Tim Presley: January 26, 2017 The Bowery Ballroom

Though we’re well acquainted with White Fence, Tim Presley has for the time being shelved that band in favor of going solo under his own name. The first record to appear as such is the The Wink, a buzzed and jittery work which was produced by Welsh musician Cate Le Bon, also Presley’s touring partner. The album is a departure from the fuzzy garage psych of White Fence, as Le Bon’s presence pushes Presley into intimate and unexplored territory. As I mentioned in my review of her set from the same night, Le Bon and her band also backed Presley for his opening set. Listening to the two side-by-side, you’ll notice a cohesive presence and song structure between them. Presley and band played the entirety of The Wink, in order, save for “Moment,” from his experimental W-X side project. Incidentally, no White Fence tunes were played until Cate Le Bon’s encore when she and Presley did a duet on “Chairs in the Dark.”

I recorded this set from our usual location in the venue slightly to the left of soundboard in the balcony area, with a board feed from Bowery FOH Kenny. As usual for the venue, the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Cate Le Bon: January 26, 2017 The Bowery Ballroom

Cate Le Bon’s been awfully busy since we last saw her in 2014: in 2016 she released her fourth (and excellent) LP, Crab Day; she produced Tim Presley’s (also excellent) LP, The Wink; and last Friday she put out a followup to Crab Day, the companion EP Rock Pool. Fittingly, on her current tour with Tim Presley, Le Bon is pulling a double shift, contributing guitar and vocals in Presley’s backing band before playing her own headlining set. I’ll talk more about Presley’s set when we post it shortly, but the music on The Wink is so informed by Le Bon’s production that the night felt less like two co-headlining sets and more like a conjoined, ongoing collaboration between the two musicians. Later on in Le Bon’s set, Presley joined in on guitar for “What’s Not Mine,” a cover of Presley’s White Fence tune “Chairs in the Dark,” and “Are You With Me Now?” While Le Bon and Presley were obviously the focus of the evening, it would be criminal not to mention their crack shot backing band featuring JT, Stephen Black, and Daniel Ward. This set showcases mostly songs from the off-kilter Crab Day, two new ones from Rock Pool (“Aside From Growing Old” and “I Just Wanna Be Good”), plus a few older tracks like “No God,” “Greta,” “Sisters,” and the fan-favorite “Are You With Me Now?” The Le Bon/Presley tour soldiers on for a few more dates (here) and if you have the chance I highly recommend you not miss out on this one.

I recorded this set from our usual location in the venue slightly to the left of soundboard in the balcony area, with a board feed from Bowery FOH Kenny. As usual for the venue, the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

White Fence: October 26, 2014 Baby’s All Right – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Back in October, White Fence was on an extensive tour that criss-crossed through NYC a few times, including during CMJ week when they played a bunch of shows. We were lucky to catch the band twice in less than two weeks at Baby’s All Right. The mid-October recording was featured on the site contemporaneously with the show but the second night at the Panache Hangover Brunch has waited until now. This White Fence set started at about 7 p.m. but certainly felt later as we’d been in the venue since the early afternoon. We’ve already posted two sets from this day (Juan Waters and King Gizzard) and the White Fence set was really gravy for one of the best complete days of music we had all year. White Fence did not replicate the set from earlier in the month as they mixed up the setlist and swapped in several different numbers. But as we had previously experienced, the current White Fence quartet (with Cate Le Bon on guitar) is a unit that has been together for a while now and the performance was tight and energetic. We are streaming “Sandra” below — a near perfect performance that had the band smiling at the end.

This set was recorded by House FOH Devin, who provided a superb live mix of the multitrack. There are also cardioid microphones installed near the lighting rig about 15 feet in front of the stage. In post-production, I mixed the two sources and the results are quite excellent. Enjoy!

White Fence: October 13, 2014 Baby’s All Right – Flac/MP3/Streaming

When I think about CMJ week, White Fence always comes to mind. It was 2011 when they played our show — a frenetic set that was one of the best if not the actual best set ever in the many years we’ve presented CMJ parties. Three years later, White Fence has become exactly what we believed possible back then — a consistently excellent band that has produced a plethora of remarkably pure and faithful sixties and seventies styled psychedelia and garage rock in 3 to 4 minute bursts of goodness. The band now records for Drag City Records and their latest album is their first for this excellent label. For The Recently Found Innocent is also the first album recorded outside of Tim Presley’s home studio and he chose an excellent collaborator to help produce this album — the equally prolific Ty Segall. Found Innocent is a more conventional White Fence album, although it certainly does not deviate from the the band’s overall sound. Last Monday, White Fence was back in town and they will be on the East Coast through CMJ week. Their set at Baby’s All Right was a headline spot on an excellent three-band bill and it didn’t start until almost 1am on a school night, but the crowd for the most part stuck around. Tim has employed a couple of new players for this touring band, but the result was consistent with prior live White Fence experiences. The live show gives a different energy to the material and the songs take on altered arrangements from the recorded versions. The Baby’s set maintained a high energy for over an hour and while the setlist covered much of the new album, it was two older numbers where the band stretched out and jammed a bit. “Baxter’s Corner” has for years been the go-to for extended performance and this night it was again a burner, but also “And by Always” was a sprawling treat and we are streaming that number below.

This week White Fence will be playing at least four CMJ shows, including the Panache Booking CMJ “Hangover Brunch” at Baby’s All Right on Sunday where they will be playing an acoustic set. We will be there to record that special set.

This set was recorded by House FOH Devin, who provided a superb live mix of the multitrack. There are also cardioid microphones installed near the lighting rig about 15 feet in front of the stage. In post-production, I mixed the two sources and the results are quite excellent. Enjoy!

White Fence: September 18, 2013 Glasslands – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Its hard to believe that it had been since early 2012 since we had last seen White Fence live. We were so impressed with the band’s high-energy authentic mid-60s styled psychedelia at a gig opening for Woods at Bowery, and then again at the NYCTaper 2011 CMJ show. I was also lucky to catch them at SXSW 2012. Last Wednesday at Glasslands, it was encouraging to see that eighteen months later, White Fence continues to churn out kinetic proto-psych with confidence and abundant energy. Tim Presley’s supporting band seems to be the same group that he had at SXSW ’12, and at Glasslands they were tight and in perfect sync — certainly necessary to keep up with the quick chord and tempo changes in the music. For instance, we’re streaming “Baxter Corner”, a song that is two minutes on record but live is stretched out to almost seven — a lengthy high-tempo jam that features the talents of each member of the quartet. The setlist contained quite a number of older songs, but also featured a heavy dose of the newest White Fence album Cyclops Reap (Castle Face Records). After this outstanding show, we hope it won’t be another eighteen months before we see White Fence again.

I recorded this set with the installed NYCTaper rig at Glasslands, and the sound quality is superb. Enjoy!
