Wrekmeister Harmonies: November 4, 2016 Trans-Pecos

There might not be a better time for us to post this show in light of Tuesday night’s horrific events. The new Wrekmeister Harmonies album Light Falls is a meditation on the struggle against all odds to overcome evil. Inspired by Primo Levi’s writings about his time at Auschwitz, Levi’s anti-fascist resistance fighter model of fortitude and resolve is perhaps an extremely apt guide for us all at present. For the album, Wrekmeister’s J.R. Robinson and Esther Shaw added some gravitas to the proceedings by inviting three members of Godspeed You! Black Emperor to perform on the record. The result is a profoundly moving musical piece that explores the emotional ebbs and flows while on the ledge of life and death surrounded by pure evil — 1944 becomes 2016.

Wrekmeister Harmonies came East last week for a special show at Trans-Pecos, hosted by AdHoc, before leaving for a lengthy tour of Europe in November and December. The live band did include along with J.R. and Esther, the drummer Tim Herzog from Godspeed, Dana Schechter (Insect Ark) on lap steel, and Martin Farmer on bass. The set was one full uninterrupted suite consisting of the entire Light Falls album with three non-album tracks interspersed within the suite. However the focus was not on individual pieces but the performance as a whole — a profound use of light and dark, peace and anger, and subtlety and cacophony to draw out emotions very rarely felt while viewing a musical performance. Wrekmeister Harmonies is a unit not to be missed, and while they are in Europe we recommend playing Light Falls and this performance loudly and often.

I recorded this set with the usual setup in this venue, Schoeps at stage lip mixed with a board feed. Chris did a superb job mixing the band and the room sound was outstanding. The result is we feel a superb recording that accurately captures this moving music. Enjoy!

YVETTE owned the stage on this night at Market Hotel, preparing the crowd for HEALTH with their enveloping, dark, and percussive sound that seems like it won’t let you go. Since 2013’s Process we’ve seen YVETTE grow and evolve as a band, as they’ve continued to gestate new material before rapt live audiences. Between our Hopscotch encounter with them in 2014 to a Trans-Pecos show in 2015, they’ve continued to develop new and exciting ways to get under our skin, including a couple of new songs on this night that we hadn’t heard before (one so new it lacks a title). Likewise, the Market made sense for this band and the one it followed, with the room’s layout literally narrowing the focus to the lone duo up front, backlit and relentless. Noah Kardos-Fein and drummer Dale Eisinger have always maintained a certain economy to their shows, foregoing most chatter in favor of weaving their set into a continuous flow. It feels like time for a new record, which they’ve continued to work on, especially as Process predates Eisinger’s time in the band. We can’t wait to hear it.

I recorded this set with the mounted AT 4051 cardiods an a flawless soundboard feed from house engineer Jason. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Disappears: February 20, 2016 Baby’s All Right (incl. complete set of David Bowie’s “Low”)

Let’s get this out of the way: this is not some thrown-together “tribute”; Disappears had this idea long before Bowie’s recent passing. You can hear the evidence on their 2015 live LP, in fact (which you can still find if you look), which captures their full performances at Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art as part of a “Bowie Changes” series of events. Given what’s happened since, this Brooklyn redux of that memorable night took on new meaning, and showed us so much of what to appreciate about live rock music, and Bowie, who was one of the best.

Baby’s All Right was its typical self on Saturday night, a convivial hub for Williamsburg partiers and people of good musical taste. Disappears’ crowd was one of the better ones, composed mainly of the band’s regulars, scenesters and Bowie diehards interested in hearing the band’s take. Disappears’ material usually draws more comparisons to Joy Division and the Fall than the Thin White Duke, but only if you forget that Bowie had his own krautrock streak, evidenced on Station to Station as well as Low itself, a dissonant, dark piece of work that added to Bowie’s mystique as a musical chameleon whose taste rarely missed.

Before any Bowie, of course, Disappears had a full set for us of their own material, kicking off with the propulsive “Joa” followed by “Another Thought” and “I/O,” also from last year’s excellent Irreal, they decided to play some new material. Of these, my favorite might be “Silencing,” a mid-tempo meditation that continues in Irreal’s more subdued, textured vein but goes further down that path. Brian Case and bandmates Damon Carruesco, Jonathan van Herik, and Noah Leger (I’ve said this before, but damn can this guy drum) not only form one of the tightest units in music today, but they carry themselves with an understated poise that you wish you saw more often. Disappears is a band best seen from the front row, where you can watch both Case’s kinetic vocal delivery and get the full effect of the hammering of the drums and slink of the bass, urging on the dual guitars. This recording was made from onstage, making it about the closest thing to that experience.

Of course, everyone wants to know about the Bowie set. There are umpteen “tributes” going on these days, many of them hastily arranged for a quick buck and/or nostalgia jolt, and some of the highest-profile events to date have either reeked of gimmickry or have simply fallen flat. Disappears’ move was not only refreshing because it actually wasn’t a “response” to the artist’s passing, but because it took the most direct route: playing a Bowie album with an obvious relationship to Disappears’ vision. It’s the best kind of tribute, one that honored Bowie by letting his music, alongside Disappears’ own, speak for itself.

Most striking about Low as a live set is how distinct the album is to the LP format, with a clear side A of somewhat more conventional rock tracks followed by the dramatic shift of the Eno-driven side B, a languid, ambient affair that felt much farther afield than the rest of the set. That Disappears not only held our attention, but managed to recreate this album live without many of the electronics that defined the album, testifies to their skill as a band. Similarly, side B isn’t exactly a party-rock record, but for this crowd, “Warszawa” and “Art Decade” weren’t going to clear the room; the crowd tightened in, holding on for the surge of “Weeping Wall,” whose operatic sweep might’ve made you think, had you closed your eyes, that it was Godspeed You! Black Emperor up there making noise with its gaggle of musicians, not four guys. “Subterraneans” made for a subdued ending after that obvious climax, but once again, Disappears gave it the attention it deserved, straight through to the end.

While this Low performance won’t be the only one of the tour, there are only a few others scheduled, interspersed among the band’s regular tour schedule. You can catch the band Monday in Philly, and Tuesday in Pittsburgh (where they’ll do Low again).

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK22 open cardiod microphones onstage for an expansive, up front sound, combined with a soundboard feed of Disappears’ FOH Jason Balla’s mix, with assistance from Harrison Fore of Baby’s in setting it up. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Godspeed You! Black Emperor: September 30, 2015 Music Hall of Williamburg – Flac/MP3/Streaming

A month ago we posted Godspeed You! Black Emperor’s performance at the Hopscotch Festival. It was a strange night for acidjack — as the outdoor venue and the pouring rain created a surreal experience for GYBE show. As a nice bookend of the Canadian band’s month-long tour of the US East coast, we caught one of the NYC appearances at the intimate Music Hall of Williamsburg on Wednesday (they also played Terminal 5 and Warsaw last week).

The MHOW show was more a “traditional” GYBE show as the band’s projectionist was able to provide a stunning backdrop to the thematic post-rock being orchestrated from the stage. Additionally, the venue was the perfect size for an attentive crowd — there was virtually no chatter and the audience was fully engaged in the show. The result was virtually the perfect concert experience. If so inclined, it was literally possible to get lost in the music, as GYBE played straight through without a break and the show flowed flawlessly. This show lasted well over two hours, but if you were engaged in the music the time was immaterial. The GYBE setlist was fairly consistent with the shows of this tour with a “Hope Drone” opener and a complete run through the band’s new album Asunder, Sweet And Other Distress included. This particular show also added “Gathering Storm” early in the set and late in the show featured one of the two new songs that have appeared on this tour. The show closed with twenty-minutes of “The Sad Mafioso” that faded into a long drone where each of the band members exited the stage before guitarist Efrim Menuck returned to the stage to turn off all of the amps and end the night. It was a subtle closing of a very intense evening but seemed completely apt.

Godspeed’s US tour is complete, but the band will spend the next six weeks touring throughout Europe, dates here.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps set up on the floor inside of a nook at the front of the soundboard booth. The sound in the venue was superb and this recording captures it equally well. Enjoy!

Godspeed You! Black Emperor: September 10, 2015 Hopscotch Music Festival (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Godspeed You! Black Emperor shows are always meditative affairs, where you allow the band’s long instrumental sequences to draw you in, slowly, bombarding you with projected images against the backdrop of a black room. It’s an entirely different experience when that backdrop is of limited size, and the dark room is replaced with the downtown plaza of Raleigh, NC, lit by streetlamps and neon signs from Jimmy John’s and the local Marriott. In that environment, how can you concentrate on something like this? Can it resonate?

Perhaps nature provided the best way, in the form of a downpour that blanketed the plaza in the early going, its sheets of rain and gusts driving away the merely-curious until only the die-hards were left. Absent the excess conversations, forced to reckon with whether this show was worth it under the circumstances, those who stayed answered their own question. GSYBE shows are events; their music isn’t for everyone, and they don’t make any effort to make things otherwise. So, as I held onto my mic stand to keep it and the umbrella covering it from blowing over (which you can hear it doing at one point), I thought about the level of commitment this band requires, and how, as was the case when we covered their NYC run in 2011, they are, in fact, always worth it. Even if you can’t ignore that this setting will never be considered ideal.

This was the kickoff headlining set of Hopscotch Music Festival, and as befits GSYBE, it started with a slow drone, not a bang. After the so-called “Hope Drone,” we were were treated to the band’s entire latest album, Asunder, Sweet and Other Distress (my, how these people love punctuation), a four-song sequence the band refers to on setlists as “Behemoth.” Next up came a new number that is as-yet untitled, followed by two classics, “Moya” from the Slow Riot for New Zero Kanada EP and “The Sad Mafioso” from F? A? ?. If the stage was small, the band’s sweep and ambition remained titanic, as evidenced by the soaring guitars of the new number, whose sustained early peak and soaring conclusion felt like a respite from the rain itself. The attentive, soaking crowd clustered around the stage, keeping the between-song cheering polite and minimal, in keeping with the subtlety of the songs’ transitions. Once things came to a head, though, as “The Sad Mafioso” sprinted toward its stormy conclusion, the shouts began, and sustained, until long after the band had disappeared from stage, leaving that little space empty, their sound only a memory in the night’s new void.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones under an umbrella-covered mic stand directly in front of the soundboard. Other than the usual effects of distance and being outdoors, the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Suuns: February 28, 2015 Rough Trade – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Suuns seem to have almost grown into the current moment, what with their reliance on atmospheric electronics to put a new spin on Joy Division-y guitar rock. We first saw the band in 2011, at south Brooklyn’s tiny-but-sweet Rock Shop, where they proved themselves ready for more. On this night at Rough Trade, coming off their second proper album, Images du Futur, Suuns gave an assured, dialed-in performance. The bill co-featured Chicagoans Disappears, and the pair made a perfect match, with Suuns’ own slow evolution on display right after their contemporaries’. The band’s live approach is an even slower burn than their albums, built together from segue elements that don’t appear on the records, allowing sounds to linger for extra minutes. There wasn’t an encore break on this night, so much as a break in the action while the last notes held on, waiting for the band’s return. Coming from one of the world’s most acclaimed music cities (Montreal), perhaps it’s not surprising that Suuns put so much effort into their live show. Though Images du Futur is still what they’re touring, the band has already moved beyond it, playing four new songs, three of which I believe are tentatively titled “Delay”, “Resistance” and “Pray” (the fourth is anyone’s guess). If those new songs are any guide, Suuns intend to keep doing what they’re doing, only getting better at it over time. It’s no shock that the crowd got most into Images’ strongest track, “2020”, but there were plenty of other good moments, including the closer on “Edie’s Dream”, a hypnotic, almost-pretty song amidst the dark tones in the band’s catalog.

Suuns are off the road for now, but be sure to catch them next time they’re through. It’ll be worth it.

Sannhet: February 27, 2015 Saint Vitus – FLAC/MP3/Streaming/Video

Nobody can quite figure out how to categorize Sannhet. The two touchstones that get thrown around are “post rock” and “black metal”, but neither is a perfect fit. While virtually every second of their set is heavier than, say, the heavy parts of an Explosions in the Sky song, their all-instrumental music nonetheless features more tonal and textural shifts and structural variation than a full-on black metal band. It really doesn’t matter what you call it, in the end. They’re just phenomenally good, as we first pointed out two years ago.

Sannet just released a new record, Revisionist, which was hailed by no less than the New York Times. Experiencing this set at Saint Vitus last Friday — even if just an opening one — we got a glimpse of what was coming on the record, at the kind of full force and volume only possible in the live setting. Sannhet pummeled through a good chunk of Revionist, plus some older tracks, in less than forty minutes, and it was a dense, emotional ride. Although the band’s set was relentless, there were peaks of intensity even within the surge, when you almost could not imagine drummer Christopher Todd hitting harder, or guitarist John Refano and bassist AJ Annunziata’s fingers keeping time with him. But they did, hurtling through standout tracks like “You Thy__” and the closer “Enemy Victorian”. Coupled with flickering visuals programmed by Annunziata, Sannhet delivered a visceral experience that lingered long after they left the stage. In the NYT review, writer Ben Ratliff called Revisionist “an album for motivation, for the all-day victory”. Perhaps it’s the sound of a band at the height of its powers, who knows they’ve got your attention. They’ll be keeping ours.

This Will Destroy You: February 27, 2015 Saint Vitus – FLAC/MP3/Streaming/Video

This Will Destroy You, of San Marcos, TX, just crossed the decade mark as a band last year, with the excellent record Another Language. In the broad sense, they share company with the dynamic instrumental bands that get lumped together as “post-rock” — Mogwai, Explosions In the Sky, Caspian, etc. But if this two-night stand of shows presented by BrooklynVegan at Saint Vitus proved anything, it’s that they don’t let labels stop them. Saint Vitus, best-known as NYC’s destination for the heaviest of heavy music, made a good fit for the band, as they led off with the thunderous “Little Smoke” that pummeled us from start to finish. TWDY may not be a black metal band, but their sonics are definitely toward the darker end of the spectrum, a kind of soundtrack to the end of the world.

But just when you think you’re going to get nothing but 80 minutes of soft-loud dynamics and blaring guitars, TWDY changes things up. Bursts of electronics seep in, between the ratcheting drumbeats and the mournful guitars of “A Three-Legged Workhorse”. Or there’s “Grandfather Clock”, basically a full-on IDM track, followed by the texturally dense standout track from Another Language, “Dustism”. But if the band proved there was more to them than just getting loud, when they were loud, they made it count, as on the climax to “Black Dunes” or “There Are Some Remedies Worse Than The Disease”. This show ran a touch longer than the previous night’s effort, closing with the ironically-titled “Quiet”. This burner of a Friday night show had been anything but.

Some bands seem born for big stages, fueled by theatrics and spectacle. I first saw Glasgow’s Mogwai opening for Pavement in 1997. Back then, drunks in the audience made stupid jokes about kilts and wondered aloud why their songs didn’t have any words. Their music had grand sweep — that much was obvious — but their style was still something foreign, hard to imagine outstretching those humble confines, no matter how good it was. Today, this music has become the stuff of soundtracks, more familiar. The difference in Mogwai and many acts that followed is that they not only helped start the trend, but their output defined it. Mogwai have never been simple shillers of the soft-loud dynamic, not even since their early work on Young Team. The band on stage on this night, playing material from their latest release Rave Tapes, has grown in the 14 years since that first show I saw. First through remix albums, and later in their main body of work, the band kept with the times, incorporating a greater degree of electronica and kraut rock into their repertoire. Rave Tapes is the furthest they have taken that aesthetic, with an exclamation point put on that choice by their choice of opening act, the Pittsburgh-based electronic composer Majeure. What hasn’t changed since the beginning is the band’s kindness to their fans, and the quality and depth of their work. Mogwai, like the sci-fi creature for which they’re named, are an ever-evolving, fearsome beast.

As with some of the West Coast and European shows we’ve seen popping up on the Internet, this set surveyed the band’s entire career right from the get-go, from the one-two punch of the Rave Tapes song “Heard About You Last Night” followed by “Friend of the Night” from Mr. Beast and Rock Action‘s “Friend of the Night”, then all the way back to the Ten Rapid days for tour favorite “Ithica 27/9”. New York has always held a special place in the band’s collective heart, with the band’s three-night stand at the intimate Music Hall of Williamsburg having served as the site for the band’s live album, Special Moves (two of which shows we recorded). Despite the big light show and the distance between us, this still felt like one of those intimate nights in the many smaller venues they’ve played on the way here. Their beautiful noise closed the distance.

Together with hi and lo and Johnny Fried Chicken Boy, I recorded this set from our usual spot in the venue, with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones pointed at the stacks, placed on an extension pole almost directly over Mogwai’s engineer’s head. What you’re hearing on this recording is almost exactly what he heard. Enjoy!

Cloud Becomes Your Hand: March 14, 2014 Northern Spy / Ba Da Bing SXSW Showcase (Austin, TX) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The visual you’re seeing above is the members of Cloud Becomes Your Hand, gathered on the floor to perform a ritualistic outro dance as their instruments, still on stage, tick down the final minutes of their bonanza of a South By Southwest set. Of all the bands who played the Northern Spy / Ba Da Bing showcase this year, it was CBYH that I perhaps looked forward to the most. Their latest record, Rocks or Cakes, released in February, is a delightful dose of avant-prog weirdness that finds itself throwing traditional song structures out the window, or fucking with pop sounds so hard you don’t know what to make of them. The band’s electronic sounds are made not by a MacBook Pro, but by live instruments, some that I have to assume were custom-designed for the band’s purposes. Where CBYH succeeds and other bands fail, in part, is that their songs are actually good in addition to being “weird”; amid the layers of sounds are also melodies for you to latch onto, as on the standout track “Sand of Sea”, streaming below. This set found the band giving us most of Rocks or Cakes, and the songs were all the more impressive to see live. We expect to see great things from this Brooklyn-based band; don’t miss them when they’re back on the road.

I recorded this set in the same manner as my other recordings this night, with Schoeps MK4V microphones in the optimum position hanging over the crowd and a soundboard feed. The sound quality of this particular set is the best of the night, and is outstanding. Enjoy!
