Godspeed You! Black Emperor: March 18, 2011 St. Paul’s Church – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The second night of Godspeed You! Black Emperor at The Church of St. Paul the Apostle was much like the first night — that is to say incredibly moving and powerful suites of music performed flawlessly to the backdrop of constantly changing film images. The difference with the second night was that after some noise complaints in the neighborhood, the volume of the concert was about half as loud as the previous evening. Fortunately, the church-pew-seated crowd was both attentive and not distracted — Godspeed mesmerized even at half the levels. All we needed to do was listen a little more closely. I’ll admit to reaching an emotional peak at the end of this concert during “Blaise Bailey Finnegan” that after two consecutive nights was a little overwhelming. I’m streaming the track below to confirm that I wasn’t imagining its depth.

This set was recorded in the same location and equipment at the first night at St. Paul’s. The sound quality is quite similar, although the lower levels somewhat reduced the dynamics of the church setting. Enjoy!

I want to thank the many readers of this blog who wrote friendly and complimentary emails about the reason for the delay of the post of this recording. It was acidjack who set me straight and told me that I really had to post this show and not punish the thousands of real fans of this band, and to ignore the rants of some mentally ill person in an inconsequential internet forum. So thanks to the real fans.

Thanks to Ronen and the Wordless Music Series for their generosity and support!

The Mountain Goats: March 29, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Tuesday night’s Bowery show was the second of three consecutive dates at the NYC venue, but it also happened to be the very day that the new the Mountain Goats album All Eternals Deck (Merge) was released. John Darneille spoke about his positive mental health on this particular release day — as well he should. All Eternals Deck is a superb album, and several of those songs featured at this show were already set highlights. We are streaming “Birth of Serpents” below, but we could well have featured the show opener “Liza Forever Minnelli”, “Damn These Vampires”, or a song which earned an encore slot on this night “Estate Sale Sign”. Despite the focus on the strong new material, John did not however forsake the vintage material and performed some outstanding older and more obscure songs, including “Home Again Garden Grove”, “Sinaloan Milk Snake Song”, and “Jeff Davis County Blues”, and even an unreleased song “Shower”. This night did not feature any special guests, but at nearly two hours, it was the longest show of the run.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the previous night and the sound quality is again superb. This are two bursts of static during “Seeing Daylight” that were caused when my recording machine was jostled during the cleanup of a full beer spilled on my stuff. Otherwise enjoy this excellent recording!

Trey Anastasio Band: February 22, 2011 Terminal 5 – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Despite how “jambands” seem to invoke the ire of quite a few people, it can’t be ignored that they attract a zealous following.  Bolstered by excellent musicianship and great songwriting, Phish has arguably been at the top of this genre for a long time and are able to sell out nearly every arena-sized (and larger) venue they play in.  That’s why it’s nice when the individual members indulge in their side projects, allowing them to kick back and play the smaller places like they did before becoming a multi-million dollar juggernaut.  I hadn’t been to a Phish concert for the better part of two decades when a few friends literally dragged me to see frontman Trey Anastasio last year.  It turned out to be a stellar gig and good enough to make me dip my toes back into the pond, so to speak.  With his return to Terminal 5 this year, there was no way I was going to miss it and it turned out to be money well spent.  Delving into the extensive catalog of material from his main band and solo jaunts, Trey and company split the performance into acoustic and electric sets, playing a lot of favorites and a few inspired, and some surprising, covers.  Judging by the great time the performers and the crowd were having, reinforced by the multiple sing-alongs during the course of the evening, I can understand why so many folks are continually drawn to them.

We recorded this show from the first balcony, nearly dead-center.  A few other people had the same idea and we had a blast turning the area into a taper’s section.  As with Phish, Trey Anastasio’s sound engineers are top-notch.  The house sound that night was superb and our recording reflects that.  Enjoy!

Godspeed You! Black Emperor: March 17, 2011 St. Paul’s Church – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

In our reviews of the first two Godspeed You! Black Emperor shows at Brooklyn’s Masonic Temple, acidjack truly captured the impact of a GYBE show. When the scene of the band’s NYC residency moved to The Church of St. Paul the Apostle in Lincoln Center on Thursday, the setting more closely matched the experience both visually and aurally. St. Paul’s is a huge classic old Catholic cathedral, and its hundred-foot high ceiling and intricate glasswork offered a challenge, but ultimately a fruitful reward for those listening closely. For the most part, the seated and somber setting permitted the crowd to sit in rapt attention and soak in the sonic landscapes created before them. While the band’s setlist was similar to the other NYC shows, on this particular night it was the intensity of the aural experience that ruled — in particular, GYBE’s superb sound technician Si dialed in the huge PA commissioned for these two shows and filled the room to perfection. Perhaps motivated by the surroundings, GYBE’s performance on this night was perhaps its most powerful of the week.

I recorded this set with the four microphone configuration mounted on a stand raised to fourteen feet and placed directly in front of the soundboard console. This placement was fortuitous, as the full realm of sound was captured in that part of the church. We are extremely pleased with the superb sound quality if this recording. We recommend listening on the best stereo speakers you can find. Enjoy!

Akron/Family: March 5, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Akron/Family shows tend to be celebratory affairs, so the end-of-tour sold-out show at Bowery Ballroom on Saturday night was quite likely the ultimate A/F affair. As the band is touring throughout the year behind the superb new album S/T II: The Cosmic Birth and Journey of Shinju TNT, the setlists have been geared primarily towards the new material, but on this night the band took their time and opened smoothly into a sweet version of the older “We All Will”, before launching to an extended “River”. Of the Shinju songs, “So It Goes” was quite electric on this night and we’ve chosen to stream it below. Several drum-oriented jams broke out during the evening, not the least of which closed out the incendiary “Raising the Sparks”, a song which had so impressed at Knitting Factory last month for entirely different reasons. In a true acknowledgment of the collective energy of the crowd, A/F closed the show with a full participatory version of “Love And Space” that extended for a full eight minutes. Akron/Family will start another tour in a few weeks, when they will play the West coast and the Soutwest.

I recorded this set with the four microphone rig from our standard balcony location in this venue and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Drive-By Truckers: February 15, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Being the standard-bearers for Southern rock can’t be an easy job and Drive-By Truckers not only do it well, but manage it with a smile on their faces.  Constant touring and marathon concerts that would hospitalize lesser people appear to make this group thrive and get better every time I’ve seen them perform.  Billed as the release show for their new album that had officially hit stores that day, the beautifully dark ‘Go-Go Boots‘, the band played nearly all the tracks from it during the course of this two and a half hour gig.  Both the disc and the night served as somewhat of a tribute to late songwriter/musician (and Patterson Hood family friend) Eddie Hinton who was honored not only with two covers of his songs, but also a beautiful take on the seldom-played “Sandwiches for the Road”.  In addition to a few acoustic spots, DBT filled out the set with tracks from all of their albums.  It made for an impressive night showcasing their outstanding and diverse talents.

Set up in our usual spot next to the soundboard in the balcony, the mix on this night was exceptional.  And in the Bowery Ballroom where it’s usually great, that’s saying something.  The resultant recording is excellent and ranks as one of the best I’ve personally ever pulled.  Enjoy!

The Giraffes: February 5, 2011 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Songs

I make no secret of my admiration for The Giraffes and have been consistently rewarded by them over the past 5+ years with amazing albums and some of the most incredible performances I’ve ever had the privilege to attend.  When I heard a rumor that this show would be lead singer Aaron Lazar’s last with the Brooklyn-based group and had the information confirmed, I was heartbroken.  And I wasn’t the only one.  As a testament to the popularity of this band (one that has been criminally overlooked by the mainstream), I personally received more requests to tape this night than every other show I’ve recorded combined; a few of them from South America and Europe.  Further fears were put to rest when I was assured that guitarist Damien Paris, drummer Andrew Totolos and bassist Jens Carstensen would continue on with The Giraffes.  Blazing through with nary a break, the gents brought out an impressive setlist that including superlative renditions of “Honey Baby Child”, “Sugarbomb” and the rare “On Lovers Lane”, among other gems.  The enthusiastic crowd, packed to the rafters in the sold-out venue, brought their A-game, too [see Todd Kancar’s photo below].  Riddled with stage divers, crowd surfers, people singing every word to every song and enough flashbulbs going off to induce an epileptic seizure, it wasn’t long before the gallons of alcoholic beverages flying through the air had covered nearly every available surface and person.  As I’ve remarked before, it takes an exceptional set of skills to be able to play under these conditions and, as always, these guys rose to the challenge.  We wish Aaron the best in his future endeavors and eagerly anticipate what Damien, Drew and Jens have in store for us with The Giraffes, v.4.0.

As a compliment to the mics, the always magnificent and accommodating house engineers, Kevin and Dan, supplied me with a feed from the board and were joined by guest engineer extraordinaire, Phil, for this set.  Aside from the bedlam unraveling on stage that resulted in the occasional, unavoidable vocal distortion and clipping from microphones being grabbed, dropped and yelled into by attendees, thanks to their first-rate work we have captured an excellent recording.  Enjoy and PLAY IT LOUD!!

Redemption is sweet, especially when it follows several years of intense struggle. On Tuesday, the New York Times published an article and interview with Nicole Atkins called “Musical Survivor Hustles for a Second Chance“, which describes her travails since she separated from Columbia Records. But the title is misleading. Nicole is not seeking a “second chance”, but rather with the release of Mondo Amore (Razor & Tie) this week, the ability to make the albums she envisions and to control her own fate. At the sold-out and breakout Bowery Ballroom show last night, Nicole Atkins proved that she is indeed up to the task and very much in control. As the nine-piece band bounded on stage, Nicole’s delayed entrance wasn’t so much for dramatic effect as to indicate who was in charge. As she led the band through a set that consisted of every track on the new album, a few songs from her first album, and some eclectic covers, Nicole proved that ultimately it all boils down to that voice — a magical instrument that bursts forth in every song with abundant character and melody. The highlights of the set included the set-closing thoroughly powerful “The Tower” in which her voice soared, and which is an early contender for performance of the year. The show concluded with a quiet and soulful performance of 2007’s “Neptune City”, a song which likely feels as if it was recorded in a different lifetime for Nicole, but which carries so much more redemptive meaning now.

I recorded this set with the four microphone rig from the balcony rail and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

The Decemberists: January 26, 2011 Beacon Theatre – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

On the final night of their 3-show run at Beacon Theatre, The Decemberists new album The King Is Dead reached number one on the Billboard album chart. Colin Meloy made one brief bemused reference to this fact at Wednesday night’s show, but this fairly major accomplishment seemed to not have fazed the band. Its a rare album that actually deserves a number one position, but King is truly a remarkable piece of work. While the title would imply a Smiths influence — and there is a definite “Bigmouth Strikes Again” feel to some of the songs — its the REM sound that prevails. In particular “Down By The Water” (streaming below) is very reminiscent of the 12-string minor-chord guitar prominent in such REM classics “The One I Love” and “Driver 8”. At the Beacon, five of the new songs were performed and they shined. Indeed, the beautiful “June Hymn” closed the show. In between, this night also featured the surprise guest appearance of Shara Worden, who reprised her soaring Hazards of Love vocals on “The Wanting Comes In Waves” (also streaming below). The Decemberists tour continues throughout the US in January and February before they head to Europe in March.

I recorded this set with my best mobile rig from a prime seat in 7th row of the center section where the sound quality was truly outstanding. This recording reflects that superb quality. Enjoy!
