The Blind Shake: October 27, 2013 285 Kent – Flac/MP3/Streaming

When Thee Oh Sees toured last month, John Dwyer brought Minnesota’s The Blind Shake on the road with them. Last month, we saw Blind Shake twice in NYC, but much preferred the more intimate 285 Kent set. The band plays an angular brand of garage punk, not dissimilar from Thee Oh Sees, but with a decidedly less 60s feel and perhaps a bit of a post-punk edge. Their set at 285 was fast and furious — the band literally took no significant breaks in between songs, so that they played 13 songs in barely 30 minutes. The Blind Shake have two full albums, an EP and several singles and their most recent record Key To A False Door is on Dwyer’s Castle Face Records. The setlist drew from their releases and also seems to include some unreleased tracks. The band just completed a lengthy US tour, so there are currently no dates but we’ll be sure the catch The Blink Shake when they return to NYC.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Thee Oh Sees set and the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Lou Reed died on Sunday morning, October 27, 2013. If that fact is important to you, then by now you’ve read the hundreds of excellent tributes across the web. The man was complicated, but one thing is for certain — his vast and ubiquitous influence over multiple genres of music and musical lifestyles will be felt for generations to come. So it was abundantly appropriate that on the night of his death, one of New York’s premiere DIY venues — in a warehouse no less — hosted one of the country’s premiere garage-rock bands. I don’t think its a reach to say that if Lou Reed’s life had not taken the path he began nearly fifty years ago, 285 Kent and Thee Oh Sees would not exist, or at least exist in the way they do now. ToddP recognized the importance of the evening, as his house music was all-Reed for virtually the entire night. And as Thee Oh Sees were about to take the stage, the ipod mix queued up “Walk On The Wild Side”, and a natural and spontaneous cheer arose from the packed house. As John Dwyer approached the mic, he dedicated the set to Lou, and began to play. And play they did. Thee Oh Sees are one of today’s most engaging live acts, but this performance was special. Each song was a bundle of kinetic energy and it seemed as if the crowd was of one mind, moshing in beat to every single song for this meaty and lengthy set. The band is on tour to support their latest album Floating Coffin, and while the setlist included more than half the album, there were also plenty of old favorites. Thee Oh Sees play locally again tonight (Tuesday October 29), at Irving Plaza. As of this writing, there are less than 100 tickets left. We’ll be there, and if you’re reading this, hopefully you will be too.

I recorded this set by mounting the Sennheiser cards on the beam ten feet from the stage and mixed it with a fine board mix. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

The way that the brothers Jennings, Van and Lain Carney – aka Pontiak – are able to live their lives as musicians is about as far from the New York experience as you can get. Where our musicians live in cramped apartments, borrow or rent practice space, and live near the places where they play, the Carneys record and practice their music on their own farm/studio in rural Virginia, where they decamped to after a five year stint in the Baltimore scene, where they played with compatriots like Arbouretum. The brothers’ rural location has given them flexibility to record how and what they want that their urban counterparts would surely envy. But it does mean a very long drive when you want to do a one-off show for the Northside Festival.

Given the distance involved, and the fact that the band tours much more regularly in Europe, I was honored that Pontiak agreed to co-headline our second annual Northside Festival showcase at 285 Kent. For me, Pontiak was not just a band that I liked and hoped would play a showcase; to me, it is a band that distills to its essence what is right and good about live music. Their sets are unpredictable, drawing from a deep catalog of nine releases, and they take fearless and surprising turns stylistically, even from song to song. Yes, Pontiak are unquestionably a “heavy” band, but that simple tag belies a huge range of influences you can hear in their material. They can evoke Sabbath-style riff-driven metal, stoner rock, psych rock, indie rock, southern rock and math rock, and they can even showcase a quieter, more acoustic side. The band’s most recent EP, Comecrudos, which predated this year’s excellent full-length LP Echo Ono, was a five-part piece inspired by the drive from Marathon, Texas to Phoenix, and featured guest musicians on horns and deep, penetrating psychedelic guitar musings. Echo Ono, on the other hand, “cuts out all the bullshit” (as Van Carney put it to the A.V. Club) and is a much more straight-ahead psychedelic rock album than some of their earlier work.

As a live band, it’s also fair to say the Carneys cut out all the bullshit. Up on the stage with their stripped-down selection of vintage gear cranked to ear-blistering levels, the brothers tore through this 40-minute set with few pauses or breaks. As always, the interplay between the brothers was deft and natural, and their material showed the full range of their catalog.  Although several tracks from Echo Ono were played for the first time (for me), my personal highlight was when the band slowed things down a bit to play Part III of Comecrudos. We could not have been more honored to have them on stage on our behalf.

nyctaper and I recorded this set in the same manner as the other sets of the night, with Sennheiser MKH-8040 microphones, Audio Technica microphones split wide at the stage lip, and a soundboard feed. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

it seemed that the NYCTaper 2012 Northside Festival showcase provided an ideal time for bands to try out different sets and arrangements and be a bit more adventurous with their setlists and performance. White Hills, who I had seen more recently than the other bands who played, gave a set that focused on some of their classic, most exploration-friendly numbers, and duly impressed both first-timers and White Hills vets. We knew we were in for something special when “Song of Everything” from the band’s latest LP, Frying on this Rock, was the second song in the set, flowing straight into “You Dream You See” from that same record. But the track that followed, “Let the Right One In” from the band’s 2010 record, White Hills, was what sealed it for me as my favorite White Hills set yet, with its slow build to its cosmic climax. The closer, “Polvere  de Stelle”, also from White Hills, was equally a highlight. The Hills are the type of band that always keeps things interesting, and even in this festival-length format, they were able to give us that and more.

nyctaper and I recorded this set with Sennheiser MKH-8040 mics in our usual spot in the venue, plus Audio Technica 3031 mics at the stage lip and a soundboard feed.  The resulting wall of sound is an outstanding representation of the night. Enjoy!

Rhyton is the latest project helmed by Dave Shuford – best known for his work with No Neck Blues Band and D. Charles Speer and the Helix – and compatriots Jimy SeiTang (Psychic Ills) and Spencer Herbst (Messages, Matta Llama). I have been an admirer of Shuford’s for awhile now; he is a musician’s musician, who pursues his vision relentlessly without regard to genre, style, texture or time. While Shuford has played everything from country-blues to Greek folk music during his career, Rhyton expresses he, SeiTang and Herbst’s experimental impulses. The band’s first self-titled LP is a masterwork of improvisation – the result of a three-day recording session, the record captures the raw, live feel of these players at their best.

I invited Rhyton to be the second band at the NYCTaper 2012 Northside Festival Showcase in hopes of seeing the exact kind of set they delivered – a two-segment, free flowing live jam so new that these songs did not have formal titles. This is music that rewards set and setting, and the post-industrial 285 Kent space, with its psychedelic wall art, was the perfect venue for the band’s mind-bending style of playing. While we (and the band) would have loved for it to be longer, Rhyton’s set hinted at the new thrills to come on their forthcoming Three Lobed Recordings LP The Emerald Tablet, due out later this year.

I recorded this set with Audio Technica 3031 microphones split wide at the stage lip, combined with a soundboard feed, to create an upfront, “in your face” style of recording that provides maximum separation between instruments.

The first thing you notice at most EULA shows these days is the high number of photographers. Looking at the fine photography we are offering with this post, it’s not hard to see why.  I have said before that Alyse Lamb is one of the most compelling frontwomen in the scene today, with the kind of onstage energy, musical chops and look (complete with DIY stage outfits) that makes people pay attention. The first time I saw this band, I was completely blown away by their raw energy and their ability to completely give themselves over to their performance. I invited them to be the first act at our 2012 Northside Festival showcase pretty much the next day, and I am thrilled that I did. This performance at 285 Kent completely raised the bar on that earlier show. The band tore through their ten-song set in under 30 minutes, barely coming up for air between songs as Lamb howled and writhed like a consummate rock star. This set was both grittier and better than I have seen the band before [ed. was it the bourbon?] and set the tone for an incredible night of music. Better yet, several new songs were played that are not on the band’s debut album, Maurice Narcisse.  Still, I found that album’s title track to be one of the show’s high points, as the band delivered a searing, slightly improvised take on the song.

I recorded this set with a new method we have not used in this venue before, placing a pair of Audio Technica 3031 cardiod microphones directly at the stage lip and combining that with a soundboard feed to boost the vocals (which are still a tad low in this mix).  The results are incredible – literally like being in the front of the crowd.  Enjoy!

DIIV: June 8, 2012 285 Kent – FLAC and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs (including rare Nirvana cover!)

Beach Fossils‘ Zachary Cole Smith is such an unabashed Nirvana fan that he named his new musical project “DIIV” after the band’s b-side “Dive”. This Friday night madhouse of a show at 285 Kent headlined by DIIV as a “secret guest” had much of the same  joyful chaos as the better shows of Nirvana’s pre-Nevermind career. A full house packed 285 until it was a virtual sweat lodge, teeming with teenage bodies flying through the air, moshing and having a hell of a time (this all-ages show was also a celebration of somebody’s graduation). DIIV tore through a good chunk of the numbers from their soon-to-be released album, Oshin, with Smith ruling the frenzied proceedings like a man who wasn’t sweating bullets. The highlight of the night for me was an homage to Nirvana, when the band covered an extremely obscure unreleased Cobain song known to bootleg collectors as either “Bambi Slaughter” or “Creation”. Even if DIIV aren’t exactly Nirvana (yet anyway), the show was a reminder that rock n’ roll isn’t supposed to be tidy, or clean or safe – it’s blood on the floor, bodies in the air, sweat soaking your shirt, heads banging, hair flying. It’s wonderful, isn’t it?

This was a very difficult recording environment and situation. The extreme levels of humidity and heat in the club played havoc with both the onstage equipment and my equipment, and there is some distortion in both the soundboard feed and in my microphones as a result. I spent several hours working on this to make it was good as I could, but it is still not a very good recording by the standards of this site. That said, it is still quite listenable, and an accurate representation of a very interesting and fun night.

Thanks to Ian Perlman for the setlist, and the inspiration to try and mix this thing down right.

Oneida: May 12, 2012 NYCTaper Anniversary Show at 285 Kent – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

These first five years of NYCTaper have been as unpredictable as they have been profoundly enjoyable. The very act of capturing live music can be exhilarating, but when taping becomes part of an entire subculture that introduces you to new and exciting acts on a regular basis, and allows you to access the act of live musical creation of a band like Oneida, there are really no words to describe the experience. We asked Oneida to play and to curate our 5th Anniversary show and were overjoyed when they accepted. The band has been an important part of NYCTaper over these five years. We’ve recorded them in their own studio for a day’s worth of jams, we recorded them in the old Knitting Factory and the new Knitting Factory, I woke up pre-dawn to record them as the sun rose over the East River in Brooklyn, we’ve captured three of their CD release events. Its been a great ride, and a couple of Saturdays back at 285 Kent, the amazing journey continued. Oneida invited James McNew and Greg Fox to join them on stage for the set. The band then launched into an eighty minute set of entirely new material, and completed the show with another exercise in Oneida boundary-breaking. We are streaming “Bad Habit”, a song that begins in the style similar to Oneida’s “kraut-rock” material, but which detoured into a lengthy noise-rock jam. The final song is called “Reputation” and it was an obvious highlight, as it transpired over an astounding forty-eight minutes as the double-drum attack led the charge through a trip of musical peaks and valleys with a few pit stops in between. As an analog to our amazing first five years of existence, we could not have asked for a more appropriate set closer.

Acidjack and I recorded this set in a manner we had not previously accomplished. I took four discreet tracks from the board into my R-44, while acidjack recorded four channels of audience microphones — the Schoeps mounted center and above the stage, and the Sennheiser cards mounted on a beam 10 feet from the PA into his R-44. The eight channels were synced live. All the tracks were mixed in Soundforge fairly equally in post-production. The result is a professional quality multitrack recording with superb quality. Enjoy!

We had the privilege this month of celebrating this site’s fifth anniversary with a show at 285 Kent headlined and curated by Oneida, a band we have long admired and been honored to feature on this site many times. Their first choice of act for this bill was the enigmatic Prince Rupert’s Drops, a band with little Internet presence or official releases to speak of, but one that blew us away with their British-influenced psychedelic sound. What this band lacks in visibility is more than made up for by their playing, led by the charismatic playing of lead guitarist Bruno Meyrick-Jones and second guitarist (and vocalist) Leslie Stein. This 6-song set stretched to nearly 40 minutes with luxuriously paced songs, especially “Death March” which, despite the name, was not a death march to listen through. Most of this material appeared to be new aside from “Pillar to Post”, which streams on the band’s MySpace page and was also a highlight of their set. It has been a privilege to share live music with music fans across the world for the past five years, and a big part of that has been the chance to give more exposure to bands like Prince Rupert’s Drops.

nyctaper and I recorded this set with a combination of high-end microphones placed strategically around the room. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

MMOSS: May 5, 2012 285 Kent – Flac and MP3 Downloads + Streaming Song

One doesn’t normally think of Dover New Hampshire as a home for neo-psychedelic rock, but MMOSS is the latest of outstanding purveyor of this genre and they call the “Live Free or Die” state home. When Woods invites a band to tour with them, as they did with MMOSS for a month this Spring, its a pretty good clue to us that the band will be a quality outfit. At 285 Kent a couple of weeks back, it was obvious that MMOSS was the real deal. Our first impression, with the two guitarists flanking a female vocalist/flutist, was their resemblance to the excellent Bardo Pond. And this comparison isn’t far off, in terms of the live sound. But MMOSS’s album, the superb i, is a collection of psych-garage nuggets. At 285, the band’s set featured a couple of shorter songs, but MMOSS did stretch it out for a couple of numbers before the too-short set ended with an extended jam. We are streaming “Kitty Sorrow”, a standout track from the album performed to perfection.

I recorded this set in the same manner as those of Woods and Crystal Stilts and the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!
