Yo La Tengo: December 15, 2013 Bell House – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Yo La Tengo are such an embarrassment of riches, it is hard to know where to begin, or what to be said that hasn’t been said in our many reviews of them before. As we reached the penultimate night of the band’s four-night stand at Bell House, we had already seen four sets, two encores and over five hours of their music. But that much Yo La Tengo doesn’t get old. There’s always some new trick up their collective sleeve, or something old that they supercharge with added emotion, a new arrangement, or just a flat-out great performance.

For me, on this night, it was the electric-set closer “I Heard You Looking”. The electric set always closes out with one of their guitar freakout sprawlers, and this was the one I most wanted to hear. The version at last year’s Hanukkah show had been outstanding, to the point that I thought it might be impossible to top, but the level of intensity displayed by Ira, writhing as he wrung noise out of his guitar at the peak of the number, might have done it. The wordless song speaks volumes, from its wistful opening chords to the climax that expands in all directions. It never ceases to be a thing of beauty, but this version stood out even still.

We didn’t get any special guests on this snowy Sunday night, save all-purpose band associate Joe Puleo joining on “I Heard You Looking”, but for the encore, in addition to “Moby Octopad”, we got three covers that have only been brought out a few times on this tour. The three songs — the Who’s “Disguises”, the Only One’s “The Whole of the Law” and Sun Ra’s “Somebody’s In Love” — provided a neat survey of the band’s eclecticism. With one night left to close out 2013, we couldn’t wait to see what came next. Stay tuned.

Yo La Tengo: December 13, 2013 Bell House – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

During their expansive worldwide tour that consumed most of this year, Yo La Tengo tried an interesting concept: At every non-festival show, they would play the same song, “Ohm”, twice. The song would open the first, acoustic set, then pop up again somewhere in the middle of the noisier electric set that followed. It’s almost like they want to be sure we don’t miss the point. To paraphrase it, there is no point in resisting change.

Anyone who joined us for the band’s Hanukkah tradition at Maxwell’s last year, or in previous years, might well have nodded along to many of those lines from “Ohm” as they watched the band perched in front of the fanciful wooden forest on the much broader stage of the Bell House. Whether or not the band’s Hanukkah tradition survives, its spiritual home did not. The spirit at the Bell House on this first night contained both hope and regret. Even if that impossible-to-replicate intimacy of Maxwell’s was gone, even without the rotating cast of surprise opening acts and comedians and non-stop-wacky collaborations, we were still staring down four nights of sold-out shows by the ever-generous band, played to their hometown crowd. A band that, even as veterans go, came as road-tested as possible, arguably at the top of their powers.

Each of the four nights — each of which will be posted on this site in the coming days — followed the band’s tour-long acoustic/electric format, with only the Fade songs repeated (along with a few that cropped up as both acoustic and electric incarnations). Along with Ira’s hilarious banter during “Periodically Double or Triple”, the highlight of the acoustic portion was the cover of the Zombies’ “You Make Me Feel Good”, which made its only appearance of the tour. The electric set boasted the uncommonly played “Story of Jazz” and closed out on one of our favorite of the sprawling jam numbers, “Pass the Hatchet, I Think I’m Goodkind”. Anyone who didn’t expect YLT to pull something out of their hat for the encore by that point shouldn’t have given up hope so easily. Bruce Bennett of Brooklyn garage rockers The A-Bones parachuted in for an encore of three classic covers: The Seeds’ “Can’t Seem To Make You Mine”, The Flamin’ Groovies’ “Slow Death” (a 2013 debut) and Arthur Lee’s “Luci Baines”. The night closed on the quiet but hopeful coda of “Big Day Coming”, a song that echoed that message from “Ohm”. No need to lose time resisting the flow of change. These four nights of the holiday season were meant for celebration.

These Animals: December 6, 2013 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The indie pop band These Animals came to Mercury Lounge a couple Friday nights ago and made the rather crowded bill (three-band early show, two-band late show) their own. The four-member crew met while studying music production at SUNY Purchase, and that shows in their melodic approach and knack for arrangements. As they have said in interviews, they aren’t afraid of writing pop songs, and that shows on unabashed feel good numbers like their latest single, “Hunting Horn”, which is streaming below. They’re a good kind of band to see after a long work week, filled with optimism and good nature that comes through between and during songs. Best of all, this set found us treated to an encore (!!!) that included some hilarious Tom Petty and U2 teases, before the band cranked out the night’s highlight, “Four to the Floor”, also streaming below. I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V cardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from the house engineer, David. Aside from a couple mid-set songs where a few overly chatty audience members decided to congregate right under the microphones, the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Mike Doughty: November 22, 2013 9:30 Club (DC — 2 sets) + November 23, 2013 Webster Hall – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Mike Doughty promised to reimagine some of the favorites he wrote with Soul Coughing, and with a successful PledgeMusic campaign, he made it happen. The new LP features brand-new arrangements that hew closer to the vibe of Doughty’s solo work, with more straight singing and less of the scatty sing-speak that he popularized as “M Doughty” back in the Soul Coughing days.

Doughty has refused to play Soul Coughing songs live for years; his book documents his animosity toward his former bandmates and his perception of how and why the band ended. When he played an acoustic doubleheader at City Winery earlier this year, it was the first time I had seen Soul Coughing material live since the late ’90s.

You don’t have to buy into, or agree with, Doughty’s perspective on the band’s breakup to enjoy the new-old songs. If you were a fan of the band in its heyday, it won’t take long to remember how infectious and unusual many of these songs were. From their breakout hit “Super Bon Bon” to their big hit “Circles” to Ruby Vroom’s standout “Screenwriter’s Blues”, this sound hasn’t been replicated by anyone. It was Doughty’s, and his bandmates’, alone.

We are offering three shows in this post: First, an exclusive “VIP” acoustic performance of five songs prior to the main set at the 9:30 Club in Washington, DC; second, that night’s main set, where Doughty paid a much-deserved and touching tribute to the deceased longtime 9:30 Club fixture Josh Burdette, the kind of person that, if you have ever been to that club, you would remember. Finally, we have a homecoming performance at NYC’s Webster Hall, which due to my failure to charge my preamp, is missing the last few songs. It and the 9:30 Club set are fairly similar.

The acoustic set is the best example of where Doughty is musically today — you hear him deliver some powerful renditions of both his solo stuff and Soul Coughing material in a manner that he grew more comfortable with over the past decade-plus. It’s heartfelt and reflective, more personal than any Soul Coughing performance ever came across.

The Soul Coughing material presents a different challenge. You have a performer who used to be known for spastic, hyperkinetic performances in his 20s, backed by musicians from a variety of disciplines, trying to redefine that material in a newer, more mature image. Soul Coughing shows were just that — shows — and some songs’ delivery covered up some of the original arrangements limitations. In some instances, these “re-imagined” Soul Coughing songs felt the way Doughty said in The Book of Drugs that he wanted them — leaner and meaner, with fewer distractions. “Unmarked Helicopters”, from the X-Files soundtrack, certainly makes that argument, as do, among others, songs like “True Dreams of Wichita” and “Is Chicago, Is Not Chicago”. “St. Louise is Listening” highlights its essential opening lyric when Doughty’s smoother arrangement is deployed.

In other cases, the reimagination becomes more of an adjustment: Without the classic bass line once played by Sebastian Steinberg, a song like “Super Bon-Bon”, with its mad flow and seemingly random lyrics, is no longer what it was. Absent the classic loop credited to Mark De Gli Antoni on “Screenwriter’s Blues”, Doughty’s lyrics have a different cast than they did in the original. That said, that Doughty dared to mess with his original success on this album is a credit to his growth in the past 13 years. As a fan of both his solo work and Soul Coughing, I think I speak for more than myself that we always hoped to hear some of his ’90s work alongside his current material. So, Mike — thank you.

PUP: October 15, 2013 Oh My Rockness CMJ Show, Cameo Gallery – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The Toronto band PUP are one of the latest bands to cement that city’s status as one of the global epicenters of modern punk. From breaking bands like METZ to well established acts like Fucked Up, the scene continues to be fertile ground for vital music of the harder-edged variety. Straight from the kickoff track “Lionheart”, from their self-titled debut, PUP’s set at the Oh My Rockness CMJ show at Cameo Gallery put them on a lot of fans’ radar screens. Making the most of their time, the band barely took a breather between songs as they delivered rapid-fire doses of their hook-laden, head-bobbing tunes like “Back Against the Wall” and “Lionheart”. But it was the set closer, “Reservoir” that really sealed the deal. It’s one of those songs that spins standard young-punk fare and takes it to a darker, more reflective place, and it was a mature, powerful way to end the night.

I read in an interview that the album’s producer, veteran Dave Schiffman (responsible for, among others, records by Cass McCombs, Weezer, Red Hot Chili Peppers, and The Mars Volta) wanted the record to sound “like the best show the band had ever played.” I haven’t seen the band before, so I can’t vouch as to whether this is their “best show”. But I think, after hearing this, it’ll be hard to hear this and not give the record a spin.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other recordings from this night, with Schoeps MK4V cardiod mics and a soundboard feed of the house mix by engineer Gary Atturio. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Firehorse: October 17, 2013 PledgeMusic CMJ Show, McKittrick Hotel – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

I first became aware of Firehorse, led by the NYC singer/songwriter Leah Siegel, when they brought out their first record, And So They Ran Faster, back in 2011. After a series of sorely-missed opportunities around Manhattan and Brooklyn, I was pumped to finally catch in a unique setting, the McKittrick Hotel‘s club room for the CMJ showcase by the music crowdfunding website PledgeMusic. Siegel is a lifelong musician who seems equally at home on the guitar and at the computer, and her latest mini-LP, Pills From Strangers, reflects that. Live, Siegel is a kinetic and versatile performer, able to go full-throttle on an electro-rocker like “Bloodstream” and then dial it back later on for a song like “Fool”, whose deep soul vocals showed off the immensity of her vocal range. Make sure to catch Firehorse in a few weeks at Mercury Lounge, where we are sure to see more of the Pills From Strangers material in action.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V cardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from the McKittrick Hotel engineer, Vincent. This relies mainly on the soundboard feed as the mics were in a less-than-ideal location that picked up a bit too much crowd chatter. With that caveat, enjoy!

Son Lux: November 4, 2013 Joe’s Pub (Late Show) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

It’s a real treat when you see a young artist working in the “popular” realm who is obviously an accomplished student of music. Son Lux, aka Ryan Lott, is one of those indefinable, indefatigable artists who is pushing boundaries with everything he does and unafraid to go far afield from pop’s limiting conventions. His records involve electronics, yes, but what he makes is not “electronic music”. He’s a composer, he’s an arranger, he’s a singer, he’s a pianist; he’s making organic, intricately arranged music that incorporates the full range of his talents and influences to create something uniquely his.

This show at Joe’s Pub was the second of two sets that Lott performed on this night. This one consisted of a full run-through of his latest work, Lanterns, a work originally rendered mainly by electronics, plus an encore for good measure. Here, Lanterns was brought to life as a wonderful digital/analog amalgam, featuring both synced laptop and synth sequences as well as a solo artist playing wine glasses. At time he had a four-member chorus singing along; at others, a more-or-less conventional rock band. It was a triumph of innovation, and of risk. Unlike so many of his contemporaries, Lott seems unconcerned with the niceties of the economic model of his music or snagging easy applause. He is an emotional, florid sort of singer, the kind who you suspect can go to places you didn’t even think of, and his hooks, if less immediate at times, are all the more compelling. Son Lux is truly music of, by, and for the twenty-first century, in the best and most honest of ways.

Sebadoh: November 1, 2013 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

You don’t have to violate Lou Barlow’s privacy (the way some people did) to figure out the inspiration for Sebadoh‘s first record in 14 years, Defend Yourself. The details are right there in the lyrics, laid bare and sharply observed for all to see. It’s a deeply personal work, the new record. And also, it’s a new Sebadoh record. While the band did some “reunion” shows over the past few years — including an outstanding Maxwell’s show we saw back in 2011 — it is a treat to see current members Barlow, Jason Loewenstein and Bob D’Amico back on the road with new songs in their arsenal, looking forward rather than looking back. Their new tour for Defend Yourself began this Friday night at Bowery Ballroom, where a sold-out crowd sent them off on their mini-tour of the East Coast, Canada and Midwest.

After a measured start (where much tuning was promised), this sprawling hour-and-a-half-plus set delivered over and over, from the a cappella opening bars of “I Will” from Defend Yourself to “Freed Pig” from IIIIf Defend Yourself has a bit of a glossier sheen compared to the band’s lo-fi beginnings (or even Harmacy), on the stage that’s all stripped away. New songs like “State of Mine” (streaming below) integrated perfectly with old favorites like “Soul and Fire” and “Forced Love”. As more of their contemporaries come out of retirement to play the hits, it was a good and right thing to see Sebadoh prove they have juice to carry them into the future. If anything, Sebadoh have reached that glorious, comfortable place where they can afford to keep it loose, where the know the fans actually want to be there for 100 minutes’ worth of twenty-six songs that they’ll give their full attention. At this point it’s not just about whether there is another sold-out show or getting good reviews. This band has their fan base, and they keep earning their good graces. At this point, they can enjoy the beauty of the ride, and we can hope it continues.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V cardiod microphones and an excellent soundboard feed from house engineer Kenny. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Black Twig Pickers: September 7, 2013 Paradise of Bachelors/WXYC Day Show, Hopscotch Music Festival (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The great folklorist Alan Lomax always feared that the mass culture would destroy regional styles of music, creating an indistinct, homogenized whole with no sense of place. While his thesis hasn’t totally been proven wrong, the scope of technology and the fervent interest in music fostered in part by it today allow people to reach beyond their borders to preserve such styles, as well as present them to a wider audience.

Enter the Black Twig Pickers, playing Appalachian old-time music of southwest Virginia the way it’s meant to be played. Their music aims to both preserve tradition, as well as expand upon it in ways that distance and lack of technology couldn’t in its earlier years. The Twigs are regulars at the Hopscotch Music Festival, having provided tunes for the Three Lobed/WXDU Day Show the past few years, but this year they were also able to join our friends at Paradise of Bachelors for a full set on their lovely outdoor stage.

The Twigs have had a great year so far, releasing both their excellent Rough Carpenters LP along with a split 7″ with Steve Gunn on Thrill JockeyCarpenters takes the scope of the Twigs’ music a little farther afield in the Appalachian tradition, bringing in new regional influences and showing more emphasis on dance numbers. This set began in transition from the Pelt set moments before, as Pelt members Mike Gangloff and Nathan Bowles segued the outro drone from that set into the traditional bluegrass number “Dan Friend’s Piece”. From there, we got a short and sweet frolic through the Twigs’ catalog, including “Old Christmas Morning” and “Rough Carpenters” from Rough Carpenters. At a festival that featured everything from black metal to electronically composed ambient music, this was an opportunity to take a brief step back in time to honor a tradition whose influence, even as it has morphed and change, well exceeded its original borders or its original players’ wildest intentions. Were he still alive, Lomax might see a show like this, and find comfort yet.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other sets at this show, and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Ovlov: October 15, 2013 Oh My Rockness CMJ Show, Cameo Gallery – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

It’s always gratifying when you run into a friend at a show that you didn’t plan to see, and their first reaction to the band you came to see is “holy shit, these guys are good”. The Connecticut band Ovlov, comprised of three brothers, were one of my most anticipated acts of this year’s CMJ Music Marathon, and they brought everything they had for this Oh My Rockness-sponsored set at Cameo Gallery. For those who didn’t already know how good they were, they surprised them.

Ovlov synthesizes influences from a number of big-time ’90s touchstones, the most obvious being Dinosaur Jr., abetted by vocalist Steve Hartlett’s incredible resemblance to J Mascis’ vocal delivery. If you closed your eyes, their song “The Well” could almost be Dinosaur Jr. circa 1991. The band’s latest record, Am, doesn’t shy from these influences, nor should it. It’s no accident that Ovlov might well share a record collection with well-loved contemporaries like Speedy Ortiz; Sadie Dupuis does guest vocals on Am. As with any correct CMJ show, this one offered a glimpse into what this band had to offer, and they maximized the punch of their eight-song set, with many Am wonders combined with some slightly deeper cuts. CMJ did exactly what it should for this band — give them a shot at a wider audience. I have no doubt that Ovlov have earned it.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from the Cameo engineer and friend of the site Gary Atturio, plus Schoeps MK4V cardiod microphones ideal for this kind of room. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!
