Pylon Reenactment Society: January 5, 2019 Market Hotel

Last week, it was announced that legendary Athens GA post-punk band Pylon will be releasing a comprehensive box set which will include all of their official releases, many unreleased tracks, and a 200-page book documenting the history of this incredibly influential group. Pylon Box will be available through New West Records on November 6, 2020.

For a band with such a lasting legacy, it was truly a blessing to have recorded the original band, including what was ultimately the last show the band played before the sad and untimely death of guitarist Randy Bewley in 2009. In 2014, lead singer Vanessa Briscoe Hay formed the Pylon Reenactment Society. At a gig we recorded at Mercury Lounge in July of 2018, it was clear that this new band was not just a tribute to the late great Pylon, but was a natural and organic continuation of the legacy of the band with top notch musicians who were friends with the original members. Our experiences motivated me to invite Pylon Reenactment Society to return to NYC in January of 2019 to perform at Market Hotel.

The Market Hotel show was yet another confirmation that although the original Pylon is a perfect subject for retrospective box sets, the current band is still a terrific outfit and a pure pleasure to experience live. This set included not only all of the classic numbers you’d hope to hear, but some extremely promising new material. In this current involuntary “break” from seeing shows, its great to remember the types of events that keep us coming back to see bands like Pylon.

I recorded this set with the installed AT mics mixed with an excellent soundboard feed from Eric. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Jeff Rosenstock: December 23, 2019 Trans-Pecos

April 10, 2020
By

Its honestly hard for me to be objective about this concert for some pretty obvious reasons — including my involvement with the venue. But the real reason is because Jeff Rosenstock is truly one of the best people in music today. Jeff played four consecutive Monday nights at Trans-Pecos in December, and each night benefitted a different charitable organization. Each night also was a collection of coats for the homeless. There was no set admission price to the shows, but a suggested donation. And Jeff and his fans really came through, as over $10,000 was raised over the four shows and the funds were sent to Safe Horizon, Willie Mae Rock Camp, Educated Little Monsters, and Black Lives Matter.

We talked and the final night was Jeff’s favorite of the shows. It also happens to feature the most excellent Laura Stevenson (congrats on the baby!) in a guest spot for a couple of songs. Jeff and Laura are long time friends who also played together in Bomb The Music Industry! and the energy between the two was obvious. As Jeff moved to LA at the end of 2019, this show was also a goodbye of sorts, so the emotions are palpable. All in all, a tremendous night for a variety of reasons, and a show we’re happy to offer as a glimmer of hope in these tragic times.

This set was mixed by Manny and recorded in the thumb drive of the soundboard and the quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

PLEASE CONSIDER DONATING TO THE GOFUNDME FOR TRANS-PECOS SO THAT WE CAN CONTINUE TO PAY OUR STAFF WHILE THE ENTIRE MUSIC INDUSTRY IS CLOSED DUE TO COVID-19. THE LINK IS [HERE].

Howlin’ Rain: February 21, 2020 Union Pool + August 7, 2019 Brooklyn Bowl

March 9, 2020
By

Howlin’ Rain rolled in from the West Coast into Union Pool a few Friday nights ago and proceeded to deliver a lick-filled, thoroughly jam-forward set that gave us all a quick reminder of why the band’s latest record is Under the Wheels: Live From the Coasts Vol 1. Many fewer bands cry out for the live album treatment as compared to those pushing bad-sounding, paint-by-numbers dreck. Rest assured that Howlin’ Rain are solidly among the good guys; not only does the new record boast an almost completely different setlist than this show, it’s also an outstanding recording that foregrounds Ethan Miller’s guitar pyrotechnics. If you attended this show and didn’t grip a copy of Under the Wheels afterward, I hope it’s because you already bought one.

As to this set, the band kept things loose, giving us seventy minutes’ worth of music in the form of seven songs, including a typically extended Calling Lightning Pt. 2″ and “Under the Wheels” — both of which feel like strong candidates for what I have to assume will be an Under the Wheels: Vol 2 at some point in the future.

We’re also offering a bonus recording here, with Eric PH’s capture of a Brooklyn Bowl barnburner from the band’s extended NYC run last year. It take the place of being there, but making a quick date with these recordings and the new LP ought to perk your ears for the band’s next trip through.

I recorded the Union Pool set with Doug Graham’s soundboard feed and Schoeps MK5 microphones; Eric recorded the Brooklyn Bowl show with his MBHO hypercardiods. Both recordings sound great. Enjoy!

High Time: January 20, 2020 Baby’s All Right

February 27, 2020
By
High Time at Brooklyn Bowl last year, courtesy of the band

“Never miss a Sunday show,” they say. It’s a direction local Grateful Dead tribute band High Time have taken entirely to heart, playing almost exclusively Sunday nights throughout Brooklyn venues. Never miss a High Time show is also a pretty good idea: sticking to (let’s face it) the highest quality Dead material from ’65–’74, High Time promise to perform “The Classic Psychedelic Rock N Roll Music of the Grateful Dead.”

I first caught High Time last year during a two-night stand at Union Pool, and on the hottest day of the year the band did some face-melting of their own inside the air-conditioned venue. I finally got to see them again last month at Baby’s All Right where they played matinee and late shows. It didn’t hurt that they brought along a couple of my favorite bands to open, MV & EE and Elkhorn. It’s a real testament to High Time’s engagement with music beyond the Dead—quality openers playing original, Dead-influenced music sadly isn’t the norm for tribute acts. But then again High Time aren’t exactly your run-of-the-mill Dead cover band. They bring a rare energy and spirit to the music, treating it as a living thing instead of putting it behind museum glass with an attempt to create a note-by-note facsimile. Playing intimate venues like Baby’s All Right, this is the closest you’re going to get to seeing the Dead at the Matrix without time travel.

There were many highlights from last month’s shows that I’m excited to share, but the pinnacle of these sets for me was the afternoon’s “Playing in the Band” > “Dark Star” > “Eyes of the World” > “Playing in the Band” suite, an absolute rager and you shoulda been there. But if you weren’t, have no fear because High Time will be back on Sunday (naturally) April 26 at Brooklyn Bowl. Check out the poster below and grab your tickets. A good time is pretty much guaranteed and you’re unlikely to find something better to do than a night of Dead tunes on a Sunday.

MV & EE: January 19, 2020 Baby’s All Right

It’s been a while since we’ve seen Matt and Erika playing together at MV/EE. Of course Matt’s been busy charting new frequencies with his latest solo record, Preserves, and jamming with his other duo, Wet Tuna. But really there’s nothing nicer than a cosmic Sunday matinee with the classic duo, who drove down from Vermont to open for Dead tribute band High Time. Even the traffic couldn’t dampen their spirits as they took a more relaxed drive with “East Mountain Joint,” followed by “Tea Devil,” and an extended ride on “Shit’s Creek” and “No $.”

This recording is a result of a combined effort—my onstage recording with the MBHO omnis and Baby’s FOH Alex Harwood’s soundboard recording. The sound is outstanding. Enjoy!

Kikagaku Moyo: November 15, 2019 Warsaw

November 18, 2019
By

If you’re like me, it was our friends at Beyond Beyond Is Beyond who first turned you onto Tokyo’s Kikagaku Moyo with their stateside release of the band’s second album, Forest of Lost Children. Judging by the sold-out crowd at venerable Greenpoint venue Warsaw this past Friday, quite a lot of people have now gotten the message. Besides the obvious (musicianship, attention to melody), one of the things that makes this band so special is their comfort with different styles, from instrumental jammers like “Dripping Sun” from their current LP Masana Temples, to delicate folk numbers like “Cardigan Song,” which they played acoustically along with an unreleased new song they’ve been working on during this tour. Those barely scratch the surface of all there is to love in this 80-minute set as this band’s virtuosity hits its peak, as they draw from both their compatriot forebears like Ghost to the wide world of American classic rock. This night felt like another step in these guys’ slow-built success (we saw them at Sunnyvale not that long ago), and we can’t wait to hear some of these new tunes laid down on record.

I recorded this set with touring FOH Eric Lemke’s feed, plus Schoeps MK41V hypercardiod mics. All credit here goes to Eric, as this room may never have sounded as good as it did for this set. Enjoy!

Eli Winter: September 14, 2019 Trans-Pecos

November 9, 2019

If you follow this site, you know that we are fans of “American primitive guitar” and have documented much of its greatest musicians in live performance. As examples, Daniel Bachman, Glenn Jones, Richard Bishop, Chuck Johnson, Bill Orcutt, Ben Chasny, and William Tyler have all graced these pages, often multiple times. If there’s a “wunderkind” of APG its our featured performer for today, Eli Winter. A native of Houston who went to college in Chicago, Winter has been around the scene since he was in his teens. The first time I heard a live recording several years back, it seemed pretty obvious to me that Eli Winter was a unique talent and a person with skills far beyond his modest years.

In 2019, the music world seems to have taken notice. Winter released his first full length record The Time To Come, and was selected by Ryley Walker to appear on a the Walker-curated release on Tomkins Square Records called Imaginational Anthem. In the Fall, Winter self-booked an fairly extensive tour of the Northeast and we were fortunate to be able to present him as direct support for the Walker/Grubbs duo show at Trans-Pecos in mid-September. Winter’s set was exactly what we had hoped to see — a showcase for a generational talent who could literally become the face of American primitive guitar in the decades to come. We fully expect to be attending Eli Winter shows for years to come, in progressively larger venues. But for now, this Trans-Pecos gig will suffice.

This set was recorded straight from the soundboard to a thumb drive. Due to the quiet nature of the show, the volume was quite low and elevating levels did produce some minor hiss. Otherwise, this is a quite listenable recording. Enjoy!

The days are getting shorter, which means it’s the perfect time for a little sunshine from One Eleven Heavy. The band concluded their US tour for Desire Path with this set at Trans-Pecos, slinging positive vibes and good tunes. A little shorter than their tour opener at Union Pool a couple weeks previously, this set nevertheless boogies pretty hard (and sounds a little better to boot).

I recorded this with MBHO mics in DIN stereo configuration at the stage lip, combined with a board feed from Trans-Pecos FOH, RL. The sound is outstanding. Enjoy!

Pernice Brothers: October 20, 2019 Mercury Lounge

October 30, 2019
By
Photos by PSquared Photography

The calendar year 1999 was one of great upheaval and positive personal change in my life and of the few records that soundtracked that eventful year, The Pernice Brothers Overcome By Happiness was right at the top. The album was a breakthrough of sorts for Joe Pernice, whose previous project the alt-country Scud Mountain Boys had disbanded after one album on Sub Pop Records. Overcome was a master work of perfectly written pop gems that touched on elements of alt-folk and chamber pop, and was an album created among a fellowship of Joe’s best friends at the time, including his brother Bob. There’s a great piece in Magnet Classics that describes the making the album [here].

When it was announced earlier this year that the Pernice Brothers would be returning with a new album for the first time in nearly a decade, I revisited Overcome and twenty years on, the album definitely stands the test of time. So kudos to my 1999 self for recognizing its brilliance and for continuing to follow the band through five more excellent albums before the hiatus. We were also lucky to have caught them live several times last decade, including at Mercury Lounge in 2006, a show I recorded mere months before NYCTaper became a thing. That Merc show it ends up would be the last Pernice Brothers show in NYC for thirteen years until this month.

The new album Spread The Feeling is a remarkable return to form for Pernice Brothers. The wit, wisdom, and melancholy that pervades the band’s catalog is clearly present, but this time around Joe Pernice tackles a variety of new subjects, including the abusive priests, drug abuse, and fatherhood, in a batch of songs that seem to be flexing more musical muscle than the band’s previous outings — albeit with virtually the same set of contributors.

The handful of dates that were announced included a return to Mercury Lounge and we were so pleased to be there and be permitted to record. What transpired was literally exactly what we had hoped to see. The band was tight and in great spirits, and the setlist featured both a substantial number of tracks from the new album, a nice selection of classic tracks, a classic cover, and quite a bit of a hilarious banter. And the early set time allowed me to fully experience this event, pack up, and go a few blocks to also see the Luna show we posted earlier. Quite an unforgettable night.

Joe Pernice announced on his active twitter account that the band will return with dates in the new year, and we’re hoping that includes another NYC show.

I recorded this set with the Neumann hypers mounted next to the soundboard and mixed with an excellent feed by FOH Manny. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Joshua Abrams Natural Information Society: October 4, 2019 Union Pool

October 29, 2019
By

It seems reductive to call Joshua Abrams Natural Information Society “jazz,” but language has limits that music does not. To quote our friend Eric PH in his own earlier review, “Mandatory Reality, the latest double-LP from Joshua Abrams Natural Information Society, sounds like a band erasing borders.” I couldn’t agree more — and this night’s single session, dubbed “Surveil Echo Analeptic” by Abrams, plumbs yet more deep territory, incorporating elements of drone, traditional North African music and, yes, jazz into a hypnotic moment. Joined on this night at Union Pool by the very special guest Jim White (Dirty Three, Xylouris White, etc.), Abrams (on the guimbri), Lisa Alvarado (harmonium), Jason Stein (bass clarinet) and White created a piece that felt free and otherworldly, but no less meticulous; Abrams is a master at creating an environment that elevates all players rather than restrain them.

In further good news, while Abrams’ catalog of releases on experimental Northampton, Mass. label Eremite Records are almost perpetually sold out, a second pressing of Mandatory Reality has appeared. Get it while you still can.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK22 “open cardiod” mics and a soundboard feed from Doug Graham. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Thanks to Joshua Abrams for permitting us to record and share the performance.
