Amen Dunes: February 8, 2014 Glasslands – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Amen Dunes will release their new album Love (Sacred Bones) on May 13, and in late February they released a song “Lonely Richard” as a preview. Early in February, we captured the band’s short opening slot at Glasslands and the set featured two new songs including “Rocket Flare” (streaming below). The new Amen Dunes album isn’t like the previous two which were essentially Damon McMahon’s bedroom studio project. Love is a fully formed studio work produced by members of Godspeed and featuring multiple guests. But McMahon hasn’t abandoned what had made this group so compelling from the start and what impressed us so much for two recordings back in 2012 — a sort of mysterious, reverb-laden psychedelic sound that conjures up a litany of influences while not entirely lifting from any of them.

I recorded this set with our installed Naiant rig and mixed with an excellent soundboard feed provided by house FOH Josh. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Vivian Girls: March 2, 2014 Baby’s All Right (Final Show!) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Oh, the Vivian Girls. You know you’ve been around awhile when you have witnessed the entire life cycle of a band like this. It wasn’t that long ago, to us, that our then-young site was covering an up-and-coming all-female band at places like the East Village Radio Fest and some extremely random ToddP venues. Pretty soon, like any good little band that could, the Vivs were playing spots like Bowery Ballroom. They were loved, yet not universally so, and maybe that’s as clear a sign as any that they mattered. As so eloquently summed up in Jenn Pelly’s comprehensive Pitchfork piece, if you didn’t like the band because they were “lo fi”, if you didn’t like the band because they weren’t avant-garde or music school enough, well, that’s on you. The Vivs wrote good songs. They wrote songs that sounded good in the spaces where their people were, in shitty apartments and on shitty rented PAs and, yes, on those shitty white iPhone headphones, by then ubiquitous. In their moment, as an all-female guitar band, they broke ceilings, too.

It’s fitting that this final show took place at the brand-spanking-new Baby’s All Right, a type of venue that would’ve been almost-unthinkable in the Williamsburg of 2007, when the Vivs hit the scene. Baby’s has a real liquor license, cool stage lights, a professional sound system. There’s a full-service restaurant in it that can (with 24 hours notice) serve you a whole pig. A bar that serves microbrews, makes a decent Old Fashioned. It’s a far cry from Monster Island Basement, or even Zebulon or Music Hall‘s old ghost, Northsix.

But what hasn’t changed is as important as what has. Like old times, the band played loud to a crowd where everyone knew the songs. People crowd surfed, and you could also find the band members out there too, Katy Goodman rocking out on the floor, surrounded by her peers (and maybe even a few curious synthpop refugees). This is one of those “last shows” that may give itself the lie, in the end, and that’s OK. These women aren’t quitting music — even, in a general sense, this band’s style of music. Goodman has La Sera (our most recent recording here), Cassie Ramone has The Babies (our best recording here), Ali Koehler has Upset. Goodman reminded us backstage that La Sera have a new record out this May on Hardly Art; look for a new song to debut this week and check out a preview YouTube clip here.

So enjoy these old songs, then, for what they are: A once-in-a-lifetime quality rendering of them, ramshackle sounds going out in style. The Girls were having fun, in front of friends as well as their parents. The lucky few got to see “Out For the Sun” descend into noise jam territory as the band members cavorted onstage and with the audience, taking the energy of the room to its peak. The three-song encore did everything it needed to send them off right: their cover of The Wipers‘ “Telepathic Love”, followed by “All The Time” straight into the night’s closer, “No”. Just under one hour and eighteen songs, and that was it. Balloons got popped, shots got drunk, there were goodbyes. It wasn’t exactly the end of an era, but it was an end, and a great one.

We are truly grateful to the Vivian Girls, Baby’s All Right engineer Devin Foley, and their entire team for allowing us the level of access we had to make this final recording. This is an 18-track digital multitrack recording from the soundboard that also includes two Naiant audience mics to capture the spirit of the crowd and sound of the room. It may still be “lo fi” by studio standards, but by the site’s standards, this is one for the ages. We hope you enjoy.

Big Ups: February 21, 2014 Shea Stadium – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

March 2, 2014
By

walter-wlodarczyk-big-ups-1

Big Ups sent the crowd into a frenzy from start to finish. Crowd surfers, held aloft on a sea of hands, pumped their fists. Frontman Joe Galarraga sprawled on the floor, tearing at his shirt, howling into the mic. Isn’t New York talked about, in lesser cities, as a place where crowds have been there, done that, don’t give a damn? Well, maybe not enough bands are asking us to pay attention. Big Ups, for their part, aren’t asking.

This show was punk rock at its elemental best, played in the right kind of setting, to the right kind of crowd. Shea Stadium feels like a safe space for shirt-ripping, lung-tearing pandemonium, and that’s what we got, the intimate space flung into chaos as Galarraga and his bandmates powered through songs from their killer new release Eighteen Hours of Static. Begun a few years ago when the band members were seniors in college, the Big Ups of today plays like the veteran outfit they are. What’s on offer isn’t just three-chord punk played loud; Brendan Finn, Amar Lal, Carlos Salguero Jr. and Galarraga deliver plenty of volume, but it’s the force with which they deliver it that sets them apart. They hit like a punch to the gut.

This set was recorded in full digital multitrack provided by the Shea Stadium team, combined with a pair of my audience mics. We’d encourage you to check out their site for their own version of this show (coming soon) as well as a previous Big Ups show and those of hundreds of other bands.

Big Ups will be playing this Monday, March 3 at Baby’s All Right, followed by the traditional tour down to Texas for South By Southwest. Check out the dates here.

Slothrust: February 21, 2014 Shea Stadium – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Slothrust have been kicking around Brooklyn for a while now, and the time they’ve spent gigging has paid off big-time with their latest release, Of Course You Do, a well-crafted slab that belongs on the shelf of any fan of aggressive guitars and soft/loud dynamics and instant-classic melodies. Vocalist/guitarist Leah Wellbaum, bassist Kyle Bann and drummer Will Gorin aren’t just your average rock n’ roll power trio, either — the members come from the jazz and blues scenes, which you might not have picked up on amid the pandemonium of this burner of a record release show at Shea Stadium. Because Slothrust, my friends, can play fucking heavy, and they brought it end-to-end during this fifty minutes at one of New York’s finest DIY venues.

Those nostalgic for a past golden age of guitar sounds, particularly the early 1990s, can be forgiven, I guess, for labeling Slothrust a “grunge band” and leaving it at that. The problem is, that term was fraught from its inception — none of the bands playing the “style” embraced it, and many of those bands didn’t sound much alike. What would be fair to say is that Slothrust’s set gave off the vibe of the best acts of that era (one site even compared them to early Nirvana). They can create community through noise, though their music is more than just that. Wellbaum can be deceptively thoughtful in her lyrics, and after a few listens, you pick up some of the blues streak that you might not have noticed on first go. Seeing this crowd, this band, gave me hope. Label it whatever you want, but there’s a type of heart in this music that you can’t replace with machines and samples. Lots of music can move bodies. I’m not sure all of it can move souls.

We are very pleased to announce that we’ll be covering Slothrust and a hose of other worthy acts at the Northern Spy / Ba Da Bing Records SXSW Showcase in Austin next month. Tiny Mix Tapes will be streaming live, and we will be hosting the recordings for download here. Here’s the press release.

This set was recorded in full digital multitrack in combined with a pair of my audience mics. One unique element of Shea Stadium is that the venue is (officially) a recording studio, so all of the shows there are recorded for streaming on their site. Because the layout of the venue makes our normal recording methods kind of impossible, the Shea team was gracious enough to let us use their digital multitrack files. That made for a recording of outstanding, almost album quality. We’d encourage you to check out their site for their own version of this show (coming soon) as well as previous Slothrust shows and those of hundreds of other bands.

Recordings of the rest of the bill — Big Ups, Low Fat Getting High, and Boytoy — will be available here soon.

Potty Mouth: January 6, 2014 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Potty Mouth may not be as vulgar as their name implies, but they can write a mean fucking hook. Hailing from the indie rock mini-Mecca of Northampton, Mass., the band is touring behind Hell Bent, its first full-length album, brought to you by Old Flame Records. I had no idea what to expect from my first show of the year, given the sub-zero temperatures, but Potty Mouth’s buzz seems to have more than made up for the bad weather. This seven-song, twenty-five minute headlining set told you all you need to know about this band. They showed up, delivered one catchy salvo of feminist pop-punk after another, and called it a night. It was economical, it got it done, it reminded you why you braved the cold.

In particular, I found myself nodding along to “The Spins”, a song about that well-known consequence of too much booze, and equally captivated by the closer “The Better End”, which gives guitarist Phoebe Harris a turn at the vocal mic. Like fellow Northampton residents Speedy Ortiz, among others, Potty Mouth ought to remind those who ditched guitar rock with a purpose for watered-down laptop R&B exactly what they were missing.

I recorded this set with our installed Naiant X-R microphones in the venue, plus a soundboard feed provided by the outstanding head house engineer Josh Thiel. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Eagulls: October 16, 2013 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

December 9, 2013

IMG_6044

The Leeds, UK punks Eagulls aren’t one of your pretty sort of “punk” bands. Having taken a rather bizarre and uncompromising posture from the get-go (they hate “beach bands” and those that incorporate “Afrobeat” among other easy targets), Eagulls bear the burden justifying the attitude in the live setting. Happily, this CMJ New Music Marathon showcase at Glasslands showed off the harder-edged side of the band in a way that suggests they can back the smack talk up. Frontman George Mitchell brings more heat on his own than most entire bands, yowling into the mic like he’s screaming his argument at a long-hated relative in the back of the room. Their short burst of a set wasn’t filled with a lot of conventionally pretty moments, but it made its point. The band has put out an EP on Canadian-based Deranged, a suitable space to share with such acts as Fucked Up and White Lung, but their U.S. full-length comes your way by longtime friends of the site Partisan Records, whose generous eclecticism makes their catalog as unpredictable as it is enjoyable. Look for that release on March 4 here in the U.S. Until then, put these guys on your calendar.

I recorded this set with our usual setup for the venue, with Naiant X-R microphones and a soundboard feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Torres: September 25, 2013 Glasslands – Streaming Full Set

Consider any of the singing competitions that rule TV-land and it’s obvious that there’s no shortage of perfectly good singer-songwriters. Many a loser of The Voice is capable of killing on a few cover songs in a coffee shop. There are dozens and dozens who can hit the right notes and make the right faces and get somebody to vote for them on their phone. What almost all of them don’t have, not really, is what Torres, aka Mackenzie Scott, has. She sings with grit, with feeling, and sometimes it’s not as pretty as it should be or as tied with a neat bow as a fifteen year old on an iPhone might like. When she sings “Honey” you hear the pleading and the hurt, and when her hushed voice grows into a harsh, wailing peak, you feel like you’re right there with her. This one of many good reasons that her self-released album grabbed the attention it did. Torres isn’t just putting a bunch of so-so tracks out there, hoping somebody cares. Her work demands to be heard.

Finding Glasslands pretty busy on a Wednesday night these days is hardly news, but Torres owned the audience in a way many artists can’t. From the leadoff track to her record, “Mother Earth, Father God” to the solemn, solo closer “November Baby,” she held the crowd rapt, the noise of the bar kept at bay through sheer force of will. She doesn’t take her audience for granted, but her set isn’t accommodationist, either. A lesser artist sitting on a single self-released album wouldn’t play multiple songs stretching past the five-minute mark, including her encore, but such is Scott’s confidence and skill that I didn’t even notice the track lengths until I mixed this recording down. Considering this was Scott’s first Brooklyn show as a borough resident (she comes from Nashville), I think she’s more than made the case that she’ll be around a while.

I recorded this set with the installed house sound system including a board feed from Glasslands engineer  Matt. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

At the request of Torres’ management, this recording is offered in streaming format only.

We have been big fans of She Keeps Bees here at NYCTaper for a few years. The duo have appeared on the site a good half-dozen times and we have not been shy with superlatives. The combination of Andy’s precise but aggressive percussion and Jess’s bluesy guitar is the perfect compliment for that voice — Jess’s innate ability to draw out complex and wide range of emotions in each and every song. At Glasslands last week, the band drew an impressive crowd for the dead week pre-Labor Day. The fans were also quite rambunctious as you can hear on this recording. We were encouraged to hear that She Keeps Bees is finishing up recording a new album, and several of those new songs were featured during the set. The band is seeking the right label to distribute the album, and we hope to see it released this Fall. We are streaming “Counter Charm”, which was the band’s 2012 single release.

I recorded this set with our installed rig in this venue and the sound is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Hiss Golden Messenger: August 17, 2013 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

August 20, 2013
By

A man can make complicated music these days in a room alone with a machine. Create a symphony out of bits and bytes, a hit single out of a 4/4 beat and an idea. If you look at what’s celebrated most often in music these days it’s one person transcending the limits of money and time and space and the need for bandmates, usually because of his or her skill with a machine. In case you forgot, men alone have been doing that for decades, centuries, eons. Just the machines were simpler.

Hiss Golden Messenger has more words in its name than regular band members. In the studio the band is MC Taylor, former lead singer of beloved San Francisco band The Court & Spark, and longtime collaborator Scott Hirsch, plus the cream of available guest players. On the road, it’s often Taylor alone.

What started it all — a rough-hewn bit of work called Bad Debt — was nothing more than Taylor banging out songs with a guitar and a tape deck in his kitchen, while his baby slept. If it sounds old-fashioned, way more old-fashioned than some wide-eyed impresario making beats with a MacBook Pro and Ableton, well, that’s because it is. Sometimes the best things are the simplest things, the ones made how we used to before everything got too easy. But to hear the deep feeling and rich meaning that Taylor can put into a song with the tools he has, well, the old way starts to look economical. Take the Bad Debt spirit, add a band and unforced, high-quality production, and you’ve got masterpieces like his two primary releases on North Carolina imprint Paradise of Bachelors Poor Moon and this year’s Haw, which are probably my two favorite records of the past two years.

This night’s show at Glasslands — Taylor’s first New York show in four years — brought us back to the Bad Debt days, with Taylor alone at a guitar in front of a room that, with no disrespect to the night’s headliner Daughn Gibson, seemed to include a lot of folks, myself included, who’d come to see him. We were rewarded again and again. Taylor’s typical set-starting song, “Father Sky” found itself replaced with his version of a traditional song, most recently popularized as “When I Was A Young Girl” by Nina Simone. Two new numbers, possibly to appear on an upcoming EP, showed up for the first time I’ve heard them. “Southern Grammar”, streaming below, was particularly breathtaking, continuing Mike’s ongoing lyrical struggles with faith. On stage sitting down in old jeans, a white tank top and a Caterpillar hat, Mike looked like an anachronism, especially on a Saturday night. He didn’t have much for us to look at, gimmicks to parlay into Twitter excitement or iPhone photos. Hiss Golden Messenger had nothing but music, and words. He sang, and the world went still.

This recording is primarily the soundboard feed of engineer Josh Thiel’s house mix, plus a small amount of the house mics for ambiance. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

The Raleigh, NC band The Love Language just released its third record, Ruby Red, but in some ways it feels like a debut. Frontman Stuart McLamb delivered his first album under this moniker in 2009; the band’s Merge Records debut was a similarly insular affair. Both Ruby Red and the band’s live show represent a vision blown wide open. Two years in the making, the record gave McLamb all the tools he needed to make the pop-driven, big-room-filling style of rock that he was born to make.

This show at Glasslands fulfilled the promise of the record in every way, with one big number after another making the case for a band on its way to the next level. McLamb’s songs manage to toe that narrow line between earnestness and bombast without over delivering either. Ruby Red itself is a high-gloss production that features a cast of twenty musicians, grand flourishes and ear-pleasing micro-details. The live show, with a touring cast of five, felt comparatively stripped down, but it gave the songs the chance to prove themselves. The Love Language came across as a hungry, tightly-rehearsed unit, delivering tracks like the album opener “Calm Down” with a sense of purpose and poise. Taking full advantage of every second they had before the usual 11:30 p.m. switchover to dance music in this venue, the band played homage to a now-classic New York band with The Strokes’ “The Modern Age”. In that context, not to mention the choice of city, covering the last band tasked with “saving” rock felt right. I won’t freight The Love Language or Ruby Red with that baggage, but for those still looking for new rock music that excites them, they’re a find.

I recorded this set with our usual combination in the venue of Naiant X-R microphones and a soundboard feed from house engineer Josh Thiel. As the band’s very loud guitar amps were not run through the board mix, this mix leans more heavily on the audience mics than normal, and is slightly lower in quality than the absolute best of our Glasslands recordings. That said, it’s still more than worth checking out. Enjoy!

The Love Language is currently touring the Southeast, Midwest and West Coast. Click here for tour dates.
