Wilco: January 18, 2020 – Riviera Maya, Mexico

The first Wilco International Festival “Sky Blue Sky” was a celebratory communal event held at a beach resort in Mexico in January. And like their Solid Sound Fest, the event in Mexico combined community action, charity, fun, sun, and music. Teaming with Positive Legacy, Wilco and fans offered a litany of community-helping tasks to give back to the local community so that the Fest would leave a positive footprint in its wake.

Musically, Wilco committed to performing no song twice in their three shows. This naturally led to some rare nuggets making their way back into the setlist for this special event. On this first night, that included three tracks from the debut album (with personal favorite “Passenger Side”) and rarely performed “Nothingsevergonnastandinmyway(again)” from Summerteeth.

Its hard to say when Wilco (or any other band) will be able to perform again, as their Spring Tour was canceled, but as of now there are tour dates beginning in June still scheduled. Hopefully, those shows can happen.

Pete recorded this set with his trusty Neumann cards from an advantageous position and other than the windy conditions, the sound quality is quite excellent. Enjoy!

Wilco: October 13, 2019 Brooklyn Steel

I first saw Wilco 23 years ago, and first taped them live 22 years ago. Wilco was one of the first bands to be featured on NYCTaper in 2007 and have been consistently featured on this site over the years. By my count, we’ve featured Wilco 26 times on this site, from many local venues but also as far away at Virginia, Massachusetts, Cooperstown, and Connecticut. The simple reason for this consistent and voluminous documentation is that Wilco is perhaps the greatest American band of the last 25 years and their live performances are unfailingly superb. We’ve never had a bad time at a Wilco show, and very clearly have had some of our best live experiences thanks to them.

The release of any new Wilco album is a cause for excitement, but by all accounts (including ours) the latest release Ode To Joy is their strongest and most accomplished album in more than a decade. In times when the world is reeling out of control on a nearly daily basis, Wilco’s newest album is a thoughtful and measured approach to contemporary life. Given that Jeff Tweedy recently completed his autobiography and released two solo albums, this kind of contemplative Wilco release seems to have been the next step in this artist’s evolution.

After a newly two-year hiatus from touring, the entire Wilco band seems very much to have absorbed the energy at the center of the recent artistic output of its leader. The Wilco we saw on Sunday night, and by all accounts on every night of this tour, is a relaxed and confident band comfortable with themselves and each other. The result is that these shows have been not only celebrations of the return of the band to touring, but also kinetic performances of the new material mixed in with virtuoso versions of the classics. Of note at Brooklyn Steel was the absolutely stunning guitar solo by Nels Cline in “Impossible Germany”. Just check out the audience response at the close of the song and the extended ovation. What a moment. We were also quite pleased to see another spacey “Laminated Cat” and first album stand-out “Box Full of Letters”. But on this night, the showcase was on Ode To Joy and the setlist wisely spaced the songs throughout the set where we heard nine of the album’s eleven songs nearly in order of the album.

The Wilco tour continues with dates throughout the country for most of the rest of the year (dates here), culminating in the Wilco Sky Blue Sky Festival in Mexico in January.

I recorded this set with the Neumann hyper cards raised high directly centered behind the soundboard. The Stan Doty mix in this already-excellent sounding room was simply perfect and as a result we’re offering what I currently believe to be the best sounding Wilco recording I’ve ever captured. Enjoy!

Wilco: June 29, 2019 Solid Sound Festival

Pete reports:

“Saturday night’s show kicked off with “Hell is Chrome”. For me, Jeff could have said “Thanks and good night” and walked off stage after that, and I would have been satisfied. But the festivities continued with another AGIB entry (Muzzle of Bees) followed by a couple from YHF (IATTBYH and War on War), and back to AGIB’s “Company in My Back”. A few songs later, they debuted two brand new songs, “Empty Corner” (which had been featured earlier in the day in a surround sound installation at the museum) and “White Wooden Cross.” Overall, the Saturday night installment was classic, good-as-it-gets, Wilco fare. 24 songs, solid entries from the entire body of work, and a nice two-song encore to cap off the night. Absolutely electrifying, and exactly what one would expect from this band at their own festival in the Saturday night, beachfront real estate portion of the weekend.”

Pete recorded this show with the trusty Neumann cards from a very advantageous position at the Soundboard cage. The sound is superb, enjoy!

Jeff Tweedy: January 30, 2018 Vicar Street Dublin Ireland

Jeff Tweedy is in the midst of a short solo tour that finds him roving through Canada and which ends with a show at Princeton University.. Jeff will return to the NYC area in June for two dates as part of the Clearwater Festival up in Croton. But earlier this year, Tweedy traveled through Europe including a special night at Vicar Street in Dublin as the opening night of the tour. Friend of the site Joe was there to capture the Dublin show, a night filled with many classic favorites and much banter and fan interaction, but which is most noteworthy as the live premiere of the new Jeff Tweedy composition “Don’t Forget We All Think About Dying”. The song has been played a handful of time since Dublin, including once on the current tour, but Joe’s recording is the song’s world premiere.

Joe recorded this set with portable microphones from the front and center of the balcony. The quiet acoustic music and the generous crowd participation created some serious editing issues, but overall this is a quality listen. Enjoy!

Wilco: March 24, 2017 Big Ears Festival (Knoxville, TN)

October 27, 2017
By

© Copyright David Simchock. Provided with permission by Big Ears Festival.

Wilco is the kind of popular band that is perfectly suited to a festival like Big Ears. For the past several years, the Knoxville, TN-based festival has put on the kind of genre-agnostic, fan-focused, music-focused event that is an increasing rarity in a festival environment where the top-line band is invariably a mainstream hip-hop act or LCD Soundsystem. Wilco have been called “dad-rock” and a variety of other things like it, but there’s nothing embarrassing about liking a band that has continued to focus on songwriting and continued trying to do something new. If you don’t believe that, you obviously didn’t see, or hear about, Jeff Tweedy’s experimental set during this festival with Chikamorachi (we hope to share that soon).

On this night, Wilco took the stage at the Tennessee Theatre and played a set true to the festival’s style, cranking out several extended noise-jam numbers including “Spiders (Kidsmoke)” and caterwauling “Impossible Germany.” If this didn’t offer quite the novelty of the Yankee Hotel Foxtrot set at Solid Sound later in the year, this set was nonetheless a special one, including starting with the fairly-rarely-played “Radio Cure.” The set doesn’t so much flow as exist as a series of climaxes and valleys, though the noise outro from “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart” into a furious “Art of Almost” is a particular pleasure. Schmilco and its several obligatory appearances gave several points in the set a more sedate feel, as none of these songs seem to have yet established themselves as live breakouts, though “Locator” feels like the most obvious candidate to get there (and is easily the best of the Schmilco songs played at this show). Wilco ended the night with a lesser-played number of 2017, “A Shot In the Arm,” whose coda could as easily have been a message to the music festival world at large: “What you once were isn’t what you want to be any more.” Indeed, if you’re in the business of attending or putting on music festivals, I’d recommend a look at Big Ears.

This set was recorded by Matt Honkonen of the Big Ears staff with a Zoom H6 and was provided to us by Big Ears. The sound quality is a bit compressed at points, but the fairly ideal location of the recorder in the theater yields an overall pleasing result. Enjoy!

Speaking of Big Ears, we’re going to be posting a bunch of sets from the 2017 festival in the upcoming weeks in anticipation of the 2018 festival. The initial lineup announcement comes November 1 and tickets are onsale November 3.

Wilco: June 23, 2017 Solid Sound Festival (complete Being There and Yankee Hotel Foxtrot)

June 27, 2017
By

[photos by Robert Loerzel from Underground Bee]

Being There was released in October of 1996 and I saw Wilco live for the first time a month later at Mercury Lounge for a show that would change the course of my musical life. Like many of the attendees of this year’s Solid Sound Festival, I’ve seen Wilco probably more than fifty times in a variety of locations. I’ve seen multiple shows supporting all of the albums of their career, I’ve seen acoustic sets, many guest appearances, the all-covers set. I’ve seen them play in small halls, big halls, theatres, baseball stadiums, a brewery, festivals, and even at Madison Square Garden. But the seminal event of seeing and hearing the band close-up play brand new Being There songs was an experience that took me down this path and permanently affixed those songs to my psyche.

Twenty-something years later, Wilco delivered on the now-traditional (2013-all covers, 2015-all acoustic) Solid Sound Friday request set by playing the album straight-through. It says something about the staying power of the material that almost all of these songs are either still set staples or occasional plays for the band’s “regular” shows. But hearing the material in sequence brings me back to the cramped confines of Mercury on that chilly November night and reminds me why I still go to such lengths to see Wilco. But oh, if the Being There performance was all you expected from Friday night’s set, the “encore” segment was a huge Wilco curveball. Upon returning to the stage, the band jumped into “I Am Trying to Break Your Heart”, a not uncommon encore song. And then kept playing — the entire Yankee Hotel Foxtrot also in its entirety. Its took the opening notes of rarely played “Radio Cure” for our correspondent Gr8fulPete to recognize what was happening, but when it dawned on the crowd you can hear the shock and utter surprise of those witnessing this encore set for the ages.

Pete also recorded Saturday night’s set and the Sunday Tweedy & Friends set and those will be coming to the site in the coming days.

Pete recorded this show with his high end Neumann cards from directly at the soundboard cage area and the sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Wilco: June 3, 2016 Mountain Jam – Hunter NY

June 5, 2016

Wilco Mt Jam Jill 1
[photos by Jill from For The Love of Brooklyn]

This weekend I came across a photo of Jeff Tweedy with Bob Dylan at Bonnaroo in 2004. In the photo, Dylan is wearing a cowboy hat and looking very much like the bemused elder statesman and Tweedy is wearing a baseball cap, an exposed laminate pass and a look of a satisfied fan. To be fair, at that point in his career Jeff Tweedy had already founded one of the most influential alt-country bands (Uncle Tupelo) and carried Wilco through a series of superbly received albums and tours for nearly ten years.

Fast forward to this weekend at Mountain Jam and twelve years later its now Tweedy wearing the cowboy hat and taking the role of elder statesman. The large video screens give the crowd an ability to see closeups even if we’re fifty feet from the stage, and throughout the set it was a hoot to see the bemused look on Tweedy’s face as the Jam crowd roared for every familiar song. But like Dylan before them, Wilco’s set wasn’t just a band churning out the hits — this is an active group with new material and although Star Wars wasn’t played straight through as with the Portchester shows a few months back, the newer songs were well represented in the show, and fit well sprinkled among the familiar songs. The highlight of the set was another veteran/protege appearance, as current alt-country star Jason Isbell joined Wilco for a tremendously well played “California Stars” with dueling guitar solos between Nels Cline and Isbell. And at that high point of the set, Tweedy didn’t look bemused but truly pleased with the superb collaboration.

I recorded this set with the large diaphragm Neumann cards set up in the taper’s “section” on the hill. The sound quality absords some of the crowd chatter and some of the outdoor elements, but overall its an excellent capture. Enjoy!

Wilco: February 2, 2016 Capitol Theatre (Port Chester, NY)

February 8, 2016
By

IMG_1419

Wilco’s return to the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester was a welcome one, with us last having caught the band’s three night stint there in 2014. In 2016, they decided to split things up, with these two shows in Port Chester followed by two shows at King’s Theater in Brooklyn (which we missed, unfortunately). This night at the Cap felt like a bit of warm-up, with Tweedy noting some of the equipment problems that occurred during “Art of Almost.” Compared to the second night of the run, Tweedy had much more to say here, at one point noting that his pants had ripped near the crotch, and the he was trying to avoid a Lenny Kravitz situation that would be “much less impressive” than the one that set the Internet on fire back in 2015. It was a welcome moment of levity in a show that followed this year’s Star Wars template, with the band performing a full run-through of that album before delving into the back catalog, then wrapping up with an acoustic set. Among this night’s highlights were the first encore, a superlative, noisy version of “Spiders (Kidsmoke),” as well as the A.M. favorite, “Box Full of Letters.” The acoustic set also came with a special treat, as opener William Tyler joined for “Airline To Heaven.”

The band’s tour continues down the eastern side of the country for another few days of February before they take a pause until June, when they’ll return for Mountain Jam. We’ll see you there.

Wilco: February 3, 2016 Capitol Theatre (Port Chester, NY)

February 4, 2016

[photo by Anthony Bauer – courtesy of We All Want Someone blog]

This is Wilco’s first visit to New York since the death of David Bowie, whose songs they (supposedly) sound-checked (but did not play) before this run of two shows at the Capitol Theatre in Port Chester before they head to King’s Theater in Brooklyn. There’s a message somewhere in there about the fragile nature of longevity; look around at Wilco’s crowd, and they’re getting older; look at the band, and it’s the same story, and it will be in each year that this band continues its journey. But while that might be depressing to some, there’s great cause for hope, too: This is a veteran band touring an excellent and well-received new album, Star Wars that, in the meantime, is able to take us on a nightly journey through a catalog that includes everything from the gentle folk-rock of “Passenger Side” to the skronky rock of “The Late Greats” to the electronic-inflected sounds of “Art of Almost” to the noisy, conflicted “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart.” The band doesn’t reinvent itself so much as grow and expand and follow its passions, and their ability to do that without flopping (let’s face it, in most hands, the electronic experiment of “Art of Almost” would be a disaster — just ask anyone who listened to U2 1997) is a sign of their confidence of Jeff Tweedy’s considerable songwriting chops. Bowie set an even more ambitious template for this kind of thing, unafraid to assume different characters and sounds and styles from album to album (including his own electronic experiment, in that fated year of 1997). Whether all of Bowie’s moves were successful or not, he never let things get stale, right up until Lazarus, this year. Wilco may not be David Bowie, but they can claim to be one of few bands who’ve had a career this long who have kept it fresh this long.

This show followed the familiar format of the Star Wars tour, taking us through the entirety of that album before segueing into a greatest-hits grab bag that included several of the same numbers as the previous night, though rendered more forcefully, plus some new appearances such as “I Am Trying To Break Your Heart,” “Jesus Etc.,” “Hummingbird,” and “I’m A Wheel.” If last night’s show had its share of equipment troubles that seemed to feed Tweedy’s sharp sense of humor (including unmissable “Kravitz” joke), tonight’s show was tighter and stronger, both in terms of the playing and setlist, and Tweedy (who had little to say) said as much. As with the previous night, the band wrapped up with an acoustic encore, this time highlighted by “War on War” and the incomparable “California Stars.” If this show wasn’t a groundbreaking departure, well, it didn’t have to be. This is a band still firing on all cylinders, making records people care about, and that’s a hard achievement to ignore.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41V supercardiod microphones into the Aeta PSP-3 preamp for maximum clarity. NYCTaper recorded this set with Schoeps MK4 cardiods for a somewhat more open sound (his recording coming soon). Both recordings are outstanding. Enjoy!

Night One was recorded and will be available soon.

Wilco has wowed this summer in a few ways — first with their exceptional Solid Sound acoustic performance (which we captured here), then with the surprise free release of Star Wars, easily their finest album in ten years. Here at Gathering of the Vibes on the Bridgeport seaside, the band built on the momentum they created with their full-album performance of Star Wars back at Pitchfork Music Festival with another full-album run through, followed by some of the band’s best-known songs as well as the rarity “Laminated Cat.” As a special treat, Warren Haynes, he of every single guest appearance at northeastern jam festivals, joined for “California Stars” along with Joe Russo to close things out. But lest you think this was a standard-issue performance, Jeff Tweedy and co., buoyed by the presence of Nels Cline, turned even the older tunes into noisier, edgier renditions than we’ve seen recently, perhaps alienating some of this festival’s core audience, but proving that Wilco is returning to what made Yankee Hotel Foxtrot their true landmark album, and what marks them as so much bigger than being the “dad rock” of their detractors. Star Wars has proven that this band has many more good years ahead, and we’ll be thrilled to be a part of them.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones in the taper’s section. While distance and being outdoors always impact sound quality, overall this is an excellent effort. Enjoy!
