Kevin Devine: August 23, 2018 Industry City Brooklyn

There was a guy in the crowd at the Kevin Devine show at Industry City on Friday who was wearing a “STILL EMO” t-shirt. If by “Emo” we mean an artist who writes candidly about politics, chemical abuse, interpersonal struggles and triumphs, and love, then yeah I guess Devine’s music is technically “Emo”. But as we’ve witnessed in following this superb artist and person for a decade, Kevin Devine is a uniquely honest and passionate performer who makes his audience believe, and rightfully so, that’s he in it with us.

Industry City is essentially a series of re-purposed factories that now house a complex of shops, restaurants, bars, retail stores and offices. In the center is a huge courtyard where Bell House has chosen to host its first annual Summer concert series. This was our first visit to Industry City and we were quite impressed. The setting provided a relaxed vibe and pleasant surroundings for enjoying an early evening Summer concert from one of our favorite artists.

Kevin Devine was joined by two members of the Goddamn Band for this show and the three were in sync all night. Devine released his 9th and most recent studio album Instigator in 2016, but on this night he chose democratically from his deep catalog to provide a lengthy set of material that both opened and closed with Kevin playing intense solo numbers, the apt “Brooklyn Boy” to open and personal favorite “Ballgame” to close. As per usual, there was ample banter with the crowd including multiple references to this being the closest the artist has ever played to his home in Sunset Park. Perhaps buoyed by the surroundings or the fact that there hasn’t been a full Goddamn Band show in New York for quite some time, the trio delivered a memorable night of music that clearly made the fans wish for more of these perfect nights.

I recorded this set with the outdoor-friendly Neumann large diaphragm cards mounted at the soundboard. While the audio was not enhanced by the stage being in-between two large brick buildings, the excellent FOH work by Rob certainly made the “room” work well. The mics were mixed with a well-balanced feed to create an excellent mix and the result is a superb recording. Enjoy!

Gunn-Truscinski Duo: July 19, 2018 Elsewhere

Watching the interplay of Steve Gunn and John Truscinski onstage, you get the sense that these two are hand-in-glove players, to the point you almost can’t imagine them playing with anyone else (though they do). That interplay is part of what makes all of their Three Lobed releases so special. Each of them, including their latest and most adventurous to date, Bay Head, feels like it sprung forth fully-formed, a jam session whose synchrony had to be made permanent. On this night at Elsewhere, after kicking off with their new drone track “Road Bells,” the duo launched into straight into a version of “Banh Mi Ringtones” that felt like just that, with the action peaking in a furious Gunn solo. The Ocean Parkway love continued with that title track, followed by the gorgeous “Seagull for Chuck Berry.” Things came to a close in a similar vein to the show we saw at Union Pool in January, the sprawler “Gunter,” featuring a new drone-based intro. Even that relatively new track felt re-imagined in the moment, and that’s the glory of Gunn-Truscinski duo. Fortunately, this is one of those jam sessions whose synchrony was documented.

I recorded this set from the soundboard cage with a board feed from house engineer Chris, together with Schoeps MK4V microphones. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Pylon Reenactment Society: July 1, 2018 Mercury Lounge

Pylon’s influence on their contemporaries is indisputable. Indeed, over the years REM has consistently cited Pylon for their positive impact on the 1980s Athens scene. What’s become more clear in the intervening years is that Pylon’s influence is more vast than their local time and place — their revolutionary sound can be heard in new bands even today. Pylon was enjoying a bit of a renaissance in their third reunion period of 2007-2008 when tragically guitarist Randy Bewley suffered a heart attack and passed away at the age of 53. At that point, the band was formally retired and it seemed as if Pylon’s music would only live on in recordings.

After a few one-off local performances, in 2014 lead singer Vanessa Briscoe Hay re-formed the band under the moniker Pylon Reenactment Society. With the blessing of her two former bandmates Michael Lachowski and Curtis Crowe, Vanessa compiled a group of performers from the Athens scene who were both intimately familiar with the music and personally known to the band. Guitarist Jason NeSmith and bassist Kay Stanton were not only members of Athens mainstays Casper & the Cookies, but were also bandmates with Vanessa in Supercluster. Drummer Joe Rowe was a founding member of Athens greats the Glands, who suffered their own deep loss with the 2016 death of leader Ross Shapiro. Vanessa also added a new touch with this new configuration, as her friend and University of Georgia music professor Damon Denton fortifies the sound of PRS with skillful keyboards. So with friendship, familiarity, and a common ethos, its easily understandable that Pylon Reenactment Society has generated universally positive reviews as both an tribute and a celebration of Pylon, and a contemporary band with its own story to write.

Pylon Reenactment Society doesn’t come North very often, but we were fortunate to catch this month’s appearance at Mercury Lounge, a venue where I captured the original band in 2007. With a full crowd there to party, PRS brought the goods — an animated set of old Pylon classics and two new numbers all performed with the precision the songs require but this a new touch from a different skilled set of performers, all fronted by the inimitable Vanessa Briscoe Hay. The set began with “Driving School” and “Volume” from the first Pylon record, 1980’s Gyrate. Indeed, the show would include almost all of the first album and the entirety of Side A of the band’s second album Chomp. The set even included uber-rare b-side “Altitude”, a song with which we were unfamiliar until the fantastic release in 2016 of Pylon Live (Chunklet). With a twenty-song, ninety-minute set, Pylon Reenactment Society gave the crowd of old and newer fans all that could have been asked for — a chance to relive the old classic material in a new configuration with plenty of heart. We hope they’ll be back North again soon.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards set up next to the soundboard and mixed with an excellent feed and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard: June 16, 2018 Brooklyn Steel

One of the most advantageous aspects of our involvement in this site is our access and exposure to the world class music at a time before those bands hit it big. When it comes to King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, we were there at Day One of their time in the US, including seeing their first U.S. show at McCarren Park, a series of shows at Baby’s All Right, a semi-private Halloween party in a loft, their first show at Bowery Ballroom, and the “secret show” at Baby’s later that week. The three King Gizzard shows we saw in 2015 corresponded to the new music that would eventually become their major label debut and breakthrough album, 2016’s Nonagon Infinity (ATO Records). But it was in 2017 when The Gizz took their career to the next level, accomplishing a feat that will likely never be repeated — the release of five quality albums in one calendar year.

Its been two years since I last saw them in NYC and while much has changed, King Gizzard are still very much the same band. Although it wasn’t Baby’s, the three sold out shows at Brooklyn Steel were very much fan-friendly affairs with the band playing a very democratic selection of material. The show we recorded was the middle night of the three and fortunately for us contained an homage to the “old days”, a long “Head On / Pill” segue that contained long bits of three older numbers and a few other teases. We’d like to think it was the Gizz’s acknowledgement of how important those early days in New York were for the band’s career, days we captured here and remember well.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards set up inside the soundboard cage and mixed with a superbly mixed and well balanced soundboard feed. The resulting blend yielded another superb recording from this excellent sounding room. Enjoy!

Deer Tick: June 9, 2018 The Junction Long Beach NY – Brull Foundation Benefit

The Tommy Brull Foundation and Deer Tick have grown together over the years since the band’s appearance at the Foundation’s first fundraising concert under the “Shine A Light” moniker in 2011. The Brull Foundation has more than a decade long record of providing funding and leadership for a variety of inspired causes, all motivated by the work of the late Tommy Brull, who dedicated so many of his days to working with the disabled at Camp Anchor in Lido Beach. Last weekend’s event was organized to fund a special needs playground in Rockville Centre and the concert having sold out well in advance, the Foundation again achieved its goal. So that by the date of the show, it was time to celebrate.

Deer Tick themselves also have a decade’s worth of work under their belts. And with time, the band itself has changed in personnel and approach, including the recent departure of keyboardist Robert Crowell. While the quartet still enjoys a good time, Deer Tick’s most recent double album release (Deer Tick Vol 1 and Vol 2) represents the most contemplative material of its catalog with issues such as sobriety, marriage, and fatherhood elevating the focus of the band’s lyrics. And not surprisingly given the surnames of all four members of the band, Deer Tick seems to have rediscovered its Irish roots, which on this night included a Pogues cover and a traditional Irish reel in the closing segment of Ian O’Neill’s “Hope Is Big”. We were also fortunate to hear John McCauley jamming on “Dirty Old Town” on the mandolin backstage before the show. The show however was all inclusive, and the setlist was a fine retrospective of the band’s entire career including four numbers from as far back as 2007’s War Elephant and moving forward to a good half dozen tracks from Vol 1 and Vol 2. In between there were interactions with the exuberant crowd, interplay between the band members, acknowledgements of the Brulls, and a lengthy and well-performed classic Deer Tick show. All things considered, this night may have been the ultimate performance of Deer Tick’s four Brull shows, and the good news is that its almost certainly not the last pairing of these two excellent groups of people.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards set up at the stage lip and mixed with a soundboard feed. The sound quality combines the liveliness of the sound at the stage fortified by instrumentation and vocals in the board feed. The final result is a superb recording. Enjoy!

Alejandro Escovedo and Richard Barone: May 23, 2018 Berlin NYC

Alejandro Escovedo is in the midst of a five-week NYC residency that has featured as guests some of the most renowned musicians in the history of New York music, including Sylvain Sylvain, Lenny Kaye, and Richard Barone. The residency was the brainchild of Escovedo, Jesse Malin, and Diane Gentile, and is a celebration of Alejandro’s long-time connection to NYC (with The Nuns he moved here in 1978), but is also a tribute to musical heroes Lou Reed and David Bowie, and is also in support of his latest album, the outstanding Burn Something Beautiful. We chose to capture the night at Malin’s club Berlin NYC with Richard Barone, a long-time favorite of this site. Oh, and what a show it was. Alejandro was as ever a gracious host, and the two headliners basically shared the lead microphone throughout the night, alternating between Escovedo material, Barone material, and a selection of classic covers of Velvet Underground and David Bowie. There were also heartfelt tributes, crowd interaction, and a guest spot from Barone’s partner in the Bongos James Mastro. Interestingly, the set also featured two songs from the great lost classic, the Barone/Mastro duo album Nuts & Bolts. Through it all, the old punks in the crowd were boisterous in their support (with a few over-served unfortunately) and the performers reflected back the love and support. Alejandro Escovedo has one show left in this residency, May 30 at Bowery Electric, attendance much recommended.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted to the back left of the soundboard booth, which is only about 15 feet from the stage in this intimate venue. The mics are mixed with an excellent feed from house sound tech Mike, and the resulting mix is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Animal Flag: April 27, 2018 Trans-Pecos

This night from a couple of weeks ago at Trans-Pecos was Animal Flag’s local release show for their excellent album Void Ripper. This release represents a full two years of work since the Boston band’s last album and also saw a change in the band. No longer the solo project of singer/guitarist Matthew Politoski, Animal Flag is now a band with regular members. The familiarity with the material and with each other gave the band a tight and inspired approach to the music. The band worked straight through the new album (sans one track) before being called back and performing an encore. This well-attended and musically strong show created a really nice night for the band, fans, and venue and we expect it won’t be long before Animal Flag returns to Pecos. Animal Flag has a bunch of tour dates this Summer, including a show on cruise in NYC in August.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps at the stage lip mixed with a fine feed from the soundboard mixed by talented FOH Denim Casimir. The resulting blend captures the strengths of both feeds and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Ryley Walker: April 29, 2018 The Bowery Ballroom

Ryley Walker arrived on The Bowery Ballroom stage as the opening act. For many bands, the opening 45 minutes means an opportunity to deliver a tight-but-denuded set that gives the untutored fan a reason to seek more. Well, Ryley and this night’s crack band — longtime compatriot Ryan Jewell, fellow guitarist Bill MacKay, and Calexico (the headliner) bassist Scott Colberg — did the latter but not the former. Which is to say, their version of a “short” set consisted of four songs, but one of them was 18 minutes long. And instead of “the hits,” as it were, those four were, save one, all tracks from his forthcoming album, Deafman Glance, which promises to extend Walker’s renown as a musician’s musician, who follows his instincts where they take him and isn’t afraid to challenge the listener.

If for years the understanding among Walker and his fans is that there’s about as little relationship between the reasonably straightforward sound of his records and his expansive, jazz-influenced live shows as there is between the seriousness of Walker’s music and the lightheartedness of his stage banter, the Deafman Glance material seems poised to narrow that gap. The proggy, dense, album sound carries over well into Walker’s chosen live milieu, making (for example) the “Telluride Speed” that closed this set a thrill but, unlike the eighteen-minute “Halfwit In Me” that opened it, not a totally radical departure from the album version.

Ryley’s stated goal was for Deafman Glance to be his anti-folk record, and indeed, this felt like the least folk-driven Ryley Walker show I’ve seen. With his vocals turned relatively low in the mix, and a song selection that was relatively short on opportunities for vocal pyrotechnics, Walker seemed intent on letting his electric guitar guide his sound (listen to that “Halfwit in Me” – it did). Walker’s full-band shows have always de-prioritized vocals to some degree in favor of extended jamming, but if I hadn’t seen Walker before and someone told me this was a guy who also does a mean cover of Van Morrison, I’m not sure I’d have believed them. That’s one of the joys of seeing this artist — by the time I see him again (expect a headlining tour in the U.S. in the fall), he’ll almost surely have evolved yet again.

I recorded this set with a beautiful stereo soundboard feed and Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Wet Tuna: December 10, 2017 Trans-Pecos

What’s better than an early Sunday evening kickin’ it with the deep space musings of Matt “MV” Valentine? How about Matt plus PG Six, aka Pat Gubler, who’ve been touring (and are about to put out a record) together as Wet Tuna? The pair of guitarists (plus some pre-recorded beats) were in NYC for a pair of shows, the first night (recorded) at Brooklyn’s Ceremony, the second this jaunt at the revitalized Trans-Pecos.

Given that the night kicked off with a DJ set from WFMU’s DJ Jeff Conklin, whose beloved Avant Ghetto show is a must-listen for fans of this kind of music, it felt appropriate for the Tuna to launch with “I Know You Rider,” the traditional blues song popularized by the Grateful Dead. From there, we got two more sick covers – Michael Hurley’s “Water Train” followed by Incredible String Band’s “Empty Pocket Blues,” which flowed into the Livin’ the Die track “New York Street.” Along with this performance with the Tuna, we’ve also caught Matt on some recent solo outings — so stay tuned for that as well.

This set was recorded directly from the Trans-Pecos soundboard. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Desertion Trio: February 2, 2018 Trans-Pecos

Desertion Trio joined us at newly-licensed Trans-Pecos this past Friday to celebrate the release of their new album, Midtown Tilt, having done the same in their hometown of Philadelphia the night before. The album picks up in many ways where their excellent 2016 effort, Desertion, left off, oscillating between focused riffage and freeform jazz improv. This set showed off not only bandleader Nick Millevoi’s ample guitar skills, but gave broad berth to guest keyboardist Jamie Saft, who appears on both of the band’s albums, adding tremendous depth in the process. Of course, the focus of this one-hour sessions was on Midtown Tilt, including an outstanding rendition of “Jai Alai Noon” that gave Saft ample room to run., while set closer “Numbers Maker” coalesced into an extended freakout before tapering off into its final minutes. For those of us who’d seen the band before, there was much to love about this version of “Desertion and Arsonist’s Match,” which departed from earlier, Saft-less renditions we’ve featured but kept the song’s essential nature as a palette for extended interaction. As we’ve pointed out before, all of these fine musicians contribute to the music world in so many ways, so it is a special pleasure to see them come together here in New York. I recorded this set with Schoeps MK22 microphones at the stage lip, together with a soundboard feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!
