Thurston Moore’s post-2011 career has cycled through a few different styles and band names, from the solo-credited, introspective Demolished Thoughts to the punk-rock Chelsea Light Moving, then solo again with The Best Day for which the band toured as Thurston Moore Band, now the Thurston Moore Group. At least that’s how they were billed for last week’s stop off at Rough Trade NYC. But despite the fluidity of the band’s name, the lineup still includes Steve Shelley on drums, James Sedwards on guitar, and Debbie Googe on bass. Their followup to The Best Day is due out this year, making this Thurston’s longest-running post-Sonic Youth lineup. And it’s surely a good thing that this band has found their groove, as the material is also some of Thurston’s strongest.

Initially an intimate warmup for the band’s appearance at the Levitation Festival—scheduled for this past weekend but unfortunately canceled due to bad weather—this instead became a one-off gig that found the band relaxed enough to try out some material new and old. From The Best Day, they play  “Speak to the Wild” and “Germs Burn” (dedicated to Darby Crash). New songs from the forthcoming Rock and Roll Consciousness include a few we saw last year: “Cease Fire,” “Turn On,” “Aphrodite,” plus the newest, the twelve-minute highlight “Exalted.” Returning to the stage for four encores, the band digs back to Psychic Hearts for a few classics we haven’t heard in a while: “Psychic Hearts,” “Ono Soul,” “Staring Statues,” and “Pretty Bad.” “Ono Soul” gets stretched into a longer noise tribute, similar to the epic, sidelong Caught on Tape version recently released on Three Lobed’s Parallelogram set.

Late breaking news: the Thurston Moore Group will play an extra special set tonight (May 1st) at Baby’s All Right, with Lee Ranaldo opening. Tickets are only 15 bucks and are on sale now!

I recorded this set from our usual location in the venue with a board feed from Thurston’s FOH, Jack. The sound quality is absolutely outstanding. Enjoy!

Since the dissolution of Sonic Youth in 2011, Thurston Moore has kept pretty busy, between solo records, various one-offs, and noise records. Last year’s The Best Day finds Moore flirting with stretched out jams similar to Sonic Youth’s 2002 return to form, Murray Street. We caught up with Moore touring the new album last year at Saint Vitus, and while this set similarly covers most of The Best Day material, the band adds three new songs—“Turn On,” “Cease Fire,” and “Aphrodite”—scheduled to appear on the next album, which Moore says is titled Rock and Roll Consciousness and due out next year. By far the highlight of the entire hour-and-a-half show is “Turn On,” a ten-minute slow build that achieves liftoff in the back half. If this is what we can expect from the Thurston Moore Band’s second record together, I think we’re in for something that will surpass even the highest expectations.

Spectre Folk: March 15, 2015 Trans-Pecos – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

It’s been a little while since we’ve heard from Pete Nolan’s Spectre Folk. But with a new 7” out on New Images last year and Magik Markers on hiatus while Elisa Ambrogio tours her solo LP, now is the perfect moment for Nolan to reactivate his project. This past Sunday, Spectre Folk emerged for a late afternoon matinee at Trans-Pecos in an extended full-band lineup augmenting Nolan with Peter Meehan on guitar, Aaron Mullan on bass, and Steve Shelley and James Canty doubling up on drums. Like most Spectre Folk shows I’ve seen, this one is held together with duct tape, threatening to come untethered at any moment. But it never does, and the looseness of the approach is only endearing as the band relies on the chemistry between the players, feeling their way through a song rather than adhering to rote structure.

The band opens with “Mothership,” off their recent 7”, that song extending over both sides of the 7” and totaling around twelve minutes in its recorded form. Here it’s a bit leaner but retains the jammy nature of the original. “Blowing Tornadoes,” “Coke,” and “Please Don’t” appear to be new songs, while Spectre Folk staples “Sat Around,” “The Blackest Medicine,” and “Keep Your Teeth Clean” are off Compass, Blanket, Lantern, Mojo and the 2011 Woodsist EP, The Blackest Medicine, Part II. Spectre Folk shows are always a welcome event, but seeing these tracks fleshed out by the full band is an added bonus and I hope the appearance of new material means we’ll be seeing more of this lineup soon.

While there are currently no further scheduled Spectre Folk dates, you can catch Magik Markers at Cafe Nine in New Haven on April 30th.

I recorded this set with the mics set up at the stage in a 90 degree spread plus a soundboard feed from Trans-Pecos FOH Max. The left mic captures Nolan’s guitar and Canty’s drums while the right mic captures Meehan’s guitar and Mullan’s bass, with Shelley’s drums in the center. In post-production I cross-faded the guitars slightly to sound more central, while retaining the overall stereo sound of the recording. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Mike Watt & Friends: May 2, 2012 Le Poisson Rouge – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

To paraphrase the late Jerry Garcia, not everybody knows who Mike Watt is, but those who do really appreciate Mike Watt.  Having long been established as an elder statesman of punk, post-punk and alternative rock starting with the seminal Minutemen and the inspired fIREHOSE, his versatility has allowed him to play with many musicians of different stripes and genres.  He’s a bass player’s bass player; the go-to guy who you know will hold down the low-end duties superbly and is not afraid of working hard.  If it doesn’t already, his business card should read, “Have bass, will travel.”  That’s why when people in the know hear that Watt is coming to town, they run and don’t walk to get to the gig.

Initially announced as the NYC launch of his new book, ‘Mike Watt: On and Off Bass‘, and calling the event “Mike Watt & Friends”, word had it that he was also planning to dust off the Hellride East moniker (one of his many projects) and play Stooges tunes with J Mascis and Murph from Dinosaur Jr.  After an interview session with noted music writer Byron Coley, the music kicked off and it was indeed The Stooges from their first two excellent albums.  In his element, clearly enjoying himself and fingers hammering the strings, Watt and Mascis were the only two constant musicians during the set.  At any given time the drummers were rotating between Murph, John Maloney and Sonic Youth‘s Steve Shelley.  SY’s Thurston Moore took a turn or two on vocals as did Don Fleming, John Petkovic (also playing clarinet), Sharon Van Etten, Kurt Vile, Byron Coley and Noel Ford, the former soundman from the Continental (and current one for Dinosaur Jr.) or so I was told.  It was a whirlwind trying to keep up with the cavalcade of performers who kept jumping on stage.  With the pervasive sense of “what’s next?” in the air and the close proximity of all these great artists, the small Le Poisson Rouge felt more like a party at a friend’s house with a killer band than a concert.  That atmosphere prevailed even more so when the music ended and everyone milled around chatting and drinking while the guest of honor signed copies of his book and greeted all comers with a handshake.  A truly unique evening and, personally, I can’t wait for Mike to pop up here in our city again.  Wondering in just what permutation that will be should prove almost as much fun.

This night at Le Poisson Rouge presented a unique recording opportunity for us.  Rather than having to set up towards the back of the room so as not to be in the way, we were able to park our rig right at the stage lip and nearly dead center.  Recording in this manner makes the separation of the instruments and where they were on stage very distinct.  A monitor was just off to our right so while the vocals aren’t entirely centered, the overall effect is really cool and the next closest thing to being right up front at the show.  We hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!
