Diane Cluck: February 17, 2015 Trans Pecos – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Ever since we captured Diane Cluck‘s inspired performance at Joe’s Pub in early 2013, I’ve been trying to work with Diane on a show. This NYCTaper Presents event at Trans Pecos was the culmination of that desire and frankly it could not have gone any better. On a cold Tuesday night in Ridgewood Queens, Diane, Jeffrey Lewis and their curated opener Kid In The Attic filled up Pecos and each performer delivered an outstanding set. This was the final night of Diane and Jeff’s East Coast tour and the night had a celebratory feel. Diane’s setlist featured a nice career-spanning selection of material with an emphasis on her newest and perhaps most consistently excellent release Boneset. After the main set when Diane asked for requests and a sharp fan asked for “The Turnaround Road”, the off-the-cuff version became my own personal highlight of the set. We are streaming it below. Afterwards, Diane was joined by Jeff for three songs before closing the show with perhaps her most well known song “Sara”. We thought that the show was over at that point but the still-packed crowd gave the performer an enthusiastic ovation and Diane returned for an encore. Diane Cluck will not be performing in the US until the Fall, but she will be on an extensive European tour in April and throughout May, dates here.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards on a stand at the front of the stage and mixed with a board feed. I didn’t raise my live levels enough during this set so that when the levels were boosted in post there are some artifacts of the process — mainly some hiss at quieter moments. Otherwise, the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

This Will Destroy You: February 27, 2015 Saint Vitus – FLAC/MP3/Streaming/Video

This Will Destroy You, of San Marcos, TX, just crossed the decade mark as a band last year, with the excellent record Another Language. In the broad sense, they share company with the dynamic instrumental bands that get lumped together as “post-rock” — Mogwai, Explosions In the Sky, Caspian, etc. But if this two-night stand of shows presented by BrooklynVegan at Saint Vitus proved anything, it’s that they don’t let labels stop them. Saint Vitus, best-known as NYC’s destination for the heaviest of heavy music, made a good fit for the band, as they led off with the thunderous “Little Smoke” that pummeled us from start to finish. TWDY may not be a black metal band, but their sonics are definitely toward the darker end of the spectrum, a kind of soundtrack to the end of the world.

But just when you think you’re going to get nothing but 80 minutes of soft-loud dynamics and blaring guitars, TWDY changes things up. Bursts of electronics seep in, between the ratcheting drumbeats and the mournful guitars of “A Three-Legged Workhorse”. Or there’s “Grandfather Clock”, basically a full-on IDM track, followed by the texturally dense standout track from Another Language, “Dustism”. But if the band proved there was more to them than just getting loud, when they were loud, they made it count, as on the climax to “Black Dunes” or “There Are Some Remedies Worse Than The Disease”. This show ran a touch longer than the previous night’s effort, closing with the ironically-titled “Quiet”. This burner of a Friday night show had been anything but.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V cardiod microphones and a soundboard feed of the mix by TWDY’s engineer (if you have his name, please give him a shout out). As with everything at Saint Vitus, the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Helmet: February 21, 2015 Bowery Ballroom – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Songs

It was a few decades ago that a friend of mine happened to spin Helmet’s landmark ‘Betty‘ album for me and set the hook for my enthusiasm for this band. Now touring to honor the 20th anniversary of this record, these dates include a front-to-back playing of it as well as a second set drawing from their vast catalog of songs. In a day and age where a number of bands are doing this, the kicker is that ‘Betty‘ is an amazing album and easily made it onto my personal list of “desert island discs” some time ago. The second of three very sold-out NYC area shows (the recording from the Saint Vitus gig is HERE) found Helmet firing on all cylinders. Frontman Page Hamilton has surrounded himself with a roster of superb musicians (drummer Kyle Stevenson, guitarist Dan Beeman and bassist Dave Case) and these concerts showcased a very well rehearsed and tight group that obviously have the chops to play anything you can throw at them. In addition to fielding a few crowd requests, Helmet dug out some deep cuts including “Impressionable”, “Repetition” and fan-favorite, “Sinatra”. In a nutshell, they sounded fantastic and more than lived up to the legacy of this material.

With Helmet’s soundman, Rubes, at the board with assistance from Bowery Ballroom’s FOH, Kenny, the venue’s sound on this night was, as we’ve come to expect, great. Combining our microphones with the soundboard feed that Page asked us to use, our recording is excellent. We hope you like what you hear as much as we did. Enjoy!

Helmet: February 22, 2015 Saint Vitus – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Helmet is taking a look back this tour and celebrating the 20th anniversary of their seminal album Betty beginning each show by playing the album straight through. On Sunday night the band added a special wrinkle by playing a small club the size of which they haven’t played in years. As Page Hamilton noted at the first break in the action, the “first Helmet show ever” was played at a club very similar in style, location and size to Saint Vitus — the late great Lauterbach’s in Brooklyn. For a time in the 80s and 90s, Lauterbach’s was the place for punk, hardcore and metal in the “outer boroughs”. And out it was, all the way in the South Slope on Prospect Avenue. And like the long gone venue, Helmet themselves are a product of that era in Brooklyn. As the band’s founder and only remaining original member Hamilton was a known quantity in music circles when Helmet formed in 1989, but there was a period when places like Lauterbach’s were their venues of choice. Helmet would go on to play a vast arragy of huge venues in the 1990s. While Saint Vitus in 2015 is an established and well-respected home for heavy music, its nice to see that Page has a sense of history — respect enough for the band’s legion of fans — to return to his roots and come “full circle” as he described. For this set, Helmet ripped through Betty in forty-five minutes staying pretty close to the album’s sound. The final half of the show has varied throughout this tour and on Sunday we got some rare oldies and of course the hits. I was particularly impressed with the raging extended version of “Driving Nowhere” which gave Page a chance to stretch out and display his guitar chops. We are streaming that track below. The Betty tour continues in the US and Canada through the end of March, dates here.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps mounted in front of the soundboard and mixed with a feed that Page earlier in the week had encouraged us to use. The sound quality is superb. Enjoy!

Mind Over Mirrors: February 5, 2015 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Since 2007, Mind Over Mirrors has been the solo outlet for Jaime Fennelly’s explorations with an Indian pedal harmonium processed through analog electronics and synthesizers. With the recent cassette release of The Voice Calling on Immune Recordings, Fennelly is joined by vocalist Haley Fohr, better known as Circuit des Yeux. At Union Pool, the duo played in near darkness, set up on the floor rather than on the stage, with Fennelly and Fohr facing inwards towards an impressive array of electronics. The crowd gathered around close as the room became a tight fit with the bulk of gear arranged mid-floor. The dark stillness punctured only by the swirling rhythms of Fennelly’s harmonium and Fohr’s ritualistic vocal paroxysms, the subtle glow of electronics and the occasional clinking of glasses at the bar. The three songs, all off of The Voice Calling, are played as a single piece, one subtly transmuting into the next. Performed live, each song eclipses its recorded counterpart’s length as if expanding to fill its new, larger container and seeking out new spaces to inhabit. The setting necessitates a hyper-acuteness to the experience and at the set’s conclusion there is a collective release of held breath as the tension between harmonium and voice resolves. It’s unclear if the collaboration between Fennelly and Fohr is intended to be long-term or whether it’s a one-off experiment; but either way, the results both live and on the album are compelling.

I recorded this set with the AKGs clamped to the balcony combined with a board feed from Union Pool FOH Leah. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Felice Brothers: February 7, 2015 Brull Foundation Benefit – Flac/MP3/Streaming

After the tour-de-force performance by Strand Of Oaks to open the Tommy Brull Foundation Benefit, any band might be hesitant to follow such a set. But Felice Brothers were the perfect style of band to do it. The intensity and poignancy of the Strand Of Oaks set was a great way to start the show, but for the Felice’s set it was truly party time. As the Foundation’s stage announcements made clear, the Brulls not only enjoy raising money for good causes but they also like to have a good time. And for the Felice Brothers raucous set it was easy to have some fun. The band played a lengthy set of material from throughout their career including five songs from 2014’s Favorite Waitress, and a crazy Neil Young cover to close the night. We were particularly impressed with the version of “Cus” (streaming below) and the ultra-rare “Ruby Mae” that featured some added lyrics that sounded like an old traditional folk song. The Felice Brothers are currently on a 3-week tour in Australia, and we’d encourage our friends down under to catch their highly entertaining set.

I recorded this set in the exact same manner as the Strand Of Oaks set and the sound quality is equally superb. Enjoy!

Nathan Bowles: February 12, 2015 Union Pool and January 31, 2015 Silent Barn – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

An canny, skilled and unpretentious kind of player, Nathan Bowles is nonetheless important not because of how he plays, but what he plays. There’s no shortage of banjo music circulating these days — the jam-band scene is filled with bands playing their own pabulum and covering the classic rock hits with the instrument, using it to deliver a little authenticity from the extra twang. Bowles’ career is the exact opposite of all of that — not only does he bring a new style and sound to Appalachian music, but he has an intrinsic knowledge of what a worthy song is, whatever its era.

First as a member of legendary Pelt, the multi-instrumentalist helped to make drone-based music that changed the conversation about what “folk” could be. With the Black Twig Pickers, he and his bandmates have gone deep into American history, both excavating and elevating lost and under-appreciated old-time music. Fitting, then, that his solo work, in particular 2014’s Nansemond, does some of both, giving us traditional Appalachian and Piedmont string music that’s infused with the sound and spirit of the modern avant-garde. Though “solo” in name, Nansemond is a full-band effort, allowing Bowles to produce tunes like the album’s bookends, “Sleepy Lake Bike Club” and “Sleepy Lake Tire Swing” that weave rich guitar textures around his virtuosic banjo work.

These sets at Union Pool and Silent Barn were true solo affairs, with Bowles the support act for Joan Shelley and Elisa Ambrogio, respectively. In front of two crowds that couldn’t have been more different, Bowles performed sets that delivered the full range of what’s meaningful about Nansemond. Both were all-Nansemond affairs that included the “Sleepy Lake” pieces and his straightforward medley of “Jonah and the Whale” and “Poor Liza Jane”. At Union Pool we got “Moonshine Is the Sunshine”, closer to the former numbers in tone, while at Silent Barn, Bowles added something more experimental to the reportoire, with “Chuckatuck”, a song in which Tom Carter’s guitar work figures prominently on the record. You could’ve heard a pin drop among the Union Pool crowd, who Nathan thanked, almost baffled, for how respectful they were. If playing for the younger crowd at Silent Barn — who’d already been treated to a couple of punk bands — represented an uphill climb, Bowles didn’t show it; if anything, the spare arrangement of “Chuckatuck”, extended by three minutes versus the album version, ought to go down as one of that song’s best takes.

The Union Pool set was recorded with a soundboard feed from the house engineer Rob together with my Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones, while Eric PH recorded the Silent Barn gig with a straight soundboard feed from the engineer Mike, with only a tiny amount of his AKG 480 cardiods mixed in.

Strand Of Oaks: February 7, 2015 Brull Foundation Benefit – Flac/MP3/Streaming

We’ve previously discussed the fact that Tim Showalter is simply a good guy — he has a compelling story of redemption, heartfelt lyrics, and close friends with whom he collaborates. Tim is a musician’s musician and when we were setting up early for the Tommy Brull Foundation Benefit last weekend we discovered another aspect of his life that impressed us. A big reason why Strand Of Oaks became involved with the Brull Foundation and their charitable work with the special needs Camp Anchor was because when he was younger Tim Showalter worked at a similar camp. Additionally, the Brull Foundation was created in the memory of Tommy, who passed away in a car accident. Tim suffered severe injuries in a near fatal accident a mere 15 months ago. Perhaps buoyed by the inspirational work behind the Benefit show and the memory of Tommy, at this show Strand Of Oaks put forth a performance of remarkable power and beauty. The band worked through nearly all of their breakthrough album HEAL before finishing with a neat Replacements cover, but throughout the set Tim and the band took time to recognize the purpose of the show and the memory of Tommy. For the very sold-out crowd, that recognition was much appreciated because many of the people in attendance either knew Tom or have a connection to Camp Anchor, or both. It takes a conscientious performer to appreciate the importance of occasion and step outside of their stage persona to acknowledge important issues. On this night, Tim Showalter was the right guy for that task.

Horse Lords take a collage-like, mixtape approach to song and setlist construction, balancing instrumental jams with electronic texture pieces. Rather than beginning and ending, songs morph into one another, blurring the lines between compositions and styles. Hailing from Baltimore, a city that’s become well known for its rich music scene, Horse Lords perform a tightly-wound mathrock that blends the influence of African polyrhythms with motorik beats. Opening up for Chris Forsyth & The Solar Motel Band at Union Pool, their set features four untitled tracks followed by their signature tune, “Outer East,” a twelve-minute jam that explores each aspect of their sound. That song also appears on their second album, Hidden Cities, which came out on NNA Tapes this past November. It follows a few self-released mixtapes and a self-titled LP on Baltimore weirdo label, Ehse Records. What’s impressive about their performance is each player’s ability to play in the spaces between the other instruments. Nowhere does it sound like like these guys are playing over one another, despite the complex interlaced rhythms. Percussion is central to their mission. Many tracks feature two drum kits, but there’s also a percussive element to the way the other instruments (guitar, bass, saxophone, and electronics) are handled. While it was a New Yorker recommendation for Chris Forsyth that ensured a packed house, the crowd was up for diverse and experimental music and Horse Lords elicited a well-deserved, rapturous response.

I recorded this set with the AKGs clamped to the balcony combined with a board feed from Union Pool FOH Leah. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Honey: January 28, 2015 Union Pool – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

Honey are a relatively new band who showed up hungry as the openers for Viet Cong at Union Pool recently. Composed of Cory Feierman on bass/vocals, Dan Wise on guitar/vocals and Will Schmiechen on drums, these guys showed up ready to play, putting even the very talented headliners on notice that mediocrity would not be accepted. The band members’ skill reflects some their resumes; one or more of them have been part of Amen Dunes, Psychic Ills and Stupid Party. Likewise, early invites to play with the likes of J Mascis, King Tuff, Endless Boogie, Crystal Stilts and Destruction Unit tell us that other bands are taking notice.

The band plays hard-charging rock n’ roll with a punk edge, reminiscent of an early, less self-serious Soundgarden. After choosing the bold leadoff of a cover of Can’s “Connection”, the highlights of this set for me were “Monk”, a pounding number that made a fine lead-in to “Motherfucker Longhair”. Wise got his best showcase on “Enough”, where he was left plenty of room to solo despite the abbreviated set time. Honey expects to have a new LP release in the next couple of months, which should only continue to raise their profile in 2015.

I recorded the set with Schoeps MK4V cardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from house engineer Doug. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!
