Hallelujah the Hills: June 23, 2012 Rock Shop – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Among my favorite albums from this spring is Hallelujah the Hills’ most recent release No One Knows What Happens Next and I was delighted to see they were making a stop at Brooklyn’s Rock Shop on their current tour. It’s hard to pinpoint the Hills’ sound, which ranges from easy-going, sophisticated folk to a powerful rock groove. The far reaches of their musicianship has made their recent release one of my favorite albums to listen to, particularly on the walk to work while I prepare for the day ahead, so I was really looking forward to this Saturday night performance at a great Brooklyn venue.

For fifty minutes, the band filled the small stage and played a balanced set of songs between their new album and the 2007 album Collective Psychosis Begone. Leading with their self-titled song, they quickly featured group vocals and revisited this theme on a personal favorite “The Crux of the Cameraman”. Obviously, the talents of band members Brian Rutledge on horns and David Bentley on cello are a highlight and make a delicate song like “Care to Collapse” or “Hungry Ghost Extraordinaire” among the most memorable and recognizable songs, both from the album and live. The band, along with the soothing vocals of singer Ryan Walsh, certainly made the most of the venue’s intimate settings and left me with that same great feeling I get on my morning walk.

I recorded the band using a pair of Schoeps MK 5 Cardioid microphones from the audience and a soundboard feed from the house engineer to wish I’d like to send a special thanks. This was his last night, as mentioned by the band in the recording, and we wish him all the best. Rock Shop has always been a terrific venue for us because it always sounds so good. The Spinto Band: May 24, 2012 Rock Shop – FLAC/MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

We recorded The Spinto Band last month who are fresh off the May 1 release of their self-produced album Shy Pursuit. This was the last night of a four night residency for the Delaware band and they showed a remarkable range of sounds including heavy guitar solos, steady synthesizers, and an army of kazoos. For fifty minutes the band played a great set of infectious indie-folk with most of the songs coming from their new album Shy Pursuit and from 2005’s Nice and Nicely Done.

The band choose an excellent venue in Rock Shop, one of Brooklyn’s absolute best sounding venues, and I was lucky enough to get to record this show using a pair of Schoeps cardioid microphones and a soundboard feed graciously provided by the house engineer. I had a bit of an issue with my preamp and the audience recording, but the final mix turned out to a be a very nice capture of the final night of their residency. We hope you enjoy!

Superhuman Happiness: January 28, 2012 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

It’s one thing to be unaware of an amazing live act for far too long; it’s another for them to be from your own backyard and to be totally clueless about them until they’re opening for an established band at Bowery Ballroom.  But such is the truth of my discovery of Brooklyn’s Superhuman Happiness, and I’m happy to say I’m glad I made my way to them eventually, even if I arrived late to the party.

Like the band they were opening for, Superhuman Happiness utilize a large crew of players that includes multiple percussionists and brass flourishes (founder Stuart Bogie also does time as saxophonist for Antibalas).  Superhuman Happiness specialize in an upbeat, tribal style of dance music that calls to mind acts like !!!, with a penchant for the type of catchy polyrhythms that could as easily be at home on a DFA release (especially the set opener, “See Me On My Way”).  The band’s vocal approach trends mellower than those acts, and less self-referential; Superhuman Happiness, as the name may imply, are an unironically happy band, and being in their crowd, it’s hard not to feel a lightness in your step yourself.  They encourage the crowd to open a number of songs with clapping (check out “Our Favorite Part”, below), amping up the sense of celebration.

I’m told that this set was a bit less on the improvisational side for a Superhuman Happiness gig, given the limited set time, but the band nevertheless took plenty of liberties with song structure, as on the extended meditation during “Hounds”.   But with a musical pedigree among the bandmembers as diverse as Foals, TV on the Radio, Phenomenal Handclap Band, the Roots, Passion Pit, Antibalas and Holly Miranda, to name a few, these guys prove that they aren’t just a bunch of music majors noodling it out – they’ve got plenty of chops in more straight-ahead styles as well.

Right now, you can catch Superhuman Happiness at less expensive (as they commented from stage) venues around the city like Union Pool and Pianos; sure, they’ll also dominate Brooklyn Bowl one day (their sound is almost tailor-made for that venue), but why wait?

I recorded this set with a combination of Schoeps MK22 “open cardioid” mics and MK41 supercardiod mics for a recording of excellent focus and balance.  Enjoy!

Montreal band Stars has long been one of my favorites. I first saw them at the now defunct Siren Festival of 2006, against the beautiful scenic backdrop that is Coney Island, and was blown away by their unique blend of pop and rock. Even though they now claim Montreal as their hometown, the band has deep NYC roots, having written their first song and several albums while living in a small West Side Apartment in the late ’90s, so it’s no surprise that they consistently return to their home away from home in the Big Apple.

We had the good fortune of seeing Stars at Music Hall of Williamsburg for a performance that was nothing short of outstanding. Their performance featured two never before played songs, To the Better Ones and Holes, offering up a moment of vulnerability, but also demonstrating their trust and connection with the audience.

Lead singer Torquil Campbell was also able to connect with the audience in a slightly different way, showing his jovial mood by kindly requesting that an audience member “pass the spliff” before playing the aforementioned To the Better Ones. Between moments like this and personal commentary about the heroes of Occupy Wall Street, it was clear that spirits were high and a genuine love for New York existed on this beautiful Brooklyn night.

I recorded this set using a pair of Schoeps MK41 hypercardioid microphones clamped to the center balcony railing. The samples I have chosen include Set Yourself on Fire, the self-titled track from their 2004 album, and my personal favorite Elevator Love Letter, a fitting tribute to our metropolis.

My Morning Jacket took their impressive stage show to Madison Square Garden last night,  demonstrating again how a band that works hard, plays tight and writes compelling songs can achieve large-scale success without much in the way of conventional marketing.  It had been a while since I last saw MMJ- I think my last check-in with them was some time in the last decade at Irving Plaza.  Since then they’ve gone from a mid-tier band straddling the indie and jam-band divide to a full-fledged juggernaut, a latter-day Phish for the less-tie-dyed set.  It’s easy to see how this band can both inspire the more jam-band-focused taper community as well as garner positive notice from sites like Pitchfork.  While we are the only folks recording at most shows we attend, this night there were several other crews in attendance.  It’s not hard to understand why – with sprawling solos, complex arrangements, and quiet solo moments, MMJ shows practically cry out for being recorded.  If you’re going to be an arena band, you have to embrace it, and MMJ delivers a large-scale rock n’ roll party, with a light show that could hold its own with any band in America.  The folks in the seats stood throughout the set, while the massive open floor was packed with hand-waving fans. The two-and-a-half hour set boasted many of the band’s big numbers, including a smoking “Mahgeetah”.  The show closed with some true holiday cheer in the form of a faithful rendition of the Bing Crosby classic, “I’ll Be Home for Christmas”.  The members of MMJ are no doubt looking forward to being home for Christmas themselves, as this show marked the end of their current tour.

I recorded this set in the raised seated section behind the soundboard area, in the center, with the Schoeps supercardiod microphones to reject unwanted sound.  While not as good as the recordings we feature from smaller venues, it is a fine capture of the evening.  Enjoy!
