Acid Mothers Temple: April 5, 2016 Mercury Lounge

Acid Mothers Temple

The cost of touring being what it is, there aren’t many Japanese bands that make it to the U.S. as frequently as Acid Mothers Temple. Their yearly tour has become ritual, for the band and its audience. NYCTaper has been capturing the band’s New York appearances for the past few years—always a stop on the Lower East Side at Mercury Lounge, and one in Williamsburg at the Knitting Factory. I’m delighted that this year I got to do my part and record the Mercury Lounge show. The “Wake to a New Dawn of Another Astro Era Tour 2016” wraps up next week in Los Angeles, having begun last month in Mexico City. Through the month-long visit, setlists have been fairly consistent and their Mercury Lounge set features most of the songs they’ve been playing, including “La Novia,” “The Wizard,” “Another Nanique Dimension,” “Cometary Orbital Drive,” and of course it wouldn’t be an Acid Mothers Temple show without their signature “Pink Lady Lemonade.” If you’re familiar with Acid Mothers Temple, you know the deal and no further introduction is needed. If this is your initial foray into the Acid Mothers cosmos, welcome aboard.

I recorded this set from our usual location in the venue combined with a board feed from Mercury FOH, Alex. The sound is excellent. Enjoy, and stay tuned for the Knitting Factory set, which we’ll be posting soon.

The Wake to a New Dawn of Another Astro Era Tour 2016 continues! Check here for the remaining Texas and California dates.

Soldiers of Fortune: January 7, 2016 Bowery Ballroom

Soldiers of Fortune have marketed themselves at various points as an “anti-band” — one that never writes music, practices, or records. Of course, given the cast of players (Brad Truax (Interpol, others)), Kid Millions (Man Forever, Oneida), Barry London (Oneida), Matt Sweeney (Chavez, many others), Jesper Eklow (Endless Boogie, others), Mike Bones, and Papa Crazee (Oneida)), that’s hardly a disqualification from being a “band.” These are folks whose improvisational turns regularly outshine their recorded output. This show at Bowery Ballroom comes on the heels of the release in November 2015 of their record Early Risers, a more song-based affair, but of course that didn’t stop the crew from delving in one long, multi-movement sustained jam (which, I confess, may or may not include actual songs from the record). Though Cass McCombs was the night’s headliner, you might not have known it from looking at the packed floor of the venue, where it seemed an entire crew of heads were there just for this set, ultimately being replaced by yet-more people for Cass’s set. As with our excellent recent spate of Oneida shows, this was an experimental music fan’s dream, a can’t-miss experience from an outfit that you don’t see around here too often.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones in our usual spot together with a soundboard feed from Bowery legend Kenny. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Heliotropes: October 18, 2012 NYCTaper CMJ Day Show, Cake Shop – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

At first, it’s hard to grasp that the women of Heliotropes are your showcase’s heaviest band by far. From looking at them, you might not guess that the diverse group of young women makes monster, Sabbath-inspired rock with chunky, wah wah riffs and a raging backbeat. Also one of the newest acts on our CMJ day show bill, these ladies are kindred spirits of modern stoner/psych rockers like The Midnight Ghost Train, Pontiak and others, and they don’t hold back onstage. For a band whose current output consists of some singles on their bandcamp page, Heliotropes already have a well-developed sound and delivery – and based on this set at our unofficial CMJ day show at Cake Shop, are well on their way to an LP. Most of the tracks played at this show were new other than the released single “Ribbons”, and that new material is consistently hard hitting. The band closed out with a favorite of mine from Nirvana’s first album Bleach, the scorching “Negative Creep”, which the women of Heliotropes brought down in tempo a touch to give a more dirge-like sound to the song.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed provided by the day’s excellent engineer Justin together with Schoeps MK5 microphones in the cardiod setting mounted directly in front of the stage.  The sound is “in your face” and excellent. Enjoy!
