Jane Lee Hooker: September 8, 2014 Knitting Factory – Flac/MP3/Streaming

I’ve been interested in seeing Jane Lee Hooker for quite some time. The concept of the band — that is an all-female blues band made up of punk rock veterans — seemed interesting and potentially a whole lot of fun. When I finally saw JLH at Knitting Factory last week, any fears that the band might be a gimmick were very soon allayed. The dual lead guitars of Hightop and T-Bone were instantly recognizable as the driving force behind this band and that shouldn’t come as a surprise as both guitarists have deep pedigree as co-members of Helldorado and Hightop as a member of Nashville Pussy. Veteran punk rockers bassist Hail Mary and drummer Cool Whip are the backbone of the band and out front is the vibrant vocalist Dana Danger. As a unit Jane Lee Hooker is super-tight, reflecting not only their experience but musical familiarity among the members. But the real attraction is the raw energy that the quintet exhibits on stage. The setlist is a series of classic blues covers conveyed in an authentic style faithful the originals but reflected through the looking glass of New York punk. JLH is such a revelation that none other than legendary bassist Tony Maimone (Pere Ubu, Mekons) approached me and raved about the band, asking when the recording would be available. JLH recently returned from a local tour and will appear again in NYC next week at Mercury Lounge on September 24.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps cards mounted high next to the soundboard and mixed with a superb feed provided by house engineers Keith Milgaten and Ben Fitterman. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Tonstartssbandht: July 30, 2014 Palisades – Flac/MP3/Streaming

I made a concerted effort not long after listening to their new album Overseas, to memorize the difficult spelling of the band name Tonstartssbandht. I figured it was an investment to save time in the future. This site and this band are destined to be frequent partners moving forward — Tonstartssbandht seems to be a natural kindred spirit to this site. They play music in the most natural way, inspired by both their predecessors and their unique manner of creation — their live shows contain moments of improvisation and unlikely segues perhaps only possible when the band is a duo of brothers. The knee-jerk contemporary comparison is to Nashville brothers JEFF the Brotherhood, but really that band is a very different creature. While JEFF is a party duo fueled by 70s hard rock and Tennessee whiskey, TSB is an experience more akin to sharing some good herb on a muggy summer night. And speaking of Summer, in the heat of July we were fortunate to capture the band at the relatively new space on Broadway in Bushwick called Palisades. The venue was cool and inviting and has a very authentic Brooklyn DIY vibe. Its no surprise that premiere promoter Ad Hoc is booking a lot of events at the venue and this night was also one of their shows. In terms of performance, TSB were exactly as we’d hoped and maybe even a bit more. The set was like the Overseas record, a mix of songs and styles in a nearly continuous flowing set. The band only took a couple of breaks to talk to the crowd and the banter tracks are both natural and somewhat humorous, but then it was back to business. We are happy that the band was generous with their time and helped us complete the setlist for the recording. In reality, each track is really several numbers in a “medley” and we are streaming the “Susie Medley” as a prime example of what Tonstartssbandht does best.

But you need not take my word for it. Tonstartssbandht is back in NYC for a show at Mercury Lounge on Monday night, September 15. See you there!

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted on a stand at the soundboard about 20 feet from the stage and mixed with a board feed provided by venue FOH Ariel Bitran. The sound quality is very authentic to the sound in the venue and fully captures the experience from that night. Enjoy!

White Lung: September 3, 2014 Glasslands and September 6, 2014 Hopscotch Music Festival – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The band White Lung has been floating around for a few years, garnering positive review more than well-deserved. Their third LP Deep Fantasy (Domino Records) manages to improve on 2012’s Sorry, a considerable feat considering how strong this act was the last time around. Frontwoman Mish Way usually wins plaudits as the band’s special sauce, taking some of the best things we all used to like about Courtney Love (strong voice, personality, pop sensibility, distinctive look) and putting them out there in a more-focused package. But one ought not to lose sight of Kenneth William, without whose guitar playing this excellent band couldn’t be quite where it is, which is clearly a peak. As more than the sum of some quality parts, White Lung straddles that line between accessible punk and non in the best of ways, and the feeling is even better felt live. You don’t have to be a fan of this music, even, to be impressed by the tenacity and poise with which they do it.

Both of the site’s editors caught the band in the same week — first nyctaper in New York at beloved Glasslands, then acidjack as his final performance of the Hopscotch Music Festival in North Carolina, where the band proved that they were a righteous choice for the traditionally-strong spot of final night headliner in one of the festival’s many venues.

The Glasslands set was recorded with our installed Naiant cardioid rig mixed with a superb soundboard feed provided by house FOH Josh. The Hopscotch set was recorded with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones and a soundboard feed from the Hopscotch veteran engineer Wayne of Roanoke, VA, a man whose understanding of this high-ceilinged space deserves plaudits. Both sound excellent. Pick your poison, or do the right thing and download both. Enjoy!

Little Black Egg Big Band (feat. Steve Gunn, Georgia Hubley, Ira Kaplan, James McNew, Letha Rodman Melchior and William Tyler): September 5, 2014 Three Lobed / WXDU Day Show, King’s, Raleigh, NC (Donation Download)

SUPPORT LETHA RODMAN MELCHIOR IN HER FIGHT AGAINST CANCER. DONATE HERE.

This year’s third Three Lobed Recordings / WXDU co-produced Day Show during the Hopscotch Music Festival was an embarrassment of riches once again, featuring a number of one-time-only collaborations. But perhaps nothing was more hotly anticipated than the brief spring into existence of the Little Black Egg Big Band, named after Georgia Hubley’s solo guitar project Little Black Egg, which she has performed only rarely:  guitar luminaries Steve Gunn and William Tyler together with Hubley, Ira Kaplan and James McNew of Yo La TengoLetha Rodman Melchior also provided the pre-recorded material that was mixed and manipulated into the live recording.

Hubley, Kaplan and McNew’s participation in this event was brought about in part by their desire to support Melchior, a friend and fellow musician who hoped to join for the day show but was physically unable. Melchior, who has played music under her own name as well as under the alias Tretetam, and in the band Ruby Falls, was diagnosed with stage IV melanoma in 2010, which she has documented on a personal blog. Melchior’s illness has produced considerable financial hardship for her and husband Dan Melchior in addition to the agony of her cancer. An effort to offer further support to Melchior is also the reason why we are honored to offer this performance to the wider world today.

What the fans in the room at King’s in Raleigh saw at the show (along with those who heard it on the stream by Duke University’s WXDU) were five masterful musicians collaborating in real time on an at-times brooding, but oddly hopeful soundscape. Instead of soloing all over each other, each artist blended into a whole that spoke with one voice. Over its nearly forty minutes, the piece gains on itself in increments, with the bed of guitars and Melchior’s pre-recorded effects manipulated by McNew, a technique familiar to anyone who has seen him perform as Dump.

The piece honored Melchior as well as the spirit of the entire event, which celebrated the power of experimental music, the validity of independent labels and college radio, artist-run venues like King’s, and the ever-present, unquenchable thirst that the best artists have to evolve, change, and create. Three Lobed has a fan base primed to understand that this particular grouping probably wouldn’t be playing YLT classics like “Big Day Coming” with a bunch of extra guitars added in. What was expected, and what was received, was a unique offering that could exist only in this single moment. It was a performance for the benefit of people who believe the best artists never stop taking chances and are as generous with the product of their minds as they are with their time. People like the ones sitting on that stage.

This recording was made with Schoeps MK4V microphones in the center of the stage, combined with a stereo soundboard feed by the King’s staff. Because this download is offered for donation only, we are not streaming it, but you can trust me that the quality has been approved by the artists and is excellent. We are deeply grateful to all of the five artists involved for playing this show and for giving us the opportunity to help benefit Melchior and share this music with the wider world.

Thanks to Cory Rayborn, Ross Grady, Kelly Davis (and everyone else at WXDU), Paul Siler of King’s Barcade, Ira Kaplan, Georgia Hubley, James McNew, Steve Gunn and William Tyler for making this possible.

AT THE REQUEST OF THE ARTISTS, THIS DOWNLOAD HAS EXPIRED.

This recording raised approximately $4,000 in seven days for a worthy cause. We thank the artists and the others noted above, as well as all who participated, for their support of Letha Rodman Melchior.

Yvette: September 4, 2014 Hopscotch Music Festival, CAM Raleigh, Raleigh, NC (FLAC/MP3/Streaming)

Yvette represent the best things about New York, including their creative daring, uncompromising sound, and their homegrown fledgling label Godmode. When Pitchfork anointed their album Process with a positive an accurate review last year, the site’s Stuart Berman accurately described the duo as sounding “like an army”. Indeed, between drummer Dale Eisinger and vocalist/guitarist Noah Kardos-Fein produce a kind of high-intensity noise that brings to mind everything from mechanical sounds to the foreboding tones heard in certain kinds of Hollywood disaster films — if they were made by an industrial art-punk band.

This set took place at CAM Raleigh on the Hopscotch Music Festival’s first night, and despite the torrential downpour and the far-flung location, the band brought a dedicated crowd to the art museum’s cavernous performance space. This mix of new material and songs from their 2013 record Process was delivered as a seamless piece, further proving the duo’s impeccable timing. The set proved an emotionally taut thirty minutes, with dissonance tones flowing in and out of the frame, the sound hitting screeching climaxes before retreating into shadowed valleys. Yvette fall into that group of bands who are probably best experienced in the live setting, where the listener can’t flip away from band to band. You need to follow Yvette where they’re going, for the duration, to capture just how good they are at what they do. Thurston Moore was up next in an improvised set with Steve Shelley. Yvette gave him a tough act to follow.

I recorded this set with Audio Technica cardiod microphones split wide at the stage lip together with a soundboard feed. There stereo separation and sound quality in general are outstanding, among the very best of my recordings from the festival. This is offered as a streaming full set as well as a download below. Death of Samantha: May 29, 2014 Baby’s All Right – Flac/MP3/Streaming

0004-dos-05-29-14
[photo by Dave Cromwell – complete set at his blog]

As NYCTaper readers are aware, we are big fans of the guitar wizard Doug Gillard. So when it was announced that Doug’s first major band, Cleveland’s Death of Samantha would not only reunite but come to play a show at Baby’s All Right, we were obviously going to be there. Death of Samantha was one of the major midwest “gunk punk” bands of the late 80s who released three albums and an EP on pioneering label Homestead Records, but by 1990 they’d run their course and the members moved on two other projects — including stints by both John Petkovic and Doug Gillard in Guided By Voices. But last year DOS decided to have some fun with a brief reunion and the rehearsals went so well that they recorded the last one and put it out as a “compilation” type album — new live-in-studio recordings of the old songs called If Memory Serves Us Well. At Baby’s, memory did indeed serve all of us well as both fans and the band had a rip-roarding time blasting through the classics and even taking some time to stretch the songs out a bit. Gillard’s guitar work was superb as per usual, and he propelled the quartet throughout the evening. But Petkovic is ever the entertainer and his song performance, between-song banter and give-and-take with the crowd was both inspired and hilarious. As a result, the set was a ninety-minute enjoyable blast back in time and perhaps given the success of this brief reunion, not the last time we’ll see Death of Samantha together on stage.

This set was recorded by House FOH Devin, who provided a superb live mix of the multitrack. There are also cardioid microphones installed near the lighting rig about 15 feet in front of the stage. In post-production, I mixed the two sources and the results are quite excellent. Enjoy!

Heroes of Toolik: May 14, 2014 Cameo Gallery – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

August 28, 2014
By

IMG_7316

Heroes of Toolik are an art rock band from the New York/New Jersey area comprised of veteran players – Peter Zummo (trombone) is an avant jazzer (ex-Lounge Lizards), while Arad Evans (guitar/vocals) has toured with avant-noise luminaries Rhys Chatham and is a current member of the Glenn Branca Ensemble. Ernie Brooks (bass) was in the original Modern Lovers, while Jennifer Coates (violin/vocals) is an accomplished old style country fiddler with her own band, Jenny Gets Around. What comes together among the group of them is a brand of well-informed rock n’ roll that draws on these influences without over-complicating itself.

This show at Cameo Gallery served as a warmup for Heroes of Toolik’s just-released Aquarium School seven-inch, and found the band previewing that material alongside work from their 2012 debut LP Winter Moon. The band performs with the cohesive, relaxed vibe you’d expect of accomplished musicians, and the stylistic palette of these tunes reflected artists from the Velvet Underground to Zappa and Beefheart to hints (for me) of the Grateful Dead. The band gave us two takes of “Aquarium School”, which was also being filmed for video, the better of which came at the end of the set and is the version recorded here. We recommend you check out their upcoming gig on September 24 at the Zurcher Gallery in Manhattan, which should be a fine combination of an art rock band playing among visual artwork. The gallery is featuring work by Michael Dotson and Irena Jurek from now through just after the date of the show.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones and a soundboard feed from the house engineer, Brendon Clark. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Marah: July 26, 2014 XPonential Music Festival, Marina Stage (Camden, NJ) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

Marah‘s latest album, Mountain Minstrelsy of Pennsylvania, represents an audacious turn for the Philadelphia-based roots rock band, as the band decided to bring folk songs discovered in the 1930s screaming into the 21st century more or less intact (you can read more in our post from last month, here). For a band willing to do that, I guess having a ten-year-old join the band as a permanent member — on fiddle as well as guitar no less — seemed like an achievable feat.

If part of this audience at the XPonential Music Festival, presented by WXPN, came to take in the novelty of watching young Gus Tritsch take the stage, they stayed because he and the band were setting the entire outdoor Marina Stage on fire. In addition to rockified versions of the Mountain Minstrelsy songs, the band served up classics from their catalog like 2000’s “The Catfisherman” and the acoustic “City of Dreams”, about vocalist David Bielanko’s hometown of Philadelphia. As with the Bowery Electric show, we got to experience some of the band’s fiercest jamming on the hard-charging version of “Rattlesnake” transformed a great deal from the short-but-sweet album version into an epic sendoff.

I recorded this set with a flawless soundboard feed from the local engineer Tom, combined with Schoeps MK5 microphones flying back at the board. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Cross Record: March 14, 2014 Ba Da Bing / Northern Spy SXSW Showcase, Palm Door (Austin, TX) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

August 13, 2014

Before we caught up with Austin’s Cross Record at the private ranch show on the last day of SXSW (that recording here), the band played a full set to the Ba Da Bing / Northern Spy Records showcase back at the festival that showed a less intimate but somewhat bigger-sounding side of the band. Although it was easier to digest the band’s slowcore approach among the rapt die-hards at the ranch, this set found them sitting nicely alongside acts with a somewhat less reserved approach. Lead singer/songwriter Emily Cross gave a poised, poignant vocal performance, while the band, consisting of husband Dan Duszynski and Peter Frederiksen on guitar, made just the right amount of noise to make for a well-balanced and engaging set. While our recording was previously streamed in full over at Impose Magazine after the festival, we are pleased to offer it for download here for those who want it.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from the Palm Door staff coupled with Schoeps MK4V microphones. While some crowd noise is a distraction at points, the sound quality is otherwise quite good. Enjoy!

Gringo Star: June 14, 2014 Mercury Lounge – FLAC/MP3/Streaming Full Set

Gringo Star‘s formula ain’t hard to figure out, nor is it foreign to fans of the stellar garage rock that’s been pouring out of the Atlanta, GA area for the past several years. Helmed by the Furgiuele brothers — Nick and Peter — Gringo Star plays fun-loving, to-the-point tunes that find them in good company with other recent site favorites like fellow Atlantans The Coathangers and the West Coasters Night Beats. This late-night set at Mercury Lounge proved to be the kind of free-for-all you might expect, with the band as ringleaders. Their latest album, Floating Out to See, finds them in a slightly mellower, more textured mode on the LP, but in the tight confines of Mercury it all came out pure party music. I can only hope the after party was as much of a scorcher as this set.

This set was recorded by the Mercury staff directly from the soundboard and provided to us. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!
