Walking Shapes: May 15, 2013 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

When the opening band has as big or an even bigger crowd than the headliner, it’s often a clue that they’re on their way up. So it went for this Walking Shapes show at Glasslands, where even on the earlier side the club had a packed house — and for a band that didn’t have a single record out. Now, they do — the Brooklyn band released their Mix Tape (Vol. 1) in increments throughout July, and now the full LP is available free from No Shame Records and on their bandcamp page. (It’s also on Spotify as well). The band’s sound on record shares some of the nostalgic glaze that’s made Foxygen such a hit this year, with an equal nod to some of the better moments of the Britpop sound that ruled the mid-90s.

Which is all to say that Walking Shapes are a very accessible band; this is music for the masses, nothing obtuse about it. Listen to the big-chorus-driven “Keep”, for example, and imagine how that song could possibly not make it on the radio. For that reason, the band’s live show seemed almost incongruous with the intimate Glasslands setting. As they played song after song of big-tent, bombastic rock, I kept feeling like I ought to be in Terminal 5. Musically tight, well-rehearsed and armed with heart-on-your-sleeve lyrics to go with it, I wouldn’t be shocked to see them get there.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other recording from this night, with a pair of Naiant X-X omnidirectional mics split at the stage lip, our installed Naiant X-R mics in the audience and a soundboard feed by Glasslands engineer Jeremy. Owing to Jeremy’s extremely tight mix plus the additional pair of mics, this is a truly outstanding recording. Enjoy!

Porcelain Raft, aka Mauro Remiddi, has produced a wide range of music in his life, all of which has been distilled to its essence in his current electronic compositions. This short set, billed as a full run-through of his Soundcloud-only EP Silent Speech, veered from that work’s original format into its own grand, live-sequenced creation. With the still-new house soundsystem at Glasslands providing ample reinforcement, this short but sweet set whetter our appetites for Porcelain Raft’s forthcoming Secretly Canadian LP Permanent Signal, which you can preorder via the link below.

I recorded this set with our installed rig in the venue, with Naiant microphones and a soundboard feed from house engineer Josh Thiel. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

A small record label is going to get very lucky in the near future. After she moved to LA and was released from her contract with XL Recordings, Holly Miranda has spent the last couple of years writing, recording and perfecting a new album. At Glasslands on Sunday night, much of the new album material was on display. From the first notes of the opener “Mark My Words” it was very much apparent that Holly is truly “back”, and as she worked through the set with a full band (including horns) I came to the very inescapable conclusion that the new album is the best music she’s ever written. As the new record is shopped to the appropriate label, my guess is that it won’t be long before someone snaps it up. The songs magnify all of Holly’s strengths — her ability to write and perform everything from blues-based rock to sweet love songs, and many styles in between. We’re streaming “The Only One”, a song that I had never heard before but which struck me instantly with its true beauty. We really could have streamed any highlight, because there were many. Holly Miranda will play again in NYC at Rockwood Music Hall on July 17.

We recorded this set with our installed rig (Naiant Cards plus board) and the sound is superb. Enjoy!

VietNam: May 18, 2013 Glasslands – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The conventional description of the music of VietNam is that its 60s-influenced. But given the long hair, long beards, clothing styles, crowded stage of multi-instrumentalists, and melodic back-beat minor-chord based songs, its pretty clear this band is directly descended from the mid-70s post-hippie movement personified mostly by the Rolling Thunder Revue. As with Rolling Thunder, the stage energy is focused primarily on one enigmatic and magnetic presence, in this case its Michael Gerner who last released a VietNam album in 2007. The surprising return of the band is buoyed by the new album A.merican D.ream (Mexican Summer Records) which like its five-year old predecessor, is a strong album of self-described “apocalyptic street blues”. At Glasslands on Saturday last, the band completed a short tour and the hometown show was both a strong finale to the tour and a reintroduction of VietNam as an excellent live band. The setlist was equally distributed among the new album and the older one, and during the hour-long set we became completely convinced that the band does its predecessors proud.

I recorded this set with our installed Naiant cardioid microphones mixed with an excellent board feed provided by Glasslands superb FOH Josh. The sound quality is superb, enjoy!

Doe Paoro: May 14, 2013 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

We first caught Doe Paoro a year ago at Cameo Gallery, and she wowed us with her sincerity and her unique approach to pop music. Taking the stage at Glasslands, nominally as a support act but as the one with the largest crowd by far, Doe Paoro, showed added poise in her live performance and some subtle refinements to her sound. She also had two songs, “See Me Now” and “New Lows”, to share from a new 7″ release. Boasting a completely new look from last year’s more 90s-inspired digs, Sonia (her real name) came across as a more mature but equally strong performer, continuing to meld vocals that draw from a number of singing traditions with arrangements that draw from reggae, R&B, pop and rock. Along with her bouncier numbers like “Born Whole” and “I’ll Go Blind”, Sonia’s ballads shouldn’t be ignored, either. Both “New Lows”, the new song, and “Live Again” were particularly strong. We look forward to seeing what Sonia will do next.

I recorded this set with the installed Glasslands rig, combining the Naiant  X-R cardiod microphones with a soundboard feed by the Glasslands engineer Chris. To minimize distractions during the quieter songs, the recording favors the soundboard feed. Enjoy!

Grandchildren: May 15, 2013 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Show

Grandchildren is hardly the only criminally underrated band out of Philadelphia right now (we’ve written about several of them) but they are one of the most compelling. This band has mastered the art of dense, lushly orchestrated rock music with a modern electronic twist — exactly the kind of current sound that screams for a wider audience. Here at Glasslands to celebrate the release of their third LP, Golden Age, the band showed the maturity, poise and musical prowess we first saw in them back in 2009, this time backed by their strongest and most consistent material of their career. Picking a “highlight track” for this show was almost impossible, as Golden Age serves up one good song after another, and the band has worked hard to make the big arrangements come across live. Songs like “No Way Out” excellently demonstrate the band’s refinement of their sound and their ability to write songs that can appeal across genres and generations of fans.

I recorded this set with Naiant X-X omnidirectional mics at the stage lip, plus the Naiant X-R house mics and a soundboard feed from the night’s hardworking engineer Jeremy. The sound quality is outstanding, and we are so pleased with it we are offering the entire set streaming below in addition to MP3 and FLAC downloads. Enjoy!

The Night Marchers: March 2, 2013 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

March 8, 2013
By

nightmarchers2013-03-02-2

The Night Marchers slam-packed Glasslands last Saturday for a set of straight-ahead raw punk from veterans of the scene.  The band, anchored by guitarist John Reis, who previously led several bands including Rocket From the Crypt, Drive Like Jehu, and Hot Snakes, finds Reis reunited with fellow Hot Snakes personnel Gar Wood and Jason Kourkonis along with bassist Tommy Kitsos. The result is closer to RFTC’s fun-loving rockabilly-tinged raveups than Hot Snakes’ darker fare — Reis is a consummate showman who shows a knack for big rock gestures and isn’t afraid to have fun with his audience, and The Night Marcher’s songs, even on heavier subject matter, come across more as party-ready than angry.  The San Diego band doesn’t get out to the East Coast all that often, having waited five years to follow up 2008’s See You In Magic with this year’s Allez Allez.  As a result, this crowd came ready for a special occasion, and they got one, with a blistering full hour set that spanned both of their records.  Glasslands has a special energy on nights like these, when there isn’t an inch of the place to move and — even in the middle of winter — you begin to think the walls will start sweating.  For their part, The Night Marchers gave us something worth waiting for, with several of the Allez Allez numbers standing out, including “2 Guitars Sing”, “Fisting the Fan Base”, and “(Wasting Away In) Javalinaville”.  Reis even paused the show to sing happy birthday to a fan. Whoever that guy was, this was a birthday he won’t forget.

hi and lo recorded this set with an excellent soundboard feed by the band’s FOH Nikhil “Mckeel” Ranade as well as our house-installed Naiant X-R mics.  The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

The Loom: September 4, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

November 12, 2012

If you read this site regularly, it should be pretty clear by now that we just can’t say enough good things about the Brooklyn band The Loom, who we’ve been fans of for four years now. We continue to watch this band grow, develop and change, evolving and tweaking their sound and taking their music in new directions. What has not changed over those four years is the high quality of this band’s live shows, or their kindness and generosity as performers. This year has found the Loom completing a touring cycle for their first LP, 2011’s Teeth, and charting a course toward finishing their second album, which should be out next year. While the shift is subtle, the band is seeing some evolution in their sound as they approach the new record. Where the Teeth-era material would easily locate the band in the “acoustic indie folk” realm, the band’s newest songs show the influence of some of the heavier bands they have been playing shows with, like The Phantom Family Halo. While The Loom have hardly given themselves over to psych rock, songs like the new “Fire Makes” are drenched in heavier guitar riffs than we have seen from them before. “Morning Song, Mountain Song”, which we first heard back in December, is a more high-octane version of the band’s style from Teeth and “The Reading Room”, perhaps my favorite new track, falls somewhere between the two. Hearing the new material at Glasslands – possibly my personal favorite Brooklyn venue, and also one where new music and new musical directions flourish – seemed appropriate. As long as The Loom continue to put out this kind of effort, they will always be a favorite of ours.

I recorded this set with Naiant X-X microphones split on stage, combined with a soundboard feed from the Glasslands engineer Josh Thiel. The sound is outstanding, even by the standards of our other recordings of this band.  Enjoy!

Death Blues: September 4, 2012 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

September 20, 2012
By

Death Blues is the new project from the hypertalented drummer and percussionist Jon Mueller, who has joined a new cast of players to make some seriously inspired math/post-rock. Mueller’s bio includes work with members of Swans, Wilco, and Bon Iver; helping to found the bands Pele, Collections of Colonies of Bees and Volcano Choir; and work with Rhys Chatham, James Plotkin and many others. The level of output represented by his discography would be humbling to most musicians.

So enter Death Blues and their inaugural NYC show, which took place at Glasslands, possibly the best place in this city for such things. Death Blues incorporates Mueller’s relentless percussion with hammered guitars, a trio of vocalists, an upright bass, and additional percussion. The result is a melodic but gripping live experience, with the throat-singing of the vocalists carrying over Mueller’s polyrhythmic drumming. The nearest guidepost sound-wise here is probably late 80s/early 90s acts like Slint and June of 44, but with less commitment to traditional song structure. This five-song set of mostly-extended numbers (including the 14+ minute centerpiece, “Death Blues”) gave the Glasslands crowd a preview of what this group will be delivering with its forthcoming Hometapes debut, Death Blues. We can’t wait to see what else Mueller has in store.

We saw Death Blues play the Hopscotch Music Festival in Raleigh, North Carolina a few days later, and we hope to have a recording of that set from the person who recorded it available to share as well soon.

I recorded this set with Naiant X-X omnidirectional mics at the lip of the stage, plus a flawless soundboard feed by Josh, the house engineer.  The sound is outstanding, and one of my finest recordings of the year. Enjoy!

Donora video
[still from official Donora video]

On a summer night in Brooklyn there are few places I’d rather be than Glasslands. With their perfectly refrigerated tap and AC cranked to full blast, it’s always an easy decision to come for a night of great music. So when I saw this great indie-pop lineup with Donora headlining, I was excited.

Back in February, I had the pleasure of seeing Donora play in support of Team Genius and was impressed with the work from their 2011 EP, Boyfriends, Girlfriends. This show at Glasslands was a stop on their Friends Forever tour with fellow Pittsburgh band TeamMate and did not disappoint. Donora’s upbeat set featured many of the songs from the EP plus a brand new track Under the Lights, which made the packed crowd dust off their dancing shoes.

This recording was made with a pair of Schoeps MK5 microphones positioned in our usual spot, along with a soundboard feed. We are really excited about Glasslands’ recently upgraded soundboard, and this was the very first night with the new equipment. House engineer Jeremy absolutely nailed both the live mix and soundboard feed. The recording is an even balance between the two sources and sounds excellent. Enjoy!
