Hiss Golden Messenger: June 2, 2015 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Maybe an opening set by Hiss Golden Messenger at Music Hall of Williamsburg doesn’t merit quite the word count I gave April’s homecoming show at Haw River Ballroom in Saxapahaw, NC. But it was the biggest New York stage on which I’ve seen this band, and that makes it another milestone for M.C. Taylor and his fellow travelers. Fresh off a European tour, the band spent this first of two nights in New York opening for the Tallest Man on Earth, but judging the room capacity at the start of this set, HGM was the night’s draw for many of us. This was almost the exact same band we saw back at Haw River — Taylor, bassist Brad Cook, his brother Phil on keys, and Matt McCaughan on drums — minus William Tyler.

Clearly, this team is road-tested and hitting their stride, seeming to have found an even deeper, jammier groove than when we saw them in North Carolina. This sound gels well with the Lateness of Dancers record, so it makes sense that its songs — “Southern Grammar” and “I’m A Raven (Shake Children)” feel like centerpieces on this run. We were also thrilled to hear the new song “Say It Like You Mean It” for the second time. It’s possibly the most “rock” song the band has done to date, and should be a live staple for the foreseeable future. But even at that, it ended up being a Poor Moon song that stole this particular show, as the journeyman sax player Michael Lewis joined the band for the definitive live version of “Blue Country Mystic,” with Lewis adding a new layer to a song whose current live arrangement already feels transformed from its album version. While you’d always prefer to see a band you love as a headliner, I suspect this and some even higher-profile opening slots are going to earn HGM a lot of new fans, and they seem poised and ready to do it.

HGM will remain on the road June and July, touring with My Morning Jacket, hitting festivals, and returning to the general vicinity of NYC on July 25 for a show at Woodstock’s Bearsville Theater. See all the dates here.

Waxahatchee: April 9, 2015 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

We last saw Waxahatchee, aka Katie Crutchfield, in the least ideal of circumstances, after Hurricane Sandy had prevented her band from joining her for the Don Giovanni showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Nonetheless, she played a memorable, vulnerable impromptu solo set that captivated us and had a lot of fans. Now, in 2015, she was back at MHOW with a full band that included her twin sister, Allison (of Swearin‘) and Ashley Arnwine of Bleeding Rainbow and Pinkish, who brought the musical skill to bring her songs to life. An Alabama native, Crutchfield took off with her second album, Cerulean Salt, but it should be her recent Merge Records release, Ivy Tripp, that takes her to the next level, giving her both the biggest sound, and the biggest exposure for it, yet. This show was way sold out, and I suspect that’ll be a trend.

This show kicked off with one of Ivy Tripp‘s best songs, “Breathless”, followed by a more rocking track from that album, “Under A Rock”. From there, the band jumped primarily between the last two albums, including a fiery “Waiting” and the leadoff single to Ivy Tripp, “Air”. Crutchfield’s strength lies in both the phrasing and style of her voice as well as her vocal content; she’s not afraid for her audience to actually hear what she has to say. Her songs can cut you to the quick; they’re personal, rich, and forceful.

In addition to more muscular full-band numbers, Waxahatchee didn’t shy from returning to her solo roots, performing an encore that included two of the standout tracks from her first record, “Grass Stain” and “Noccalula”, along with new track “Summer of Love”. She may have come a long way from her lo-fi solo roots, but what makes Crutchfield great hasn’t changed.

Grooms: February 17, 2015 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Many bands are forced to admit that their best album was probably their first. Grooms can take pleasure in having just released their high watermark four albums in. That album, Comb the Feelings Through Your Hair, marries their sense of melody and pop appeal to a level of musical skill befitting a band that has stayed together long enough to see personnel come and go, but emerge stronger in the process. A three-piece, Grooms manage to make their music rhythmically complex (thanks in no small part to drummer Steve Levine, who recently enjoyed notoriety on TV’s Better Call Saul) without overcomplicating it, and that works especially well live. Watching the three men onstage, you more appreciate how their arrangements leave room to feel what each player is doing.

This show at Music Hall of Williamsburg, on a bill shared with A Place to Bury Strangers (that set here), celebrated the new record’s release, but didn’t park the setlist there. Starting with a rapid succession of new songs, Grooms then dug back in to 2013’s under-toured Infinity Caller and even their debut Rejoicer, the band gave us a sense of the continuity in their music as well as some of the new ideas percolating in Comb the Feelings. While the album itself is the band’s best-produced to date, adding lush electronics to the band’s guitar-bass-drums mix, the live versions proved that the record isn’t just a success on that account. Songs like the title track are more than just well put together; they’re just good songs. Grooms were one of many bands tied to Death By Audio (including A Place to Bury Strangers), and now, like their scene itself, they will enter a different phase. So far, it’s working for them.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 microphones in the soundboard cage. The sound quality is quite good for a straight audience recording. Enjoy!

A Place to Bury Strangers: February 17, 2015 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

A Place to Bury Strangers are one of several bands that incubated in the scene (and the sound) that grew up around Death By Audio and its line of effects pedals, making it fitting that they headlined Music Hall of Williamsburg just months after that venue’s untimely end. Though the band arrived on the scene just over ten years ago (in 2003), it feels like it’s been eons in musical terms. Today, their dark tone, blown out guitar sound, and relentless, ambitious live show feels vaguely foreign to the current indie mainstream, but that is as it should be. This kind of music may or may not always be a “trend”, but it will always have the ability to seize a crowd, and keep it.

It’s fitting that the band opened with “We’ve Come So Far”: The number comes from Transfixiation, the brand-new album whose release was being celebrated that night, and it also describes this band’s history. With only one consistent member throughout (frontman Oliver Ackermann), the now-trio has continued to hone a sound much more consistent than its personnel changes would suggest. From the obvious MBV homage of their self-titled 2007 debut, the band has both added layers and stripped them away, leaving them at the more tightly focused Transfixiation, which takes a few steps back from the wall of noise to find some new melodies — and a bit of extra weirdness — underneath.

Not that you’d have been able to tell at the album release show. From the first peals of guitar noise to the militaristic percussion of “So Far Away”, the band blanketed itself in noise, barely pausing between songs. Ackerman, drummer Robi Gonzalez and bassist Dion Lunadon were only intermittently visible in a sea of smoke, pierced by a frenetic light show and backed by abstract visuals. Ackermann and Lunadon hurled themselves around the stage as a mosh pit that churned below them; this was no polite Tuesday night show. It might be fair to say you can’t really get APTBS until you’ve seen them live, or at least, it’s very hard to convey the feeling of their music through a home stereo or some iPhone headphones. APTBS’ sound demands darkness, attention and crowd participation to fully land, and over and over on this night, it did.

Band and crowd literally became one during the encore portion of the set, when the band set up just in front of the venue’s soundboard to play three more songs as the audience closed in around them, the flashes of smartphone cameras replacing the strobe lights that had been up on the stage. If it didn’t quite replicate the intimacy of Death By Audio, it showed that this band deserved to grow to a level well beyond it, and to keep going. They’re the kind of band live music was made for, and they did right by us tonight.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones set up inside the soundboard cage. APTBS’ FOH, Lex, was in charge of the house mix. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Stars: November 10, 2014 Music Hall of Williamsburg – Flac/MP3/Streaming

This past Monday night, the Stars began their tour in support of new album No One Is Lost and made their third stop in Brooklyn at the Music Hall of Williamsburg. After a fantastic opening set from fellow Canadian band Hey Rosetta!, the Stars took the stage to the sweet, lonely lilt of Judy Garland and promptly kicked off the party with the first single from their new album, “From The Night.” The sold-out crowd apparently read an album review or three and figured a dance party might happen, so when the retro disco beat kicked in and singers Torquil Campbell and Amy Millan hit the chorus, it felt like the weekend was back in full force.

Much of the press about the new album has focused on how the band is making more dance tunes — and yes, Millan did collaborate on a recent track with EDM DJ Porter Robinson. But the real story seems to be that the cute, ironic fatalism that was present in the younger band’s work has evolved; the cabaret has shuttered because the stakes are too high. In fact, during the recording of No One Is Lost, the band’s long-time tour manager, Eoin O’Leary, was diagnosed with cancer. So if the Stars are guilty as charged of making a big fat dance album, so be it; O’Leary is now in recovery, and there is cause to celebrate.

On Monday, while there was certainly plenty of dancing, there was also a huge variety. Slow burners, disco tracks, and the good old-fashioned pop songs the Stars are known for — they made sure the setlist had something in it for everyone. The lineup was a mix of brand new songs and deep cuts dating all the way back to their debut album, Nightsongs. One of, if not the very highest points of the night was a reworked version of “Going, Going, Gone,” which Emily Haines of Metric sang with the band back in 2001. While the original version is earnest, spare and stripped down, the new version they performed Monday night featured melancholy synths, a minimalist backbeat, and heartbreakingly beautiful vocals. The new version felt more like a downtempo afterhours clubby version of the Stars — in the best of ways.

Other highlights included 2012’s “Hold On When You Get Love and Let Go When You Give It,” a sing-along for crowd favorite “Elevator Love Letter,” and a raucous new song called “Trap Door” that would make Ric Ocasek proud. The band closed out the main set with the new album’s title track, and all the arms in the venue went up in unison at the refrain: “Put your hands up because everybody dies!”

I recorded Stars using a pairs of Schoeps hypercardiod microphones and a soundboard feed graciously provided by the band and house engineers. They did an outstanding job and the sound quality is excellent. We hope you enjoy!

Built to Spill: May 20, 2014 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

There was a period in this site’s history during the 2009-2010 range where we collectively saw Built to Spill more than ten times in a short span (four shows in October 2009 alone). Most bands seen that often that close together would burn you out for good, but we have continued to follow Doug Martsch and his outstanding band since then. The reason Martsch feels he can continue playing New York with such frequency — even when he doesn’t have new material on offer — is that the show doesn’t just go on, its gets better every time. This performance at Music Hall of Williamsburg was easily the best BTS performance I have seen in all of the many times I have experienced this band.

Without the burden of promoting a new album, Martsch felt free to let he and the band’s whimsies roam, playing classic BTS songs like “Stab” from There’s Nothing Wrong With Love alongside newer favorites like “Planting Seeds”. We got songs that were great, short bursts; we also got a nearly ten-minute “Goin’ Against Your Mind” straight into “Carry the Zero” to close out the main set. But what set this show apart were its four cover songs. If you haven’t heard Martsch do his best J. Mascis impersonation, now you can, on this epic cover of Dinosaur Jr.‘s “Sludgefeast”. Or if classic rock is more your thing, you couldn’t go wrong with this phenomenal note-for-note rendition of Blue Öyster Cult’s “Don’t Fear the Reaper”, or BTS’ take on The Byrds’ “Eight Miles High”. The night ended, as did the Brooklyn Bowl show, with the craziest cover of all — a seventeen-minute free-for-all to the tune of “Genius of Love” by Tom Tom Club, which found the audience joining the band on stage for an epic, old-style Brooklyn dance party. It was the kind of thing a band with two fewer decades’ experience might have done, a lark to put a punctuation mark on the night. But that’s the genius of Built to Spill — whether the songs are new or old, the show never stays the same.

I recorded this set along with Johnny Fried Chicken Boy from our usual spot in the balcony directly over the soundboard cage, using Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones. With some careful editing to mitigate the boomy nature of the house mix, this recording is excellent. Enjoy!

Holy Wave: April 23, 2013 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Austin band Holy Wave didn’t shy from the task of warming up the Music Hall of Williamsburg crowd last month before GOAT’s epic performance (that one here). Rocking a dense, intricate psychedelic style reminiscent of bands like The Black Angels and the Brian Jonestown Massacre, the band played material from their current release, Evil Hits (a combination of their The Evil Has Landed and Knife Hits EPs) plus new material that we hope will see the light of day soon. Set against the backdrop of swirling live light projections, the band gave us a taste of what they had in store for the Austin Psych Fest, which they played later that week, and gave us an appropriate intro to the wild GOAT set that was to follow.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the GOAT recording, with MBHO microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Mike Doughty: June 19, 2013 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Songs + Full Set

Fans of Mike Doughty, previously known as “M Doughty”, lead singer of seminal ’90s oddballs Soul Coughing, may already be familiar with the journey of self-discovery that led him to abandon his role as frontman of a popular act to become a freewheeling solo performer, with the waypoints of addiction and recovery (not to mention what some incorrectly interpreted as a religious conversion) along the way. Mike told the whole story in his 2012 memoir, The Book of Drugs, but if you followed his solo work from early last decade to now, much of the story was already there for the taking.

Though Mike’s solo efforts have abandoned some of the more frenetic elements of the Soul Coughing sound, which culled rhythmic textures from soul, funk and hip-hop, his solo work retains that band’s most distinctive element — Mike’s voice. Though his voice won’t be accused of having big-rock-singer range, it is one of the most distinctive of recent decades. A kind of sing-speak whose flow is at times reminiscent of hip-hop and scatting, Doughty’s voice is custom-built for storytelling. Similarly, his lyrics are smart, evocative, and unabashedly original. Nobody sees the world quite the way that Mike Doughty does.

This set, performed opening for Low at Music Hall of Williamsburg, found Doughty in the format with which he’s now most comfortable, stripped down to him, an acoustic guitar and a drummer. For almost a full hour, Mike led us on a journey through his entire solo career, from early 2000s work from Skittish and Rockity Roll (now available as a single 2-record release) such as “Shunned + Falsified”, “Ossining” and his first solo single, “27 Jennifers”, to his newest work like “Na Na Nothing” (which Doughty claims was “partially stolen” from a song written by Nikki Sixx, Dan Wilson and Matt Gerrard) and his cover of John Denver’s “Take Me Home, Country Road”. Even on the fairly large Music Hall stage, Mike’s set felt like an intimate evening in a living room, with Mike amiably taking (and turning down some) requests and making his fair share of self-deprecating jokes. One of my personal favorites, and one of the most obviously autobiographical, was “Looking At the World From the Bottom of A Well” from 2005’s Haughty Melodic. It’s worth noting that that record also represented Mike’s first major-label record since leaving Soul Coughing and spending the first half the decade self-releasing his records and touring under his own steam. The music world has fewer great second acts than maybe it ought to, but Mike’s is one of the most inspiring of all. Our affection for the band Low is well-known; we were blown away by their performance earlier this year at the Society for Ethical Culture, touring behind their latest record The Invisible Way, as well as the performance by Alan Sparhawk’s other band, Retribution Gospel Choir, at Knitting Factory that found that band guesting with frequent Wilco collaborator Nels Cline.

These two almost back-to-back shows, first at Music Hall of Williamsburg, and next at the Solid Sound Festival — where our now-famous Wilco recording came from — did nothing to dim that affection. Despite the more traditional club setting, this Music Hall set was a subtler, less rocking affair than the show in the church, with fewer of Sparhawk’s guitar pyrotechnics and more emphasis on the band’s more traditionally “slowcore” numbers, including some rarer early material. But the highlight for me was the night’s biggest rocker, “Canada”, from the band’s album Trust and no longer a set regular. Likewise, at Solid Sound, Low continued to demonstrate why they’ve enjoyed a nearly 20-year career with no sign of slowing down, playing a set that differed significantly from just a few nights before. They may call this “slow”-core, but this has been a band of constant and exciting momentum.

The Music Hall recording suffered from some early technical issues that required me to switch to my mics a few songs in. The first and fourth songs of the set are missing as a result, the second song fades in, and the fifth, “Holy Ghost”, contains the noise of me setting up the mics. Once things settled down, it was smooth sailing from there and the sound was excellent. The Solid Sound set, graciously provided by DC-based site collaborator Kubacheck, is likewise an excellent recording, albeit with a bit more crowd chatter and made at more distance than the Music Hall show. It also has none of the Music Hall show’s flaws. Please enjoy!

The impenetrable Swedish collective Goat became a lot better known in the gap between when PopGun Booking announced their U.S. debut at Glasslands and when the show finally happened — by then at a sold-out Music Hall of Williamsburg. Their first proper release World Music is exactly that — European psych-rock mated to the sounds of the Western Sahara. Shocking Blue meets Group Doueh. Made up of a rotating cast of villagers from the Swedish town of Korpilombolo who have been playing together for several decades (or so the story goes), the current players in Goat would seem to manage the rare feat of being a holy trifecta of mysterious, entertaining and authentic. Even if the Swedish psych rock tag is the easiest, Goat is hardly mystical stoner music, with a heavy, danceable backbeat. Their stage presence is geared to that, as well as maintaining their mystique. All of the players appear in masks and tribal costumes, and two dancer/singers perform up front. The result is a swirling, colorful fantasia of sound and positive rock and roll unlike anything else I’ve seen. Even if the band’s shadowy origins turn out to be less fanciful than they originally appear, this will still be a band to have on your list for the festival circuit this summer and beyond.

I recorded this set with MBHO KA200N cardiod microphones and a custom made analog preamp for a warm, natural sound. The result is excellent. Enjoy!
