Kevin Devine: November 22, 2013 Webster Hall – Flac/MP3/Streaming

These days, Kevin Devine is the worst kept secret in pop music. For the first ten years of his career, Kevin was one of those performers who felt like he was yours alone — until you’d come to his shows and finding that you were hardly his only rabid fan. The front rows of Kevin’s shows are always filled with the kind of fans who know every single word to every song and buy tickets whenever he’s in town. Or, as the girl who yelled out a compliment about the Washington DC show on this tour, whenever he’s in any town. At Webster Hall on Friday night, it was the hometown show of a lengthy tour that’s brought Kevin Devine and the Goddamn Band across the country. Ostensibly to promote Bubblegum, the “rock” album of his dual album release (along with Bulldozer) that was fully funded in less than one day on Kickstarter, this tour has been a victory lap of sorts. Bubblegum and Bulldozer aren’t just new albums to support on a tour — they were at first affirmative proof that an artist of tremendous talent with an extremely dedicated underground fanbase could break free from the label trap and forge his own path on his own terms. But more than that, these two albums are superior works of art. Bubblegum on display at Webster is the full-band album that rocks from start to finish. There isn’t a weak track on the album, quite inapposite every track is a scorcher. If some of the larger music sites on the web haven’t yet caught onto these simple facts, its a credit to Paste Magazine, who reviewed Bubblegum with a 8.9 rating. At Webster on Friday, after the classic “Cotton Crush” opener, the band ripped through the first three tracks of the album in order and didn’t really come up for air throughout the entire hour-long main set. The encore set was a bit of a goof, with the band playing portions of a bunch of rock classics, before Kevin ended the show with a couple of solo songs. We’re streaming “Ballgame” which has closed each of the shows on this tour. This is Kevin’s early confessional song but at this point in his career maturity, it seems to be less about him and more about us and our obsessions with the current flavor-of-the-month. For the last few years, Kevin has added a verse for the live version of “Ballgame” which seems to be an evolving set of lyrics. The new last section was the most poignant — “wake up, cause you’re not done. You can fix yourselves up kids, and you can learn how to love, the way you’ve wanted to love someone besides yourself for once, and mean something for more than six months. There’s work to be done”. And that’s how the show ended. Kevin Devine will return in the Spring with a tour to support Bulldozer, and we’ll expect a little bit of a different format, but undoubtedly the same commitment and intensity.

I recorded this show with the Sennheiser cards mounted inside the sub-balcony of the soundboard booth and mixed with a board feed. There was a problematic microphone on one of the drums heads that caused some static in the middle of the show and can be heard at points. With that caveat, enjoy!

Lucius: April 10, 2013 Webster Hall – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

We were captivated by Lucius when they joined us for a Backyard Brunch Session last year, and since that time, their buzz has only grown. After being hailed as a “band to watch” by multiple outlets leading up to and after this year’s SXSW, the band landed a slot opening for Caveman on their headlining tour. This homecoming show at Webster Hall gave Lucius a chance to give it their all in front of the hometown fans. They showed off three new songs, in addition to some of the numbers we fell in love with during the session, like “Go Home”. One could be forgiven for mistaking Jess Wolfe and Holly Laessig for sisters; the pair sing their harmonies so tightly you might think they’d been doing it since childhood. With a full band behind them for this set, their sound was able to fill the big room without losing the delicacy that made it special for us in that backyard in East Williamsburg. Look for the band to have an LP to share soon.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 supercardiod microphones from our usual spot in the venue, plus the soundboard feed used for the Caveman recording. There are a few trouble spots during the first song as the levels were getting dialed in by the engineer; otherwise the sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Caveman: April 10, 2013 Webster Hall – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Caveman has come a long way very quickly since we first saw them 18 months ago as an opening band at Cameo Gallery. At that show, opening for fellow quick-climbers The War On Drugs, it was fairly obvious that Caveman would be going places. A couple of months later they were playing larger gigs, and when their debut CoCo Beware was picked up by Fat Possum Records, the band went national. This month, the band released their anticipated follow-up to CoCo, a self-titled second album that retains the band keen sense of melody and 80s-influenced pop while taking the next step. Caveman is a more mature and more consistently excellent album — just exactly the kind of second album that bodes well for the long term future of Caveman. On Wednesday night at Webster Hall, the band celebrated a homecoming and the CD’s new release with a triumphant show before a packed house. The setlist included most of the band’s recorded material and they were simply ebullient throughout the seventy-five minute set. Matthew Iwanusa spent much of the between-song banter thanking the crowd and acknowledging the band’s fortunes, and the feeling was mutual.

We recorded this set with the Sennheiser cardioids mounted inside the soundboard booth and mixed with an excellent feed provided by the band’s touring FOH. Enjoy!

Mac DeMarco is pulling your leg. He acts the part of the hick from Canada just playing his guitar with his friends, joking about everything, drinking, burping into the microphone, and generally just goofing around. And then the music starts. The songs are typical for an early 20s performer, so yeah there’s also some goof in there, but the serious aspect is that Mac can write and perform top notch indie-pop. Captured Tracks is in on it too, as they’ve released the debut EP and Mac’s new album 2. At Webster Hall on Friday, all of the hijinx were present but the musicianship was there too. Mac worked through much of his still young catalog and threw in a few crazy covers — who goes from Brubeck to Limp Bizkit on a dime — but still managed to perform an extremely entertaining forty-five minute set. Mac DeMarco will continue to tour throughout the year and today it was announced that he’ll be the support on the new Phoenix tour.

I recorded this set in the same manner as the Ty Segall set and the sound is outstanding. Enjoy!

Ty Segall: February 1, 2013 Webster Hall – Flac/MP3/Streaming

Our last visit with Ty Segall was less than six months ago in the intimate DIY venue Death By Audio, when Ty played an unannounced “secret show” to a frenzied crowd of about 100 people. That show was one of our favorite ones of 2012 for a variety of reasons, not the least of which was that we were able to see this exciting and uber-talented performer from only a few feet away. Ty is perhaps the premiere current garage rock purveyor and his star continues to grow. On Friday, Ty Segall sold out Webster Hall. This was not a soft sell out — tickets prices were inflated five times over on various secondary markets for weeks before the show. After two outstanding opening sets by Ex-Cult and Mac DeMarco (coming soon), Ty took the stage in front of a completely manic crowd literally stuffed into every inch of the floor. It didn’t take long for space to clear however, as the moshing was frequent and intense and consisted of a majority of the floor dwellers. Our vantage point was quite different from DBA, as we occupied our usual Webster spot on the right side of the soundboard perch which gave us a full vantage point of the entire crazy floor. But while the crowd was certainly entertaining and a hoot to watch, the real action was on stage where Ty and his band ripped through an hour-long set. The setlist included five songs from his latest album the outstanding Twins and a good mix of old and new material going all the way back to his first official 7″ “Skin”. Ty Segall’s tour continues through the middle of February and moves through the midwest, dates here.

I recorded this show from the soundboard perch with the Sennheiser cards mixed with an excellent board feed and the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Kevin Devine: December 1, 2012 Webster Hall (3 Full Albums!) – Flac/MP3/Streaming

He’s been recording albums for more than ten years, and Kevin Devine decided to have a party to celebrate. And what a party it was, as Kevin came bearing gifts in the form of three of his albums played straight through in three sets at Webster Hall on Saturday last. He performed his first album Circle Gets The Square as a solo acoustic set, and mixed in one new Sandy-inspired song. The final two sets and the encores were played with two different version of the band, as set two consisted of the latest album Between the Concrete and Clouds with a stripped down God Damn Band, and the final set of Split the Country, Split the Street (and encores) with a full version of the band. This was an ambitious undertaking, but in the end it proved that Kevin and the God Damn Band were up to the task. Overall, the night saw the performance of thirty-eight separate songs in close to three full hours of music — a marathon of sorts, but also a full-scale celebration of the career thus far of one of indie-pop’s great songwriters and perhaps one of its most under-appreciated ones at that. The result was one of the best shows we saw all year.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mounted in front of the soundboard in the balcony and mixed with a superb soundboard feed. For the first set, I did not fully reset my levels after a high-volume soundcheck, so that Kevin’s quiet set has low levels on the master that had to be boosted, leading to some ambient noise. For the second set, everything was dialed in perfectly and the sound is superb. Finally, the rowdiness of the now-drunk crowd is maybe a bit too apparent in the third set, which sounds excellent but has quite a bit of shouting, even with the board feed boosted. With those caveats, enjoy!

Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls: September 30, 2012 Webster Hall – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

For a few years now, I’ve had several people telling me that I must go see a Frank Turner concert.  After listening to a few of his studio releases, I put him on my short-list of performers to catch.  With lyrics that spoke to the common man and woman about dealing with everyday problems and extolling life’s simple pleasures, accompanying generally upbeat, ear-catching song structure, I easily saw the appeal of his music.  What I wasn’t prepared for was the complete and utter adulation of the folks at the show.  Shortly after arriving, I met one girl who had seen him a dozen times and several others who claimed to have nearly as many Turner performances or more under their belts.  Hitting the stage for the second, and sold-out, night of a pair at Webster Hall, Frank and his excellent band, The Sleeping Souls (with guitarist Ben Lloyd, bassist Tarrant Anderson, keyboardist Matt Nasir and drummer Nigel Powell), had the majority of the crowd singing every word to the songs right from the start and, basically, at their beck and call.  Clap your hands?  No problem.  Play air harmonica?  We’re on it.  Dance around like lunatics?  Just watch us.  Thankfully, the artists and attendees encouraged the uninitiated and welcomed us with open arms.  Delivering songs from most of his albums, the bulk of 2011’s ‘England Keep My Bones‘ and even a few new tracks, there seemed to be something for everyone.  Suffice to say, I had a blast.  The only downside to the evening is that this was the last show of the band’s tour before they go into the studio to record their next album.  While I greatly anticipate the disc that Frank Turner & The Sleeping Souls will be releasing next year, I have to admit that I am just as excited looking forward to the next time I can see them play again.

With Webster Hall’s top-notch FOH, Creegan, on the controls and joined by the band’s equally superb engineer, Casey, at the helm, the sound was just about perfect for this night.  We were able to get a board feed to accompany our microphones and the resultant recording is excellent.  We hope you like what you hear as much as we did, and even sing, clap and dance to it if you want to.  Enjoy!

Our younger readers are fortunate not to remember the Columbia House Music Club, which promised eight to ten CDs for 1 cent in exchange for signing up for a “club” that would mail you a (usually lame) CD-of-the-month at an exorbitant price, unless you mailed it back first. The club bore more than its fair share of customer complaints, and its selection was weak. But if you were a kid and didn’t have a lot of cash or access to good music stores (and you were diligent about declining that CD of the month), it wasn’t a bad way to get ahold of new music in the pre-Internet era.  One thing I can thank Columbia House for is introducing me to Helmet and their standout albums Meantime and Betty, each still a tour de force of hardcore-influenced rock twenty years on.

Frontman Page Hamilton has moved on from his former bandmates, and is the only original member of the lineup, but as Johnny Fried Chicken Boy observed last October, Hamilton and his new cast of characters can still very much bring the heat. Hurtling through a Webster Hall set that included five songs from the band’s 2010 record Seeing Eye Dog (plus another from 2004’s Size Matters) with a fairly even blend of songs from their four 90s albums, Strap It On, Meantime, Betty and Aftertaste. One feature that always set Helmet apart from many hardcore and metal bands of the era was their more intelligent approach to their music, both in terms of Hamilton’s classically-informed playing and their eschewing of the macho heavy metal aesthetic of contemporaries like Pantera. Hamilton, who relocated from New York to LA at the end of the 90s, remains a gifted frontman, and songs like two of my favorites, “In the Meantime” and “Wilma’s Rainbow” were delivered with ferocity. Although this set clocked in at barely over an hour thanks to Webster’s curfew and the fact that this was a co-headlining tour with Toadies, Hamilton and the band packed in sixteen songs, and stirred up a mosh pit in the process (kind of a feat when you consider how early it was in the night, and the age of many of the fans).

Johnny Fried Chicken Boy recorded this set with four microphones in our usual balcony location. I ended up using the Schoeps MK41 source alone for this post, as both sources were a bit “muddy” in the low-mid bass region, and combining them would only have accentuated that flaw.  After some time spent editing, although this is not my favorite of my recordings quality-wise, this recording should be a very good listen, if not quite up to the standard of Johnny’s Bowery Ballroom recording linked above.  Enjoy!

There are two main paths that bands take to success these days: There are the bands with instant buzz, who find themselves on the late night TV circuit and playing large venues instantly. (They tend to flame out quickly, too). Then there are the bands who earn it the hard way – playing 200-plus shows a year, gigging every goddamn festival and radio station and bar in every corner of the country, putting thousands of miles on a broke down van and doubly more miles on their livers and sanity, all for the love of music, sure, but also for a shot at success.

Success, for a rock band these days, is a bit redefined, but Lucero have achieved it, and they’ve achieved it the hard way. An unabashedly masculine band, whose hardscrabble tales ring with authenticity, Lucero sometimes seems to be of another era. It’s hard to argue otherwise about a band that titles their current release (their eighth record, but first on ATO Records) Women and Work. After all, for the early 21st century American man, work is something he hasn’t got, and women – well, they’re too busy doing all the work.

But that’s the beauty of Lucero – they remind you of better days, but they also remind you of the simple pleasures of the days you’re in. The boys themselves always look like they’re having fun. Frontman Ben Nichols’ most frequently-uttered phrase between songs is “hell yeah!”, and the band made quick work of a handle of Jameson onstage. Lucero’s music, even when tackling sadder subjects, has good cheer to go with its honest grit. Today we are presenting two recordings  from Webster Hall – the first from October of 2009, the second from April 20 (yes, that date) of this year. These two shows are perhaps more telling in their similarities than in their differences; the band may have continued to expand their sound and personnel, but the core of their music is consistent and strong. Maybe there’s a bit more gravel in Nichols’ pipes, but that doesn’t hurt a thing. And despite spending virtually the entire past decade on the road, they sound as fresh and hungry as ever. For example, with its early curfew, Webster Hall practically demands short sets – but Lucero played a two-hour set of nearly 30 songs. Nobody told these guys about lowering expectations.

The songs – well, there are those to talk about too. That word “honest” comes up again, when you think about a Memphis band whose sound pays homage to the country and blues and even R&B that fuel the town, but with a bit of a punk flavor thrown in. At the 4/20 show, the new songs were a blast; it’s hard to argue with the rocker “I Can’t Stand To Leave You” or the honky-tonk “Like Lightning”. A stripped-down group of personnel played “The War”, the World War II tale that could easily resonate with soldiers in Afghanistan and elsewhere today. And of course, Lucero played the favorites that the band is probably expected to play at every show, and why not? “Nights Like These” is one of those songs you never get tired of; same for the valedictory “Last Night In Town”.

Of the October 2009 show, JFCB said:

Lucero made quite the impression on me when I first saw them in early 2009. After the release of the excellent ‘1372 Overton Park’ album later that year, they embarked on a tour with fellow Memphis musician Amy LaVere and blues/rock duo Cedric Burnside & Lightnin’ Malcolm. Billed as the “Ramblin’ Roadshow and Memphis Revue”, it was also the first time the group ever toured with a horn section to mirror the sounds on their recent disc. Being on the road with this handpicked crew must’ve had a positive influence as both the band and the particularly boisterous crowd on this Saturday night seemed to have a great time. While drinking and fielding song requests, Lucero played the majority of ‘Overton Park’ and dug out a number of older nuggets that had the party whooping and hollering for more.

We can keep spilling words about them, but really, all you need to know about Lucero is contained in their sendoff to us at the 4/20 show: “We appreciate each and every one of y’all making dreams come true. Dreams do come true!” A lot of things about rock music have changed in the fourteen years of Lucero’s career; a lot of dreams have changed, many for the worst. We’re pleased to raise a glass to these guys realizing theirs – they deserve it.

I recorded the 4/20 show with Schoeps MK5 cardiod microphones in a wider NOS configuration from directly behind the soundboard in order to give the recording a spacious, open sound. Johnny Fried Chicken boy recorded the October 2009 show with AKG 414 large-diaphragm mics that are always great-sounding, but especially for this band. New Multitudes: March 14, 2012 Webster Hall – FLAC / MP3 Downloads + Streaming Songs

It’s my understanding that the seeds for the New Multitudes project were first sown as far back as 1995 when alternative-country godfather Jay Farrar (Son Volt, Uncle Tupelo) was tapped to collaborate with Billy Bragg on what would eventually become the ‘Mermaid Avenue‘ album.  After Jay declined, Bragg wound up recruiting Wilco and released two discs of previously unheard lyrics by folk singer Woody Guthrie put to music written by the performers.  Fast forward several more years and Farrar approached the idea again, bringing together a veritable Americana/alt-country supergroup to write music for lyrics that Guthrie wrote during his years in Los Angeles.  Adding Will Johnson (Centro-matic), Anders Parker (Varnaline) and Yim Yames (a.k.a. Jim James of My Morning Jacket), each artist imparts distinct aspects of their styles to the songs but, as a collective whole, they also blend incredibly well together.

With such a roster of talented musicians, I was very excited to see this concert at its stop in New York.  Out of the gate, the group did a straight run-through of the songs off the album, with barely any time for applause between them.  However, rather than being a carbon copy of the disc, the live renditions imbued much more detail and fully realized the interplay and spot-on harmonizing between the members.  It quickly became evident that a few weeks on the road had honed the material beautifully.  It also showcased their versatility, particularly as Will and Anders did a round robin between drums, guitars and vocals.  The next part of the show had each member taking an impressive solo acoustic turn.  Finally, it was everybody back on stage contributing to each other’s songs and finishing off the night with one of Woody Guthrie’s own compositions, each performer trading off on vocals.  After such an amazing evening, it’s a shame that this tour had only a handful of dates.  After New Multitudes’ next and last planned outing at the Newport Folk Festival in July, I certainly hope they can find the time for another pass through.

Being set up right behind the soundboard and dead center, the always wonderful sounding Webster Hall once again didn’t disappoint us.  Aside from the drums being a bit upfront during the first song, the house mix was excellent and our recording is a very good reflection of that.  We hope you like what you hear as much as we did.  Enjoy!
