GG King: September 6, 2019 Hopscotch Music Festival (Raleigh, NC)

October 3, 2019
By

Among the bounty of riches at every Hopscotch Music Festival is the variety of punk shows that get put on, both throughout the day show circuit and during the official evening events. Out of a particularly good crop this year, one of my very favorite punk acts was the Atlanta band GG King, who played both this official evening set at Kings and then a day show set at Neptune’s (the downstairs room of the same club) the following day.

This set shows the band at its best, playing high-velocity, hardcore-inflected punk. Frontman Greg “GG” King hails from the defunct hometown favorite the Carbonas, who were at it from 2001 to 2009, and his eponymous band continues many of the things people loved about his last band. In particular, both had a certain pop sensibility that, without making either act cheesy or soft, give them appeal beyond their core audience. This night’s song selection should satisfy both the new fan and the veteran alike; you can hear many of the studio versions on these rehearsal demos streaming on their label’s bandcamp page. Once you’re done here, I recommend you stream your way over to Scavenger of Death Records and discover the rest of what GG King has to offer.

I recorded this set with MBHO microphones into the warm n’ fuzzy Aerco preamp. My man Dave Schwentker was kind enough to track this one out so we could present it to you. Enjoy!

Elkhorn: September 21, 2019 Nublu

October 2, 2019
By

Last weekend’s Elkhorn show at Nublu was something of a belated release party for their double-LP Sun Cycle / Elk Jam set from earlier this year. That album brings Jesse Sheppard and Drew Gardner together with Willie Lane on guitar and Ryan Jewell on drums for two sides of composed songs followed two more sides of improvisation caught during the same session. Like Sheppard comments during the show, the unique makeup of the Elkhorn quartet makes live outings of some of the songs pretty infrequent, so it was extra special to see the whole gang together for this one.

Their set begins with the duo playing “Darkness” and “Song of the Son” into “Wilderness,” before Ryan Jewell joins on tablas for “Subway Mirror Heart.” It gets into full quartet swing when Willie Lane joins for the back half of the set, playing with them on “Altun Ha,” “Seasonal” into “Distances,” and the set-closing “Train.” It’s great to see Elkhorn getting a long set and really settling in like this—we’re used to seeing way-too-brief outings from them. Let these guys stretch their, um, horns, and they’ll chart you out some new paths.

I recorded this from our usual spot at Nublu and as usual for the venue, the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Planting Moon: September 6, 2019 Three Lobed / WXDU Annual Ritual of Summoning (Raleigh, NC)

September 30, 2019
By

Planting Moon, of Asheville, NC, didn’t quite debut at this year’s Three Lobed / WXDU Annual Ritual of Summoning, but it’s fair to say this was a key performance by a new band — one that landed the right way on these ears. This combo of guitarists Sarah Louise and Nathan Olson, together with drummer Thom Nguyen, takes full of advantage of these players’ improvisational talents, with Louise adding occasional vocals to her heady guitar interplay with Olson.

This was one of my favorite sets of this year’s Hopscotch — not only are Planting Moon excellent, but their gigs to date have been largely local affairs. Along with the marquee national and international acts (who all play New York eventually), this festival is a chance to see the best acts coming out of North Carolina, particularly the vibrant scenes in Raleigh/Durham/Chapel Hill and Asheville. Trust me, Planting Moon check that box in a big way.

I recorded this set with the same three-source setup I used throughout the day, with onstage Schoeps MK5s carrying the load, together with a soundboard feed and MBHO mics back at the soundboard to capture the room feel. This one sounds great, folks. Enjoy!

Moon Duo: September 7, 2019 Hopscotch Music Festival (Raleigh, NC)

September 27, 2019
By

Not so long after catching an infrequent Wooden Shjips sighting at Brooklyn Bowl a few months back, we were lucky enough to see Ripley Johnson with his other (no less important) project Moon Duo close out the Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh, NC at our fave spot there, Kings.

Most exciting about this set was the fact that it comes just before the release of the band’s latest album, Stars Are the Light, a record that finds Sanae Yamada and Ripley wading further into the dance music arena. While you won’t find Moon Duo headlining a big EDM festival anytime soon, the vibe and texture of the new material has an airier lean to it. Yamada has cited disco as an inspiration for these songs, and you can hear it from the album’s title song as well as many of the new numbers that made their way into this night. If you’ve heard the second volume of Occult Architecture – billed the “light” side of that double album – then think of Stars Are the Light as the next logical evolution of that material. It’s a heck of a lot of fun to anytime, but it proved an especially fine coda to a multi-night music festival for me. Rounding out the new material, and the set, was a curveball cover, in this case Alan Vega’s “Jukebox Babe,” which the band released as a single last year.

Stars Are the Light hits the streets today, September 27, so do yourself a favor and head over to Sacred Bones Records or the band’s bandcamp to dig in.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed, together with MBHO mics and the Aerco preamp for some warm goodness. Enjoy!

Tropical Fuck Storm: September 20, 2019 Elsewhere & September 9, 2019 Hopscotch

September 23, 2019
By

Tropical Fuck Storm is a band name you’re probably too old to be wearing on a t-shirt, but do anyway because the shirt’s hilarious in an 80’s-futurism kind of way, and because you’re pretty high on Tropical Fuck Storm after they play, and because the merch table is nearly picked clean after their tour and it’s nice to send a band home with nothing left, and because their post-apocalyptic music is a reason maybe to not believe the apocalypse is coming any moment now, and because they come from the same place as Mad Max, and Liars, and because Tropical Fuck Storm just don’t give a fuck, but no Tropical Fuck Storm do seem to give a fuck, and it’s so damn hard to give a fuck…

We were lucky enough to catch Tropical Fuck Storm twice this month: at Elsewhere on Friday for their last show of the tour, and previously at Hopscotch at the tiny, overflowing Neptune’s. Both shows feature songs from their most recent album Braindrops along with last year’s A Laughing Death in Meatspace, plus a couple covers and the usual Drones song, “Baby Squared.” There’s really no doing justice to seeing Tropical Fuck Storm in person, but you’ll have to close your eyes and pretend. The band is touring Australia and Europe soon and you can check those dates here. Do go see them and buy a t-shirt so people can ask you things like what the fuck is Tropical Fuck Storm? and aren’t you a little old to be wearing a shirt that says Tropical Fuck Storm?

I recorded the Elsewhere show from our usual location at the soundboard, with a feed provided by FOH Katie. Acidjack recorded the Hopscotch show on his mobile rig. Both shows sound excellent. Enjoy!

One Eleven Heavy: September 1, 2019 Union Pool

September 10, 2019
By

One Eleven Heavy’s second LP, Desire Path, doubles down on the seventies boogie rock vibe that made Everything’s Better so irresistible. Building on the first record’s foundation, though, it ventures further into loose, Dead-inspired jams with songs like “Chickenshit” and “Hot Potato Soup.” It’s a pure delight for anyone who’s ever owned a Dead record or discovered the other side of country music with Numero’s Comic American Music compilation.

I was pretty jazzed to finally see One Eleven Heavy—their short tour last year was full of misfortunes including a van accident and a venue closure that preempted their Brooklyn gig. Unthwarted, they’ve been touring the U.S. this month, beginning with this record-release show at Union Pool and winding up back where they began with a tour-capper this Saturday, September 14th at Trans-Pecos. (Grab your tickets!) For a band so with members so geographically separated, they sound here like they play together every day. I highly recommend you get yourself out to Trans-Pecos this weekend for a surefire good time.

I recorded this from our usual location at Union Pool, with MBHO mics in DIN stereo configuration, combined with a board feed. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Garcia Peoples: August 7, 2019 Brooklyn Bowl & July 27, 2019 Market Hotel

Photos from Brooklyn Bowl by Christopher Bruno

In case you’ve been hibernating for the summer, you should know that Garcia Peoples have a new album out on October 18, One Step Behind. It’s a two song deal, with the title track being a newly-recorded 32-minute version of the song that’s been a staple in their live sets for a while now. You can preorder that for October delivery and get an 8-minute radio edit immediately. Can’t wait to hear the whole thing! The second song on the record is a new one, “Heart and Soul,” that you can preview here from their recent Brooklyn Bowl gig opening up for Howlin’ Rain and Ryley Walker. A couple other songs make their first appearance on one of our recordings: “Gliding Through” and “One at a Time,” plus a jam I’m pretty sure we’ve heard before in some form.

Then travel back to July when the Garcias played with Chris Forsyth at Market Hotel. We’ve already posted their set backing Forsyth, but here finally is the proper Garcia Peoples set. And by the way, you can see the Garcia Peoples backing Chris Forsyth again this Friday September 6 at Nublu. Do not miss that!

For more of that very necessary Garcia Peoples fix they’re playing Philadelphia on Sept 14 with Chris Forsyth and Sept 29 in Asbury Park with Real Estate. Then in October, they’ll be doing a residency at Nublu every Thursday night. Wow!

I recorded this with a pair of MBHO hypercardioid mics positioned at our usual spot at Brooklyn Bowl. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Not much left to be said here at NYCTaper about our bud Ryley Walker, except that he’s a good reason to keep going out and recording shows. Always different, always the same? Anyway this one’s got a beautiful “Spoil With the Rest” (personal fav) and an epic take on “The Roundabout.” Never one to take a break, Ryley’s got a ton of upcoming shows including a tour with Black Mountain and more. For locals, there’s a can’t-miss duo set with David Grubbs coming up on September 12 at Trans-Pecos. See you there!

Joshua Abrams Natural Information Society: June 7, 2019 Union Pool

July 1, 2019
By

First off, a very important heads up: Joshua Abrams Natural Information Society are playing tonight, July 1, at Roulette with 75 Dollar Bill! This is going to be a special show, in celebration of the release 75DB’s latest record I Was Real, and a rare opportunity to catch Joshua Abrams and NIS in Brooklyn. Grab tickets here!

Mandatory Reality, the latest double-LP from Joshua Abrams Natural Information Society, sounds like a band erasing borders. The second track, “Finite,” approaches 40 minutes, testing the limits of physical media as well as the listener’s compass. On some other plane (I’m convinced) it must loop back on itself to continue on forever in its meditative rhythms, an endless groove. Confined to the physical world, the album nevertheless seems to have no beginnings or endings, but drops you in media res, as the poets do, filling in the geographical landmarks and relief as it goes. Titling a 40 minute song “Finite” is a promise to the wayward traveler.

Last month’s Union Pool gig was my first chance to see Abrams and company live. The experience is like being let on something intimate, a sacred ritual opened up to new members. For 50 minutes we were collectively transported into the world of Natural Information Society. Capturing the ecstatic sounds for later transmission couldn’t possibly contain the multitudes of their performance, but does offer a glimpse of Abrams’ vision. Again, I’m going to strongly urge you to go see (and hear) for yourself tonight at Roulette. Spread the word!

I recorded this from our usual spot at Union Pool, room mics mixed with a board feed. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

SUSS: May 21, 2019 Union Pool

June 23, 2019
By

SUSS is a new musical collaboration from some old hands—Gary Leib, Pat Irwin, Jonathan Gregg and William Garrett, under the general direction of Bob Holmes. Between them there are too many credentials to list, all over the map and everywhere in between. Straddling the intersection of ambient and country/western music, SUSS sound like the future and the past, sci-fi folded over on spaghetti westerns. It’s music that would be appropriate for both a trip to Death Valley and aboard the International Space Station; however, your living room will do in a pinch.

SUSS have played a few shows lately supporting last year’s Ghost Box, released by the reliably adventurous New York label, Northern Spy Records. They’ve got a new 7″ as well, “Chisholm Trail” b/w “Aurora,” the latter previewed last month live at Union Pool, the vinyl due out this Friday. SUSS take it low and slow here, measuring out improvised passages blending into the album’s compositions. In person, the interior Brooklyn environs melted away as the band mapped desert territories under the stars. This recording will take you partway there, but I also recommend heading out to see them live your first opportunity. Do also head over to Bandcamp, where you can pick up the record and single.

I recorded this from our usual spot at Union Pool, an expert board mix from FOH Leslie Wolf combined with room mics. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!
