzed-out guitars forming the sea that bore along gentle but compelling melodies. The band’s first offerings from Nootropics, “Brains” and “Propagation”, continue that tradition, but also make it clear that there is more going on this time around, with Eno and Kraftwerk influences bubbling to the fore. Stripped of the album’s gauzy texture and replacing it with the raw immediacy (and minimal processing) of the intimate Glasslands stage, Lower Dens made the case for being able to carry well-produced album material in the live setting. It never hurts to have a sellout crowd, of course, and there were so many people crowding the stage there were practically people on top of the band. I won’t be surprised to find the same state of affairs at Bowery Ballroom in a couple months when they end their current tour.

Not only was this set long by Glasslands standards (71 minutes is practically a Springsteen concert in a venue where most sets clock in well under an hour), but the encore included a special cover of the Houston psych-rock pioneers Red Krayola’s “A Portait of V.I. Lenin in the Style of Jackson Pollock” – proving that the Texas-born Hunter, like any good musician, also has a great record collection.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones and a soundboard feed provided by Glasslands and the band’s FOH. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Noveller: April 19, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

I have been a fan of the multi-talented guitarist and filmmaker Sarah Lipstate, aka Noveller, since seeing her open a slam-packed Bear In Heaven show at Glasslands back in 2010. Shortly thereafter, she released the EP Desert Fires, which at the time was the high watermark of her finely textured guitar compositions, especially the song “Three Windows Facing Three Doors”. Being a filmmaker, Lipstate’s songs have an abstract, cinematic quality to them; Lipstate carries you with her on her carefully constructed waves of sound. Although she was formerly with the bands Parts & Labor and Cold Cave, Lipstate is one of the few musicians who I would venture has more true potential on her own; her compositions feel complete without the trappings of a full band.

With her new eight-song LP Glacial Glow, Lipstate has 0nce again delivered compositions of layered, subtle beauty. She played two of those compositions – “Ends” and “Entering”, the bookends to Glacial Glow, on this night. Two new songs, “Cyanne” and “Darkheart”, joined “Starve” from her split LP with unFact (David Wm. Sims of the Jesus Lizard), to round out the set. Lipstate’s work continues to be absolutely mesmerizing – I can’t wait to hear what she comes up with next.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Lotus Plaza and Disappears sets, and the sound is outstanding.  Enjoy!
