Oneida: December 13, 2008 Knitting Factory – Flac and MP3 Downloads

December 14, 2008

In a survey taken for the NY Press Music Issue a couple of months ago, we were asked to participate, and listed Oneida as the best live act in NYC. Last night at the Knitting Factory’s “Oneida Fest“, the band proved us right. On one of the final nights of the Manhattan Knitting Factory, “house band” Oneida delivered an intense skull-splitting 65 minutes of their most powerful psychedelic post-prog. The setlist included three eclectic covers — from the late destructo-hardcore of GG Allin (actually “Discipline” is a Throbbing Gristle song) to Funkadelic to The Modern Lovers. The later featured Oneida co-founder “Papa Crazee”, i.e. Pat Sullivan of Oakley Hall on vocals. The final treat was an extremely rare dip into the earliest of their music — a 26-minute headrush of a version of “Ballad of Vaurice” from their first album.

We have seen Oneida five times on 2008, and each time was a thoroughly different, but equally intense experience. Three of those recordings are still featured on this site, February at The Knit, March at Market Hotel, and August at South Street Seaport.

We recorded from the riser area of the balcony and were extremely pleased with the sound in the venue, which was mixed to perfection by the house soundboard tech. The volume was intense without distortion and each instrument was separated and identifiable. Subsequently, the sound quality on this recording is superb. Enjoy!

On Friday night, Oneida performed their new album Preteen Weaponry for the first time in NYC and the scene could not have been more surreal and yet completely appropriate. As the black rain clouds hovered overhead and the holiday crowd filtered in and around the Seaport, Oneida dipped into their bag of magic tricks and pulled out the most psychedelic prog-rock music they have produced to date — an album with influences from A Saucerful of Secrets to Bug — that could have been appropriately performed in 1968, 1988 or 2008.

As Bobby rose from his keyboard seat to strap on the bass for much of the Preteen set, the center stage of the band shifted to Kid Millions. The keys and guitars set the mood for the album and sustain the long-form melodic structure, but its the drums that are the lead instrument on this album. Kid propels the band while beating relentlessly in double time. Each part of Preteen molds directly into the next, but it is the consistent perfection of the beat that provided the backbone for this outstanding performance.

We recorded this set from a fine position inside of the soundboard tent, and we are quite grateful to the excellent sound crew for the permission to get under their tent and avoid the rain. We are doubly fortunate that the wind did not hamper this recording and we were able to capture this excellent concert with a superb recording. Enjoy!

When Oneida took the stage on Sunday morning at 2 a.m., a substantial percentage of the packed crowd at Market Hotel had already called it a night. The night’s festivities began at 9:30 p.m. and continued through a frenetic array of music, lights, and crowd buzz for nearly five hours before the headliners appeared. The core group of diehards were rewarded, as Oneida delivered a blistering and unwavering set of 75 minutes of their unique powerful neo-psychedelic punk. The highlights included the 14-minute trance-like version of “Snow Machine”, and the set-ending “Double Lock Your Mind” where Bobby and Kid traded several minutes of pounding crescendo beats and closed the set at nearly 3:30 a.m.

The Market Hotel presents a compelling and interesting new approach to live music. While the location is actually a home and developmental space for 8 artists, on weekends it becomes a private party of music managed by the ubiquitous Brooklyn promoter ToddP. While an early event caused a minor legal problem, it appears that the artists and the promoter have ironed out the system and have created a space with a buzz, a great vibe, and some terrific energetic young bands. We saw absolutely no violations of the kind which brought about the legal issues, as attendees appeared to be respecting the space and the rules.

There are two unfortunate aspects of the venue that need to be reassessed. Since the concerts are technically part of a private party, the space permits smoking but does not provide much ventilation. A vast number of people took advantage and chain-smoked throughout the night. The result was an aesthetically unpleasant cloud of cigarette smoke, which was unfortunately a health risk for asthmatics like us. Frankly, we are not going to be able to return to this venue after the breathing problems we encountered as a result. We would hope that the venue would create a smoke free environment, or limit smoking to the outer rooms.

The other problem for the Market is its rather primitive sound system. There were a ton of technical problems throughout the night, particularly with saturation and distortion in vocal microphones. The hard-working sound tech solved most of the problems, but you can hear some of that vocal distortion in this recording. Fortunately, we were able to set up at an excellent location in front of the stacks, and capture an excellent recording albeit within the limitations of the system — some minor distortion, buzz, and feedback are evident throughout. Enjoy!

At last Friday’s multi-band bill at the Knitting Factory, headliner Oneida made sure there were no stones left unturned. As “Fat” Bobby introduced each song with stream of consciousness banter, and the quartet pounded out in perfect syncopation, the level of intensity reached its peak during a particularly tight 11-minute version of “Up With People”. After their hour-long sonic explosion of psychedelic neo-punk, the lights came up quickly and Oneida left the crowd dazed but satisfied.

This recording was made from the identical location as Oakley Hall, but is perhaps a bit clearer as the volume was quite intense for this set. We thank Bobby, Kid and the rest of Oneida for the permission to record and the notification of that fact to the venue. It was a terrific night of music, and we’re very pleased we captured it all. Enjoy!
