Brooklyn’s Landlady is a really good live band, and they’re good in a way that flatters their musical skill as well as drawing a crowd. Where most music has to make a choice between being interesting or mass-appealing, they seem able to do both, to hang in a narrow band that includes acts like Vampire Weekend, TV On the Radio, and The Dirty Projectors. That I pulled those references from the prior decade isn’t unintentional; Landlady feels like the pleasing synthesis of a few different strands of late-aughts rock, created and executed by Adam Schatz and his bandmates since 2010. Schatz has called Landlady’s songs his “big songs”, and the veteran brings a certain big-tent gusto to the songs that makes them distinct from other projects in which he has been involved, like Man Man or Father Figures. It’s as if Schatz — a multi-instrumentalist himself, including saxophone — distilled some of his other project’s textural complexity and general weirdness into something still-complex but more ready and willing to be liked.

That was all in evidence on the final day of the Hopscotch Music Festival, as Raleigh’s Pour House packed in for the Hometapes / Trekky Records day show. Landlady were representing the former, an outfit recently moved to Durham, North Carolina, and made their label proud. It’d be easy not to care about a day show crowd on a festival’s last day, just near the end of a month-long tour. The band had played Hopscotch Thursday, traveled to Richmond, VA on Friday, then back to Raleigh on Saturday because, as Schatz put it, “we like you”. The band treated us like a special crowd, too, giving us a brisk but powerful set that awakened even the most jaded and hungover festivalgoers. Landlady’s music has an at-times tribal quality to it, abetted in part by the use of two drummers, and that gives the music a festive air. Songs rarely stand still, shifting textures and ideas more often in the space of a single number than many bands achieve in entire albums. True to Schatz’s reputation as a showman, the band saved probably the two biggest standout tracks — “Maria” and “Above My Ground” for the end, though “The Globe” would come in a close third. That final number “Above My Ground” gave Schatz a chance to give a mini-speech mid-song in which he ruminated on the impermanence of things before exhorting the audience to sing the song’s one-word refrain — “always”. As Schatz said, the song is about having lost something, and you got the sense that Landlady would genuinely miss us. They are, after all, a band that stands out the most when they have a packed crowd to watch.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 microphones and a soundboard feed from the Pour House engineer Jack. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Continuing with our theme of one-off collaborations from the Hopscotch Music Festival, our final day show of the festival went down at Raleigh’s Pour House, where local Trekky Records teamed up with Hometapes (a recent transplant to Durham, NC) and one of the more unique performances came from a local-plus-out-of-town duo. Phil Cook and brother Brad, of Megafaun, have become mainstays of the scene around town, with their hands in all kinds of different aspects of the Triangle music world (including Phil’s current tour with Hiss Golden Messenger).  Caitlin Rose, of Nashville, is one of those nominally country singers whose work crosses over to the rock world. Fitting, then, that the two teamed up for a combination of Rose originals, old-time classics, and covers, along with some off-the-cuff and often-hilarious banter. The show gave off the feeling of a rowdy show in somebody’s dark living room on a sunny day, as the mingling crowd of people who seemed to all know each other socialized as the artists did their thing. The musicians’ vibe matched their crowd, with Caitlin and Phil keeping things loose and chatting with us as neighbors. If at times the clinking of glasses and the conversation got a little louder than it should, it didn’t rattle the musicians much, who rewarded us with a fun song selection as well as some impromptu contests and trivia. When Cook played Dylan’s “Only A Hobo”, it was hard not to imagine the song being played to the man’s original crowds, in Greenwich Village clubs as much a part of local social life as revered for the music going down. In its offhandedness, its at-times raggedness, its collaboration among old friends, this felt like the right kind of Saturday set.

As you may have guessed, the crowd was a little noisy during this one. I compensated for that by focusing heavily on a soundboard feed and mixing in just a little of my Schoeps MK41 microphones. So, despite the crowd, the recording is excellent, if you don’t mind hearing some bursts of chatter here and there. Enjoy!

Megafaun: May 2, 2014 Baby’s All Right – Flac/MP3/Streaming

This was one of those nights. Megafaun aren’t exactly breaking up, but because each member of the trio has an abundant amount of other projects pulling them in all directions, this show at Baby’s All Right had the feeling that it might be the band’s last in NYC, if not forever then for a very long time. The local musical who’s-who seemed to sense the historic nature of the occasion — either that or Megafaun has a lot of important friends. In the crowd was the author Jesse Jarnow, the writer Richard Gehr, Northern Spy Records founder Adam Downey, Sharon Van Etten and every member of her band. But the most notable celeb in attendance was on stage — former bandmate and recent Grammy winner Justin Vernon joined Megafaun for this seemingly final mini-tour. The band’s set was a bit ragged-but-right, as generally speaking most Megafaun sets we’ve seen have been. This is a band known almost as much for its pure spirit as its songwriting and performing. The setlist included pretty much all of the old favorites you’d want to hear, and one excellent cover that we’re streaming below. There will be plenty of opportunities to see the individual members of Megafaun with their various projects — Brad Cook is in Sharon’s current touring band — but this might have been the last proper Megafaun show. As as a send-off, though, it was a pretty sweet show.

This set was recorded by Baby’s FOH Devin Foley with the venue’s installed multitrack system. All I did was mix it down. There was one wrinkle though, as the encore song was played off mic in the middle of the floor. For that song, I only used the two mounted room mics. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Matthew E. White: September 6, 2012 Hopscotch Festival, Fletcher Opera Theater (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming (plus bonus Mercury Lounge track!)

Matthew E. White has been one of the true musical sensations of 2012 so far. The Richmond, VA native has not only garnered praise from all quarters for his debut album Big Inner, a gumbo of 70s soul, rock, jazz, blues and roots influences (oh, and Randy Newman), but his live shows have already achieved cult status. Big Inner, released this year on the Hometapes imprint, is a lush, everything-but-the-kitchen-sink production that pairs White with a choir, strings, keyboards, baritone sax, and more, and White has proven equally willing to go for the big arrangements in the live setting, convenience and good sense be damned.

It is appropriate, then, that as one of the top artists to emerge from the southeastern U.S. this year, White garnered a prime slot at what I would argue has already risen to be the king of southeastern music festivals, the Hopscotch Music Festival. For this very special performance in Raleigh’s Fletcher Opera Theater, White showed up with a 30-person ensemble including many of the very musical ingredients that make Big Inner so special. From the mellow Otis Redding-style groove of “One of These Days” to the psychedelic jams on “Hot Toddies”, this over one hour show (longer than Big Inner‘s 40 minutes by a solid amount) was as varied and remarkable as Big Inner itself. Before wrapping up, White took special time to thank festival co-founder Grayson Currin, who booked this mammoth ensemble long before White became the toast of the blogosphere. As with so many things about this festival, this night with Matthew E. White was something Hopscotch got right.

This recording, by NC taper Larry Tucker, is a matrix mix of a soundboard feed and American-made Peluso microphones. While it suffers from some of the same room acoustics issues as the Lambchop recording, it is quite good. As a bonus, Hometapes and White’s management have also permitted us to release our recording of “Brazos” that nyctaper recorded at Mercury Lounge.

The Caribbean: June 5, 2011 Mercury Lounge – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

No, there is nothing tropical about The Caribbean. Hailing from Washington, D.C. (not exactly Antigua, by any stretch), this experimental pop trio has been putting out their challenging brand of music since 1999, after the DC bands Townies and one of my personal favorites, Smart Went Crazy, imploded. Their latest record, Discontinued Perfume, continues the band’s tradition of marrying traditional softcore indie rock songwriting to jazz and ambient textures. If you want fist-pumping, major-chord-driven rock, keep moving – The Caribbean aren’t interested in delivering the big hooks and immediate melodies that drive today’s car-commercials-first mainstream. Theirs is a style that rewards repeat listens and a little deep thinking. Lucky then, that we caught them on a very subdued Sunday night at the Mercury Lounge, where we had a chance to fully appreciate the band’s set without distraction. The material from Discontinued Perfume was the focus, and it deservedly stood out, including the closer (and one of the catchier songs on the record), “The Clock Tower.”

hi and lo and I recorded this set from our usual location in the venue with Schoeps supercardiod microphones running into an ultraquiet preamp. This is an excellent capture, especially thanks to the use of the high end preamp and the respectful crowd. Enjoy!

Inexplicably, prior to their three straight nights opening for the Mountain Goats, I had not seen Megafaun live. I had seen Brad Cook on stage with Bon Iver and with Sharon Van Etten, but the true Megafaun experience had eluded me. These three shows confirmed what I had been told — this band is a heck of a lot of fun on stage. Their albums are enjoyably rich americana, but live the band takes on the gregarious personalities of the three members. The banter is hilarious, the songs compel audience participation and ad lib/improv bits add color the material. The final of the three nights was the band’s tightest and most enjoyable performance, but really we could have posted any or all three of their opening sets. Catch Megafaun again in NYC next week, Saturday April 16 at Music Hall of Williamsburg, opening for Sharon Van Etten.

I recorded this set with the Neumann’s pointed at the stacks from the balcony rail and mixed with an excellent soundboard feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!
