The Antlers: December 10, 2011 Webster Hall – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

About midway through the Antlers show at Webster Hall last night, I took a stroll around the venue just to try to take it all in. The 1200+ capacity venue was literally packed to the walls — it wasn’t an easy stroll. But the take-away is that this band can fill a venue of this size on a busy Friday night when concert-goers had many other choices. In the Antlers biggest ever show in NYC, the band delivered the goods. It was a ninety-minute set limited only in length by the late-night club that Webster Hall becomes after 11 p.m. We got the feeling that they could have played another half hour. The set consisted of an interesting mix of Burst Apart and Hospice material, including some songs we had not seen in a while. “Sylvia” is streaming below, and the stand-out performance brought back a powerful song that was not played earlier in the year. The Burst Apart material has grown in length and development in the live setting, and in particular “Teeth” (also streaming below) embodies that maturation. Just a few days removed from a 30-plus show tour of Europe, the Antlers were well rehearsed but undoubtedly a little fatigued. Fortunately, the energy of a sold-out triumphant hometown return show invigorated the quartet, so that there wasn’t an ebb moment in the entire ninety-minute set.

I recorded this set with the hyper-cardioid Neumann microphones placed at the front rail of the soundboard booth in the lower balcony, and mixed with a soundboard feed. The difficult room was mixed with precision by the Antlers FOH Dan Seiders, and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Tribes: December 8, 2011 Mercury Lounge – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Tribes have hit it big in their native England less than a year since their debut. Its easy to see why. The two EPs the band has released in 2011 are both packed with irresistible power pop, which borrows from Big Star at its most inspired and Cheap Trick at its most polished — and adds a Brit flavor. Tribes arrived on the US shores just a few days ago, and played their first-ever NYC show last night at Mercury Lounge. Apparently, the brit-buzz has followed them as the venue was packed. As the band will release their debut full-length in January (Baby on Island Records UK), the forty-minute set consisted of only four previously released tracks from the EPs and five new ones. We are streaming “Corner of an English Field”, a mid-tempo rocker with hooks aplenty and a driving beat. Its not hard to foresee that Tribes will soon be playing much larger venues than Mercury, especially given the can’t-miss quality of the songs that will hit in January. Tribes plays at Glasslands tonight, before returning to England after a few more US dates.

I recorded this set with the Neumanns positioned at the soundboard booth and mixed with a soundboard feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Avey Tare: December 2, 2011 Knitting Factory – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Avey Tare (aka Dave Portner) has been a prime writer and performer for Animal Collective for more than a decade, and has participated in many other projects during that time. However, it wasn’t until late last year that the first proper Avey Tare solo album was released. Down There (Paw Tracks) is a very personal album, which related both in theme and sound a dark period in Avey’s life. At its release, he declared that these songs would not be performed live. But one year later, it was a bit of a surprise that an Avey Tare solo tour was announced. At Knitting Factory on Friday night, Avey performed an outstanding fifty-minute set. The show included four songs from Down There, and in the AnCo tradition, five new songs were featured. The set was played as a single suite, with each song naturally progressing into the next. Of the new songs “In Photographs” and “Slow Words” sound nearly complete and are very strong compositions. Its currently unclear whether these songs are contemplated for a new Avey Tare album or will be ultimately become Animal Collective songs. Of the Down There material, “Lucky 1” and “Laughing Hieroglyphic” were highlights, and we’re streaming the latter. At the conclusion of the set, Avey answered the encore chants by informing the crowd that although he had no more songs to play, he would return to NYC in the near future. Avey Tare’s current tour continues throughout this week and next with dates in the Midwest and three shows on the West coast.

I recorded this set with the DPA 4021s raised to eight feet on a pole in front of the soundboard booth and mixed with an excellent feed from the soundboard. Since the crowd was quite respectful during the music, the mix is about 70/30 in favor of the room mics and the quality is superb. Enjoy!

moe.: November 26, 2011 Terminal 5 – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

My favorite moment of this moe. concert sort of encapsulates the dedication of this long-running prog-jam band and the allure that they offer dedicated followers. In a well-planned act of tribute to their friend, at the very moment when “Rebubula” returns from near silence to a resounding jam, two of taper T.J.’s buddies shouted for all of the microphones to capture “TJ Samulis 100th show!”. For those who think tapers are humorous killjoys, I thought this was not only hilarious but also a great little “watermark” on the recording. Its that kind of personal touch that comes directly from the band — guitarist Al Schnier reads fan-created “announcements” before the encore segment of every show, and the band themselves have always mingled among the fans when possible. Indeed for the last twelve years, moe. has hosted their own Labor Day festival, moe.down, which has also expanded to include a winter “snoe.down”. On this particular night, the second in a two-show Terminal 5 Thanksgiving weekend run, the band brought out all the stops. There were classics, some serious jam vehicles, some rare songs, and a full two and half hours of music. We are streaming “Brent Black”, which is pretty much a microcosm of the show itself. The song is a moe. classic and this version spans twenty-three minutes, contains a dual drum segment, and a bass solo. Pretty good for a 100th show.

I recorded this set from the front of the soundboard booth, which was caged at the rear of the floor. I raised the pole up to about 12 feet, and ran both the Neumanns and the DPAs, but also included the Apogee “Mini-me” A/D unit in front of the Neumanns to enrich the hypercardioid sound. Other than a consistent din of audience chatter, the sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Real Estate: November 23, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Another of the bands we make no secret of our love for is Real Estate.  Over the past three years that we have been following the band, we have watched the mature and develop sonically, culminating with their release of the new album Days on Domino Recording Company – their first for the tastemaking label. Days continues a run of good news for the band, who have continued to tour hard and earn accolades from critics and fans alike.  This show at Bowery Ballroom was the culmination of a two-month tour of Europe and the U.S., and it couldn’t have made for a better sendoff into the Thanksgiving holiday the following day.  The respectful, excited crowd cheered through the longest set of Real Estate’s that we have seen to date at 70 minutes, which covered almost every song on Days and their self-titled debut, plus their cover of Felt’s “Sunlight Bathed the Golden Glow”, a favorite on this tour.  In a market crowded with bands following others’ lead, Real Estate have distinguished themselves with a laid-back, unique sound that always surprises.  They have almost singlehandedly come to define their hometown of Ridgewood, New Jersey where three of the band members grew up together, and which has served up great music from the band’s fellow travelers and other unique talents like Julian Lynch and tour openers Big Troubles.  We closed out this show thankful not only for this great show, but for the band’s continuing support and future prospects.

I recorded this set with a combination of a soundboard feed by Kenny, the house engineer at Bowery Ballroom, and Schoeps MK22 “open cardiod” microphones.  The results are excellent. Enjoy!

Bardo Pond: November 19, 2011 Death By Audio – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Bardo Pond belongs to a select group of contemporary bands that are beyond categorization. Arguably their nearest contemporaries are Godspeed, but even that is an imperfect comparison. Bardo performs sweeping guitar based soundscapes, but within a song structure. At Death By Audio last weekend, the band performed a representative hour-long set to a modest but enthusiastic crowd. Along with 285 Kent, DBA has become a primary Brooklyn DIY venue with an upgraded sound system and excellent staff. The atmosphere was perfect for the Bardo show, as the relaxed approach and positive energy in the venue seemed to motivate the band. In fact, lead singer/flutist Isobel Sollenberger thanked the venue several times throughout the show. The highlight of the set was the finale, a thirteen minute version of “The Stars Behind”, which seems to encapsulate all that makes Bardo so compelling — melodic guitar intro, sweet vocals, and a slow-building powerful crescendo that crashes into an electronic outro. Its streaming below.

acidjack and I recorded this set by attaching a pair of DPA 4061 omnidirectional microphones to the low ceiling about ten feet in front of the stage, and mixed with a fine soundboard feed. The results are outstanding. Enjoy!

Purling Hiss: November 18, 2011 Cameo Gallery – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

There is something completely natural and unassuming about Mike Polizze’s approach to music. He’s recorded under the name Purling Hiss for the last several years, but recently recruited a band to perform live. Purling Hiss is all about no-nonsense guitar-centered hard rock. Polizze is from the Philadelphia school of long-haired guitar, which includes Kurt Vile and Adam Granduciel of The War On Drugs. The common characteristic (besides the hair) is that each of these artists is a fairly mellow and unassuming person off-stage who immediately crank the volume and the energy when the amps are turned on. Last week at Cameo Gallery, we saw Purling Hiss for the first time since they opened for Vile at Bowery last June. This time, the band headlined and performed an outstanding forty-five minute set that never let up. Polizze’s guitar was front and center from the outset and each song provided an opportunity to stretch out and flex the axe. We’re streaming “Passenger Queen”, which switched to overdrive about halfway through the six minute song and provided one of the many Polizze peaks.

I recorded this set with the Neumann’s raised on a pole eight feet high directly in front of the soundboard and mixed with a soundboard feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Country Mice: November 16, 2011 Glasslands – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Yes, New York, we do have our very own homegrown answer to Alabama’s Drive-By Truckers, and they’re called Country Mice. They don’t celebrate Southern roots they don’t have (two bandmembers are from Lawrence, Kansas), sure, but the rootsy tinge to their sound, married to big, balls-to-the-wall major chord riffs, will draw immediate comparisons. Although I had enjoyed sets of theirs before, this PopGun Booking‘-sponsored show at Glasslands showcased a tight, confident and mature band ready to take things to the next level. This set, opening for the Nashville guitar wizard William Tyler, led off with some new songs before moving into material from their recent Kanine Records release Twister and continuing to mix those in with the non-Twister material.  After the already-packed house had screamed its approval for songs like “Morning Son” and “Bullet of a Gun”, the set crescendoed, appropriately, at the final number, “Festival” off of Twister. With Twister under their belts and more good ideas coming, Country Mice are sure to keep winning converts on both sides of the Mason-Dixon.

I recorded this set with Schoeps “open cardiod” microphones to give a wide, expansive soundstage, coupled with a soundboard feed by Josh at Glasslands. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Deer Tick: November 20, 2011 Webster Hall – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

It was undoubtedly one of the most memorable concert experiences of my life — The Replacements at The Ritz in the Summer of 1986. The band was apparently riding high, touring on one of the greatest albums of the era Tim. The album was released in the Fall of 1985, and by the Summer of ’86 it established The Replacements as the foremost alternative band of the time. The motley crew of Midwest punks had matured into a powerful unit led by the increasingly confident Paul Westerberg and the rambunctious lead guitar of Bob Stinson. That night on East 11th Street, I entered the venue as the concert began with “Bastards of Young”, the lead track of side two of Tim. As inebriated as the band were the massive throngs of fans, one of whom leapt from the balcony into the slam-dancing front of the crowd. They weren’t called “mosh pits” yet. The concert is also legendary because Westerberg himself jumped into the crowd and broke his wrist, resulting in the cancellation of the balance of the tour and sending the band into a few month of hiatus. By the time the Replacements returned Bob Stinson had left the band, and things were never the same. But for that single manic and magic alcohol-fueled night in the Summer of 1986, The Replacements were the best band on the planet.

Twenty-five years later in the exact same venue (now called Webster Hall), I was fortunate to experience another magical night courtesy of one of today’s foremost heirs to the legacy of The Replacements — Deer Tick. The sold-out crowd was similarly exuberant, the alcohol flowed freely (and covered the stage by show’s end), and most special of all, Deer Tick played a picture perfect cover of “Bastards of Young” (streaming below). Fortunately, no limbs were broken in the process, although several guitars, keyboards and amps were smashed in the anarchy of the show and tour finale. We’ve seen Deer Tick cover Tim material before — their performance this Summer of “Waitress in the Sky” appeared on nyctaper in August [here]. But this time it was special, not only because of the incredible coincidence of location, but because Deer Tick has seemingly fully realized and embraced their position as the contemporary carriers of the torch for a particular musical approach and attitude. Just as the Replacements had little regard for the pretense and affectation of the bastions of “serious” rock music, Deer Tick’s approach has evolved into a group intent on making music that’s all about being young, living on the edge, drinking too much, and having a ball, all the while maintaining enough of a creative edge to guarantee that the music has staying power. John McCauley is equally comfortable performing a solo version of the bitter poignancy of John Prine’s “Unwed Fathers”, or Deer Tick’s mournful “Houston TX”, as much as he is smashing his guitar during “Let’s All Go To The Bar.” Similarly, while the Replacements cover is the take-away from this show, the encore set began with John Lennon’s tragic and painful “Mother” (also streaming below).

Of course, there is a cost to this approach. As the Replacements burned out far too soon, and suffered the wrath of their contemporary critics, one fears that Deer Tick may not be capable of continuing this peak level of performance. Already, the dinosaurs of indie criticism have unleashed the backlash. A creative writing school dropout named Ian Cohen published a hatchet job on the new Deer Tick album Divine Providence on Pitchfork, which was so utterly devoid of any honest understanding of the music (or music in general) and reeked of an agenda, that its hard to take the review seriously. Deer Tick doesn’t seem to have. And although Pitchfork hasn’t been a serious tastemaker to non-casual music fans in nearly a decade, there’s probably a lesson in there. Don’t let the magic get away so soon. Just as that 1986 night at The Ritz was the Waterloo for the best era of The Replacements, it all can end with a simple stage dive or taking your critics too seriously. By the end of ’86, Westerberg had fired Bob and sacrificed his creative edge for a big record deal. One can only hope that Deer Tick will stay with the excellent Partisan Records, and keep their energy, confidence and perspective. I suspect that if Ian Cohen was stroking his thesaurus in 1986, he would have panned Tim. I also suspect that John McCauley already understands all of this. At least I hope he does.

I recorded this set with the Neumann microphones mounted in the center of the soundboard booth at the balcony rail, and mixed with an excellent soundboard feed. Deer Tick’s front of house sound engineer for this tour was the excellent Melanie, who has also mixed in several local venues. Her mix on this night was simply superb and we’re extremely please with the quality of this recording. Enjoy!

Mount Moriah: October 12, 2011 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

If you can tell much about someone from the friends they keep, then Mount Moriah has everything going for them. We saw the band open for The Rosebuds last month, the band has been joined at times by Brad Cook and Phil Cook from Megafaun and by Daniel Hart (who seems to play with only the best), and Mount Moriah will soon tour with The Hold Steady’s Craig Finn. But friendship aside, what really separates this band from the pack is talent — the superb songwriting of band leaders Heather McEntire and Jenks Miller that is brought to life by McEntire’s rich and emotive vocal style. Mount Moriah’s debut self-titled full length album showcases these talents in a strikingly well-produced set of eight songs, seven of which were performed at the Bowery show. We’ve chosen to stream “Plane”, a perfectly performed dirge that highlights the band’s many strengths. The current tour announcement promises more dates, which will with good fortune include a NYC show. A bit of advice — don’t miss it.

I recorded this set with the vocal-friendly DPA microphones mounted at our standard balcony rail position and mixed with a well-balanced soundboard feed. The results are outstanding. Enjoy!
