The last time we checked in with Lee Ranaldo, he played the penultimate show in the history of Maxwell’s. At that point, Lee had a series of new songs that would eventually appear on his second post-Sonic Youth album Last Night on Earth which was ultimately released in October. Like its predecessor 2102’s Between the Times and the Tides, Last Night is a mature, honest and straightforward rock album. For the new album and the tours of 2013, Lee has credited his band “The Dust” which currently consists of downtown guitar wiz Alan Licht, bassist Tim Lüntzel and Sonic Youth drummer Steve Shelley. At the Bell House on Saturday night, Lee and the band played a lengthy set to a energetic crowd. All nine tracks of the new album were performed in the set along with selected older tracks and three interesting covers. It was the last night of the tour and Lee referenced the difficulties of a broken amp and a series of broken strings. But the band persevered and produced 100 minutes of outstanding music that was both tight and also offered a chance for the band to stretch out and jam. Lee Ranaldo and The Dust will appear again in NYC at the Union Pool on February 13.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted in the raised VIP area and mixed with an excellent board engineered by Lee’s tour FOH Jay Eigenmann. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Lee Ranaldo: July 28, 2012 Brewery Ommegang – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The embarrassment of riches that was our trip to Cooperstown was further enhanced by the quality of the support band, someone quite familiar to NYCTaper, Lee Ranaldo. Back in December, we recorded a couple of the earliest performances of Lee’s new band (Glasslands and Maxwells), but since he’s literally been touring the world since then, we had not seen Lee since those early shows. At Ommegang, his set began while the sun was still shining, and the forty-five minute set of material from Lee’s excellent new album Between the Times and the Tides seemed to fit the scene perfectly. Of course, the abundant availability of Belgian ales didn’t detract from the enjoyment, but this was still a special set. Lee’s band was joined for a couple of songs by Wilco’s keyboardist Pat Sansone, and for almost the entire set by Nels Cline. This intense version of “Xtina As I Knew Her” was supplemented by Nels’ signature guitar style, and we are streaming it below. Lee Ranaldo will return to NYC from the just-completed Wilco tour for a performance at ATP on Pier 36, on September 21.

Of the six NYCTaper rigs running for this set, we chose to mix my Sennheiser 8040 Cardioids with Acidjack’s AKG C 414’s in the omni setting. The mix gives a nice clear signal while also capturing the full soundstage and that “outdoor feel”. While our distance from the sound source (90 feet) was not optimal, this recording nevertheless provides a true “you were there” experience. Enjoy!

Lee Ranaldo: December 16, 2011 Glasslands + December 22, 2011 Maxwells – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

2011 was an interesting and eventful year for Lee Ranaldo. As the 30th anniversary of Sonic Youth approached, Thurston Moore and Kim Gordon split as a couple, and huge questions remained as to the continued existence of NYC’s foremost alternative rock band. Entirely coincidentally, Lee had also begun to work on a new set of songs that would ultimately comprise Between The Times & The Tides, released on March 20, 2012 on Matador Records. Other than another nonsensical hatchet job from the shark-jumpers over at Pitchfork, the album has received universal acclaim for being a superb set of well-executed songs — a “departure” from Lee’s previous experimental solo material. Back in December, the Lee Ranaldo band performed a number of local gigs, including a show at the Bell House, a headlining gig at Glasslands, and a surprise opening slot at Yo La Tengo’s Hanukkah shows at Maxwell’s. We were fortunate to capture two of these December events. The Glasslands show is a complete set including 9 of the 10 songs that appear on Between The Times, one cover and one of Lee’s Sonic Youth songs. The band includes SY’s drummer Steve Shelley, downtown guitar virtuoso Alan Licht and bassist Irwin Menken and the set was both well performed and well received by a packed crowd. Jesse Jarnow wrote an excellent piece for the Voice on the Glasslands gig. The unexpected appearance at Maxwell’s was a special treat — albeit a shorter opening set. Later that night, Lee and Steve would make an incendiary appearance during the YLT set (featured here), but the opening set was a heretofore unreported pleasure. We are streaming two songs from the Glasslands gig and one from Maxwell’s. Lee will be touring for the next couple of months, including dates opening for M Ward and a trip to Europe (dates here).

Each of these sets was recorded by mixing a soundboard feed with high end room microphones. For Glasslands, I utilized the DPA 4021s for warmth, and in Maxwell’s I used the Neumanns for clarity. The sound quality in each recording is different but each is superb. Enjoy!

Kurt Vile: December 26, 2011 Maxwell’s – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

2011 has been a tremendous year for Kurt Vile, and the kicker was that his last show of the year was an opportunity to open one of the legendary Yo La Tengo Hanukkah shows on Monday. Smoke Ring For My Halo has been on every end of the year best-of list for 2011 — I’m not exaggerating, its literally been on every list I’ve seen. And for good reason. Smoke Ring is an album that seems to finally realize the full potential of Vile’s rich talents. The 2011 release is well-produced, but still captures the artist’s underground qualities and esoteric lyrics while also featuring fully formed melodies. At Maxwell’s, Kurt performed with what is most likely the final gig of this version of the Violators. Adam Granduciel was on lead guitar for this show, but has growing commitments as the War On Drugs continues its ascent in stature. On Monday, the band opened with a cover of the Feelies, one of Maxwell’s “house bands”, and then continued with much of Smoke Ring. We are streaming “Ghost Town”, the albums’s final climactic track.

I recorded this set in the same manner at the Yo La Tengo recording from this night and the sound quality is superb.

Condo Fucks: November 4, 2011 Mercury Lounge – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Condo Fucks exist as an alternative reality where Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley and James McNew can perform as an authentic 60’s garage band playing a selection of eclectic covers without the need to actually be Yo La Tengo at any point during the evening. On Friday night at Mercury Lounge, the alter-ego of one of the favorite bands of this site delivered a blistering thirty-five minute set that left the packed crowd shaking their heads in awe. As we have witnessed so many times at Yo La Tengo shows, the band is comprised of three of the most knowledgeable music fans around — they are literally encyclopedias of 20th Century popular music. So it was no surprise that the Mercury setlist contained only two songs from the sole Condo Fucks release, 2009’s Fuckbook. Instead, the band played eleven other covers, ranging from 50’s R&B, to 60’s iconoclasts The Fugs, to obscure early 70’s proto-punk (electric eels, Richard Hell), to 80’s alternative (Television Personalities), all performed in a high-speed, feedback-drenched, vocally-distorted garage sound. When the set ended far too soon with the Flamin’ Groovies “Dog Meat” (streaming below), a song originally actually recorded on a two-track cassette deck in an actual garage, we took solace in the fact that for their Hanukkah shows in a few weeks, Yo La Tengo will undoubtedly dig out some of these songs to spice up the eight shows’ setlists. See you then.

I recorded this set with the Neumann microphones mounted at the soundboard booth and combined with a perfectly mixed board feed. Per the band’s instructions, the vocals were mixed at maximum levels to capture that authentic overdriven 60’s garage sound, and the venue’s team captured that sound perfectly. Enjoy!
