Nathan Bowles: March 26, 2016 Three Lobed Sweet Sixteen Spectacular, King’s (Raleigh, NC)

Nathan Bowles has made in appearance in all kinds of bands connected to Three Lobed Recordings in one way or another, from Pelt to the Black Twig Pickers to Hiss Golden Messenger to Steve Gunn‘s band to his own fine work. And that’s not even solely as a banjo player, either; Bowles is an accomplished drummer, as his work with Gunn in particular has shown. As essential as he has been to the greater Three Lobed family, it was of course an honor to have him for the label’s sixteenth birthday party.

Originally slated to be a bit of a reprise of his 2014 duo performance with Daniel Bachman here at King’s in Raleigh, NC, this set ended up being a special kind of Bowles solo show, as he tried out some new material slated to appear on his forthcoming album on Paradise of Bachelors. The thirteen-minute “I Miss My Dog,” which Bowles recently performed at Pickathon, is as powerful a statement as he has made musically, and furthers the notion that his command of this instrument is not about some kind of “revival” but rather a true evolution. You have only to listen to the short and sweet “Burnt Ends Rag” that came after it to understand what a talent Bowles is, and why we’ll be so fortunate to see him in so many different settings in the years to come.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other recordings of the day, with a soundboard feed from engineer Justin Perrachon and a combination of onstage and audience mics. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Sunburned Hand of the Man: March 26, 2016 Three Lobed Sweet Sixteen Spectacular, King’s (Raleigh, NC)

This was our second North Carolina journey with Sunburned Hand of the Man, having witnessed the awesome spectacle that was their 2014 Three Lobed Recordings / WXDU day show at Hopscotch. Like the recent show in New York City that we caught at Union Pool, this night at the Three Lobed Recordings Sweet Sixteen Spectacular found the out/noise collective taking more of a song-based approach. Which isn’t to say, in any way, that this was somehow a “traditional” performance; like anything Sunburned and many things Three Lobed, this performance celebrated the experimental and the expeditionary, with those American flags in the backdrop an ironic comment on the freak flags that these artists so willfully fly. Once again, we got to witness a furious version of “The Jaybird,” but other than that and “Double Purity,” this was an entirely different performance than at Union Pool. It meant something for a band of Sunburned’s underground stature to be here alongside such a diverse array of Three Lobed veterans, from Nathan Bowles’ forward-looking Appalachian banjo performance to Steve Gunn’s solo guitar set to Mary Lattimore and Elysse Thebner’s ambient harp and keyboard set. Among all that great music, perhaps nobody more than Sunburned (and OK, Bardo Pond) stood for all the heads in the audience, the unique gathering of the like-minded that this label has brought together. Once again, it was a divine thing.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other performances of the day, with 8 channels of combined soundboard feed from engineer Brad Womack, onstage microphones, and audience microphones. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Though his solo career has been the (very successful) focus of late, many of us were first exposed to the virtuosic guitar playing of Steve Gunn via his perfect pairing with the drummer John Truscinski. The duo produced a pair of outstanding albums on Three Lobed RecordingsSand City and the masterstroke Ocean Parkway, each with an indelible connection to desert blues, Indian ragas, American folk, and psychedelia. By our count, though, their last live shows doing this music were in 2012, including the Hopscotch Music Festival and 285 Kent shows that appeared on this site.

That made it especially exciting to experience the group’s return to a stage where we’ve seen them before — at King’s in Raleigh, NC. This time, we were celebrating the sixteenth anniversary of Three Lobed Recordings, and in a sense, the reissue of both of the duo’s albums by the label this year. Building on Gunn’s dynamic afternoon solo set, the pair gifted us three songs filled with precise interplay and hypnotic guitar work. Gunn dug deep on the guitar work during “Ocean Parkway” and “Banh Mi Ringtones,” the latter’s signature melody leading the pair into an explosive, noisy jam that iced the cake for those of us who love seeing these two play together about equally to our love for Gunn’s solo outings. After “Banh Mi” wound back to its subtler beginnings, the pair closed with “Wythe Raag” from Sand City, which managed to evoke both the namesake Brooklyn street and legendary musical style for which it’s named. That number likewise came in the three parts, building to another sprawling noise climax before its mystical, melodic closing. As Gunn prepares to tour his new record, we hope these two will find time to continue to work together — it’s something not to be missed.

I recorded this set as with the other sets from the day, with a combination of multiple soundboard channels from engineer Brad  Womack’s feed, together with onstage Schoeps MK22 mics and mounted MBHO mics in the center of the room. The sound quality is simply phenomenal. Enjoy!

Sixteen years ago, longtime rabid music fan and newly minted law student Cory Rayborn came up with an audacious, maybe even ridiculous idea: He would press a ten-inch containing some unreleased Bardo Pond material and sell it for money. Anyone who knows much about the economics of record labels, or the vagaries of vinyl production — especially in the vinyl-challenged year 2000 — knows that usually translates to “lose a bunch of money and piss off a bunch of customers in the process.” But a funny thing ended up happening: First there was that Bardo record, Slab, of which the 500-LP run would go on to sell out. Not but another couple releases in came Purposeful Availment, an 8-CD series that also featured Bardo Pond.  Then there was TLR-012, an LP of Bardo Pond playing with Tom Carter, followed in short order by the Cypher Documents CD. Then another CD series, Modern Containment, found Bardo back on Three Lobed, with their Adrop CD. There are more than ten others since, right up to 2014’s Shone Like A Ton and Refulgo releases and their contribution to the Parallelogram series last year. Out of Three Lobed Recordings‘ 117 total current releases, the Philadelphia-based band makes up not only the largest percentage of the label’s releases, but they’re the label’s original reason for being.

Since that first 10″, Three Lobed has grown, but its original mission hasn’t changed. The label has kept things willfully weird, releasing everything from Bardo Pond’s feedback-soaked psychedelia to the drone/free jazz sounds of Glacial (Lee Ranaldo, David Watson and Tony Buck), to the Parallelogram contribution from Alan Bishop, Bill Orcutt and Chris Corsano, capped with its brain-damaged cover of Cream’s “Politican,” to the delicate guitar work of Danny Paul Grody, to his work with Hiss Golden Messenger and Steve Gunn. Both the Three Lobed name and its iconic logo suggest not just an expanded but an integrated, functioning mind, and at the root of all those seemingly disparate releases has been Rayborn’s, a font of curatorial taste. In his mind, all of these radically different sounds belong together, and in his presentation of them, he connects the dots.

So it meant a great deal, to Rayborn personally and to the followers of the Three Lobed experience, for Bardo Pond’s evening set to close out the marathon of music that was the “Sweet Sixteen Spectacular,” and for them to do with a sprawling, career-spanning set that represented their first return to North Carolina in thirteen years. “Kali Yuga Blues” began the night, with Isobel Sollenberger’s moan floating above the guitar haze. After another Peace on Venus number the setlist went twenty years back to 1996’s Amanita for “Be A Fish” before hurling into what may have been the first live performance of their Parallelogram contribution, “Screens for a Catch (Fur Bearing Eyes)”. Along with four new songs, the band threw in one of the very oldest — “Absence” from Bufo Alvarius — followed by another older number, “Straw Dog,” from Lapsed. Drug references by the band are as prolific as its catalog, and by this point in the evening, even the sober among this crowd had probably lost their sense of time. The set’s, and the night’s, spiritual peak came during the new song “Moment to Moment,” a twelve-minute deep dive into the band’s vision, with each of us led through the deep bed of guitar by Sollenberger’s flute, her voice howling ahead into the void.

There was no encore, but one wasn’t needed after the last song, “Tommy Gun Angel,” whose lyrics about rejoining the primordial ooze, melting away like the snow, gave a long-eyed perspective to the proceedings. Every little contribution makes up part of a larger one, a few more positive ions added to the charge of existence. You never know where a dorm room dream like putting out a ten inch record for one of your favorite bands might take you. It might end up something just for you and the smallest group of friends. Or it might be something great.

I recorded this set with four soundboard channels from King’s engineer Brad Womack, together with Schoeps MK22 microphones onstage and MBHO microphones hung from the ceiling in the middle of the room. Save for a one-second glitch during the first song, the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Eugene Chadbourne-Steve Gunn-Mary Lattimore: September 11, 2015 WXDU/WXYC/WKNC Day Show, King’s (Raleigh, NC)

For their final act of their day show at King’s, Triangle college radio stations WXDU, WKNC and WXYC outdid themselves with a three-way-combo of stringed instrument experts. Legendary improvisational guitarist and banjo player Eugene Chadbourne, whose long list of collaborators runs the gamut from Camper Van Beethoven to John Zorn, was joined by New Yorker and longtime site favorite Steve Gunn and the renowned experimental harpist Mary Lattimore. Having never played together before, the three worked out their collaborative style in real time, which was a fascinating process to watch, and even more of one to hear. It was fascinating to watch Lattimore turn an instrument known for its delicacy into an aggressive, atonal element, with her slapping at its sides for percussive effect. Gunn and Chadbourne likewise built off of each other, with Chadbourne providing emphatic bursts of noise at points on the banjo. The piece flowed from delicate and restrained to harsh and intense minute-to-minute, holding your attention as you wondered where the trio would end up next, and reveling in the fact that they might not be quite sure, either. Chadbourne even added some vocals at the end, with lines referencing the traditional song “I Wish I Was A Mole In the Ground.” It’s safe to say that nothing else about this unique meeting was “traditional.”

I recorded this set in the same manner as the day’s other recordings, with a soundboard feed from King’s engineer Justin together with Schoeps MK4V microphones onstage. There is a bit of DI hiss on the quiet passages, but overall the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

By Day 3 of Hopscotch, it can be tough to get out and moving after two full days of non-stop rockin’ and partying. Luckily, the past few years, the Orange County Social Club day party at Kings has offered a good kick start to the festival’s final day. This year might have been their finest party yet, where local, younger punks Natural Causes and Flesh Wounds set the stage for a great set from their forefathers, Pipe. Plenty of bands from the Triangle scene of the 1990’s gained more traction outside the region, but locally, Pipe was one of the most beloved bands around. After disbanding in the late ’90’s, the band was basically gone for 10 years, outside of a one-off show with the original line-up in 2004. Luckily for us, after playing the Merge XX festival in 2009, the band has remained active, playing shows in fits, writing new songs, and continuing to show everyone how fun punk rock should be. Recording for a new Pipe album began in earnest last year, and if we’re lucky, someday it will be available for purchase. Until then, this set, with a mix of 20+ year old classics and unreleased new songs, will have to suffice. Crank it up and imagine the cups and cans flying though the air, just try not to get beer on the cymbals.

This set was recorded by Eric PH with the mics clamped to a ledge behind the soundboard, combined with a feed from Kings FOH Justin. The results are outstanding.

Flesh Wounds: September 12, 2015 Orange County Social Club Day Show (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

For the second year running, one of my favorite Hopscotch shows has been the Orange County Social Club day show at Kings. And just like last year’s lineup, local Carrboro punk band Flesh Wounds is one of the show’s main draws. With one self-titled LP, a couple tapes, and a 7″ out on Merge, the band is one of North Carolina’s best kept secrets. But Flesh Wounds’ cover has surely been blown, as they toured both as opening act and backing band on Mac McCaughan’s recent solo tour (which we caught back in May at Baby’s All Right). Any proof you need that this band’s vitality extends beyond their home state is right here on this recording. In a breathless twenty minutes in which they barely pause between songs, the band plays from the recent In the Mouth EP on Snot Releases, “Kennel Cough” from their Merge single, and a few new ones. This is one of the bands that will keep me coming back to North Carolina, but I’m hoping I don’t have to wait an entire year to see them again at Hopscotch.

With Three Lobed Recordings on a temporary hiatus from their traditional day show with WXDU on the Friday of Hopscotch Festival, WXDU took matters into their own hands and teamed with fellow college radio stations WXYC (UNC-Chapel Hill) and WKNC (N.C. State) to produce a two-stage day show worth of the tradition. Perhaps the centerpiece of these sets was the trio of Elisa Ambrogio (best known for her work in Magik Markers) and Ben Chasny (aka Six Organs of Admittance), who have been touring together, with the guitar improviser Tashi Dorji. The three of them got down to some serious experimental improv that captured the imagination of the crowd (and had a couple of bewildered college students plugging their ears). The sum of this team was clearly more than its parts, combining noise, free verse, and melodic interludes. By the end of this 20 minute burst of inspiration, our only regret was that it couldn’t be longer.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps MK4V microphones you see in the photo below, together with a soundboard feed by the day’s very capable engineer, Justin. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

If you’re not a denizen of noise/experimental circles you might not be aware of the legendary Sunburned Hand of the Man, the Massachusetts band who since 1994 have produced several fine albums and over 100 releases (mainly self-released CD-Rs and cassettes) in what it might be fair to call “random” fashion. The band has included any number of players over the years, but is anchored by John Moloney, who joined us at last year’s Three Lobed / WXDU Day Show during Hopscotch Music Festival for a collaboration with Thurston Moore (which is slated as an official release … keep your eyes peeled). This was the collective’s 20th anniversary as an entity, and it seemed like the right move for King’s, and a show sponsored by two organizations that respect experimental music, to be their showcase.

Eleven years after being featured on the cover of “The Wire” and touted as being leaders of the “New Weird America” genre, the band had been somewhat dormant in recent years, as releases slowed and band members focused on other projects.  In June, the band departed on their first U.S. tour in several years, a brief jaunt down the east coast as a 7  piece band, including newer, younger band members alongside seasoned vets.  On that trip, plans were solidified to take part in this years’ Three Lobed day show during Hopscotch.  Sunburned’s membership is always in flux; on tour, it has often been whoever was available to get in the van when the time came to hit the road.  For the brief September tour built around this Day Show performance, they were a tight, 5 piece unit and included Chad Cooper, who co-founded the band with John Moloney, but had not toured with the band in the United States since 1999.  Longtime guitarist, Paul Labrecque was along for the ride as well, giving us a look at a version of the band not seen in the U.S. in quite some time.  Talking to the band before their set, there was a palpable excitement from the players about the music they had been making each night of their tour, and what was to come during this afternoon set.

Like the band’s recorded work, this single piece, entitled “Blues For Richard”, was deeply outre, a melange of organic, found and electronic sounds that brooded and whistled. At its beginning, the piece felt unsettling, like a late-afternoon hike into an unfamiliar wood. Band members began the set on the floor, turning knobs that would anchor the piece’s future movements. What there were of lyrics came just over twelve minutes in, in the form of chants and spoken/read lyrics, supplied by Greta Svalberg.  As the guitars turned up and the drums kicked in, the atmospheric sounds turned to a slow burn, psychedelic groove, pushed and pulled by Moloney’s expressive drumming and Adam Langellotti’s elastic bass.  Labrecque’s guitar work becomes more and more frantic, while Cooper’s homemade electronics continue to ramp up the intensity.  The band threatens to collapse upon itself a couple of times, coming out on the other side heavier and insurgent each time, before finishing in a blazing, explosive three minute stomp that melted a few faces.  In short, this half hour set is an excellent summation of everything that makes this band great, unpredictable, and worthy of exploring their vast catalog of recorded music.

I recorded this set in the same manner as all of the recordings from this showcase, with Schoeps MK4V microphones onstage and a soundboard feed. The sound quality is phenomenal on this one, maybe the best of the entire day show (which is saying a lot). Enjoy!

As I said in our last post about the co-sponsored Three Lobed / WXDU Day Show during Hopscotch Music Festival, one of the things that made this best-curated-of-the-fest day so special were the number of one-off collaborations that went down. Nathan Bowles has been all around the scene for a while now, lending his banjo and other skills to such diverse acts as the drone wizards Pelt, the Appalachian-influenced Black Twig Pickers, Steve Gunn, plus his solo work. Daniel Bachman, who has been on the site twice, is as prolific as he is talented. His latest release, Orange Co. Serenade appeared on the tiny North Carolina imprint Bathetic Records around the same time that the Virginian chose to relocate to Durham, NC.

For this very special first-time collaboration, Bachman and Bowles (joined by local guitarist Zeke Graves) chose to pay tribute to classic southern sounds, first serving up an acoustic version of Jeffrey Cain’s “Moonshine Is the Sunshine” from his 1970 album For You, followed by the legendary North Carolina guitarist Link Wray’s “Waterboy”, which turned into a massive sixteen-minute guitar freakout with Graves and Bachman’s dueling electric guitars backed by Bowles doing a turn on percussion. From the day’s first act, we ended up hearing one of the highlights of the entire show.

I recorded this set, as with all of these sets, with Schoeps MK4V microphones on stage and a soundboard feed from the King’s staff. The sound quality, particularly on the Link Wray song, is outstanding. Enjoy!
