Drive By Truckers: March 15, 2013 Capitol Theatre Portchester – Flac/MP3/Streaming

A Drive By Truckers concert can be an exhausting and exhilarating experience. The show is jam-packed with superb material — songs filled with emotion, humor and expert storytelling. At the Capitol Theatre in Portchester on Friday night, DBT played one of the longest shows we’ve seen in years, not just in time but also in just pure music. The set was almost continuous, no banter, no tuning, no messing around. And at a full two and half hours, twenty seven songs and forty-minute, 9 song encore, it was exhausting. A good portion of the partying weekend crowd did not make it to the end. But for those who stuck it out, it was also a rewarding show. DBT can never be accused of giving anything less than 100% and Friday was no exception. The band was engaging and energetic and the highlights were a plenty. We’re streaming “Let There Be Rock”, which features a mix of all that makes Drive By Truckers great.

I recorded this show in the assigned taping spot in this venue, behind the soundboard and dead center. Although we’d prefer to be about 20 feet further up, this spot does offer decent sound and much of the conveniences of this excellent venue. The recording has some flaws, crowd chatter among them, but overall its a fine listen. Enjoy!

Thermals: March 9, 2013 Maxwell’s – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Thermals Maxwells
[still from this video]

The Thermals signed to Saddle Creek Records in January and in April will release Desperate Ground, their first album in three years. This year also marks the 10th anniversary of the release of their outstanding debut album More Parts per Million. On their current tour, the Thermals are featuring hefty doses of each of the career bookend albums in the setlist. Last night at Maxwell’s, the band delivered an extremely energetic show to a raucous crowd. From the very first drum beat, the front half of the crowd were relentlessly dancing, moshing and reveling in the band’s high-speed performance. The Thermals played twenty-three songs in a little over an hour, almost without coming up for air. The band also showed their appreciation for the rabid fans in other ways. I saw bassist Kathy Foster in the hallway leading the venue taking much time before the show talking to the fans, signing albums, and generally just hanging. Throughout the set, Hutch Harris interacted with the crowd, played off-stage inside the audience, and did a few stage dives. And at the very end of the set, each band member hi-fived the entire front of the crowd and stuck around after the set to socialize. The Thermals are a band who seem to be having an absolute ball playing their music and the positivity is infectious. The band even took time to give a shoutout to the legendary John Agnello, who recorded their new album in New Jersey. The Thermals will play an afternoon set on Monday at the Ace Hotel in Manhattan before heading down to SXSW and then finishing up their tour on the West Coast, dates here.

I recorded this set with the new Neumann TLM 102 large diaphragm cardioids mounted inside the soundboard cage and mixed with a fine feed from veteran Maxwell’s FOH Carson Kopp. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Hilly Eye: February 8, 2013 Music Hall of Williamsburg – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Hilly Eye is the duo of singer/guitarist Amy Klein (formerly of Titus Andronicus) and drummer Catherine Tung. The pair formed back in 2009, but just released their debut record, Reasons to Live, on Don Giovanni Records this year, and they joined their labelmates in the middle of a February blizzard to play their new material at the label showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg. Hilly Eye is the type of act that almost translates better live than on record; the raw immediacy of their raw, slightly shambolic songwriting is naturally appealing on the stage.  Like fellow Don Giovanni labelmates Shellshag (that recording here), Tung and Klein don’t lack for firepower to make their point, even without additional players. The duo deliver songs like “Double Dutch” that tend to be noisy, but not merely for the sake of being so, and are sweetened with a dash of pop sensibility. We’ll call Hilly Eye another win for the Don Giovanni family.

nyctaper and I recorded this set from an optimal spot in the venue using my MBHO cardiod microphones and a perfectly balanced soundboard feed from the house engineer, Jim. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Thanks to Don Giovanni Records for their support and having us at the show.

Waxahatchee, the one-woman project of Katie Crutchfield, hit the scene in low-key fashion in 2012 with a record of lo-fi bedroom gems entitled American Weekend that quietly made it onto several critics’ best-of lists.  The record’s raw production couldn’t mask the obvious talent Crutchfield has for writing accessible, confessional songs punctuated by her unique voice and phrasing.  “Catfish”, on both that record and streaming above, is one of many examples of that, an earworm that also has something to say. American Weekend represented a transitional period for Crutchfield, who had just left she and her sister Allison’s band P.S. EliotShe recorded the record in her parents’ bedroom in Birmingham, Alabama (her hometown).

Its newly-released follow-up, Cerulean Salt, was still recorded at home — this time in Crutchfield’s Philadelphia basement — but it is a well-produced, good-sounding record that flatters Crutchfield’s voice and her talents much more effectively than American Weekend could have hoped to.  Deservedly, Stereogum just named it their Album of the Week.

This set at Music Hall of Williamsburg as part of the Don Giovanni Records showcase was originally supposed to feature a band, but the night’s blizzard made that impossible. Instead, we got a nine-song solo set that proved that Crutchfield’s songs can stand on their own, even live in a fairly large room. The set previewed four songs from Cerulean Salt – “Hollow Bedroom”, “Blue Pt. II”, “Swan Dive” and “You’re Damaged”, and as such, in cooperation Don Giovanni, we are releasing this set to coincide with the release of Cerulean Salt, which hit stores this Tuesday.  It is an excellent record, and one that we think will introduce Waxahatchee to a much broader audience.

I recorded this set with an excellent soundboard feed from the house engineer, Jim plus MBHO KA200N cardiod microphones.  Due to a particularly noisy audience and a quiet set, this recording is mostly the soundboard feed.  Some DI noise and hiss were present, which were mostly eliminated with software editing.  The final product I think will be a favorite. Enjoy!

Chelsea Light Moving: March 2, 2013 Maxwell’s – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Just before ripping into “Burroughs”, their first song, Thurston Moore opened this show by his new band Chelsea Light Moving with a quote from Mike Watt: “When you’re not playing, you’re paying.”

I had to remind myself at several points during this show that the exuberant, youthful guitarist and vocalist on the cozy Maxwell’s stage in his band’s own t-shirt was a 54-year-old member of rock royalty who I had seen perform in front of crowds hundreds of times this size. Sonic Youth may be on hiatus or it may be gone, but Thurston will keep playing – and keep playing well – for as long as he’s breathing. Chelsea Light Moving, as a band, isn’t Sonic Youth, but it isn’t just a dim facsimile of it, either. With Samara Lubelski (a well-known solo artist and member of Thurston’s solo band) on bass, John Moloney (Sunburned Hand of the Man) on drums and Keith Wood (Hush Arbors, Wooden Wand) on guitar, Chelsea Light Moving has an accomplished cast and its own personality. In some ways, CLM feels more like SST-era Sonic Youth – younger, hungrier, rawer. It seems fun to be in this band, in a way that’s almost impossible in a more established one.

Compared to an early performance back in September at 285 Kent (recording here), this time CLM felt more like a real band with real songs than a Moore & Friends jam session, with songs like “Alighted” more fully realized than their rough-sketch forms. There was also new material to be had, including the mid-tempo rocker “Sunday Stage”, which seemed like an homage to Wood’s other band, Hush Arbors. “Empires of Time” was dedicated to another rock n’ roll survivor, Roky Erickson, while “Staring Statues”, the set closer, gave us some Psychic Hearts-era Moore greatness. The entire show might have been worth the price of admission for the encore break alone, as Moore told stories, promised a fan he really would make some Feelies recordings he had said he would make fifteen years ago, and generally held court. He was calm, engaging, relaxed. Free of expectations. Chelsea Light Moving stands as a great band in its own right, and as a second act, it’s more than a worthy one.

We recorded this set from our usual spot in the venue with a flawless soundboard feed by longtime Maxwell’s engineer Carson Kopp and the band’s touring engineer Bentley.  I used a pair of Schoeps MK5 microphones for my source while nyctaper tried out his new set of Neumann TLM-102 large-diaphragm cardiod microphones.  We are offering both sources for your enjoyment, and both are outstanding. Enjoy!

Beach Fossils: February 23, 2013 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

The Beach Fossils self-titled first album was a refreshing debut from a band that had at that point been on our radar for a year. It was a well-received 80’s influenced indie-pop album that was fairly straightforward fun. But if you expected the band to make the same album over and over again, you’ll likely be disappointed in the new Beach Fossils album Clash The Truth. Dustin Payseur is a student of music — he’s both a collector of vast quantities of vintage vinyl and a sponge for knowledge. I’ve had both conversations about obscure 80’s music with Dustin and seen the incredible list of songs on his laptop. This is a performer who knows his craft and understands its history. So it should really come as no surprise that Clash is a more mature and focused album than its predecessor. And as with much of the early 80s Brit post-punk that influences this album, it also has a bit of sneer. Fortunately though, much of the band’s fan base seems to understand and accept the band’s admirable growth. On Saturday night, Beach Fossils sold out Bowery Ballroom and delivered a performance that featured much of Clash and a healthy dose of older material. Dustin has integrated two new members into the band and the new material is just gathering momentum live, but overall the band delivered a solid set with many highlights. Beach Fossils are on tour in the East but return to NYC for a show at 285 Kent this Sunday, March 3.

I recorded this set with my new Neumann TLM-102 large diaphragm cardioid microphones from our usual spot in this venue, and mixed with a fine board feed. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Deafheaven UnArtig Cap
[screenshot from UnArtigNYC video]

I have attended thousands of concerts over the years, so its not very often when a performer literally takes my breath away. At Saint Vitus on Friday night, Deafheaven was one of the few bands that effected me this way. The band opened their set with the first song of their debut album Roads to Judah “Violet” which begins with a very un-Metal like dual-guitar melodic passage before it crashes into the song proper, and features the intense screaming vocals of lead singer George Clarke. From that point forward, it was hard to take my eyes off Clarke whose magnetic stage presence and breathtaking vocals demand awe-inspired attention. And when Deafheaven begins a song, it doesn’t end quickly. The nearly hour-long set contained five songs — the first 3 tracks from Judah, a Mogwai dual-cover (streaming below) and a new song from their forthcoming album Sunbather. Throughout the show, Clarke’s unrelenting energy never wavered, and at its conclusion it was likely the audience and not the singer who needed oxygen. Deafheaven is from San Francisco, but came all the way East for this one-off show in support of Sacrament and Sannhet. They will tour Europe in April, dates here.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Sannhet set and the sound is equally superb. Enjoy!

Shellshag: February 9, 2013 Music Hall of Williamsburg – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Shellshag have a modest but very loyal following and on this recording from a couple of weeks ago at the second night of the Don Giovanni Records showcase at Music Hall of Williamsburg, you can hear them chant the band’s name in between songs. One of the reasons for this kind of support is that Shellshag is authentic — the duo have worked the DIY scene in multiple cities over the last fifteen years. Their recent partnership with Don Giovanni has worked well for both, as their appearances as the annual showcases have been highlight, and their last album Rumors in Disguise is perhaps their best yet. The relationship fortunately continues this year as Shellshag is poised to release a new album Shellshag Forever on DGR in April. The band revealed a new track this week, “Face to Face” (the live version is streaming below), which seems not only autobiographical but also describes the live layout of the duo on stage. While we wish greater exposure for a band that truly deserves it, and this new album could very well be that spark, like their vocal fans at Music Hall, sometimes we’re happy Shellshag remains our little secret.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Screaming Females set and the sound is superb. Enjoy!

Buffalo’s Lemuria aren’t actually on Don Giovanni Records, but as friends of the label they joined several of their like-minded acts for an epic night of music that also included Hilly Eye (that recording coming soon), Jeffrey Lewis (recording here), Waxahatchee (coming in early March) and Laura Stevenson (recording here). The band served up a healthy dose of their early-90s style sound which recalls the raw, direct style of acts like Superchunk and Sleater-Kinney. Highlights included the pop-punk confection “The One” from their Pebble LP and the more measured burner “Lipstick” from 2008’s Get Better.  The band’s tour calendar is empty save a Montreal date in May, but be on the lookout for them on their next NYC run.

I recorded this set from an optimal location in the venue with MBHO microphones and a soundboard feed provided by the house engineer, Jim.  The sound quality, like all of our recordings from this night, is excellent. Enjoy!

Bleeding Rainbow: February 12, 2013 Glasslands – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Bleeding Rainbow just released their first album, Yeah Right, under that band name, but the husband-and-wife team of Rob Garcia and Sarah Everton have been making music together for several years. As the band Reading Rainbow, the pair put out a couple of lo-fi records that hinted at, but didn’t fully deliver on their potential. With Yeah Right, the band has a masterfully produced record that does. Now joined by Greg Frantz on drums and Al Creedon on guitar, the beefed-up lineup has developed a rich, shoegaze sound with a newly-minted pop sheen. This show at Glasslands was the first NYC gig for the Philadelphia band since the record’s release, and they came out blazing. After a brief false start, the band launched into an extended version of the record’s leadoff track, “Go Ahead”, followed by the record’s next to two tracks, “Pink Ruff” and “Drift Away”.  One thing that sets Bleeding Rainbow apart from many like-minded acts is that they aren’t afraid to actually sing rather than let their vocals be buried in the washes of MBV-style guitars. Though Everton provides the lead vocal on most tracks, Garcia’s harmonizing with her gives the songs added depth. The pair mesh well together live, feeding off of each other’s energy, and enjoying the added freedom lent by the new personnel.  Bleeding Rainbow have set themselves on a path that will give them even more room to grow, and we look forward to watching that happen.

I recorded this set from our usual position in the venue with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones and a soundboard feed provided by longtime Glasslands engineer Josh.  The sound quality is excellent.  Enjoy!
