Heartless Bastards: May 10, 2016 Music Hall of Williamsburg

Our journey with the Heartless Bastards continued this year with this show at Music Hall of Williamsburg, part of a dual-headlining tour with the Old 97’s (unfortunately, not taped). Since we first started covering their shows seven years ago, the Bastards have proven over and over to be a consistent, happy go lucky gang of road warriors, churning out one high energy show after another. It’s a credit to them that over a career that spans numerous albums and more than a decade, there’s not a dud among the bunch. Like another Cincinnati band we like to gush about, this band trades flash for grit, quality for quackery. For this show, the second of theirs we’ve covered at this venue, there wasn’t a brand-new album to promote (Restless Ones came out last year) so we were treated to a hit parade of sorts, from “Blue Day” from All This Time, to some of my favorites from Arrow like “Down in the Canyon” and “Skin and Bone,” to the new stuff, including obvious road winner “Gates of Dawn.” As both bands played essentially headliner-length sets, this clocked in a touch shorter than some of the recent sets we’ve seen (though still well past an hour) but nobody left complaining. The band went on to swap places with the Old 97’s a couple nights later at Irving Plaza, but I have to believe the Music Hall crowd got the better end of the bargain. As Erika said, the band loves this club, and for good reason. Like the band themselves, it’s something familiar, and something good.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones in our usual spot, plus an Aeta PSP-3 preamp to provide optimum clarity. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Nap Eyes: March 9, 2016 Union Pool

Nap Eyes, of Halifax, Nova Scotia, occupy a bit of a time warp. Listen to Thought Rock Fish Scale, their fantastic new record on Paradise of Bachelors, without knowing what you’re hearing and you might believe you were hearing mid-70s Californians raised on Lou Reed, combining laid-back rhythms with a conversational, wry delivery. Frontman Nigel Chapman has the effect of sounding like someone you’ve heard a thousand times, but haven’t quite heard before. Beneath the winsome surface, Nap Eyes have a lot going on, including Chapman’s lyrics, which swing from the confessional to the bizarre. Not that it matters much in the live setting, where we caught the band’s sold-out show at Union Pool last week. The band showed off tunes from both Thought Rock and their recently-reissued debut, Whine of the Mystic, as well as one brand-new song that shows the same level of promise as the two recent offerings. Combined with the guys’ good-natured banter (even a parent was in attendance), the show gave you the sense that the positive press surrounding this band is well-earned, a sign of their low-key appeal and their ability to casually surprise.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones from our usual spot in the balcony, combined with a soundboard feed from Union Pool engineer Robert. There are two flaws: the level of the vocals fluctuates a bit halfway through, and the house music isn’t totally faded out for about half of the first song. With those two caveats, the sound quality overall is excellent. Enjoy!

Cian Nugent: March 9, 2016 Union Pool

With his brand new album Night Fiction, the Irish guitarist Cian Nugent has followed in the footsteps of some of his other guitar proteges. That is, without abandoning the intricate guitar sound that brought us in to begin with, he’s also stepped to the mic as vocalist in a full band. This was Nugent’s first U.S. tour in that capacity, and the Union Pool crowd knew it, stuffing the place to the gills on a warm Wednesday night. With a crack band that includes Ryan Jewell (also of Ryley Walker’s regular outfit, among others) and Conor Lumsden, Nugent delved straight into the new material with a stirring “First Run,” one of the bluesier rock numbers in his new repertoire. As another review put it, Nugent didn’t exactly need to “find his voice,” but his new turn as a singer nonetheless felt assured. Things took a contemplative turn mid-set with the unhurried “Things Don’t Change That Fast,” one of the album’s centerpiece tracks, followed by the like-minded “Shadows.”

But if you thought Nugent was going down on a somber note, I hope you didn’t miss the show’s piece de resistance, with a surprise visit from Steve Gunn on the fifteen-minute album boogie monster “Year of the Snake.” Conjuring the magic of the stunning Desert Heat show we captured a few years ago, Gunn and Nugent traded riffs like the longtime collaborators they are, with both clearly feeling the energy of the room and the night. It was an absolute barnstormer of a song, with the two players so far in the zone you almost hoped it wouldn’t end. Cian will be back in town on April 9 at Alphaville — be sure to see him there.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from Union Pool engineer Robert. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Soldiers of Fortune: January 7, 2016 Bowery Ballroom

January 26, 2016
By

IMG_1267

Soldiers of Fortune have marketed themselves at various points as an “anti-band” — one that never writes music, practices, or records. Of course, given the cast of players (Brad Truax (Interpol, others)), Kid Millions (Man Forever, Oneida), Barry London (Oneida), Matt Sweeney (Chavez, many others), Jesper Eklow (Endless Boogie, others), Mike Bones, and Papa Crazee (Oneida)), that’s hardly a disqualification from being a “band.” These are folks whose improvisational turns regularly outshine their recorded output. This show at Bowery Ballroom comes on the heels of the release in November 2015 of their record Early Risers, a more song-based affair, but of course that didn’t stop the crew from delving in one long, multi-movement sustained jam (which, I confess, may or may not include actual songs from the record). Though Cass McCombs was the night’s headliner, you might not have known it from looking at the packed floor of the venue, where it seemed an entire crew of heads were there just for this set, ultimately being replaced by yet-more people for Cass’s set. As with our excellent recent spate of Oneida shows, this was an experimental music fan’s dream, a can’t-miss experience from an outfit that you don’t see around here too often.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones in our usual spot together with a soundboard feed from Bowery legend Kenny. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Hiss Golden Messenger: November 19, 2015 Baby’s All Right

November 25, 2015
By

IMG_0806

Continuing with the “running out of things to say” theme, I think even the band is starting to wonder if I do much of anything besides attend Hiss Golden Messenger concerts. If you read about the band’s doings in Durham, NC earlier last week, you’d know they debuted Heart Like A Levee, an entire new album, before two successive nights of attendees at Duke University. That album should be appearing on Merge Records in due time.

Well, this show at Baby’s All Right wasn’t that, but that’s not to take anything away from this sweaty, raucous show before a sell-out crowd. M.C. Taylor was joined on this jaunt by most of his regular band — the Cook brothers on keys and guitars, Matt McCaughan on drums — with Josh Kaufman taking up additional guitar duties. This show sounded like one by people who’ve fallen into a comfortable groove, and despite the extremely unpleasant temperature (how you make a club over 100 degrees indoors in the middle of November is a mystery to me) the band sweated through some strong versions of their tour favorites, plus less-heard numbers like “Mahogany Dread,” off of Lateness of DancersPoor Moon‘s “Super Blue (Two Days Clean)” and a newly-rocking version of “Brother, Do You Know the Road?” Perhaps out of a sense of self-preservation (the band were so hot their guitars were covered in sweat), we only got one encore, but it was a keeper — Waylon Jennings’ “Lonesome, On’ry and Mean.”

So, forgive the brevity of this writeup, but if you’re already on the train, you can read any of my reviews of recent shows to get a pretty good idea where things are headed. If you’re new to the band, well, this is a fine, fine way to take the plunge.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones at the stage lip, together with Harrison Fore’s soundboard feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

We caught back up with Michigan band Greensky Bluegrass, seen by us most recently at the Gramercy Theatre last year, during the peak heat on this past Saturday at Gathering of the Vibes. The band’s updated bluegrass sound made for a perfect backdrop to the sunny weather, as they mellowed things down with their approachable tunes and good, well, vibes. This being a festival set, we were treated to an hour’s worth of some of the band’s key material, much of it culled from their most recent effort If Sorrows Swim. Back at the Gramercy the band busted out a Prince cover; today found them in a similar mid-’80s frame of mind cover-wise, as they pulled out Dire Straits’ 1985 classic, “Money For Nothing.” MTV barely even exists anymore, but even the younger segments of the Vibe Tribe still seemed to get it. This was Greensky’s first Gathering of the Vibes, and based on the crowd’s response, I suspect they’ll be back.

I recorded this set with four Schoeps microphones, combining a pair of MK4V cardiods with MK5s in the omnidirectional pattern to give the recording added presence. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard: June 19, 2015 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

In the year since we were first introduced to King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, they’ve grown from being fairly obscure Australian psych-rock ravers to the group that released one of our favorite albums of the last year, signed with Castle Face Records in the US, and this past week sold out Bowery Ballroom. Last Fall they played two of our favorite shows of the past year, a eye-opener as support for White Fence at Baby’s All Right, and a completely insane set at a loft show on Halloween. In between the band released I’m In Your Mind Fuzz to universally positive reviews and gained enough of a foothold in the US to return six months later from halfway across the world and fill a room that it takes others years to achieve. That says a lot for the musicianship and songwriting of The Gizz, but for their live shows its mostly about the unbridled energy they bring to each performance. At Bowery, the band started with the four-song medley that opens Mind and the crowd was with them from note one — this was one of those shows where it was hard to ever even catch your breath. The set also featured a handful of new songs, each of which fit right into the flow and maintained the energy inside the venue. This bodes well for the quality of the band’s future releases. I later learned from speaking with the band that there will be likely two upcoming releases, details to follow.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards and a fine board feed from our usual location at the Bowery and the sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

We also captured the Baby’s All Right sets from later in the week and will post those in the coming days.

Tom Carter / Barry Weisblat Duo: February 24, 2015 FLAC/MP3/Streaming

March 24, 2015
By

IMG_0681

The guitarist Tom Carter has made a couple of appearances on this site, being one of this city’s most exciting innovators on the instrument. While Carter was already known for his eclectic tastes, both as a solo act and with Charalambides, this combination of Carter and the multi-instrumentalist Barry Weisblat took things further into the out realm. The two appeared at last month’s installment of the “Music From NY Underground: On the Way Out” event held monthly at Freddy’s Bar in Park Slope, and produced an improvisational composition worthy of that title. Weisblat arrived armed with a host of obscure devices able to create a host of tones and textures, to which Carter overlaid his signature guitar sound. The end result was a thought-provoking, almost cinematic drone sequence that was revelatory to see created, but will reward patient repeat listening even more. We are excited to have been able to witness and capture this unique musical interaction, and hope you feel the same.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones in the ORTF configuration near the performers, together with a feed from the small PA system mixer. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

For those interested, the next installment of this series happens tonight (March 24, 2015) at Freddy’s. Check it out.

Angel Olsen: December 9, 2014 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC/MP3/Full Set Streaming

December 23, 2014
By

IMG_8140

Angel Olsen ended up on a lot of year-end lists this year for several reasons, but the instrument you’ll notice most is her voice. Olsen has one of those aching, slightly sharp tones to her throat that doesn’t let your attention slip, refuses to fade into background music. This show at Bowery Ballroom was the second of a two-night stand for Olsen at the venue, and her final show of the year. In keeping with that, she let loose, drinking tequila onstage and playing both some cool covers (Waylon Jennings’ “Rainy Day Woman”) and some of her oldest songs (“Tiniest Lights”). She played that latter song, and several others, to a room rapt and whisper-quiet, alone on her guitar. The rock-ier songs, especially those from the lauded Burn Your Fire for No Witness, may have carried the day with the crowd, but it was these quiet numbers that gave the clearer window into who Olsen is and just how affecting her work can be. It wouldn’t be wrong to call Olsen one of the breakout acts of 2014, and she more than deserves the title. I hope she has a wonderful 2015.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones from our usual location in the venue. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Wilco: October 28, 2014 Capitol Theatre – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

October 29, 2014
By

IMG_0445

Wilco, themselves the spawn of the No Depression greats Uncle Tupelo, are touring to celebrate their twentieth year as a band. Look around at acts of their longevity, and you tend to see one of two things: strict and competent adherence to a winning formula (Foo Fighters, Pearl Jam) or aggressive experimentation and reinvention (Radiohead). Wilco may claim to do both — there’s a straight line from the rock n’ roll stomp of a song like A.M>‘s “Casino Queen” (the second to last song of the night) to a song like “Wilco (The Song”), which opened the night. But there is also that seismic shift to point to that began on Being There and solidified on Yankee Hotel Foxtrot which catapulted the band beyond their existing limits into the realm of something special. The kind of band that, in gracing the renewed Capitol Theatre for the first time, belongs firmly in the first rank of bands that made that place famous.

This set was, if one can call it such, the usual harassment of riches from this band — two hours and twenty minutes long, 30 songs, and many old and underplayed favorites. “Casino Queen” joined Doug Sahm’s “Give Me Back the Key To My Heart” and “Too Far Apart” in a semi-amplified acoustic set that closed the evening, and early material (and a fair number of ballads) was the rule for much of the night. “Hummingbird” found touring guitarist Nels Cline on a tear that left Tweedy to say “I don’t think you’ll hear it like that ever again”. The beauty of this band is that even with three nights of shows in the same venue (all of which we are covering), you’ll never hear something the same way again.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 and an MK8 microphone in the “mid-side” configuration to maximize control over reverberation and crowd noise. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!
