We have been big fans of She Keeps Bees here at NYCTaper for a few years. The duo have appeared on the site a good half-dozen times and we have not been shy with superlatives. The combination of Andy’s precise but aggressive percussion and Jess’s bluesy guitar is the perfect compliment for that voice — Jess’s innate ability to draw out complex and wide range of emotions in each and every song. At Glasslands last week, the band drew an impressive crowd for the dead week pre-Labor Day. The fans were also quite rambunctious as you can hear on this recording. We were encouraged to hear that She Keeps Bees is finishing up recording a new album, and several of those new songs were featured during the set. The band is seeking the right label to distribute the album, and we hope to see it released this Fall. We are streaming “Counter Charm”, which was the band’s 2012 single release.

I recorded this set with our installed rig in this venue and the sound is quite excellent. Enjoy!

She Keeps Bees: December 15, 2012 Cameo Gallery – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Last month at Sharon Van Etten’s secret show at Cameo Gallery, we weren’t entirely certain until well into the evening as to whether Sharon would actually play. But we were ok with that, since the bill included our old friends She Keeps Bees. We hadn’t seen Jess and Andy in quite a while, likely in over a year. They spend a lot of time recording and playing in Europe, since, well, our brethren overseas have caught on to the magic of She Keeps Bees better than the audiences and industry folk over here. Their 2011 release Dig On was one of Rough Trade’s albums of the year, but it hardly made a blip in America. In the US, its not to say that when a crowd is at an SKB show, they don’t have a great time. Its just that the crowds aren’t big enough and the industry buzz isn’t loud enough given the immense talent and likeability of this duo. Eventually, it will happen. And perhaps the friendship of performers like Sharon Van Etten will help — it certainly can’t hurt. At Cameo last month, She Keeps Bees played a forty minute set in a style to which we’ve become accustomed — a nice mix of material old and new, plenty of hilarious banter, and some outstanding individual performances. We’re streaming the finale of “Ribbon” because it encapsulates much of what’s great about this band, talent, energy and lots of soul.

I recorded this set in the same manner as Sharon’s set, and the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

She Keeps Bees: April 16, 2011 Music Hall of Williamsburg – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

We have seen She Keeps Bees five times in the last year, and they have never failed to deliver the goods. Of the 12 bands at our 2010 CMJ show, they were perhaps the best received of all the excellent acts. She Keeps Bees opening set at Music Hall of Williamsburg on Thursday last was no exception. Due to the sound mix up in the balcony, Jessica’s vocals were not as prominent as usual, but this gave us the opportunity to focus on Andy’s precise percussion work. As the entirety of the “rhythm section”, the drums in this duo are crucial — to keep the time but also to fill the gaps between Jessica’s vocal flourishes. As She Keeps Bees continues to impress and develop a much-deserved reputation for excellent performances, the duo anticipate a productive 2011. Dig On will be released in the Summer, and much touring will follow. We’ll tweet the dates when we have them.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Sharon Van Etten set, and the sound quality is clear, but we would have preferred a greater vocal presence in the house mix. Enjoy!
