Coeds is an almost-brand-new electropop duo who graced the unofficial DC Against The World SXSW party with their very first show, which we are presenting here. The duo, consisting of Merideth Muñoz and Ryan Kailath, are geographically split between Austinite Meredeth and New Yorker Ryan. Even shunted into the relatively tight space in the front of the venue with a similarly humble sound system, the band’s knack for delivering hooks came through loud and clear. If you read this interview with Muñoz, you get a sense of what this band is about — putting their audience first, and doing whatever it takes to make that audience have fun. That’s exactly what made this first show, and first SXSW for the band, something worth seeing, and what I expect will serve Coeds well in the rest of their career.

This set was recorded with a minimal setup, DPA 4061 microphones mounted in front of one of the speakers on the “stage”. While the sound gives a decent impression of the sound of the event, please note that any limitations are the result of the technology being used, and not the skill of the band. We think that, this being the band’s first show, it is a moment worth documenting despite the reduced sound quality. Enjoy!

Since first seeing the Czech band Dva back at Trans Pecos in January, we were struck by the originality of their vision and the playfulness of their style. With their unique mix of instruments and influences — you’ll hear banjos and sax, latin jazz and electronica — the band doesn’t sound quite like anything, but little pieces of everything. This show found Dva closing out the Northern Spy / Ba Da Bing Showcase at SXSW, and it was the ideal way to end a party, with audience members joining the band on stage as they sent us into the night with “Mulatu”. This set did not focus entirely on their most recent release, Nipomo, but rather hopped around their catalog, serving up gems like the set opener “Nunovo Tango”. If you take SXSW for what it should be — a chance to broaden your horizons, seeing worthy acts that might not have been on your radar screen — you’d have been hard pressed not to call this Dva set one of the highlights of the week.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other recordings from this showcase, with Schoeps MK4V microphones and a soundboard feed. While the sound reveals some limitations of the venue acoustics compared to our previous recording of the band, overall it is quite good. Enjoy!

Given how hard all artists toil at SXSW, it’s probably impossible to anoint one the “hardest working” band at the festival. But Brooklyn’s Slothrust have to be in the conversation, having toured their way down to SXSW, played a slew of shows, and toured all the way back to New York afterward. That they did it all with a kickass attitude, and without any lapse in their musicianship, tells you about the character of this band. We’ve been rooting for them since their record release show back in February, and the band we saw on stage at the Ba Da Bing / Northern Spy Showcase down in Austin validated all the good things we said about them then. Frontwoman Leah Wellbaum and her bandmates tore through an absolute firecracker of a set that showed off songs from their latest, Of Course You Do, as well as a searing cover of Black Sabbath’s “Electric Funeral Fire” (streaming below). They weren’t afraid to stretch things out despite the festival-style time limits, and the long songs they delivered — especially “Magnets Pt. 1 and 2” and the set closer, “Beowulf” were burners well worth the run time.

Slothrust will be celebrating Record Store Day this Saturday with a show at Shea Stadium. Don’t miss it.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones in the optimum position in the venue and a soundboard feed. As with our other recordings from this venue, the sound quality is limited slightly by the boomy nature of the room, but overall excellent. Enjoy!

Cloud Becomes Your Hand: March 14, 2014 Northern Spy / Ba Da Bing SXSW Showcase (Austin, TX) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

The visual you’re seeing above is the members of Cloud Becomes Your Hand, gathered on the floor to perform a ritualistic outro dance as their instruments, still on stage, tick down the final minutes of their bonanza of a South By Southwest set. Of all the bands who played the Northern Spy / Ba Da Bing showcase this year, it was CBYH that I perhaps looked forward to the most. Their latest record, Rocks or Cakes, released in February, is a delightful dose of avant-prog weirdness that finds itself throwing traditional song structures out the window, or fucking with pop sounds so hard you don’t know what to make of them. The band’s electronic sounds are made not by a MacBook Pro, but by live instruments, some that I have to assume were custom-designed for the band’s purposes. Where CBYH succeeds and other bands fail, in part, is that their songs are actually good in addition to being “weird”; amid the layers of sounds are also melodies for you to latch onto, as on the standout track “Sand of Sea”, streaming below. This set found the band giving us most of Rocks or Cakes, and the songs were all the more impressive to see live. We expect to see great things from this Brooklyn-based band; don’t miss them when they’re back on the road.

I recorded this set in the same manner as my other recordings this night, with Schoeps MK4V microphones in the optimum position hanging over the crowd and a soundboard feed. The sound quality of this particular set is the best of the night, and is outstanding. Enjoy!

The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger: March 14, 2014 Northern Spy / Ba Da Bing SXSW Showcase (Austin, TX) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

April 6, 2014

IMG_6865

It may be true that not quite all the fans who packed Austin’s Palm Door for the first act of the Northern Spy / Ba Da Bing SXSW Showcase knew of the night of incredible experimental and underground music to come. But even if The Ghost of a Saber Tooth Tiger (GOASTT), whose unwieldy name hides its punchline well, were a bit better-known, they came humble, and they came hungry, despite a long day of shows already behind them. The band’s main draw is of course the presence of Sean Ono Lennon, who in this setup proves a capable bandleader next to his longtime girlfriend and bassist, the model Charlotte Kemp Muhl.

I watched GOASTT from soundcheck to completion, and what stuck with me most was how good their new music is. There’s a more Beatlesque rock streak to GOASTT tunes like “Too Deep”, “Xanadu” and “Animals” than there was to some of Lennon’s past work on earlier projects, and that felt right. The man’s a natural at writing and performing in that style, and the GOASTT neither over-relied on it — becoming a Beatles cover band — or shied from the family legacy. Ono Lennon and Kemp Muhl bantered gamely between songs, kidding about her Slash-like outfit (with bonus points for the vintage Slaughter shirt), giving the show a relaxed feel that carried forward for the rest of the night.

Along with the almost all-new originals from their forthcoming album Midnight Sun, the GOASTT added two covers, including Syd Barrett’s “Long Gone” and another from Golden Earring. As a five-piece (joined by Jared Samuel on keys, Tim Kuhl on drums and Robbie Mangano on guitar) the GOASTT is vastly more muscular than they sounded on their 2010 Acoustic Sessions release, and that is partly a reflection of their recent opening stints for the Flaming Lips and Tame Impala. Midnight Sun is on its way on April 29 via Chimera Music (note, this link seems to not be working, but you can also pre-order from Insound or Amazon). Many of these songs will be on it. Don’t miss.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from the Palm Door staff, combined with Schoeps MK4V microphones hanging from the optimal position on the floor. The sound quality is quite good, limited only by the rather boomy room. Enjoy!

Outer Minds: March 13, 2014 DC Against the World SXSW Party, New Movement Theater (Austin, TX) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

I wasn’t familiar with the Chicago psych-rockers Outer Minds before they hit the unofficial DC Against The World SXSW day show put on at the New Movement Theater improv club, but as with several bands at this outstanding showcase, I’m glad I am now. Outer Minds bring a distinctly classic flavor to their sound, abetted mainly by the dark organ melodies of Mary McKane. Vocalist/percussionist Gina Lira joins with McKane to provide a strong female counterpoint vocal harmony-wise to Zach Medearis, who brings serious Nuggets-era guitar stomp to go with his vocal attack. While the band excels at creating a general atmosphere, that doesn’t mean they can’t write a powerful pop song, too. “Shadows of the Moon”, streaming below, could’ve been as winning a number on the FM dial of old as it is now. We expect more great things from this band in the future!

I recorded this set in the same manner as the other recordings from this show, with Schoeps MK4V microphones and a stereo soundboard feed. The quality is limited only by that of the rented PA. Enjoy!

Cross Record: March 15, 2014 Post-SXSW Private Show (Dripping Springs, TX) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

March 20, 2014
By

IMG_6972

There was no shortage of hate for SXSW this year, and there are some good and less-good reasons why. Let’s just say that when a member of one band attending this mostly-musicians-only post-SXSW get-together at a remote ranch in Dripping Springs, Texas described this show as a “cleansing experience”, nobody argued. The worst aspects of the festival are opposed not only to what music is about, but what musicians are about. Musicians, for the most part, are a gentle, generous sort of people. The whole point of their endeavor is to give.

Cross Record were the hosts of this particular event, and their humble attitude is reflected in the way you hear vocalist/guitarist Emily Cross talk about how much time she has left, when it’s her band’s event. Luckily her husband Dan Duszynski, her main co-conspirator, was there (along with Peter Frederiksen on guitar) to remind her there was no time limit. The band played in a living room looking out on the Texas hill country, an area I was previously aware of only through a themed barbecue restaurant (you can take the New Yorker out of New York, but….). Then again, the Cross Record gang aren’t exactly rural sorts themselves. Cross and Duszynski moved to the Austin area from Chicago, where they built up a loyal following for their brand of “drone-folk”. Whatever you want to call it, their songs unfold slowly, carried on the slow boat of Cross’ voice and dual guitars, with minimal percussion. Among bands of recent vintage, the closest comparison I can think of is Philadelphia’s excellent Family Band; among better-known acts, I’d offer up another wife-husband unit, Low. To my mind, both of those are high compliments.

Cross Record are recent signees to Ba Da Bing Records, who are releasing the remaining physical copies of their latest album Be Good and, with any luck, giving them the push they need to break to a wider audience. Be Good is a special record, with Cross’ deeply personal songs embedded in hypnotic atmospherics that don’t overwhelm her voice, one of those you can’t believe is coming out of a woman that small or young. This show was stripped back further still, with the band offering up three of their own songs, including two from their previous album, Magnetic Current, along with two lovely covers — Merle Haggard’s “I Can’t Hold Myself In Line” and Townes Van Zandt’s “Don’t You Take It Too Bad”. After almost a full week of intensity in Austin, standing in crowds half-paying attention to too many bands who had lost the plot, it was cleansing indeed to see Cross there, guitar on her shoulders, singing her heart out, backed by a kick drum and a couple more guitars. It was a righteous thing. It did right by South By Southwest.

I recorded this set with my Schoeps MK4V microphones right in front of the band and their simple PA setup. It’s a perfect reflection of what it sounded like to be sitting there. Enjoy!

The Coup: March 13, 2014 SXSW, New Movement Theater (Austin, TX) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

March 19, 2014
By

IMG_6824

NYCTaper isn’t known for live hip-hop, and I believe this is a first for us. Having now had the experience of seeing The Coup, I hope it’s not a last. The leftist, legendarily excellent Oakland crew blew my mind in this performance at the unofficial DC Against The World SXSW day show put on at the New Movement Theater improv club by CHIRP (the Chicago Independent Radio Project) and Fredericksburg All Ages together with sponsors Rogness Brewing Company and Bitch Beer. As a live act, it’s almost not fair to call The Coup “hip-hop”, as their sound is at least as firmly rooted in funk and vintage soul. Sure, frontman Boots Riley spits out rhymes like a machine, but behind him is a crack band of incredibly talented players whose virtuosity goes well beyond what lifted samples can do. Not to mention Silk-E, the band’s singer, who’d be a force on her own anywhere in the soul/R&B genre.

Boots asked us if it was our first Coup show, and a majority of hands went up. Too bad for us, because they are one of the best live bands I’ve ever seen. It didn’t matter that it was the middle of the day on a Thursday in a poorly-lit comedy club, or that they had another show to crank out just a couple hours later. From the first seconds of “Everythang” The Coup were bouncing, hands and bodies in the air, and so were we. Boots kept whipping the crowd into a frenzy with songs from all over the band’s catalog, including “The Guillotine” and “You Are Not A Riot” from their latest, Sorry To Bother You, as well as nuggets from their earliest work, including the previously-mentioned “Everythang” and “Five Million Ways to Kill A CEO” from their breakout 2001 record, Party Music. If the point of playing SXSW (if there’s any at this point) is to introduce yourself to an unfamiliar audience, to broaden your fan base by proving your worth the old-fashioned way, then this Coup set was a resounding success. Then again, it would’ve been by any measure. This is a group of master showmen, and they’re gonna bring it no matter what the circumstances.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones hung from a pipe up close and dead center in the venue, combined with a soundboard feed from the engineer of the day, Mike. Keep in mind that the New Movement Theater is designed for improv comedy and not music, and realize that this is the sound of a massive band using less than all of their equipment (not enough DIs were available) on a rented PA through a minimal board. While the sound quality is an accurate reflection of the room and the heroic efforts of all involved, there are a few technical glitches (feedback, etc.) here and there. The fault for those lies in the circumstances and limitations of the day, and not any deficiency on the part of the band, the organizers or the production crew. I believe this is a compelling set, and if it gets you off the fence about seeing The Coup, it has done its job. Enjoy!

Pujol: March 15, 2012 SXSW at Longbranch Inn Impose Party – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Pujol announced today a show in NYC on October 11, 2012 at Mercury Lounge. We were fortunate to have captured a live performance of Pujol at SXSW in March, at the Impose Magazine party “Imposition” at the Longbranch Inn. Pujol is the recording project of Daniel Pujol from Nashville TN, and at SXSW the live band was a trio. Their set at Imposition was one of the most impressive of the bands that I had not previously seen. This was unselfconscious power punk with fine musicianship but which didn’t take itself too seriously. In the interim, Pujol has released their first proper album UNITED STATES OF BEING (Saddle Creek Records), and this set featured four numbers from the new record among a set of seven songs. We’re streaming “KEEPER Of ATLANTIS”, an older song that opened the set with a bang.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser 8040s set up at the rear of the room and mixed with a board feed. Other than the mumble of crowd chatter apparent in between songs, this is an excellent recording. Enjoy!
