Wussy’s new album Attica (Shake It Records) will be released in about a month. Its the band’s fifth full-length release and its certainly their most ambitious project thus far. The album fully incorporates touring guitarist John Erhardt as a full-time member and the added instrumentation is evident in the record’s production. Wussy recorded in the Afghan Whigs John Curley’s studio and the results are both stylistically consistent with their previous output and more fully realized. Wussy is still raw and authentic, and when we caught them live last week at The Studio at Webster Hall, still funny as hell. This band has some very dedicated fans — we receive more requests to record Wussy than any other band, believe it not — and the front half of the room at the Studio was packed. Lisa Walker even took time during the encore break to individually thank fans who she’d seen consistently at shows. The set was what we’ve come to expect from our previous experiences, a fun and energetic but a tad bit sloppy run through a good selection of the band’s Ohio americana/garage rock with frequent bits of hilarious banter. For this tour, the Attica material is obviously front and center and we’re streaming an excellent version of “Bug”, one of the standout tracks on the album.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards set up beside the soundboard in the rear of the rectangular room and mixed with a board feed provided by house FOH David. The chattering in the back of the room can be heard at quieter times in the recording, but overall the sound is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Hurray For The Riff Raff: April 2, 2014 Knitting Factory – Flac/MP3/Streaming

April 7, 2014
By

HFTRR LC

In February, Hurray For The Riff Raff released Small Town Heroes, their first album for ATO Records. As we’ve followed the band closely for several years, the last five recordings of HFTRR on this site have also followed the growth and development of these songs over time. The album is a brilliant dose of Americana but the songcraft is truly what shines in the collection of inspired tracks. There’s the Carter Family influenced old country of “Blue Ridge Mountain”, country-rock in “End Of The Line”, New Orleans blues of “St Roch Blues”, the John Prine-ish title track, and the reverse/revenge murder ballad “The Body Electric” — all of which are authentic interpretations of the best of American music. HFTRR recently had a major personnel change when Sam Doores returned to his own excellent band The Deslondes. Our previous HFTRR experience featured Deslondes as the opening band, and Sam guested on several tracks. This past week at Knitting Factory was our first HFTRR show where Alynda Lee was the sole front-person and the growth in both her stage maturity and ease in the spotlight continue to impress. But she’s still a kid at heart and it brought smiles when she told of her shyness at meeting one of her idols Lucinda Williams at SXSW this year. I couldn’t help but think that ten years or so from now young performers will approach their idol Alynda Lee with the same timidity. We’re streaming the Lucinda cover played this night. Hurray For The Riff Raff are currently on tour in selected US cities throughout April before they head to Europe for a handful of shows in May.

I recorded this set in our usual manner in this venue — Sennheiser cards at the soundboard mixed with a feed from talented house FOH Rob. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Thou: March 23, 2014 Saint Vitus – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Throughout their career Thou has been very prolific band, but their new album Heathen is actually the band’s first full length in four years and the first music they’ve released in over a year. The album is a powerful work that combines the band’s traditional doom metal with elements of shoegaze and post-rock to create a masterful work where the music truly compliments Thou’s lyrical vision. The tour reached NYC last week and we caught the Sunday night show at Saint Vitus. The band’s set consisted of five of the seven full songs from Heathen and despite some humorous in between song requests, it seemed as if the sold-out crowd was with them the whole way. Thou are currently on tour across the country throughout April but will return to NYC in July for several local shows.

I recorded this set with the Sennheisers mounted in front of the soundboard and mixed with a board feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Doug Keith: March 19, 2014 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

My first introduction to Doug Keith was as the talented multi-instrumentalist who has backed Sharon Van Etten in her rise from local favorite to international star. With the release of his new album Pony, Doug has stepped out from the shadows into the limelight without missing a beat. As he has been a loyal bandmate, as frontman Doug has reaped the benefit of good karma to gather some of the best musicians around to help with the album and the tour. Dinosaur Jr.’s guitar maven J. Mascis guests on the album’s “Pure Gold in the 70s” (live version streaming below), and the tour group is a band of all-stars featuring Zeke Hutchins from SVE Band on drums, and brothers Phil and Brad Cook from Megafaun (and a bunch of other projects) on guitars, keyboards and bass. At Bowery Ballroom last Wednesday, Doug’s set opening for The War On Drugs was a very satisfying forty-minute set that featured six of the nine tracks from Pony and one neat cover. With Sharon due to tour the world beginning in June, its likely that the solo Doug Keith will be on the shelf for a while. But we’ll have this special set to keep us until his return.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the War On Drugs set and except for a little bit of crowd chatter, the sound quality is equally superb. Enjoy!

The War On Drugs: March 19, 2014 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

March 23, 2014

the-war-on-drugs-50

The War On Drugs new album Lost In The Dream is a record that can only be adequately described in grand sweeping terms. This release is not simply in the “best of 2014” discussion, it will be considered one the best of this decade. There have been some lofty review ratings posted for Lost this week, and much effusive praise, but as we have chronicled the growth of this band and Adam Graduciel over the last five years, the album is a natural progression for a group whose two prior records were each superb. But Lost In the Dream changes the equation and ups the ante for The War On Drugs. The ten songs on this album are each microcosms of the work as a whole — the struggles and doubts of a man in his mid-30s grappling with passage of youth and the inevitable approach of middle age — each set to haunting and evocative melodies that echo in the ear even after moving on to the next track. The stories of Adam’s obsessions with the minutiae of the production of this albums have all been told. The man truly suffers for his art. But ultimately the musicianship finds itself equal to the songcraft. Lost is the first War On Drugs album where the songs are given a chance to breath and step outside themselves to reach remarkable crescendos. The lazy term would be that the songs “jam”, but these aren’t improvisations instead rather meticulously crafted passages. For instance, “Eyes To The Wind” hits its peak with a screaming guitar solo that segues to sax and then piano and back to guitar seamlessly and almost without the listener recognizing the lead change.

For the band’s current tour, Adam has assembled the core band but has added two ringers, multi-instrumentalists John Natchez and Anthony LeMarca. We attended the Bowery Ballroom shows on Wednesday and Thursday and if the album truly deserves the superlatives so in fact does the live show. On Wednesday, The War On Drugs worked through the entire Lost In The Dream (minus one instrumental track) and selected classic material in a 100-minute set that was stunning in its ability to not only capture the magic of Lost but expand upon its instrumental passages. We have never seen Adam more confident and in charge and on stage the band’s mood appeared both celebratory and all-business. There was even a champagne bottle poured into cups on stage on Wednesday. But if there is any sadness in this band’s triumph, its that this is almost certainly the last time The War On Drugs will play a room the size of Bowery Ballroom. Given how quickly and thoroughly the three NYC shows sold out, the band could have played five local shows without an empty seat. As the tour continues West and then ultimately moves to Europe, we expect that The War On Drugs will return to NYC in the Fall.

I recorded this set in our usual manner in this venue – Sennheiser cards mounted in the balcony and mixed with an excellent board feed, this time mixed by the band’s FOH C. Laszlo Koltay to perfection. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Unicycle Loves You: February 16, 2014 Radio Bushwick – Flac/MP3/Streaming

March 16, 2014
By

ULY Maks RB
(video stills from Maks Suski)

Unicycle Loves You have been grinding along making their fuzzy and melodic guitar-based psych-rock for almost a decade in an era among ultimately forgettable laptop and keyboard bands. In fact, they played our CMJ shows in 2009 and 2010 when they were living in Chicago, back in the days of “chill wave” and “glo-fi” and other nonsense one-dimensional buzz labels. A couple of years ago, Jim Carroll and Nicole Vitale got married and moved to New York. In June, ULY will release The Dead Age their first new album since Pop Candy called Failure an “album of the week” two years ago. Its seems though that raves from popular websites aside, the music world has finally caught up to ULY. Given the re-emergence of garage, psychedelic and psych-rock in popular circles the last couple of years, its not surprising that Spin Magazine premiered Unicycle Loves You’s new single “Face Tattoo” (our live version is streaming below). We caught the band at Radio Bushwick a few weeks back on a bill with Whiskey Bitches (previously posted here). It was nice to catch up again with Jim and Nicole and we are extremely pleased to report that they are playing better than ever — with an energy and immediacy that portends for big things in the very near future. Spin premieres aside, the new songs are all pretty tight and destined for a higher profile for a band that has deserved the recognition for at least the last half-decade. Unicycle Loves You have a few upcoming gigs, including Shea Stadium, Cake Shop and again at Radio Bushwick, dates here.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards on a small stand directly in front of the stage to capture the instruments and mixed with a soundboard feed to fortify the vocals. The results are outstanding, enjoy!

The Fleshtones: February 27, 2014 The Grand Victory – Flac/MP3/Streaming

March 9, 2014
By

Fleshtones Jaime Oriz

The last time I saw the Fleshtones was in the late 90s at the dear departed Brownies on Avenue A. At that point, I had seen the band more than a dozen times including a handful of times at Brownies itself. On this particular night though, the Fleshtones ended their memorable show in a unique fashion. As the last song came to a close the band unplugged their instruments, continued to play and walked through the crowd to the front of the venue and out the door to Avenue A. In front of Brownies waiting for the band was a flatbed truck onto which the band climbed and while they continued to play the truck moved south down the avenue and out of sight.

The Fleshtones live have always been a fun and imaginative band that not only celebrates the music but breaks down the fourth wall and involves the crowd in their show. All these years later, the band is still playing, recording and spreading their own version of garage rock around the world. A search for recent Fleshtones videos on youtube finds a bunch of stuff from Spain, Italy and Australia — the band remains big overseas if not remaining underground in the US. The Fleshtones are currently on tour in support of their new album Wheel Of Talent (Yep Roc) and we caught the opening night and CD release show at The Grand Victory. I entered the venue with a bit of trepidation that perhaps the Fleshtones were not quite as animated or energetic as I remember from the old days. But within seconds of the beginning of their set as Peter Zaremba walked the length of the bar, it became obvious that while the band is a little greyer and maybe a step slower, the Fleshtones still deliver the goods live. The set contained a healthy dose of Wheel material, but also welcome were some old nuggets including “Theme from The Vindicators (1980), and “The Way I Feel” from their first album Blast Off! (1978). The latter brought a dedication to the album’s producer Marty Thau who passed away a few weeks ago. But this was a night for celebration of the new album as Zaremba led intermittent human spinning wheels of talent to point to the next singer in the set. The result was a lengthy set (27 songs!) that was deserving of the Fleshtones of any era. The band may not have been escorted from the venue in a flatbed truck, but the infectious energy and enthusiasm is still very much present for the live Fleshtones.

I recorded this set by mounting the Sennheiser cards on the video projection shelf about 15 feet from the stage and mixed with a fine board feed. The room was instrument-heavy and the board is vocal heavy, but mixed together the results are superb. Enjoy!

Whiskey Bitches: February 16, 2014 Radio Bushwick – Flac/MP3/Streaming

I like bands that make me smile. At several points during the Whiskey Bitches set at Radio Bushwick last weekend I found myself grinning at the band’s infectious punk party anthems. The band is a relatively new trio that are making a quick splash locally. They won the Deli Magazine’s year old poll in December and have been gigging out a lot lately with a bunch of shows to come — we saw them again at Cake Shop on Thursday. And Whiskey Bitches have done all this with just two recorded tracks available as an EP on Bandcamp. We’re streaming “Funemployed” below, but the set included a bunch of new songs which the band will be recording in the next few weeks. Expect to hear a lot about Whiskey Bitches on this site and others, they’re going places.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted in front of the stage and mixed with a board feed. We’re a little concerned that the high ceilings caused a little boominess in this recording, but overall its a excellent list. Enjoy!

PUP
(still from this video)

The Toronto punk scene is one of the current hotbeds for music, and PUP is the latest band to emerge internationally. PUP won the CBC Best New Artist award in 2013, and the band recently signed to legendary US indie Side One Dummy Records. The band returned from a tour of Britain where they headlined at the NME Awards, and began another tour with a headlining show at Cameo Gallery on Friday night. As we reported back in October, this is not a band to miss. The band’s energy was at max throughout the set, as they rifled through a set of material from their album, one old request, and two punk covers. The band’s cover of Jay Reatard’s “My Shadow” made a bit of a splash on the web this month and the live version was as powerful as expected, but it was the surprise encore of the Dead Kennedys’ “Too Drunk To Fuck” that impressed with its humor and faithfulness to the original. We’re streaming that below. PUP’s current tour starts out West, crosses the US and lands in SXSW before coming East. PUP will play the Mercury Lounge on March 25. The album will be released on April 8.

We recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted high in front of the board and mixed with a fine matrix feed. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Jonathan Wilson: February 12, 2014 Bowery Ballroom – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Jonathan Wilson is a musician’s musician. When artists are in Southern California they invariably visit Jonathan’s studio, which was founded in Laurel Canyon, moved to a larger space in LA, and is credited with rejuvenating the music genre named after the region. Jonathan has produced albums from a variety of artists including Dawes, Father John Misty, Bonnie Prince Billy and Chris Robinson of the Black Crowes. His studio has also hosted studio jam sessions with an even wider variety of artists. He even recently toured with the Grateful Dead’s Bob Weir and has performed and recorded at Weir’s TRI Studios. So it comes as no surprise that Jonathan Wilson’s solo albums often contain a who’s-who of special guests along with the best available studio musicians. Jonathan’s most recent album Fanfare (Downtown Records) has been hailed as one of the best of 2013, and rightfully so. It expands upon the material from his well-received and successful debut album, 2011’s Gentle Spirit. While Spirit certainly cemented his Laurel Canyon influences, Fanfare is a more diverse and more intense album overall. At Bowery Ballroom on Wednesday night, we were not surprised that Jonathan Wilson’s band contained a striking amount of talent. The set began with the album’s title track and when the full band entered the song, it was obvious that the night’s musicianship would be paramount. Jonathan’s set was heavy on Fanfare material but also included several show-stoppers from his first album and an obscure Bob Welch-era Fleetwood Mac cover.. There were multiple highlights to report, including the set closing “Valley of the Silver Moon” which featured show-opener the legendary Laraaji and which extended to twenty minutes. We’re streaming our personal highlight, the extended version of “Natural Rhapsody” which contained a mid-song jam that resembled Miles Davis “Solea” from Sketches of Spain. We are also streaming the penultimate track, the straight forward folk-rocker from Fanfare, “Moses Pain”. Jonathan Wilson’s tour continues through the end of February in the South and Southwest before he heads to Europe for much of April. We’ll next see Jonathan when he plays the annual Mountain Jam Festival in June.

The sound quality of this recording is simply stunning, and that is because the show was mixed by the legendary British FOH Spike Jones. You’ll know you’re in for something special when you hear the first roll of the drums in the very first track. We used the Sennheiser cards for room feel and mixed it with the feed to create a recording for which we’re incredibly fortunate to have been able to capture. Enjoy!
