The War On Drugs released Slave Ambient this past week. Its an album that’s been in the works for a couple of years, since the 2008 release of their excellent Secretly Canadian Records debut Wagonwheel Blues. But in a way, its an album that’s been waiting much longer for its release. The band’s leader Adam Granduciel incorporated some older songs into the album and spent many months tweaking the mixes, reworking arrangements, and perfecting what will undoubtedly become one of 2011’s best albums. When we recorded The War On Drugs in January, the new songs were beginning to take shape, but when the album versions were released, the positive developments were striking. On Friday at Cameo Gallery, The War On Drugs performed a superb ninety-minute set that consisted primarily of Slave Ambient material — eight of the album’s twelve songs were played. Of the new songs, the second-slotted “Baby Missiles” was particularly tight and focused and we’re streaming it below. Other highlights included the jammed transition from “It’s Your Destiny” into “I Was There”, and the eighteen-minute encore of “A Needle In Your Eye #16” with an extended guitar and sampled-driven ambient jam. The War On Drugs will be touring throughout the Fall. While they are on a current East and Midwest swing, they will tour Europe in September, and return to the US in October.

I recorded this set with the Neumann microphones mounted in the center of the room in front of the soundboard booth and raised to 12 feet. The room mics were mixed with a mono board feed to accentuate the vocals, and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Sonic Youth: August 12, 2011 Williamsburg Waterfront – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Sonic Youth long ago reached that rare point in an artist’s career when they can do exactly whatever they want, whenever they want.  Two great  examples happened last week: a day after they released two incredible tracks on the glowingly-reviewed vinyl-only retrospective box set by the North Carolina imprint Three Lobed Recordings, the band dropped into the radically revamped Williamsburg waterfront and its row of luxury condos and played a set of older and rarely-played cuts.  Albums that have gone almost-untouched on recent tours saw the light of day: “Brave Men Run,” “Ghost Bitch” and (the more-commonly played) “Death Valley ’69” from Bad Moon Rising were on the menu.  Dirty – regarded, rightly or wrongly as the band’s most “commercial” record – wore its age well on an extended “Sugar Kane” and the infectious “Drunken Butterfly,” with Kim spinning round the stage like a madwoman twenty to thirty years her junior.  “Starfield Road,” from the relatively unappreciated Experimental Jet Set, Trash and No Star, made the cut, alongside classics like “Kill Yr Idols” (originally from the Kill Yr Idols EP) and “Cotton Crown” (from Sister).  Late-period material similarly seemed at home; “What We Know” sounded just as vital among these gems as it has at recent shows where the band played almost exclusively new material.  And, for good measure, the band’s second encore (of three) was the title track to Thurston’s mid-90s solo effort, Psychic Hearts.  Other than their deep-as-shit discography, Sonic Youth don’t feel like a “classic” band, with energy, enthusiasm and intensity that could put most crews of 22-year-olds to shame.  They can carry a show and rule the night anywhere in this city – be it United Palace, Terminal 5, Music Hall, or an outdoor stage facing the bright lights of Manhattan.

The show wrapped with the feral noise squall of “Inhuman,” as Moore howled at the soulless towers of steel and glass and the band’s immense blasts of feedback threatened to shake the junk to its foundations.  A lot in this world feels built on a shaky foundations these days.  Some artists have the power to remind you that some things still are real, and good, and right.  Fifty years from now, those architectural monstrosities will probably be rubble.  Sonic Youth will be a monument to their era.

Johnny Fried Chicken Boy and I recorded this set with multiple mobile rigs that were mixed together after the show (thanks to page for the help with the sync).  Hours of post-processing work have gone into making this recording sound as good as possible, given the limitations of recording an outdoor show, our location in the venue, and the enthusiasm of the crowd.  It is by no means our best capture of Sonic Youth (see the links to Terminal 5 and Music Hall above for those), but it is by far the most interesting setlist we have recorded for the site.  Samples are included, and all files are tagged for easy importing into your favorite music software.  Enjoy!

New York crowds are notoriously, almost epically jaded. As much as bands love the exposure of America’s largest city and cultural capital, they also tend to be dispirited by the “show me” attitude of crowds that have seen it all before. Being from Brooklyn themselves, The Psychic Paramount must know this all too well – which is why they pulled out all the stops at Union Pool on a recent Tuesday night to deliver a jaw-dropping set that was one of the most incredible I have seen this year. Cloaked for the duration in thick billows of smoke, their set, culled primarily from their latest release, II, left the crowd in awe at the vortex of sound coming from this three-man band. I don’t know that I have been to another show this year that had as many audience members actually talking about the show when it was over – and stark silent during. These instrumental songs seethe with emotion; even staring into shadows in the smoke, you can’t help but be moved by them. It doesn’t hurt, of course, that they are rendered by players of obvious talent and technical skill – bassist Ben Armstrong and guitarist Drew St. Ivany first met in the now-defunct art-noise-jazz band Laddio Bolocko, a less rock n’ roll but no less compelling outfit, and drummer Jeff Conaway is (as in most three pieces) the glue that gives the band its propulsive, driving sound. Bands like TPP are the artists that live shows were made for – even this fine recording cannot capture their brilliance. Mark your calendars, folks – their next show is September 3 right here in Brooklyn at a free show at the Aviator Sports Complex with White Hills, Pictureplane, Wise Blood and others, and after that, our friends in the UK can catch them at the always-legendary ATP Nightmare Before Christmas. Do it. They’ll blow your mind.

I recorded this set with both the DPA microphones set up in our usual spot in the venue, and a soundboard feed. At the band’s request, only the microphone portion is being used, as they felt it provided a more natural, balanced sound. Enjoy!

Deer Tick: August 10, 2011 Wantagh NY – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

We have always personally liked Deer Tick, all the way back to meeting John McCauley for the first time in early 2008. He seemed genuine and the rootsy nature of the band’s music reflected that sincerity. As Deer Tick has grown in stature and size, its been easy to root for them. So when we were contacted by the Tommy Brull Foundation about recording their charity concert on Long Island, it came as no surprise the Deer Tick had agreed to headline the show. The Foundation was organized in 2008 to celebrate the life of Tommy who passed away at the age of 23, and it supports a variety of causes in his memory that benefit disabled children. On Wednesday at Mulcahy’s in Wantagh, Deer Tick truly gave it their all for the cause, as they performed a non-stop set that spanned two hours and contained thirty songs. The set culled tracks from all three of their releases, and also featured five new songs that will appear on an album to be released in October. We are streaming one of the stronger new tracks “Funny Word”. The band also let it all hang out and played a bunch of eclectic covers, including the Replacements song we posted on Friday.

Deer Tick Covered The Replacements – MP3 Download + Streaming Song

In 1985, the Replacements were at their peak. After the breakthrough success of the brilliant Let It Be, the band’s follow-up album was arguably a more consistently excellent release and stands today as the pinnacle of the Replacements catalog. Tim was the first Replacements album on Sire Records, and sadly the last album with original guitarist Bob Stinson. Two years later, Pleased To Meet Me was a clear step down from Tim. The band’s final three albums each represented a decrease in quality from the previous one, so that by the time the Replacements broke up in 1990, their creative output was spent.

Among the best of the current list of bands that exhibit a clear Replacements influence are Titus Andronicus and Deer Tick. Ian O’Neil is a former member of Titus and current guitarist for Deer Tick, and on Wednesday night with Deer Tick, Ian and John McCauley traded vocals on “Waitress in the Sky”. While several other tracks from Tim are clear standouts, “Waitress” is a short number with a bunch of earworm lines. Paul Westerberg is said to have written this from the unsympathetic perspective of the nasty passengers with whom flight attendants have to deal.

Widowspeak: August 2, 2011 Glasslands and June 30, 2011 285 Kent – FLAC/MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

The folks over at PopGun Booking have a deserved reputation for putting some of the best up-and-coming acts on the Glasslands stage months and years before the wider public notices. When I saw Widowspeak back in March, they were a very new band with almost no recorded output, but they were already very much on their game as performers, with many great songs already in the hopper. Almost five months later to the day, and the band was back at Glasslands celebrating the release of their self-titled debut record on the hot Brooklyn imprint Captured Tracks.  The band’s set was if anything more confident and polished than the March show, and unsurprisingly featured more songs, including the newer tracks “Gun Shy”, “Hard Times”, “Half Awake” and a new number I could not identify by name (just bought the album this morning). “Half Awake,” being performed live for the first time, is one of the most somber tunes in the band’s catalog, but it is beautiful in its bleakness.

We also caught another great performance from the band back in June, presented by Brooklyn promoter ToddP at the DIY venue 285 Kent next door. This set sounds fantastic, and although a bit shorter than the Glasslands set, has many of the band’s strongest songs, including the standout new single “Gun Shy”. I’m also a sucker for the band’s cover of Chris Isaak’s “Wicked Game,” which they played at the show I saw back in March, and is also the b-side of the “Gun Shy” single.

The 285 Kent set was recorded with Neumann microphones and a soundboard feed from an ideal location in the venue that avoided a lot of the chatter going on. The Glasslands recording was made with perfectly situated Schoeps microphones and a great soundboard feed from Derek, but there is a light buzzing emanating from an onstage monitor that is captured in the board feed. With that caveat (and a bit of crowd chatter during a few songs), that recording is also excellent. Enjoy!

Quiet Lights: June 19, 2011 Public Assembly (NYCTaper Northside Showcase) – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The Brooklyn band Quiet Lights was high on my list of artists to invite to our inaugural Northside Festival showcase, and they delivered, closing out the NYCTaper Northside Festival showcase at Public Assembly with an intense set of songs that included most of their recently-released EP, The Big Fear. As with the first time I saw them at the Knitting Factory, they brought a dense, heavy sound with them, leavened by vocalist Yseult Tyler’s dreamscape vocals. Theirs is the sound of the late night or a slow-breaking dawn, and that made for a perfect late-night ending to a very long weekend of late nights.

I recorded this set with the AKG large-diaphragm microphones and a soundboard feed, as with the other sets from this show. This set emphasizes the soundboard feed a bit more heavily and sounds quite good. Enjoy!

Oneida: June 19, 2011 Secret Project Robot (Absolute II Set) – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The third piece of Oneida’s Thank Your Parents trilogy was released in June, and the band performed each of the three albums of the project on the same weekend. We previously posted recordings of the Preteen Weaponry set, and the Rated O set. The final piece was performed at the very unique hour of daybreak, which in June amounted to 4:45 a.m on a Sunday. While some of the participants (namely the band) stayed up all night from the Saturday full-day jam session, I decided to make a fresh day of the event, went to bed early on Saturday night and set the alarm for 4 a.m. When I arrived at Monster Island pre-dawn, I expected a virtually empty room, sans band and diehards. Quite to the contrary, the main space at Secret Project Robot was loaded with all-nighters and a few early risers and was essentially a filled room. As the sun rose and reflected off the Brooklyn side of the East River, Absolute II was played in its entirety. This is difficult music to comprehend on a first listen, but as the sunlight seeped in through the open door on River Street, it was an appropriate sublime soundtrack to accompany the brain haze of an early Sunday daybreak seen through the eyes of the sleep deprived. The entire Thank Your Parents trilogy is a unique musical accomplishment from a band that has spent the last decade and a half inventing new ways to express its infinite musical potential.

I recorded this same in the same manner as the previous two sets, with the Neumanns mounted at the soundboard and mixed with a modest soundboard feed. The sound quality is representative of the performance. Enjoy!

Shows at Maxwell’s are always a treat, in no small part because you get to spend quality time with a relatively “big” band in a venue much smaller than they normally play (we caught them at Bowery Ballroom not too long ago).  This show by The Black Angels – in town for a series of shows, including headlining the 4Knots Festival – fit that description.  Packing the 200-capacity room, the Angels blew out the room with their layered, reverb-heavy sound.  One could be forgiven for thinking they were a band out of Manchester or thereabouts rather than one of America’s top music towns, Austin, Texas – their baggy sound shares as much commonality with mid-90s UK rock as it does with the “psychedelic rock” tag the band usually finds stuck to them.  This set proved that the band could rock like a huge band even in a small room (and without the killer light show they had last time), with the big rockers like “Black Grease” getting obvious love from the Friday night crowd.  Unsurprisingly, the set focused heavily on their 2010 record, Phosphene Dream, which has earned them proper critical acclaim.  I could hope to see them again at Maxwell’s in the near future, but let’s face it, this band is probably headed for Terminal 5 (and good for them).

hi and lo and I recorded this set with a four-mic mix from our usual spot in the venue.  The band’s sound engineer would not permit us to utilize a soundboard feed, but the sound is nonetheless excellent.  Enjoy!

The comeback of Tom Vek was unexpected, but based upon the early returns it has been well worth the wait. After the success of his debut in 2005 We Have Sound, Vek fell out of sight. Six years later, his second album Leisure Seizure contains the same melodic but frenetic energy that propelled Sound, but works within a more mature framework. Tom came to NYC for a quick two-show trip last week, and we were fortunate to catch the Union Pool show on Wednesday. Vek took the stage with a four-piece band of multi-instrumentalists, that at times includes three bass guitars, two guitars and keys, effects, drums and drum effects. The band members were all amplified by separate digital interface (“DI’s”) boxes and inner-ear monitors (IEM’s), so that while the stage sound was silent, the PA speakers burst forth with crystal clear sound. Vek began the show with two tracks from Seizure, including lead-off “Hold Your Hand”, before revisiting the 2005 charting single and the debut album’s first track “C-C” (streaming below). The set then flowed unabated except for minor instrument swaps through a well-paced hour of songs from each of the two albums. The band seemed to be all business as Vek spoke very little to the crowd and the group wasted no time in between songs. The quality of the material and Vek’s no-nonsense approach bode well for the return of this compelling artist. Tom Vek is currently on an extensive tour through the UK, but we expect he’ll return to the US for a full tour this Fall.

I recorded this set with the Neumanns mounted on the balcony and mixed with a superb balanced board feed. The band’s advanced equipment set-up created a board mix of great clarity and this recording reflects that quality. Enjoy!
