Guerilla Toss: September 7, 2019 Bowery Ballroom

September 19, 2019
By

It was last Halloween when our long-time fave space rock pranksters blasted off into Market Hotel, sold out the joint, and presided over perhaps the party of the year. It would be hard to match that epic night in NYC, and for almost a year Guerilla Toss didn’t even try. That is to say, this Bowery Ballroom night is their first proper local headlining gig since last Hallows Eve.

This Saturday night gig may not have been the pure rager that Market experienced, but as GT shows go, this was a real keeper. The band has developed a full-set style of playing distinct “parts” or segments where three or four songs flow naturally from one to the other, and as the band continues to master its live presentation, these segues have become nearly seamless. The Bowery show has not only a tremendous flow, but also a killer setlist, highlights including the Betty>Polly couplet, a Dose Rate that lived up to its name, and a guitar-heavy jammy Meteorological. Things bode well for the November release of the band’s latest EP, What Would The Odd Do? and we can’t wait.

The current Guerilla Toss Northeast Tour comes to a close with two shows, Friday in Boston and Saturday in Holyoke, dates here.

I recorded this set from our old balcony perch and mixed with an excellent feed from FOH Danielle. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Mountain Goats: April 30, 2019 Brooklyn Steel

It was about eighteen months ago when the Mountain Goats played an epic show at Brooklyn Steel that we were fortunate to attend and capture. So the band’s return to the venue on the tour to support their excellent new album In League with Dragons, came with some real anticipation. And man, did the band deliver. John Darnielle was particularly loquacious on this evening (check out the number of “banter” tracks), but his comments were all on point. The Mountain Goats have achieved a level of stature that’s been earned in years of tours and albums, and it seems like the band has reached that point where it can enjoy and revel in its well-deserved respect. And while Dragons dominated the setlist early-on, the band did still deliver the types of old rare nuggets that still satisfy the grizzled veterans of tMG shows. Indeed rare songs like “Jaipur” (played less than 10 times in the last 10 years), “Spilling Toward Alpha” (3 times in the last decade) , and “The Coroner’s Gambit” (played two times before 2019) are the types of setlist surprises that make us keep coming year after year. But ultimately this night was about the new album, the strength of which makes us believe that the Mountain Goats will continue to be the gift that keeps giving.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards raised high inside the soundboard booth and mixed with a board feed mixed expertly as always by longtime tMG FOH Brandon. The result is another superb recording of this band from this venue. Enjoy!

Garcia Peoples: March 29, 2019 Nublu NYC (with Chris Forsyth)

This Nublu night was ostensibly organized as the release party for Garcia Peoples new album Natural Facts with good friend of the site Ryley Walker as special guest. When Ryley decided to take some time off for personal reasons, the band invited another friend of this site Chris Forsyth, and Chris came north from Philadelphia on very short notice. The result was one of the more memorable shows in recent memory. The first set was a solid run through GP material, but it was the second set where the magic was revealed in an incredible hour-long jam sequence that approached legendary status. With Forsyth surrounded by the GP guitar section, the band added percussionist Ryan Jewell, and the double-drummer attack propelled the action through a 32-minute jam on a new Forsyth composition “Techno Top”. What followed were two covers that took the jam-packed crowd into another stratosphere. Of particular note is the tasty 1968-style high-energy “The Other One” which started on a buzz that never wavered through 19 minutes of pure bliss.

If you live in the Philadelphia area, Garcia Peoples is returning the release show favor to Chris Forsyth, as the two will perform together at Jerry’s On Front on April 27 when Forsyth releases his new record All Time Present. Our sincere recommendation is that anyone within any reasonable distance of that show on that night should not miss another magic night.

Eric and I recorded this set from an upfront location in the venue directly behind the DJ booth. The positioning did not permit a board feed, but the fortuitously placed high-end mics have yielded recordings of superb quality. We offer both for your enjoyment!

William Tyler: February 2, 2016 Capitol Theatre (Port Chester, NY) + June 26, 2015 Mercury Lounge

Our friend William Tyler has been a real road warrior these past few years, hitting NYC multiple times both as a headliner and support act. These two performances represent the latter, with Tyler’s virtuoso guitar playing setting the stage for another act. This month, Tyler did the duties for Wilco at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester, NY, a legendary venue that Tyler acknowledged as such before delving into a concise but powerful set that featured a brand-new song, “Venus and Aquarius,” along with growing tour favorite “Highway Anxiety.” The vibe was a bit different at the intimate Mercury Lounge back in summer of 2015, when Tyler opened of the two Ty Segall acoustic sets we covered that day, but what didn’t change was Tyler’s gratitude and generosity toward his audience, as he played another new song (tentatively titled “Going Clear”) as well as another excellent version of “Highway Anxiety,” among others. If you were in the taper’s section at the Cap, you’d have noted the surprise among the Wilco diehards who hadn’t heard Tyler before. Part of Tyler’s charm is that how easily he wins over not only crowds that aren’t his own, but crowds who aren’t generally familiar with instrumental guitar music. Give these sets a listen — both the songs and the banter — and you’ll get a sense of why.

nyctaper recorded each of these sets with Schoeps CCM4 microphones. The Mercury show also includes a soundboard feed. The quality of both is outstanding. Enjoy!

Wilco: February 2, 2016 Capitol Theatre (Port Chester, NY)

February 8, 2016

IMG_1419

Wilco’s return to the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester was a welcome one, with us last having caught the band’s three night stint there in 2014. In 2016, they decided to split things up, with these two shows in Port Chester followed by two shows at King’s Theater in Brooklyn (which we missed, unfortunately). This night at the Cap felt like a bit of warm-up, with Tweedy noting some of the equipment problems that occurred during “Art of Almost.” Compared to the second night of the run, Tweedy had much more to say here, at one point noting that his pants had ripped near the crotch, and the he was trying to avoid a Lenny Kravitz situation that would be “much less impressive” than the one that set the Internet on fire back in 2015. It was a welcome moment of levity in a show that followed this year’s Star Wars template, with the band performing a full run-through of that album before delving into the back catalog, then wrapping up with an acoustic set. Among this night’s highlights were the first encore, a superlative, noisy version of “Spiders (Kidsmoke),” as well as the A.M. favorite, “Box Full of Letters.” The acoustic set also came with a special treat, as opener William Tyler joined for “Airline To Heaven.”

The band’s tour continues down the eastern side of the country for another few days of February before they take a pause until June, when they’ll return for Mountain Jam. We’ll see you there.

nyctaper recorded this set with Schoeps CCM4 cardiods, while acidjack recorded the set with MK22 open cardiods on the same stand. Both recordings are outstanding. Enjoy!
