Mountain Movers: June 10, 2018 Wonders of Nature

July 12, 2018
By

No longer just the home of white clam pizza, New Haven, Connecticut’s latest claim to fame is psych rock from the likes of Mountain Movers. The band’s latest self-titled slab is a dose of distorted guitars swirling around heavy grooves that, hey why not, probably go great with their hometown’s signature pie. Guitarist-singer Dan Greene has been at it for 10 years, but the current band with Rick Omonte on bass, Kryssi Battalene on lead guitar, and Ross Menze on drums have this thing really dialed-in. We caught the band a year ago at Union Pool and they’ve only gotten better since. This recording captures the band on the small stage at relatively new Brooklyn joint Wonders of Nature, opening for the heady Garcia Peoples. It features a couple tunes from that self-titled record plus a couple new ones, “Freeway” and the live staple “New Jam,” which is the subject of a forthcoming 12″ of the same title. Mountain Movers are currently touring with Howlin’ Rain and these are some absolute can’t-miss shows. In the NYC-area they’ve got Monty Hall on July 27 and Union Pool on July 28. We hope to see you there!

Garcia Peoples: June 10, 2018 Wonders of Nature

June 20, 2018
By

New Jersey-based Garcia Peoples have been turning local heads for little while now, but are poised for some major attention with their upcoming Beyond Beyond is Beyond debut, Cosmic Cash. The five-piece features Tom Malach and Danny Arakaki on guitars, Cesar Arakaki on drums, and Andy Cush on bass, plus the recently-joined P.G. Six on keyboards. With more than a passing resemblance to the Grateful Dead, Garcia Peoples trade in laid-back slacker jams and good vibes. Do head over to Bandcamp and preorder Cosmic Cash now!

The band is in the midst of a four-week residency at Wonders of Nature. We caught them for the second in the series of shows on June 10th where they played us a few stretched out tunes from the album and a mind-bending finale jammer with Kryssi Battalene of Mountain Movers and Headroom. If you haven’t made it out to Wonders of Nature yet to see Garcia Peoples, never fear—they play this Sunday with Hans Chew and Prison & Pigeons. Don’t miss it!

Mind Over Mirrors: June 7, 2018 Brooklyn Bazaar (Northside Festival)

June 14, 2018

I’ve listened to Mind Over Mirrors’ latest double-LP, Bellowing Sun, a whole bunch since its early-April release—but it didn’t occur to me until halfway through this performance at Brooklyn Bazaar how much of a Cluster vibe it has going. The other thing that struck me was how dexterous each of the players was, taking on multiple instruments, often at the same time. The band is the same as last time we saw them, which is Jamie Fennelly joined by Janet Beveridge Bean, Jim Becker, Jon Mueller (I guess your first name needs to start with J to join the Mirrors—my loss there). Bellowing Sun is a little unusual in the Mirrors’ catalog as its the result of a commission from Chicago’s Museum of Contemporary Art. The piece as it was performed in Chicago this past April was accompanied by a multimedia sculpture and light installation which, if the pictures are any indication, was pretty damn cool. Jamie says there is a possibility of bringing the entire experience on the road. But for now, we got to hear the entire Bellowing Sun played live at Brooklyn Bazaar last week. I can’t even describe how amazing it is to see four musicians pull off this complex, layered performance, so I won’t: the music speaks for itself.

Thanks to the Brooklyn Bazaar staff for their hospitality. The new venue sounds great and we hope to be back soon. Enjoy!

Dommengang: May 31, 2018 Union Pool

June 10, 2018
By

L.A.’s Dommengang have returned after a three-year absence with a new record and accompanying live dates. On their second record, Love Jail, the band trades in the instrumental psych typified on Everybody’s Boogie for their own brand of mustache rock. Moreso even than the Sunset Strip vibes Dommengang channel throughout the LP, Love Jail conjures the aura of the 1975 private press LP from Minnesota band Highway. Most of all, Love Jail is a lot of fun, something you can roll down the windows and blast. If you find yourself in southwest next month (or just feel like you need a road trip), be sure to catch the band opening a few dates for Stephen Malkmus and the Jicks.

Sunwatchers: April 20, 2018 The Bell House

May 21, 2018
By

Say, how ’bout those Sunwatchers? Since we last checked in, the boys released Sunwatchers II on Trouble in Mind, played a whole bunch of shows, and released a little live rarities tape (featuring a contribution by yours truly I might add). Yep, they’ve been busy and so have we: unfortunately we didn’t make it out for their record release show back in February or their recent NYC date on the Sunwatchers Motel Band tour. But we did catch this epic opening set for DC’s The Messthetics last month at the Bell House, which finds the band playing a bunch of sweet tunes from the new record, a couple new ones, and a fantastic cover of Sonny and Linda Sharrock’s “Sweet Butterfingers.” Can’t get enough of those Sunwatchers!

SAVAK: April 20, 2018 The Bell House

May 10, 2018
By

There really isn’t a lot of good, original indie rock coming out these days. Sorry to be the bearer of that bad news. But lucky for all, SAVAK aren’t good, they’re great. No, really: I dug Best of Luck in Future Endeavors for sure, but on their second record, the recently-released Cut-Ups, the band has really taken it up a notch or four (or at least enough to warrant all my hyperbole). Cut-Ups features some songs we’ve been listening to on the live circuit for a while now, like “Sick of War,” “They Are Bones,” and “I Don’t Want to be Defended.” But the SAVAK-ery  doesn’t stop there: the band’s got two even-more-recent 7″s up on Bandcamp that in my opinion represent their best material yet. I’ve made a formal request that the band integrate these new tracks into their live sets so we’ll see what we can make happen there. In the meantime, if you need even more newness, this set from last month at the Bell House features the so-new-no-one’s-heard-it-yet “Door Deals” that will have you asking about LP number three.

I recorded this from dead center, with the MBHO’s in DIN stereo configuration, combined with board feed from the Bell House FOH Travis. Geoff Sanoff provided the mastering. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Rhyton: April 27, 2018 Wonders of Nature

May 7, 2018
By

Here’s a wild one from New York’s masters of improvised psych, Rhyton, opening up for fellow heads Wet Tuna at Wonders of Nature. This set captures the trio—Dave Shuford, Jimy SeiTang, and Rob Smith—in full-on improvisational mode. The direction on these jams tends more to their recent easy-going Redshift material, which just so happens to be my favorite side of Rhyton. While their earlier, heavier stuff first caught my attention, it’s Redshift that I pull out most frequently when searching for the sound. In particular, it’s the set-ending and mind-bending closer of “The Owl’s Octave” into “Pharaonic Crosstalk” that scratches that itch for exploratory rock thats meanders and grooves. Rhyt-on!

Chuck Johnson: April 12, 2018 Union Pool

May 3, 2018
By

It’s been a while since we checked in with the great Chuck Johnson. Almost a year ago he put out the excellent Balsams for VDSQ, which finds Chuck experimenting with the pedal steel guitar and discovering some soothing ambient sounds along the way. You’ll hear some of that familiar twang from the instrument, but taken in a different and more subtle direction than maybe you’re used to. It’s been getting a ton of very deserved praise and anticipation was high for an in-person visit. For many of us New Yorkers, this Union Pool gig was our first chance to finally see Chuck perform live with the pedal steel, stopping off on his way to The Thousand Incarnations of the Rose festival. It was well worth the wait as we were treated to some deep listening in the form of a continuous thirty-minute stretch of pedal steel and effect pedal balladry.

Wet Tuna: April 27, 2018 Wonders of Nature

April 30, 2018
By

There are few things in the world more satisfying than Wet Tuna’s space-hazy folk. Matt and Pat have a rare chemistry that comes only after playing together some twenty-odd years. Wet Tuna are finally on the road for their first real tour (check out the full list of dates here) in support of Livin’ the Die. We caught their sold-out gig at new-ish Williamsburg spot, Wonders of Nature, a perfectly chill small room for the duo. Tune in for these exploratory jams and Wet Tuna will see you on that golden road.

Recorded front and center from the tapers pit with the MBHO’s in stereo XY configuration. The sound is killer. Enjoy!

The Messthetics: April 20, 2018 The Bell House

April 22, 2018
By

I guess you can’t really talk about the Messthetics without mentioning that the band features Fugazi’s rhythm section of Joe Lally on bass and Brendan Canty on drums, joined by jazz/experimental guitarist Anthony Pirog. But if you’re showing up to a Messthetics show looking for the second coming of Fugazi, you won’t be so much disappointed as woefully uninformed. Instead, you’ll find yourself in the midst of wrench-tight math rock, emphasis on the rock. Lally and Canty have been playing together pretty much forever at this point, and those guys don’t miss a beat. Pirog, a youngster in comparison, adds a fresh guitar sound to the mix, playing sometimes rhythmically and sometimes wildly. Their self-titled Dischord release is only a month old, but already the band brought with them four new songs in addition to playing the entirety of the album. They continue touring the U.S. through May, followed up by some Japan dates. Scope all those dates at the Dischord site.

I recorded this from dead center, with the MBHO’s in DIN stereo configuration, combined with board feed from the Bell House FOH Travis. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!
