The physical copies of Julia Weldon’s new CD Light is a Ghost arrived in her manager/brother’s office on the afternoon of her CD release show last Friday. This serendipitous bit of fortune carried over into the celebratory feeling of her show at the Knitting Factory that night and also allowed us to snag a copy for multiple plays over the weekend. The CD is really everything we could have hoped for from this tremendous artist. The material is well-paced and highlights her many talents — strong voice, deep sense of melody, insightful lyrics and a keen sense of humor. Whether its this CD or her next, Julia Weldon is an artist destined for big things, and we are fortunate to be able to hitch onto her ride early on. The show at the Knit was also a family affair. Besides her brother (and manager), both of Julia’s parents (thanks on the CD) were there for support. In her bio, Julia notes that she came out at 12, and while we’re not privy (nor should we be) to the details of her parent’s reaction, its safe these days to assume that they are completely supportive. This is perhaps why her music is almost “post-gay”, that is to say that her songs don’t focus or even really touch on the struggle with phobias and acceptance. The lyrics treat her sexuality unselfconsciously and as a matter-of-fact — and that’s both empowering and refreshing. At the Knit, Julia and her band worked through the complete album, with a bonus song as encore. We are streaming “Icarus”, which was perhaps the most fully realized performance on a night when each number shined throughout.

Julia Weldon is touring for a half dozen dates in the South and Midwest before returning to NYC in September.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mixed with an excellent board feed from house soundman Rob, and the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Gary Clark Jr.: June 8, 2013 Mountain Jam IX – Flac/MP3/Streaming

It must get tiresome for black guitarists to be tagged as the “next Hendrix” with predictable regularity. Gary Clark Jr. is just the latest to receive this impossible and ridiculous comparison, including from the New York Times of all places. At best, the Hendrix comparison trotted out for every black rock guitarist is simply lazy, and at worst its subtlely racist. I suspect that a performer with the intelligence and grace exhibited by Gary Clark Jr. must sigh at the silliness of the tag, but also find it somewhat humorous at this point. We caught his excellent set on Saturday of Mountain Jam last month and the tongue in cheek acknowledgment of the comparison was a terrific run through Hendrix’s “Third Stone from the Sun” both as the intro and outro of Clark’s own “If You Love Me Like You Say”. In the seventy-five minute set, Gary Clark Jr. exhibited both the guitar chops and strong vocals that have earned him an enormous amount of authentic praise lately, too. He was selected to play at Eric Clapton’s 2013 Crossroads Festival, he performed with the Rolling Stones this Summer, and he even played at the White House for a Command Performace. When he next returns to the NYC area, it will be for a headline gig at the cavernous Terminal 5.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Govt Mule set from later in the day, and the sound is equally good. Enjoy!

Chuck Johnson: May 26, 2013 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

After getting a preview of what was to come last year at Hopscotch Music Festival, we expected Chuck Johnson‘s 2013 record Crows In the Basilica to be an important part of the conversation on best guitar records of the year. That was confirmed both by Basilica’s release on Three Lobed Recordings this spring, as well as by this performance at Mercury Lounge, where Chuck demonstrated that the subtle brilliance of his compositions can’t be contained by the studio.

Chuck and his contemporaries are almost always categorized by the label “American Primitive”, a sub genre of guitar playing shared with its progenitor John Fahey and many other worthy players, but the term “primitive” as understood by most is misleading. Rather than suggesting a simplicity or naïveté to the material, American Primitive is best understood as a recognition of the ability of these players to use highly complex guitar arrangements that link the instrument’s present with its more elemental, folk-derived origins. Before venturing out as a solo player, Johnson played in well-regarded North Carolina bands like Shark Quest and the string trio Idyll Swords, but it is here where Johnson’s skill on guitar is best appreciated. We hope you will enjoy this moving set of music from Johnson and be on the lookout for his future shows.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones from our usual spot in the venue, plus a soundboard feed provided by Mercury team. Given that it is a recording of a single instrument, the recording heavily favors the soundboard feed, with a bit of audience mics mixed in to give a feel of the room. It is an excellent recording. Enjoy!

Trapper Schoepp and The Shades: June 27, 2013 Brooklyn Bowl – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Trapper Schoepp - Vernon Webb

Trapper Schoepp and The Shades is the kind of band that you see and immediately know that they are going places. At Brooklyn Bowl a couple of weeks back, they opened the first night of the Old 97s three-peat and immediately grabbed the attention of the incoming crowd. Trapper and the band hail from Wisconsin, but their music is pure Americana as comfortable in the Midwest, the South or even NYC. Their album Run, Engine, Run was released last Fall, and the setlist consisted of primarily tracks from the album, but also a couple of strong new songs. Trapper and his bandmates have a natural ease and a positive vibe on stage and their talents are obvious. Like many of today’s bigger Americana bands, if they are willing to be road warriors, in the coming years the crowds and the venues will continue to grow. Trapper Schoepp and The Shades will be playing mostly midwest dates this Summer, but when they come East again we’ll be there.

I recorded this same in the same manner as the Old 97s show and the sound quality is equally superb. Enjoy!

Deer Tick: June 7, 2013 Mountain Jam IX – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Back in December, we caught Deer Tick twice at Brooklyn Bowl play complete albums in a look back on their outstanding career thus far. But 2013 is a year to look forward, as Deer Tick has completed a new album Negativity to be released in September. On the current tour, the band is playing quite a few new songs and we caught them early on playing a full sized set at Mountain Jam. Deer Tick played on Friday afternoon, late enough for a large crowd to join them on the Mountain even though most of their set was performed in the pouring rain. The main set mixed old and new in a well-paced show before the band thought their time had expired. Fortunately for us, the Festival allowed Deer Tick to play a couple of more songs — including an inspired Replacements cover that we are streaming below.

I recorded this set near the front of the soundboard area with the Neumann 102 cards underneath a sturdy umbrella. The sound has some issues related to the weather (raindrops on the umbrella, some phasing from the wind), but considering the circumstances we are very pleased with excellent sound of this recording. Enjoy!

Holy Wave: April 23, 2013 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Austin band Holy Wave didn’t shy from the task of warming up the Music Hall of Williamsburg crowd last month before GOAT’s epic performance (that one here). Rocking a dense, intricate psychedelic style reminiscent of bands like The Black Angels and the Brian Jonestown Massacre, the band played material from their current release, Evil Hits (a combination of their The Evil Has Landed and Knife Hits EPs) plus new material that we hope will see the light of day soon. Set against the backdrop of swirling live light projections, the band gave us a taste of what they had in store for the Austin Psych Fest, which they played later that week, and gave us an appropriate intro to the wild GOAT set that was to follow.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the GOAT recording, with MBHO microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Old 97s: June 27, 2013 Brooklyn Bowl – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Old 97s Vernon Webb

In March, we reconnected with the Old 97s at their highly enjoyable set at the Capital Theatre in Portchester. So I guess it was only natural that we would attend their next NYC show, this time as a play-a-full-album three night run at Brooklyn Bowl — one of our old favorites at one of our current favorite venues. The first night album was appropriately the band’s first album Hitchhike to Rhome played from start to finish, including a bonus track, a hidden track, and even an outtake from the album’s sessions. At the conclusion of Rhome, the Old 97s played another dozen tracks, making this both an lengthy and highly entertaining set. The band’s performance was both inspired and tight — clearly a band comfortable with their past and their present.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser MKH-8040 cards pointed at the right stack midway on the right side of the floor. The ambient noise (bowling and chatter) is greatly reduced with the addition of a board feed, synced in at about 40% of the overall mix. The result is a superb recording. Enjoy!

Yo La Tengo: June 22, 2013 Solid Sound Festival (North Adams, MA) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Song

There’s not a ton more I can add about Yo La Tengo that hasn’t been said about them on this site already and recently, at that. Suffice it to say, they are a classic band who have only continued to grow and evolve with time, and any opportunity to see YLT is one worth taking. The band has been on an intense tour schedule for most of this year behind their latest, Fade, but they still sound as fresh as they did debuting the new material back in December at Maxwell’s. This one-hour set at the Solid Sound Festival is an abridged version of a full YLT show, but YLT still packed in a variety of great material, including the excellent combination of “Ohm” and “Blue Line Swinger” to close out the night. They will be hitting a number of other festivals and various shows in North America, the UK and Japan this summer, and we‘d recommend you not miss them if they’re in your city.

Site contributor Kubacheck recorded this set with MBHO cardiod microphones from near the soundboard. While the large room and the distance from the band were not ideal, the sound quality of the recording is nonetheless quite good. Enjoy!

Deafheaven: July 2, 2013 Saint Vitus – Flac/MP3/Streaming

July 5, 2013
By

deafheaven unartig
[screen capture from unARTigNYC video]

Deafheaven’s new album Sunbather is a game-changer in so many ways. Its been called “a modern classic” and a “pinnacle of American black metal” by preeminent metal writer Brandon Stosuy. The album’s universal critical acclaim and the increased crowds that will inevitably gather for the band’s uber-intense live shows mean ultimately that Deafheaven is on a very steep trajectory to the apex of its genre. There will not be (m)any more nights like Tuesday at Saint Vitus, where the packed crowd saw the band deliver a show for the ages. Opening with a quiet guitar introduction, the band then crashed into Sunbather’s first track “Dream House”, and the level of energy did not subside until the band and the audience came up for a breath of air before the final song. One of Deafheaven’s strengths is their ability to seamlessly transition from one apparent genre to another. We are streaming “The Pecan Tree” which encapsulates this ability multiple times within one track. The song opens with a dead start directly into a “screamo” black metal segment before evolving mid-track into a melodic post-rock guitar passage and then concludes in full Deafheaven mode while vocalist George Clarke belts out what is perhaps the darkest lyrics of the entire album “I am no one. I cannot love. It’s in my blood.” Deafheaven’s current tour concludes with two shows in the Midwest — Cleveland on Friday and Chicago on Saturday. If you live in one of those two cities, we recommend that you not miss this band.

I recorded this show with the Sennheiser cardioids set up in the rear of the room and mixed it with a board feed. The strengths of both sources compliment each other and the result is an excellent recording. Enjoy!

Kevin Devine is such a nice guy that its hard for me to believe that he was once in a band that broke up. The Miracle of 86 was a popular Staten Island based power pop quartet who toured and recorded from 1998 to 2003, before Kevin launched his solo career. Following the tragic events of the superstorm and the massive damage to their home borough, the band reunited on Staten Island for a benefit concert in January. The experience was so positive that Miracle of 86 decided to keep it going — with two shows in June. We attended the Maxwells date a couple of weeks back, and it was a show that felt very much like a bunch of old friends getting together to play some songs. The stage banter was friendly and funny and the performance of the old material was both inspired and surprisingly tight. We’re streaming “Sunday School”, which was so well played that it could be released tomorrow. Miracle of 86 could very well play more reunion shows, but for now Kevin will be concentrating, after his hugely successful Kickstarter (for two albums!) on his solo career. Expect a show in NYC in late summer / early fall.

I recorded this show in our usual manner in this venue and the sound is superb. Enjoy!
