Trey Anastasio Band: April 22, 2017 Wanee Music Festival (Live Oak, FL)

April 24, 2017
By

Though veteran Bob Weir closed out this year’s Wanee Festival main stage in fine fashion, it was Trey Anastasio Band who captured the most emotional highlight. Clearly moved by the death of Butch Trucks, with whom he had played on this very Wanee stage in years past, Anastasio and his band took the fired-up crowd through everything from hard boogie numbers like “Cayman Review” to a funky cover of Gorillaz’ “Clint Eastwood” to several of Anastasio’s more downbeat offerings. Whatever the feel of the exact moment, Anastasio and his band owned it, with Trey beaming at the front of the stage for much of the set, just as he was brought to tears recalling his time with Trucks and the Allman Brothers. Perhaps most notable about this set to me personally was the energy and inventiveness of it compared to the lackluster Phish set I saw earlier this year; if the full band interplay wasn’t quite what it is with the main band, the enthusiasm behind it was a night-and-day difference. Perhaps it’s not a surprise; most artists, like most people, care about context and place, and this place brought back memories for Trey that no doubt can’t be replicated in a stadium-type setting. Thanks to this set — which ended on a billowing cover of Zeppelin’s “Dazed and Confused,” Trey and his band made some Wanee Festival memories for many of us, too.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones FOB with my man Fried Chicken Boy. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Whether this second night of Phish‘s 2016 fall run appealed to you or not, it wasn’t a night for the fans who love the big rockers, or the hits. It’s no surprise that the band’s latest album Big Boat saw heavy representation, including a debut of “I Always Wanted It This Way.” There’s considerable pressure on acts in the fourth decade of their career to “play the hits,” and while Phish may not have “hits” in the same way as some other bands, they still have those tour staples that the fans expect to see in regular rotation. While those classics were present from time to time in this set — “Maze,” “Wolfman’s Brother,” “Possum,” “Twist,” and “Carini,” for example — the songs just named were about it. If the band wanted to send the message that “Phish 3.0” still believes that it has new music worth making, they did that on this night.

Any Phish show is likely to have its fanboys and its detractors, and part of the fun of a band like this is that one person’s relative bummer of a set can fall firmly in another dozen’s wheelhouse. That said, people who have attended far more shows than I have can better describe the alchemy of a transcendent Phish set, and most longtime fans I spoke with admitted that this unevenly-paced one at the North Charleston Coliseum didn’t quite have it. It’s not unfair to say that some of these Big Boat and Fuego songs need more road time to come into their own, though the saccharine “Joy” has had since 2009 and doesn’t seem likely to. In addition to the selection of material, there was the pacing, as the first set started off with a string of mostly-mediocre material before “Maze” came along to refocus everyone’s attention. Even a solid “Carini” (though marred by childish screaming during the chorus) couldn’t quite make that first set make sense, especially as it was led into by the gimmicky, off-key and quite frankly annoying “Ass Handed” interlude.

The second set overall was much better, with the non-album track “Mercury,” leading off as an absolute highlight, followed by “Twist” into the extremely strong debut of “I Always Wanted It This Way.” The proggy, synth-led track felt like the kind of new music you hope a band makes at this point in their career, representing such an evolution that it made the song feel like a familiar-sounding cover. Unfortunately, things went back off the rails after that, as the buzz-killing “Miss You” was followed by the milquetoast “Fuego.” After a killer “Sand” put things back on the right track, we got plunged back into ballad territory with “Joy” before “Possum” closed things out on a high note. The one-song encore nodded toward another of the band’s strongest traits, as they delivered a rollicking “Good Times, Bad Times,” that found Trey taking his best shot at Robert Plant and Jimmy Page at once.

Nonetheless, there’s plenty to like about this tour so far. Mainly because it’s not a greatest-hits tour–this band is actually trying to make something new, after all this time. If this part of the tour has a few stutter-steps, or a few shows that are slightly less-than, you still have to reward this band for being what it is. For trying.

I recorded this set at the soundboard with Schoeps MK41V supercardiods into an Aeta PSP3 preamp. The right channel of “Blaze” was patched from the left channel during most of the song, but the remainder of the show’s sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Phish represents a lot of things that people don’t understand. Tell those who listen to almost all of the other bands I listen to that you’re going to a Phish show, and expect rolled eyes and chuckles. At one time, Phish meant to its fans the continuation of the promise of The Grateful Dead and the beautiful movement they created; that gave way, in short order, to Phish being a juggernaut in its own right. If anything, the band’s very stylistic and and generational dissimilarity to the Dead is a key source of lament for its detractors. For others, so is the fact that they play really long songs, some of which have wincingly twee lyrical concepts. These things, I’ll concede.

Some people will never be convinced, but if you’re in the mood to be, you could do worse than starting with this excellent Village Voice blog post. Maybe a Phish show is a “you have to be there” kind of thing, but I’d like not to think so. Their career was, after all, built in part by people sharing live tapes. If you listen to this recording, in particular the emotional rollercoaster of a kickoff to the second set from “Punch You In the Eye” into “Carini”, followed by an especially cosmic rendition of “Ghost”, you might get an inkling of what this is all about when its firing on all cylinders. What’s on offer is neither party music nor music school pyrotechnics nor straight ahead rock n’ roll, but some combination of all three, a high wire act of a journey for its audience that only masters of their craft could create. One can’t ignore, too, the skills of Phish’s crew, especially veteran light man Chris Kuroda, who makes Phish’s shows as visually stunning as anything in the music business, and the entire FOH sound crew, who accomplished the difficult feat of making a windy, open-field outdoor venue sound flawless.

I haven’t attended a huge number of shows myself (this was the first I taped since 1999, though I’ve attended others since then), so, as was commented on our post of last night’s show, I won’t allow myself standing to say whether this was a “great” Phish show. But it was a reminder of the many things this band has done so right. Haters might ask themselves what they have against a band who created a community this large and this durable organically, turning their hard work into something commercially successful and culturally relevant, even if not to the mainstream. “Phish 3.0” at this point has a little something for everybody, community-wise, continuing to grow its fan base from the grizzled vets to the kids in their early 20s getting into their groove for the first time. For us tapers, seeing the band at this point is part ritual, part nostalgia trip. Most people are aware that they sell very good soundboard recordings on their site, meaning what we’re doing doesn’t have the same relevance, maybe, that it did before. But the mere act of recording the band is, for us, our connection to the community and to a band that for many of us was the one that brought us into the hobby to begin with. We share the recordings not only because they represent our own personal takes on the show, but out of tradition, community, and the original spirit that made this band what it is today.

I recorded this set from the same position nyctaper used for last night’s recording, forward of the board and dead center. Tonight’s recording was made with Schoeps MK4V cardiod microphones and the warm Aerco custom preamp. The crowd was generally respectful around us, meaning the only occasional flaws are gusts of wind that were stronger than those experienced last night. Enjoy!

I’ll be the first to admit that my street cred when it comes to Phish is pretty light. After all, its been almost fifteen years since I’ve actually even seen the band live. That night in the Fall of 1999 at Nassau Coliseum was a fairly famous Phish event, when lyricist Tom Marshall took the stage to sing a few covers with the band. I was also at a Madison Square Garden show during New Year’s week in 1998 when the band played a mini acoustic set in the middle of the show. But 90s memories aside, I do still have some very good friends with close connections to the band — close enough to give us the first-report exclusive of the Phish reunion way back in August of 2008, for which we took a lot of flak but which ultimately proved to be correct. So when it was announced that Phish would play three local GA shows at Randall’s Island I figured it was about time I got out and saw them again and brought to the site a recording that many of our readers have asked about over the years.

The trek to Randall’s started out a little rocky — a long line and long-ish wait for the Ferry. But once on the boat the day went about as smooth as could be expected. At the GA shows, there is no “tapers’ section” to speak of, so when I arrived as the second taper to reach the spot we pretty much set up where we landed — about 30 feet in front of the board and pretty close to the ideal spot. Phish fans take a lot of criticism but in reality people were extremely nice to us and also respectful of the rigs. We weren’t able to raise the mic pole as high as I would have liked because we were instructed not to block the band’s cameras, but even with a “low” pole, there is surprisingly little chatter on this recording.

My knowledge of Phish is not sufficient for me to say whether this was a “great” show but I’m pretty sure it was a very good one. Perhaps motivated by the release of their new album Fuego, by all accounts of the current tour the band is playing very well right now. And while Friday’s show did feature songs from the new album (we are streaming the excellent performance of “Fuego”), the show itself didn’t dwell on the new material with only three played. Overall the band played a nice selection of songs highlighted by first set standouts “Bathtub Gin” (also streaming) and “Stash”, and second set stalwarts “Down With Disease” and “David Bowie” and a rare-ish cover of local band TV on the Radio (“Golden Age”). I can’t say this show will make me drop everything and follow Phish on tour, but I certainly won’t wait another 15 years to see them again.

I recorded this show with the large diaphragm Neumann mics from the front of board spot referenced above. These mics perform well outdoors and this show was no exception. There are two bumps from balloons, but with the excellent location, good crowd and no weather-related issues, this recording came out superbly. Enjoy!

acidjack and hi and lo will be recording the Saturday night Phish show for posting on the site on Sunday or Monday.

Trey Anastasio Band: January 24, 2013 Capitol Theatre (Port Chester, NY) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The band Phish will be celebrating its 30th year of existence this year – an impressive feat for any band, but even more so for one as consumed with playing long, varied sets that maintains a pretty intense tour schedule when they’re out.  But as Trey Anastasio reminded us at the beautifully refurbished Capitol Theatre in the Westchester suburbs last week, his Trey Anastasio Band project has had some staying power of its own. This year marks that band’s fifteenth anniversary, and that showed. It might even be fair to say that, with a less rigorous schedule and many fewer dates in each of those years, this band has more room to grow as a unit than the mothership itself. Trey has long since been at a point in his career where he can do what he wants, and TAB gives him even more freedom to be as eccentric and humorous as he wants to be. From the Honey Boo Boo jokes to the inspired cover of Bob Marley’s “Small Axe”, this second night of the Capitol run showed a band and a leader comfortable with where they are and thoroughly enjoying the tunes they had to offer.  The set included some less-played numbers like “Greyhound” and “Words to Wanda”, and of course, some songs from Trey’s new record, Traveler, including our favorite, “Valentine.” Three of us from the nyctaper crew attended the show, and I think it’s fair to say a good time was had by all.

The Capitol Theatre is a welcome new (re-)addition to the NYC-area venue scene. The site of some legendary Grateful Dead shows has been lovingly restored to its former glory, with the added bonus of a friendly, competent and cool staff.  We wish the new venue well and hope to return soon.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 microphones from the official taper section of the venue, joined by Johnny Fried Chicken Boy and hi and lo.  While the Capitol asks that we keep mic stands fairly low – meaning closer to chatty audience members – we found the sound in the spot to be nearly flawless, and the resulting recording reflects the theater’s fine acoustics and the outstanding effort’s of Trey’s FOH team. Enjoy!

Trey Anastasio Band: February 22, 2011 Terminal 5 – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

Despite how “jambands” seem to invoke the ire of quite a few people, it can’t be ignored that they attract a zealous following.  Bolstered by excellent musicianship and great songwriting, Phish has arguably been at the top of this genre for a long time and are able to sell out nearly every arena-sized (and larger) venue they play in.  That’s why it’s nice when the individual members indulge in their side projects, allowing them to kick back and play the smaller places like they did before becoming a multi-million dollar juggernaut.  I hadn’t been to a Phish concert for the better part of two decades when a few friends literally dragged me to see frontman Trey Anastasio last year.  It turned out to be a stellar gig and good enough to make me dip my toes back into the pond, so to speak.  With his return to Terminal 5 this year, there was no way I was going to miss it and it turned out to be money well spent.  Delving into the extensive catalog of material from his main band and solo jaunts, Trey and company split the performance into acoustic and electric sets, playing a lot of favorites and a few inspired, and some surprising, covers.  Judging by the great time the performers and the crowd were having, reinforced by the multiple sing-alongs during the course of the evening, I can understand why so many folks are continually drawn to them.

We recorded this show from the first balcony, nearly dead-center.  A few other people had the same idea and we had a blast turning the area into a taper’s section.  As with Phish, Trey Anastasio’s sound engineers are top-notch.  The house sound that night was superb and our recording reflects that.  Enjoy!
