Crystal Stilts: May 5, 2012 285 Kent + April 14, 2012 Rock N Roll Hotel Washington DC – Flac and MP3 Downloads and Streaming Song

The show on Saturday night at 285 Kent was headlined by another one of this site’s favorite bands and one that we’ve followed for all of our five years. We first saw Crystal Stilts back in 2008, and over the last few years our recordings of them have been featured on the site six previous times from a large variety of venues. After a bit of a hiatus, the band returned in 2011 with a superb new album In Love with Oblivion (Slumberland) and a new EP Radiant Door (Sacred Bones Records), both of which cemented their position as one of best post-punk garage bands around. The style remains consistent — Brad Hargett’s heavily reverbed vocals backed by the sixties influenced guitar work of founder JB Townsend and the adventurous keyboards of Kyle Forester. Their show at 285 Kent is one of the strongest we’ve seen them play to date. The set was not simply the new album, but a full slate of Stilts material, a brand new song and a well-conceived Gun Club cover. The band ended the set with a spacey and stretched-out version of “Prometheus” before returning for well-deserved encore. We are streaming “Shake the Shackles”, a 2010 single that also appears on Oblivion. Crystal Stilts will perform again locally, this time next door to 285 at Glasslands on June 17 for the Sacred Bones Records Northside Festival showcase.

Additionally, for this post we are offering a bonus download of the Crystal Stilts live in Washington DC, a show recorded in April by friend of the site Kubacheck at the Rock N’ Roll Hotel. The show features a setlist quite different from the 285 set with some deep cuts along with more of the new album.

I recorded the 285 set in the same manner as the Woods set and the sound quality is excellent. The Washington show was recorded by Kubacheck with MBHO microphones and a board feed and was mixed by acidjack. The placement of the microphones resulted in a large dose of crowd chatter which has been alleviated by mixing the board feed at a greater percentage. The sound quality of that set is also excellent. Enjoy!

Woods: May 5, 2012 285 Kent – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

Woods is one of those special bands with whom we like to feel as if we’ve traveled a long way. I first saw the band back in 2008 at Monster Island basement, and we’ve featured them on the site nine previous times over the last five years. The band has evolved in both songwriting and personnel, but the focus remains the same — strong folk-rock melodies with a heavy dose of experimentation. Woods has a new drummer, which means that Jarvis who played most of the drums in previous versions of the band is now out front all show playing guitar. At 285 Kent on Saturday night, Woods was part of one of the stronger bills we’ve seen all year with MMoss and Crystal Stilts. As the middle band, their set was shorter than we had hoped but on the last night of a two-week tour, Woods was energetic and tight. With Jarvis adding extra guitar, the jam elements of each song were also fleshed out. “Bend Beyond” filled the middle of the set and stretched to almost fourteen minutes. The set also included two brand new songs, and a nice variety of material. We are streaming “Blood Dries Darker”, the strong set closer. Woods will be off the road for while, but the annual Woodsist Festival returns to Big Sur California in August.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser 8040s mounted on a pole 15 feet from the stage and mixed with a board feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

El Jezel: April 5, 2012 Brain Cave Festival at Bell House – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

April 25, 2012

[photo by Eric Groom courtesy of Impose Magazine]

El Jezel is not a new band — they have been around for about five years. They even played a show we presented in 2009 at Monster Island. But they have certainly not received their due. The trio is fronted by the married couple George and Jess Flanagan so there is a natural stage chemistry, and their song writing has always been top notch. But at the Brain Cave Festival at Bell House a couple of weeks back, it was the guitar playing that caught my ear. George has a clean tone and uses his pedals judiciously to create a full band sound. This is a guitar player who understands the proper use of technique, subtlety and the flow of a song. We are streaming “Watermain” from their 2009 album The Warm Frequency, which highlights all of George’s strengths as a performer all in one neat package.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser MKH-8040 Cardioids mounted at the soundboard cage, and mixed with a board feed. The mix is primarily audience as the room had a nice feel throughout the entire Fest. Enjoy!

Conduits: April 2, 2012 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

April 24, 2012

Conduits are a new band from the always-punching-above-its-weight music scene of Omaha, Nebraska, and we were fortunate enough to catch them right after the release of their promising self-titled debut on the label Team Love.  Conduits’ reference points include many bands I revere – Slowdive, My Bloody Valentine, Lush, Portishead and the underappreciated Irish band Scheer – so I was naturally taken with their sound. Lead singer Jenna Morrison, previously of another beloved Omaha band Son, Ambulance, is a commanding frontwoman and vocalist, with the sort of powerful but ethereal voice that works perfectly with the band’s layers of feedback-drenched sound. And far from affecting the distant posture of some of their sonic forebears, Conduits actually perform, again with Morrison and bandmates J.J. Idt (guitar), Nate Mickish (guitar), Mike Overfield (bass, keys), Roger L. Lewis (drums), and Patrick Newbery (synth, keys) sharing the intensity of the moment with the crowd. Knob-twiddlers and shoegazers they ain’t – this is a rock n’ roll band that, even at a young stage, looked and sounded totally comfortable on the relatively big Bowery stage.  Idt and Mickish, who founded the band, clearly assembled their fellow players wisely.

This opening set at Bowery Ballroom covered four of the eight tracks on Conduits, plus two other songs that were new to me. My personal favorites came back to back – the strong rocker “Blood” and the more dark, atmospheric “Last Dirge”. Although the set was brief, it established Conduits as a band to watch. We expect great things in the future.

nyctaper and I recorded this set with a combination of more directional Schoeps MK41 hypercardiod microphones and Sennheiser MKH-8040 cardiods.  While this was not my favorite house mix in this beautiful-sounding room, this remains a great capture and a worthwhile introduction to this band. Enjoy!

Black Angels: March 16, 2012 SXSW at Hotel Vegan Austin TX – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

The Black Angels were technically a late addition at the Friday day show at Hotel Vegan. The band roster wasn’t announced until SXSW had already begun, but given that the band called Austin home, it was a welcome addition but not really a surprise. That being said, any opportunity to experience one of the premiere psych-rock bands around today on their home turf is a must see. The Black Angels have not released a new album since 2010’s superb Phosphene Dream, but the addition of two brand new songs to the setlist helped make this show special. We are streaming the opening track from Phosphene, “Bad Vibrations”, an outstanding version heavy in the reverb, sixties-style organ and haunting guitar lines.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser microphones mounted at the soundboard tent and mixed with a stereo board feed. The position of the tent on this day was very close to an outdoor bar, so there is some extra crowd noise not present on the other dates. With that caveat, Enjoy!

The War On Drugs: April 8, 2012 Bowery Ballroom – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

April 12, 2012

Its hard to be objective when a band personally dedicates a song to you by name from the stage of Bowery Ballroom, but The War On Drugs show at Bowery was beyond the need for personal puffery. At an hour and forty minutes, and including in the setlist virtually everything the band has recorded, this War On Drugs set was epic. While David Hartley’s bass guitar has always been the backbone of the live band and his work on this night was superb, its hard to fathom the extent of the confidence and maturity that has Adam Granduciel now exhibits. Throughout the show, Adam’s delivery of each song was intense. While the band has reached a level of proficiency that often follows groups that tour extensively, the recent success seems to have propelled their energy to the next level. Opening with the double whammy of “Arms Like Boulders” and “Baby Missiles”, the momentum never let up. Slave Ambient was universally acknowledged as one of the best albums of 2011, and its prominence in the song selection was no surprise. But it was the development of the songs in the live setting that impressed — “Your Love / Animator / Come To the City” is now a twenty-plus minute segue, while “Best Night” (streaming below) is now charged up enough to be the next song that WOD plays on television. The show would not be complete without an inventive cover, and on this night it was from the Scottish indie troubadours The Waterboys, the classic “A Pagan Place” (also streaming below). The War On Drugs will be active on the Festival circuit this Spring and Summer, dates are here.

I recorded this set from our standard balcony location with the Sennheiser 8040s mixed with an outstanding board feed and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Heartless Bastards: March 17, 2012 SXSW at Hotel Vegan Austin TX – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

We are all big fans of Heartless Bastards over here at nyctaper, as well we’re quite fond of Partisan Records. When the two got together earlier this year and released HB’s strongest record to date, Arrow, acidjack and John got to celebrate with the band at their sold out Webster Hall show in February. That triumphant 90+ minute show was a watershed moment of sorts, but it was not too long before we were able to catch them again. This time it was the packed bill of Hotel Vegan’s final day. Playing after Lucero and before Diamond Rugs (coming soon), Heartless Bastards delivered a powerful forty-minute set that began with a stunning version of epic song of the year candidate “Down In The Canyon”, and never let up. The new songs were primarily featured, but we’re streaming an HB classic “Nothing Seems the Same” which ended the show on a high note.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Lucero set with the Sennheiser cards mixed with a board feed, and the sound quality is excellent despite the many distractions the setting contained. Enjoy!

Prince Rama: March 17, 2012 SXSW at Longbranch Inn Impose Party – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

[photo by Mary Kang – courtesy of Impose Magazine]

Our night-time regular haunt during this year’s SXSW Festival was the series of shows presented by Impose Magazine. The “Austin Imposition” took place this year at Longbranch Inn, a cozy East side venue that had the perfect atmosphere for Impose’s steady stream of outstanding bands.

On Saturday night, the highlight of the final evening of SXSW was the performance by Prince Rama. I had seen Prince Rama a couple of years ago at Glasslands when they were a trio, but the band now consists a duo of sisters Taraka and Nimai Larson and their performance was a revelation. The sisters combined stand-up drums with keyboards and effects to create a hypnotic set that entranced the crowd. One spectator exclaimed “that was a religious experience” at the close of the set. Prince Rama played two songs from their most recent record, Trust Now (Paw Tracks), and three newer numbers. We are streaming “Rest in Peace”, the opening track from Trust Now which was nearly seven minutes of bliss at the Longbranch Inn that night.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser MKH-8040 cardioid microphones mounted on a stand at the front of the stage and combined the mics with a soundboard feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Fanfarlo: March 15, 2012 SXSW at Hotel Vegan Austin TX – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

March 21, 2012
By

NYCTaper went on the road to Austin last week for the annual SXSW Festival. As I tweeted at one point near the end of my trip, SXSW is kind of like CMJ on steroids. There are a ton of corporate-backed “scene” shows downtown that really don’t appeal to me. However, on the East side there was a series of unofficial showcases that featured just about every band you could see downtown, only under much better circumstances — a relaxed atmosphere not overrun by commercialization. That’s where we spent the Fest.

The best of these unofficial shows was the four-day afternoon showcases presented by brooklynvegan at the venue Hotel Vegas, rechristened “Hotel Vegan” for the week. Each afternoon eight or nine band played on an outside stage while inside there was additional bands on two other stages. We camped out on Thursday at noon at the outside stage and that’s where we stayed for the next three days. Each day’s afternoon showcases were recorded, and I’ll be featuring a large amount of those recordings over the next few weeks.

One of the highlights of Thursday’s show was the set by the British-based band Fanfarlo. They are currently in the US on tour to support their new album Rooms Filled With Light and based upon reviews, I expected the Fanfarlo to have a more pronounced electronic feel to their beautiful indie-folk. I had not seen the band since 2009 (here) and while its clear that their sound has changed, I find it more of an evolution than a departure. The focus remains on Simon Balthazar’s vocals and songwriting accompanied by a variety of instrumentations from the talented band. At this Hotel Vegan show, it was the horn playing that cut through the heat, chatter and outdoor sounds to propel the band forward. The set consisted of all but one song from Rooms, and we are streaming “Deconstruction”, a powerful song that builds in intensity to a stunning conclusion.

I recorded all of the Hotel Vegan outdoor sets with the assistance of my new Sennheiser MKH-8040 Cardioid microphones and they certainly proved up to the task. These recordings presented many challenges, the most pronounced of which was the persistent thumping of bass and drums from an adjacent competing stage (unaffiliated with brooklynvegan). Our “neighbors” seemed to feel the need to compensate for the poor attendance at their show by cranking their sound system. Some of this noise can be heard in between songs in many of the Hotel Vegan recordings. There was also the expected constant chatter and movement of the Festival crowd. I was also assisted with an excellent soundboard feed by the superb FOH technicians Toby and Taylor employed at the Festival by Miller Pro Audio. With all of these challenges (and caveats), I still feel that the sound quality of these recordings is excellent under the circumstances. Enjoy!

Craig Finn: February 29, 2012 Mercury Lounge (Early Show) – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

March 2, 2012
By

[photo courtesy of Geoffrey at According to G]

Craig Finn’s first solo album Clear Heart Full Eyes is a significant departure from his eight years in The Hold Steady. Its a relaxed country album produced in Texas that has a demo feel. Finn’s storyteller style fits well in this genre, and as a result the new record has been well received. For the tour in support, Finn has put together a band of ringers that he has labeled “Some Guns”, after his song of the same title (streaming below). While the band includes a lead guitar and a lap-steel guitar, the live performance has a greater rock feel than the album. At Mercury Lounge on Wednesday night, Craig Finn played two shows and we caught the early one. Late in the tour and back home, the band was both tight and celebratory. As is his live tradition, Finn spoke candidly to the crowd and his between song stories and banter were compelling and entertaining. Also familiarly, the reworked full band rock versions of the Clear Heart songs have a Hold Steady feel to them, although the three-song solo acoustic mini-set was a new experience. Craig Finn has promised a new Hold Steady album later this year, but given the number and quality of the unreleased songs featured in this set, we would venture to say that he has enough strong material for a second solo album. Craig will be touring throughout March. While tour ends in Europe, there is another NYC date coming soon, at Music Hall of Williamsburg next week.

I recorded this set with the new Sennheiser MKH-8040s from the front of the soundboard in the center of the room. The three quiet songs suffer from some ambient noise (door, cups), but overall the sound is crisp and meaty. Enjoy!
