A few weeks ago, the internet buzzed with discussion of “indie jam,” the term coined by Steven Hyden at Uproxx and referring, as many noted in response, to a constellation of bands advanced largely by Jeff Conklin on The Avant Ghetto. (We at NYCTaper are acknowledged by Hyden too, I’m obliged to mention.) In the article, musicians like Chris Forsyth (along with Garcia Peoples, Sunwatchers, Ryley Walker, William Tyler, and many others) are credited with “an inclination to meld all kinds of music — including indie, post-rock, folk, country, jazz fusion, and, yes, punk — and take it in adventurous and often improvised directions.”

“Indie jam”—or whatever you want to call it—surely wasn’t born in an out-of-the-way amphitheater in Raleigh, NC. But in September 2013, when we were first introduced to Forsyth’s far-out jams that were clearly referencing the Grateful Dead and Television, something was afoot. Is it time for us shrug off the legacy of Kurt Cobain’s distaste for the Dead and acknowledge the ongoing intersections of indie rock and jambands? Across the aisle, jamband fans are approaching the same questions, as the podcast Beyond the Pond seeks to introduce Phish fans to music outside the jamband ecosystem.

In the meantime, while the heads have been catching up to him, Chris Forsyth has released a series of increasingly great albums. The latest is All Time Present, in which Forsyth’s singular guitar playing weaves effortlessly between varied genres, from psych rock to, yes, even dance.

On Monday night we caught Forsyth’s Brooklyn record release show, appropriately opening for Träd, Gräs och Stenar. Joined by the latest edition of the Solar Motel Band, Peter Kerlin on bass and Ryan Jewell on drums, the trio play “Tomorrow Might as Well Be Today” and “Mystic Mountain” before being joined by Pat Gubler (P.G. Six/Wet Tuna) on keys for “Dream Song” and an absolutely epic performance of “Dreaming in the Non-Dream.” Returning the favor from last month’s Garcia Peoples record release show, the Solar Moteliers are joined by Tom Malach, Danny Arakaki, and Cesar Arakaki to complete the circle with “Techno Top.”

William Tyler: January 23, 2019 Rough Trade NYC

Howdy guitar-heads, and just-plain-old-heads! One of our favorite travelers, William Tyler, Goes West on his new LP, out now on Merge. He’s currently touring the U.S. into March and Europe in April, so do check out his full tour dates for your local gig. Here in NYC, Tyler appears at (Le) Poisson Rouge on February 26. It’s a sure bet he’ll be slinging some tunes old and new, so grab your tickets.

We got a lucky chance to hear Tyler preview the new album at Rough Trade NYC last month, as well as play some songs from Modern Country. In typical fashion he was nice and chatty, sharing some anecdotes between songs and being an all around positive guy. Meanwhile, Tyler also penned an essay about Cosmic Pastoral music for Aquarium Drunkard—more evidence that he’s one of the most interesting and thoughtful voices on instrumental guitar.

I recorded this set with the MBHO cardioids set up in stereo DIN configuration, combined with a board feed courtesy of Rough Trade FOH Jeremy Rychard Snyder. The sound is outstanding thanks to Jeremy and a quiet crowd. Enjoy!

Circuit des Yeux: November 15, 2017 Rough Trade NYC

Of all the many, many standout shows I’ve seen this year, Haley Fohr is responsible for two of them, both at Rough Trade NYC. There was the Jackie Lynn set from back in April, and now this full-band Circuit des Yeux burner from the current Reaching For Indigo tour. I’m a fan, obviously, but everyone I’ve talked to who saw this or another show from the tour have all been completely blown away. Fohr and her band play the album all the way through and even if you’ve fully absorbed the studio recordings you’ll be ecstatic to hear this ten-minute, rocking rendition of “A Story of This World Part II.” Circuit des Yeux hits the West Coast in January followed by some European dates in February—check all listings over at Drag City.

I recorded this from the soundboard cage with MBHOs combined with a board feed courtesy of FOH Dustin Myers. The sound is terrific. Enjoy!

Clearance: October 13, 2017 Rough Trade NYC

The Chicago band Clearance have been at it for a few years now, having first gained broader notice with a track debut from their current full-length, Rapid Rewards, on Stereogum. Various corners of the Internet have compared them to Pavement, having more (to this listener) to do with their wry sense of humor than their exact musical style, which falls into the broad camp of “indie rock” or “alt-rock” or “garage-rock” or whatever you want to call guitar-driven music that isn’t made by meatheads these days, but is delivered, at this stage, with a certain professionalism that wasn’t Pavement’s stock-in-trade until career end.

This set at Rough Trade NYC represents a solid eleven (with one additional that was aborted) song introduction to the band, including “You’ve Been Pre-Approved.” But among the set, I was most taken with the band’s latest single, “Are You Aware,” an upbeat burst of optimism that might fit less within the “ironic slacker” framework, but is just the dash of musical Prozac you want on a Friday after a wearying week. By the time the song downshifts in its final segment, you’re feeling the relaxation wash over you. We also got some new songs in the mix, including “Chances Are” and “Haven’t You Got the Time,” the latter of which has a bit more of a 90s Britpop feel than some of the band’s other songs. The band closed with the short-burst anthem “She’s A Peach,” which ended abruptly in under two minutes. At first it seemed like a mistake or a joke, but then it became clear — the song had said all it needed to say. Clearance are that kind of band.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Widowspeak set, with Schoeps MK5 microphones and a soundboard feed from Jeremy. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Widowspeak just released their fourth album, Expect the Best. It gave me a little jolt of nostalgia to see what’s now by any definition a veteran band taking the stage in Brooklyn again, six years after I caught one of their earliest shows at Glasslands. It also gave me hope: Here’s a band that has thrived from day one on the very simple proposition of writing good songs and performing them well, and continues to be well-received.

This show at Rough Trade marked the end of the band’s recent tour in support of Expect the Best, and it had that triumphal homecoming feel about it, from the crowd of friends and showgoing regulars to the career-spanning setlist. After all, it’s not like Widowspeak need to hunt around Brooklyn for converts. Expect the Best feels like a darker, slightly less pop-driven record than 2015’s All Yours, as befits the times and singer Molly Hamilton’s recent decamping to her home in the Pacific Northwest. Likewise, the new record also has more of a “live” sound to it, a bit looser than the band’s recent efforts, and that also works to the advantage of these songs like, particularly the set opener, “Right On,” which reminded us that despite the association of this band with more of a hazy, laid-back sound, they are more than capable of rocking out. As noted, the set also reached back to the band’s first album for three of their best-loved numbers, the unforgettable “In the Pines,” “Gun Shy” and Hamilton’s Pacific Northwest in-joke “Harsh Realm.” Hearing those songs played by a tightly-knit four-piece — a much fuller sound than the trio had back in 2011 — only reminded me again that some things do improve with time. Widowspeak are one of those bands that has not only stayed consistent, but keeps putting out great new music. That album title they chose this time says it all.

Sunburned Hand of the Man: August 28, 2017 Rough Trade NYC

Sunburned Hand of the Man are such a disparate psychedelic force (with over 100 releases to their name) that you can’t ever guarantee what’s going to come out of them. For this set, we got a ten-person band on the stage of Rough Trade NYC to play a four-part improvisation that the band referred to as the “Blizzard of Zoz.” Compared to some of the sets we served up to you last year, the “Blizzard of Zoz” was a bit more of a groove-driven affair, expanding over 42 mind-melting minutes from a low drone into a tight groove, then heading into freakout territory. Don’t worry, these sets were plenty noisy, too. The intensity of the proceedings was maximized by the Mad Alchemy liquid light show going on behind the band, which absorbed us all through the end.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK22 “open cardiod” microphones and a soundboard feed from Noel Ford, engineer of Dinosaur Jr. and several other bands. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Doug Tuttle: August 28, 2017 Rough Trade NYC

Doug Tuttle, originally known as a member of the New Hampshire psych voyagers MMOSS, is now three albums deep into his journey as a solo artist. What he has proven across those three records, including his latest, Peace Potato, is how adept he is with melodic songcraft, with Chilton-esque hooks and an acid-washed, classic sound that matches his multilayered vocals perfectly. What this live show at Rough Trade NYC established, though, was that Tuttle remains a serious instrumentalist, capable of leading those earworm hooks into florid, all-out jams. Adding to the inspiration on this night was the truly incredible liquid light show courtesy of Mad Alchemy, whose work set the perfect generational and visual tone for what was going on onstage. If one had to pick some highlights from the night, my votes would go to a snappy version of “Bait the Sun” from Peace Potato, “Lasting Away” from Doug’s self-titled first album, and the night’s mind-bending conclusion, as “Turn This Love” segued into a twelve-minute untitled jam that was both the set’s most cosmic of all.

Jackie Lynn: April 27, 2017 Rough Trade NYC

On the run from the law and those outside it, Jackie Lynn nevertheless found her way to do some touring behind last year’s self-titled Thrill Jockey record. Jackie’s tale of crime, love, escape, and revenge is painted across eight tracks with synths, electronic drum tracks, twelve-string acoustic guitar, and an unmistakeable voice. The entirety of the album is performed live. Come for the thrills of “Alien Love” and “Franlkin, TN” —stay for Jackie’s catharsis (and redemption?) in “Jackie.”

I recorded this from the soundboard cage with the AKG’s set up in DIN stereo configuration, combined with a board feed courtesy of FOH Terry Mattson. The sound is terrific. Enjoy!

Moon Duo: April 27, 2017 Rough Trade NYC

If psychedelic music aims to be transportive, then Moon Duo’s destination looks something like a Village nightclub featuring the Exploding Plastic Inevitable. Sanae Yamada’s synths swirl together with Riply Johnson’s guitar while drummer John Jeffrey plays with motorik precision. Hypnotic visuals play a game of hiding and showing the musicians. Moon Duo play songs for the dark and urban, and naming their recent two-volume album Occult Architecture underscores the time and place of their music. Song titles like “The Death Set,” “Creepin’,” and “Cult of Moloch” tell you this setting shouldn’t be comforting. Capping off the set is a cover of those most-sinister Stooges: “No Fun” gets washed in synth flourishes while Johnson does his best Iggy. The psychedelic sixties are here.

Ryley Walker: January 26, 2017 Rough Trade BK

There’s a period in every premiere artist’s career when their prolific songwriting outpaces their ability to record their songs. Ryley Walker is currently in that kind of fruitful songwriting phase. A few months out from the release of his outstanding Golden Sings That Have Been Sung album, Ryley toured the East coast and arrived at Rough Trade on Thursday night. The set consisted of as many new songs as tracks from the album — three of the four new songs so fresh that Ryley doesn’t even quite have titles for them yet.

But first, there were the familiar ones. The set began with an extended guitar interplay that led into Golden’s “The Roundabout”, followed by another lengthy jam intro to the title track from 2015’s Primrose Green. Between the music was a nice dose of banter and give and take between the admiring audience and the modest troubadour. We saw how Ryley can morph a performance from a “show” to an event that feels like he’s hanging out in your living room at Market Hotel this past Spring. This night at Rough Trade had the same familiar feel — its one of Walker’s most endearing traits. But ultimately its about the songs and to finish the set we got two solo acoustic numbers that accentuated the unique talents of this performer.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted at center of the Soundboard table and mixed with a board feed. The sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!
