The Vibekillers: September 12, 2015 Hopscotch Music Festival (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

I guess you have to call Raleigh, NC’s The Vibekillers a bar band — their most frequent haunt is, after all, Slim’s in downtown Raleigh, which is a bar. But give a listen to this set, and see that they are so much more than that. And, despite their protestations to the contrary, they make the vibes just fine, thank you. These guys are real players; for example, frontman Chip Robinson hails from the legendary Raleigh band The Backsliders and Skillet Gilmore, the drummer was in Whiskeytown. Hopscotch Music Festival has always respected the local scene, and having this crew kick off the main stage on the festival’s final night was the perfect way to do that. This set consists of well-rendered covers for the most part, including an outstanding version of Dylan’s “I & I” and The Jim Carroll Band’s “The People Who Died.” The festival’s final night had just begun, but the vibe was already right.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed and Audio Technica 4051 microphones. The sound quality is reflective of being outdoors, but is overall quite good. Enjoy!

Nocona: August 28, 2015 The Gutter – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Correspondent Rich Cuiffo writes: “Nocona is about energy, a rock band with history. They draw their roots in country, folk, punk, and rock. They take the psychedelia of the 13th Floor Elevators and mash it up with the Bakersfield sound – Roky and Buck; Love and the Burrito Brothers. The mix of all these eclectic tastes – art and twang and punk and family – comes together to bring a distinct style that takes risks and delivers a sound unlike any other artist today. Their free spirit is evident in up-tempo tunes and infectious hooks with honesty, written by lead vocalist and guitarist Chris Isom.

While several band members have lived and gigged in NYC over the years, Venice, California is where they currently hang their hats.  I’ve been fortunate to spend the last couple of years with them at SXSW in Austin the always dig hearing them live. This was their debut NYC performance with an awesome show of support from friends both old and new.  In typical family style, this gig was a Kickstarter kickoff for old friend and local luthier, Jay Braun, whose Brooklyn Instruments is moving into full production of smart, affordable instruments in a small, local shop using renewable, salvaged and repurposed materials. To learn more about this great cause please visit this site.

Clocking in at around and hour, this set delivered a mix of old and new songs featuring most of their new album Long Gone Song.  Hope you all enjoy this band as much as me and will come out to see them next time they come through.”

Law$uits: September 1, 2015 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

September 9, 2015
By

IMG_2962

The Brooklyn band Law$uits (not to be confused with nyctaper alumni and Philadelphia indie faves The Lawsuits) stormed Union Pool on top of a noisy four-act bill, and gave us a high-octane dose of exactly what we’d been waiting for. Theirs is a to-the-gut, dissonant style of punk rock that recalls the foundational acts of the 80s and 90s like the Jesus Lizard and Big Black. If the music seethes, propelled by prominent bass in the mix to drive the groove under lead guitarist James Browning’s skillful work, it also sneers with an intelligence that this kind of music isn’t always accused of. If you want to just stand there and bang your head, fine, but if you pay more attention, you might notice these are smart tunes, too, the kind that don’t need to cover up bad playing with schtick or shock. The band has one record out, 2014’s Future Failure, and judging by this setlist, there’s more on the way, as several of these tunes aren’t on that album. We’ll be looking forward to hearing more from them, hopefully soon.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41V supercardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from Union Pool engineer Chris Madden. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Obnox
[Photo by Jason House, I’m Just Here For the Bands]

Last year’s Louder Space wasn’t so much a breakthrough album for Obnox as it was a perfect distillation of Lamont Bim Thomas’ prolific garage-punk/hip-hop outfit. If the juxtaposition of those two genres gives you pause, fear not: Thomas is equally comfortable whether he’s doing an MC5-inspired cover of Neil Young’s “Ohio” or namechecking Mary J. Blige. He’s followed up Louder Space this year with the excellent Boogalou Reed (on 12XU) and the just-released Know America (on Ever/Never Records), an airwaves-takeover-style concept record. And in case I didn’t sufficiently highlight the word “prolific,” he’s got another record coming Ever/Never later this year. Even with this wealth of new material, last week’s Obnox set from Cake Shop (currently celebrating their ten-year anniversary) is packed with hits from the deepest reaches of their discography: “How to Rob (The Punk Years),” “Molecule,” “Mecca Son Shine,” and “Red I” from Louder Space; “Dough” and the title track from the “Smoke Woody Haze” EP; “Being Cleveland” from the double LP Corrupt Free Enterprise. The newer tracks are “Loudpack” and “Grease” from Know America, and “Watching You” from Boogalou Reed. Meanwhile, “Carmen, I Love You” is out digitally but a vinyl issue seems imminent. Some technical troubles prevented Thomas from playing guitar for the bulk of the set, but what’s missed in his distorted guitar work is more than made up for by his on-point vocal delivery and best-in-the-business stage banter.

I recorded this set with a pair of AKGs set up at the stage lip and a pair of Church Audio cards positioned to pick up the monitors. Very special thanks to Cake Shop’s engineer Jeff, who made this recording possible by helping me out with a loaner stand. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Obits: November 22, 2014 Brooklyn Night Bazaar – FLAC/MP3/Full Set Streaming

We pointed out in a review of Obits four years ago that “there is something universal about Obits’ gritty garage guitar roots-rock, and when its delivered by four pros with impressive veteran resumes” and indeed, that was brought home at the Brooklyn Night Bazaar as the band closed, rather than opened (as in that old review), a show stacked with impressive bands (three of which have been posted so far). Obits do promise the musicianship of grizzled vets while maintaining the devil-may-care attitude that defines their genre. This show surveyed all of the band’s recent catalog, capping with an absolutely awesome cover of Willie Nelson’s “Milk Cow Blues”. Lucky for everyone involved, the bazaar’s attendees knew that artisanal scarves and handmade jewelry were the wrong thing to focus on during this set. A rock show like this demands attention, and it earned it.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Survival Knife recording. While the room presented some challenges, the sound is still quite good. Enjoy!

Big Ups: November 2, 2014 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

BigUps-Graffiti-DannyKrug

For budding music nerds, discovering the Touch & Go catalog is an eye-opening experience. I have to imagine Big Ups enjoyed a similarly formative exploration of that catalog. They pair the post-hardcore sound of bands like The Jesus Lizard and Shellac with strikingly direct lyrics that narrate the indignities of everyday life. Joe Galarraga’s frenetic vocals are tempered by the tightly wound trio of Brendan Finn, Amar Lal, and Carlos Salguero. As a unit, the band mines the tenuous territory that lies between frenzy and control, managing to teeter on the edge of chaos without retreating to the comfort of complacency—no small feat when you take a look around.

And so despite the Sunday evening opening slot, Big Ups wasted no time in challenging the crowd to shake off any post-Daylight Saving grogginess with an intense thirty-minute set at Mercury Lounge comprised of selections off their debut album Eighteen Hours of Static, the two tracks from their upcoming Exploding in Sound split 7”, and a handful of new songs. Set-opener “Justice” is a wakeup call in which Galarraga wails with conviction, “Everybody says it’s getting better all the time, but it’s bad, still bad.” It’s a convincing argument with the songs that follow as its supporting evidence. Yet the songs refuse to give in or give up, convinced that it should and can get better. While not a dramatic stylistic departure from the earlier material, the duo “Rash” and “Not Today” (both out now on a split 7” with Washer) represents their most realized songs yet. If these two tracks are any indication of Big Ups’ future direction, there may be hope after all.

I recorded this set from our usual location in the venue, with a soundboard feed from the Mercury Lounge FOH, Dave Lefcort. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Hungry Ghost: November 22, 2014 Brooklyn Night Bazaar – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

December 4, 2014

Eric PH reports

What do the drummers of veteran indie rock acts do when that band breaks up? They start new bands of course. But there’s a steep challenge to success for drummers, who are usually buried behind large kits, heard more often than seen. Since breaking up in 2002, Unwound has splintered into Survival Knife (featuring guitarist-vocalist Justin Trosper and original Unwound drummer Brandt Sandeno) and Hungry Ghost, the guitar and drums duo of Andrew Price, formerly of Irving Klaw Trio, and ex-Unwound drummer, Sara Lund. While Survival Knife soldiers on with a sound that bears forward Unwound’s post-hardcore, Hungry Ghost breaks that mold and tends more towards blues-rock territory. You wouldn’t be too far off in comparing Hungry Ghost to Quasi—another duo that features a veteran indie rock drummer, Janet Weiss. (And indeed, the other half of Quasi, Sam Coomes, produced Hungry Ghost’s first album.) Still, Sara Lund’s unmistakable drumming combined with great songwriting ensures that Unwound devotees will find a lot to love about Hungry Ghost.

Price and Lund have been playing together as Hungry Ghost since at least 2009, so we were psyched to finally catch them in Brooklyn at the last stop on their tour with Survival Knife and Pink Avalanche. For this set, the band performs mostly new material, drawing on only a few songs from their 2012 self-titled, self-released debut record. Price and Lund share vocal duties throughout and you can’t help but note the equality of the collaboration, the guitar and drums in conversation with each other and the vocal harmonies as the meeting ground between the two performers. After a particularly rollicking performance of “Get Up,” Lund comments that audience air-drummers are the highest form of praise a drummer can receive. Their entire set from Brooklyn Night Bazaar is proof that praise is well-deserved.

As with Acidjack’s recording of Survival Knife from the same night, I recorded this with the mics inside the soundboard cage and a feed of the soundboard, plus onstage mics, from the house engineer Kenny. Despite the non-traditional venue, the sound is excellent. Air-drum away!

The Prettiots: October 23, 2014 NYCTaper Unofficial CMJ Day Party, Cake Shop – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Set

The Prettiots are that practiced sound of not giving a fuck. The New York trio, comprised of Kay Kasperhauser, Lulu Prat and Rachel Trachtenburg play songs that touch on many of the woes of a woman in late teenhood to her early twenties — boys, high school, self-loathing, etc. and they do so with an endearing, off-the-cuff stance that makes you almost not notice another important fact about them. The secret sauce of the Prettiots is not only that ukulele that Kasperhauser busts out, but that they can actually play. Trachtenburg has a long history as a musician dating back to childhood and the band Supercute!, of which Prat was also a member. If the songs feel, as Lucky put it, like “an epic sleepover”, they’re also executed with a kind of professionalism that bands whose promo flyers include pictures of butts and orthodontic retainers don’t always have. The Prettiots are especially well-traveled in the press for a band with not yet an album to their name, having made several swings through the blogosphere and actual print. This day show at Cake Shop was packed from start to finish — ABC News was even in the house filming the band for Taxi TV — and after the raunchy opener, a cover of Miguel’s “Pussy is Mine”, it wasn’t hard to tell why. These girls are indeed “adorable”, and their songs like “Stabler” and “Kinski” have a habit of sticking around long after the show is over.

I recorded this set as with the other recordings of the day, with Schoeps MK4V microphones at the stage lip and a soundboard feed from the house engineer Clint. The sound is outstanding. Enjoy!

The Gradients: September 5, 2014 Shea Stadium Interview/FLAC/MP3/Streaming

gradients_webster_StephenBalser
[Photo from the Studio at Webster Hall show by Stephen Balser, as featured on the band’s facebook page]

The night of their self-titled and debut record release at Shea Stadium, Emilio Herce sat down with The Gradients, comprised of Charlie DY, Sammy Weissberg, Luca Ba, and J Boxer, to talk to us about their song writing process, touring down to SXSW, and the DIY ethic they bring to their live shows. Featured with this interview is a full live set for streaming and download. You can catch The Gradients’ next show at Palisades this Thursday.

NYCTaper: All of you play in different bands. Do you ever had a moment when you’re writing a song, but you decided, ‘hey, maybe I want to save it for this other band’”?

Sammy: Not for me, this is the only band I write music in. I also play in Bluffing and Le Rug. But Bluffing’s all John.

J. Boxer (John): Nah, I definitely know. There’s definitely stuff that I write where I’m like ‘this would be really weird for Gradients.’

NYCT: The Gradients have four songwriters, most bands have only one or two, so how does the song writing process work? Does everyone have equal input, or does someone bring in a skeleton and then lead in the process of building it?

Luca Ba: I mean, usually one or two people will have an individual thing that they bring in.

NYCT: Like a riff? Do you ever bring in a complete song?

Luca: Some people have.

Charlie: A lot of times it’s a song that gets changed, like as a band we’ll work on it. Also it’s funny that you say that cause like, we have a lot of trouble naming our songs, and a lot of the time they wind up being labeled as whoever brought it in, like ‘Sammy New,’ or ‘Charlie New,’ or ‘Luca New,’ ‘John New,’ but I wouldn’t say that any of those songs truly belong to that person.

Sammy: I think in this band you can’t really bring in a song, and like anything is subject to change. Every song I’ve brought in has basically just ended up different.

NYCT: You guys are releasing a four track EP, each of you writing one song. Are those songs written yet, are you still working on them?

Sammy: We’re playing two of them tonight. One is pretty close to being done. I guess the fourth one we haven’t even started yet.

Charlie: Mine is in the lab.

NYCT: At what point do you feel comfortable performing a song. When it’s fleshed out entirely?

Luca: I think often it’s not.

NYCT: So the writing process happens on stage too.

J Boxer: We know we’re not playing it the way it’s going to be, the finished product or whatever, and there’s kind fear or nervousness about it, but that’s what you have to do.

Sammy: Just play it over and over again, that’s kind of how I write songs anyway. Usually when I write something, I play it every day, like multiple times a day and over a long period of time things start to develop. I think that repetition is a good way to develop ideas, if you just have it in your ear.

J Boxer:  I feel good about the two new ones that we have.

Charlie: The first show that we ever played as a band, way before John was in the band, we got offered a show and we weren’t ready, but we just played it.  We were just like ‘why not, we were going to open the show.’ It came together on stage, and I feel like that vibe carried out into our band in general. You know a lot of times, like honestly, we’ll play a song, and the lyrics aren’t completely finished, but they’ll even grow from what we come up with, when we play it.

NYCT: Was this years South By your first tour experience as a band? How was that?

Luca: We became a family with the other members of Bluffing, Heeney and Slonk Donkerson. I’d say that those four bands are joined forever.

Charlie: It was a pretty magical time in Austin. I mean it was a great experience, and we played a lot of great shows, but it really almost felt like a musical vacation.

Sammy: It wasn’t the most organized show.

Charlie: The last tour we went on was like totally just you know play, go to the next place.  Austin, we played a bunch of shows getting down there, and we got to Austin an we kind of went nuts. A lot of bonding and hanging out.

NYCT: Are you going to do anything differently in the studio this time around? Did you learn anything last time, that you’re not going to do this time, or is there anything that you’re going to bring over from the last record?

Luca: Ideally it won’t take as long to come out, I would say.

Sammy: I think I learned a lot about overdubs, like what sounds good, and what doesn’t and I couldn’t really explain it any more than that, but there are things on the record that obviously bug me, so you’re not going to be totally satisfied.

Pujol: May 23, 2014 Death By Audio – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Pujol DBA

The last time we checked in with Pujol, it was more than two years ago at an impressive introduction to the band at the Impose SXSW show. At that point, Daniel and the band were previewing songs from the upcoming album UNITED STATES OF BEING, which was released a couple of months after SXSW. On Friday night at Death By Audio, Pujol returned to NYC to support the new album KLUDGE which was released a week ago. The album stretches the boundaries of Pujol’s punk/garage sound and adds a number of new ideas and influences. But the live set is a straightforward and energetic run through his catalog. At DBA, we heard about half the new album (“Circles” is streaming below), a democratic selection of older material, and even a few deep cuts. The takeaway from this show however is that Pujol continues to impress and given the evolution of his music we expect greater things for our next visit, which we hope doesn’t take another two years. The band’s tour continues into the Midwest and West coast throughout May and June, dates here.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards on a stand at the front and center of the stage and mixed it with a fine board feed mixed by Edan. The sound is superb, enjoy!
