You knew it had to be Northside Festival because the G was barely running… But that didn’t stop us from trekking up to Williamsburg for the excellent and right-up-our-alley Monofonus Press showcase with Spray Paint, Beech Creeps, Running, Matchess, and the Kid Millions/Jim Sauter duo. You know we’re fans, so I’ll spare you my fawning, but also know that Spray Paint have a new record out on Goner Records, Feel the Clamps, which came out June 3, and it’s awesome as usual. The band showed up prepared with a lot of killer new material from that album we hadn’t heard yet like “Styrofoam Garbage,” “Brat Beater,” and “Burn Barrel, ” alongside some (slightly) older gems like “Polar Beer,” “Middle Relief,” and “Rest Versus Rust.” This show wrapped up the band’s tour, but be sure to keep an eye out for some West Coast 2016 dates to be announced soon.

I recorded this set from our usual location in Union Pool with a board feed from FOH Robert. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Spray Paint: October 16, 2015 Union Pool (R.I.P. SVT CMJ Party)

Spray Paint

It’s been a mere six-ish months since we last caught Spray Paint. And in that time, the band has released not one but two new albums: Punters on a Barge and most recently, Dopers. Each album finds the band exploring new sounds and textures, but don’t think that they’ve abandoned their minimalist sound—these new tunes are still unequivocally Spray Paint. Dopers especially is darker than any material they’ve released previously, working up unsettling themes and making music you might use to soundtrack a Troma film. If you’ve heard Spray Paint before, these albums are more of what you love. And if you haven’t: meet your new favorite band.

In contrast to April’s show, which featured many of the bands earliest songs like “Spock Fingers,” “Squaw,” and “Pink Pus,” this one leans more heavily on the newer material. “Polar Beer” is one of the (many) highlights off Punters on a Barge so I was very pleased to hear that one live. “Thrash Master,” “Signal Master,” and “Bad Times” are off Dopers and my appreciation for them has only increased as I’ve absorbed the record. At their current pace I’m sure they’ll have some new music out soon—in the meantime, I’ve got some heavy listening to do.

Spray Paint wrap up their short tour with a record release show tonight (Oct. 22) at Hotel Vegas in Austin. Be sure and catch that if you find yourself out that way.

Austin treble-punks Spray Paint wrangle more of a racket out of two guitars and a drum kit than most bands do with twice the instruments. Their minimalist onslaught is one of restraint, confining their infectious riffing to two or three minutes at a go (save for the eight-plus-minute “Cory’s Theme” that I’ll venture to guess has yet to be performed live). They’ve got three albums under their belt—two for Sacramento’s S-S Records (one self-titled, the other Rodeo Songs) and their latest, Clean Blood, Regular Acid, on Austin’s Monofonus Press. Spray Paint must write ’em even faster than they play ’em because a fourth, titled Punters on a Barge, is due out June 1 on Homeless.

Spray Paint showed up looking slightly road-weary at Union Pool last week, supporting Pampers along with Monofunus label-mates Beech Creeps. Nonetheless they delivered an energetic set, playing tracks drawn from across their recorded output. Picking favorites is a losing proposition here, so excuse the list of songs that follows. “Spock Fingers,” “Pink Pus,” and “Squaw” all hail from their earliest 7″s on S-S, which are way OOP so you’ll have to monitor Discogs closely if you want to grip one of those. Off the S-S LPs, they play “Canadian Trash,” “Bring Dumpster Back,” “George’s Theme,” and “Ultimate Umpire.” From Clean Blood, Regular Acid it’s “Rest Versus Rust” and then they follow with a couple off the forthcoming Punters on a Barge, “Ian’s Theme” and an ode to baseball’s unsung middle relief pitchers, aptly titled “Middle Relief.”

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Beech Creeps set from the same night. The full assault of Spray Paint’s set is captured here. Enjoy!

Spray Paint will be touring Japan and Australia in May and June. Check their website for details.
