My first show of 2014 was a very memorable one. The Czech band Dva have been around for a while and have been to NYC before, in fact they have a live album recorded for WMFU last year. But none of their albums have ever been distributed in the US — that is until Northern Spy Records will release Nipomo on February 25, 2014. And I had not seen them live until this past Thursday at Trans Pecos, at an outstanding show curated by Northern Spy. “Dva” is Czech for “duo”, and that is the basic formula for this band — but that’s just the start. Bára Kratochvílová plays a litany of instruments, including sax, a variety of percussion instruments and banjo. She also provides most of the vocals and the vocal sampling. Jan Kratochvíl is seated on stage with his acoustic guitar, a sampler, a mixer and his ability to perfectly beatbox. The sound of the band can best be described as “acoustic electronica” but the performance was so much more than that. In other words, Dva have to be seen to be completely understood. We will get that chance again in March, as the band has announced that they will return to the US for a tour which will include stops at SXSW and NYC.
I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards on a stand at the front of the stage and mixed with a soundboard feed provided by the venue’s excellent FOH Max. The sound is pro quality. Enjoy!
