Steve Gunn‘s tenacity and prolific output have paid off. When I saw the man mentioned in Rolling Stone in conjunction with his latest, Way Out Weather, which also received favorable notice in all the right places, I felt that sense of vindication that sometimes the mainstream gets it right. Properly hailed in that magazine as a “six-string legend”, what is perhaps more notable about Gunn’s recent turns is his growth as a vocalist. More than a few guitarists’ careers have foundered when the man stepped to the microphone, but Gunn’s vocal turns, particularly on his last two records, have only broadened his appeal. You’d be mistaken if you ignored instrumental triumphs like Boerum Palace and Ocean Parkway (or his Golden Gunn effort with Hiss Golden Messenger), but Gunn has established himself now as a capable traditional frontman as well as one of the most exciting guitarists of his generation.

This show celebrated the release of Way Out Weather in Gunn’s hometown, and he and the band arrived exhausted but loose from a too-long stint on the parking lot of I-95. The show began almost informally, with the band’s soundcheck seguing into a jam that became “Water Wheel” from Time Off, followed by “Old Strange” from that album in a similar, extra-extended mode. Gunn took his time between tracks to chat about the meanings of songs (“Wildwood” came from a lot of time on the Jersey shore as a kid; “Milly’s Garden” arose out of conflict with a nosy neighbor) and joke with the crowd. The vibe was both homecoming and celebration, as it should have been. The title track and “Tommy’s Congo” already feel like live show standards, offering Gunn ample opportunities to shred on guitar. Likewise, he and the band didn’t hold back on the encore number, “Lurker”, a song celebrated for a while now as one of the best examples of Gunn’s vintage blues. Gunn’s exposure to the world has been a bit like his music, unfolding without hurry, at his own pace. Here’s to more people spreading the word.

MV & EE are an underground band in the purest sense, the kind of band who self-releases an LP after scads of others have come out on (admittedly obscure) labels and still presses tasty CD-Rs of their best-loved live sets. They exist on exactly that plane you might expect for a Vermont band, doing things their way, happy to earn the love the slow way, through swapped tapes and late-night listening sessions on porches and in basements. Their sound, a sort of far-out experimental folk, is homegrown and not easily replicated. Having seen the band twice this year already, I noticed now more than ever that no two MV & EE sets ever seem quite alike, and Matt Valentine and Erika Elder seem so in tune with one another that no song needs to hew to a single version, either.

This set at the  Three Lobed / WXDU Day Show at King’s during Hopscotch Music Festival was the only one by an outfit that had actually played a night-time festival set (the night before at The Hive), but that didn’t mean MV & EE were willing to dish out the same thing twice. In keeping with the vibe of this show, this set went to the more noisy end of the spectrum, especially on the delicious combo of “Roll On>Mayan Feedback” from this year’s self-released record Alpha Lyrae. Valentine and Elder have been on a bit of a roll lately tour-wise, so they may be off the road for a bit, but check back at their website for all the band’s latest info and releases, including their new seven-inch split with Woods with both bands performing Pink Floyd’s “Green is the Colour”.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones on stage coupled with a soundboard feed from the King’s staff. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

If you’re not a denizen of noise/experimental circles you might not be aware of the legendary Sunburned Hand of the Man, the Massachusetts band who since 1994 have produced several fine albums and over 100 releases (mainly self-released CD-Rs and cassettes) in what it might be fair to call “random” fashion. The band has included any number of players over the years, but is anchored by John Moloney, who joined us at last year’s Three Lobed / WXDU Day Show during Hopscotch Music Festival for a collaboration with Thurston Moore (which is slated as an official release … keep your eyes peeled). This was the collective’s 20th anniversary as an entity, and it seemed like the right move for King’s, and a show sponsored by two organizations that respect experimental music, to be their showcase.

Eleven years after being featured on the cover of “The Wire” and touted as being leaders of the “New Weird America” genre, the band had been somewhat dormant in recent years, as releases slowed and band members focused on other projects.  In June, the band departed on their first U.S. tour in several years, a brief jaunt down the east coast as a 7  piece band, including newer, younger band members alongside seasoned vets.  On that trip, plans were solidified to take part in this years’ Three Lobed day show during Hopscotch.  Sunburned’s membership is always in flux; on tour, it has often been whoever was available to get in the van when the time came to hit the road.  For the brief September tour built around this Day Show performance, they were a tight, 5 piece unit and included Chad Cooper, who co-founded the band with John Moloney, but had not toured with the band in the United States since 1999.  Longtime guitarist, Paul Labrecque was along for the ride as well, giving us a look at a version of the band not seen in the U.S. in quite some time.  Talking to the band before their set, there was a palpable excitement from the players about the music they had been making each night of their tour, and what was to come during this afternoon set.

Like the band’s recorded work, this single piece, entitled “Blues For Richard”, was deeply outre, a melange of organic, found and electronic sounds that brooded and whistled. At its beginning, the piece felt unsettling, like a late-afternoon hike into an unfamiliar wood. Band members began the set on the floor, turning knobs that would anchor the piece’s future movements. What there were of lyrics came just over twelve minutes in, in the form of chants and spoken/read lyrics, supplied by Greta Svalberg.  As the guitars turned up and the drums kicked in, the atmospheric sounds turned to a slow burn, psychedelic groove, pushed and pulled by Moloney’s expressive drumming and Adam Langellotti’s elastic bass.  Labrecque’s guitar work becomes more and more frantic, while Cooper’s homemade electronics continue to ramp up the intensity.  The band threatens to collapse upon itself a couple of times, coming out on the other side heavier and insurgent each time, before finishing in a blazing, explosive three minute stomp that melted a few faces.  In short, this half hour set is an excellent summation of everything that makes this band great, unpredictable, and worthy of exploring their vast catalog of recorded music.

I recorded this set in the same manner as all of the recordings from this showcase, with Schoeps MK4V microphones onstage and a soundboard feed. The sound quality is phenomenal on this one, maybe the best of the entire day show (which is saying a lot). Enjoy!

As I said in our last post about the co-sponsored Three Lobed / WXDU Day Show during Hopscotch Music Festival, one of the things that made this best-curated-of-the-fest day so special were the number of one-off collaborations that went down. Nathan Bowles has been all around the scene for a while now, lending his banjo and other skills to such diverse acts as the drone wizards Pelt, the Appalachian-influenced Black Twig Pickers, Steve Gunn, plus his solo work. Daniel Bachman, who has been on the site twice, is as prolific as he is talented. His latest release, Orange Co. Serenade appeared on the tiny North Carolina imprint Bathetic Records around the same time that the Virginian chose to relocate to Durham, NC.

For this very special first-time collaboration, Bachman and Bowles (joined by local guitarist Zeke Graves) chose to pay tribute to classic southern sounds, first serving up an acoustic version of Jeffrey Cain’s “Moonshine Is the Sunshine” from his 1970 album For You, followed by the legendary North Carolina guitarist Link Wray’s “Waterboy”, which turned into a massive sixteen-minute guitar freakout with Graves and Bachman’s dueling electric guitars backed by Bowles doing a turn on percussion. From the day’s first act, we ended up hearing one of the highlights of the entire show.

I recorded this set, as with all of these sets, with Schoeps MK4V microphones on stage and a soundboard feed from the King’s staff. The sound quality, particularly on the Link Wray song, is outstanding. Enjoy!

This year’s third Three Lobed Recordings / WXDU co-produced Day Show during the Hopscotch Music Festival was an embarrassment of riches once again, featuring a number of one-time-only collaborations. But perhaps nothing was more hotly anticipated than the brief spring into existence of the Little Black Egg Big Band, named after Georgia Hubley’s solo guitar project Little Black Egg, which she has performed only rarely:  guitar luminaries Steve Gunn and William Tyler together with Hubley, Ira Kaplan and James McNew of Yo La Tengo. Letha Rodman Melchior also provided the pre-recorded material that was mixed and manipulated into the live recording.

Hubley, Kaplan and McNew’s participation in this event was brought about in part by their desire to support Melchior, a friend and fellow musician who hoped to join for the day show but was physically unable. Melchior, who has played music under her own name as well as under the alias Tretetam, and in the band Ruby Falls, was diagnosed with stage IV melanoma in 2010, which she has documented on a personal blog. Melchior’s illness has produced considerable financial hardship for her and husband Dan Melchior in addition to the agony of her cancer. An effort to offer further support to Melchior is also the reason why we are honored to offer this performance to the wider world today.

What the fans in the room at King’s in Raleigh saw at the show (along with those who heard it on the stream by Duke University’s WXDU) were five masterful musicians collaborating in real time on an at-times brooding, but oddly hopeful soundscape. Instead of soloing all over each other, each artist blended into a whole that spoke with one voice. Over its nearly forty minutes, the piece gains on itself in increments, with the bed of guitars and Melchior’s pre-recorded effects manipulated by McNew, a technique familiar to anyone who has seen him perform as Dump.

The piece honored Melchior as well as the spirit of the entire event, which celebrated the power of experimental music, the validity of independent labels and college radio, artist-run venues like King’s, and the ever-present, unquenchable thirst that the best artists have to evolve, change, and create. Three Lobed has a fan base primed to understand that this particular grouping probably wouldn’t be playing YLT classics like “Big Day Coming” with a bunch of extra guitars added in. What was expected, and what was received, was a unique offering that could exist only in this single moment. It was a performance for the benefit of people who believe the best artists never stop taking chances and are as generous with the product of their minds as they are with their time. People like the ones sitting on that stage.

This recording was made with Schoeps MK4V microphones in the center of the stage, combined with a stereo soundboard feed by the King’s staff. Because this download is offered for donation only, we are not streaming it, but you can trust me that the quality has been approved by the artists and is excellent. We are deeply grateful to all of the five artists involved for playing this show and for giving us the opportunity to help benefit Melchior and share this music with the wider world.

MV & EE are one of those acts that’s so prolific, and whose output is so varied, one would be a fool to try and summarize it all. Cosmic voyagers Matt Valentine and Erika Elder began their journey more than a decade ago, combining Indian raga style with deep psych and damaged Appalachian folk into something wholly new and often unexpected. The duo has a mini-residency going this month at Baby’s All Right, a relatively new Williamsburg venue and restaurant that’s as good-looking as it is inviting. Elder and Valentine served up two sets’ worth of material that covered a range of their career, including songs from their latest, Shade Grown. Building gradually, the first set began with the early slow-burner “Beautiful Mountain”, then “Tea Devil” from the band’s Three Lobed release Country Stash, and “Leaves” from their Woodsist LP Space Homestead, ending with the countrified twang of “Shotgun Willie”. Set two found Valentine and Elder kicking off with “Shit’s Creek” (also from Space Homestead) before taking things into the deep jam zone, as an extra-heady “Too Far To See”,  flowed into an extended jam before landing on a cover of Pink Floyd’s “Green Is the Color”, jamming into the beat-backed “Cocola Parabola”. This show whetted our appetite for the band’s next appearance at the venue this coming Monday, which is a free show. If you haven’t had a chance to check out MV & EE, not to mention Williamsburg’s finest new venue, this is your chance.

This recording was made with a full multitrack digital fileset generously provided by house engineer Devin Foley, together with my Schoeps MK4V microphones at the stage lip. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Everyone ought to pause once or more at a festival full of big, bombastic noisy bands to revel in the simple beauty of a solo player who is expert at his instrument. Such was the case for those lucky enough to witness Cian Nugent‘s performance at the Fletcher Opera Theater during Hopscotch Music Festival, where the Irish guitarist wowed a pin-drop quiet crowd eagerly anticipating a rare U.S. show. Like virtually every solo acoustic guitar player, Nugent earns comparisons to masters like John Fahey, but the combination of the influence of his home country and the American heartland gives Nugent’s compositions a different flavor than the work of U.S. contemporaries like Danny Paul Grody or Daniel Bachman. Those craving some electric non-solo Nugent would be wise to check out the Desert Heat (Nugent, Steve Gunn, John Truscinski and Jason Meagher) set we posted here, as well as his outstanding upcoming release on Brooklyn label No Quarter, Born With the Caul, which you can pre-order now.

After getting a preview of what was to come last year at Hopscotch Music Festival, we expected Chuck Johnson‘s 2013 record Crows In the Basilica to be an important part of the conversation on best guitar records of the year. That was confirmed both by Basilica’s release on Three Lobed Recordings this spring, as well as by this performance at Mercury Lounge, where Chuck demonstrated that the subtle brilliance of his compositions can’t be contained by the studio.

Chuck and his contemporaries are almost always categorized by the label “American Primitive”, a sub genre of guitar playing shared with its progenitor John Fahey and many other worthy players, but the term “primitive” as understood by most is misleading. Rather than suggesting a simplicity or naïveté to the material, American Primitive is best understood as a recognition of the ability of these players to use highly complex guitar arrangements that link the instrument’s present with its more elemental, folk-derived origins. Before venturing out as a solo player, Johnson played in well-regarded North Carolina bands like Shark Quest and the string trio Idyll Swords, but it is here where Johnson’s skill on guitar is best appreciated. We hope you will enjoy this moving set of music from Johnson and be on the lookout for his future shows.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones from our usual spot in the venue, plus a soundboard feed provided by Mercury team. Given that it is a recording of a single instrument, the recording heavily favors the soundboard feed, with a bit of audience mics mixed in to give a feel of the room. It is an excellent recording. One of the pillars of the Three Lobed Recordings catalog has been some of the incredible new American guitar music being made across this country – everything from work by the late Jack Rose to Lee Ranaldo and Steve Gunn. The Oakland (but formerly North Carolina) guitarist Chuck Johnson developed his main Three Lobed connection through the Chapel Hill, North Carolina band Idyll Swords, when they appeared on an ambitious multi-CD box set, purposeful availment, that was among the label’s first releases. While his latest record, A Struggle Not A Thought, finds Johnson engaging with his thoughtful meditative side with some stunning 12-string guitar compositions, Johnson was a well-known traveler in Chapel Hill’s still-vital 90s-to-early 2000s indie rock scene, playing in the bands Shark Quest and Spatula as well as Idyll Swords. Johnson was the second act of the day at the Three Lobed / WXDU Day Show during the Hopscotch Festival in Raleigh, NC, and provided a rather stark counterpoint to the madness of the Alan Bishop / Bill Orcutt / Chris Corsano trio that preceded him to kick off this incredible show at King’s Barcade. This lovely set of guitar music featured several new songs, as well as “A Slender Thread”, “Dissevered” and the flawless set closer, “The Flying Spire Don’t Have No Mercy” from A Struggle Not A Thought.  While Johnson got hit with a few random bursts of the feedback from PA (which we have edited out of this recording), the technical snafu didn’t throw him off his game in what was, for many of us, our first introduction to his live show. I hope to see many more.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed and Schoeps MK5 microphones in the omnidirectional setting on stage. This particular set leans almost entirely on the soundboard feed, and other than the aforementioned technical issues being edited out, the quality is excellent. Enjoy!

The guitarist Steve Gunn joined longtime collaborator John Truscinski (with whom he comprises the unit Gunn-Truscinski Duo), and bassist Justin Tripp (along with Laura Ortman on violin for most of the set) for a very special trio performance to benefit the guitarist Tom Carter. Carter, who has worked on many projects over the years but is best known for his work in Charalambides, contracted a serious form of pneumonia while on tour in Europe, and has incurred significant medical bills while being treated in intensive care and, more recently, at recovery centers in both Germany and the United States. This show at 285 Kent, sponsored by the Issue Project Room, was designed to raise funds for Carter’s ongoing recovery. The community of avant-garde guitarists and musicians is incredibly tight-knit and supportive, and this contribution in New York was one of many efforts to support Tom around the world.

This set consisted of both new material and work from Gunn’s two most recent LPs for Three Lobed Recordings, one highlight of which was “The Lurker”, Gunn’s side from the out-of-print Three Lobed 10th anniversary box set. For that song, Gunn & co. were joined by Marc Orleans, who most recently collaborated with Carter on the Northern Spy Records release Eleven Twenty Nine. The song, like much of Gunn’s work, showcases a range of styles and unique phrasing, and Orleans’ participation made it all the more memorable. Streaming below is a rollicking full-band version of the 2012 Gunn classic “Trailways Gramble”, which appeared on Three Lobed’s compilation of work of eight outstanding American underground guitarists, Eight Trails, One Path. While a lot of this night’s crowd may have been there for the headliner, Thurston Moore’s Chelsea Light Moving, it was perhaps this unique collaboration of guitar talents that was the most fitting tribute to Carter and the work he has done to this point in his life. nyctaper and I recorded this set in our usual manner for this venue with Sennheiser MKH-8040 microphones and a soundboard feed. While 285 Kent can always be a bit of a challenge with quieter acts, we feel this is a recording of excellent quality. Enjoy!
