Wormburner have been kicking around the New York scene here for a few years, making their first appearance on this site back in 2010, where they were rightly compared to a cross between the Hold Steady and Camper Van Beethoven, owing in no small part to frontman Hank Henry’s talking-style vocals. For my part, this record release show at Mercury Lounge for the band’s excellent third LP, Pleasant Living in Planned Communities, was my first with the band. In addition to those references, I caught a pretty strong whiff of some of the better post-grunge bands, especially the mostly-forgotten Harvey Danger. No surprise, then, than by the first chorus of the leadoff track “Drinks At the Plaza Hotel”, I was nodding my head.

This is a very easy band to like, a group of obviously nice people who deploy big hooks and choruses, but don’t skimp on the lyrical concepts just because they know they probably could. To wit, you end up with songs about such things as, per the band’s website, “a downed airman in WWII Europe, a 21st Century soldier returning home from battle, and a transient gay hustler whose youthful looks are weathering with age”. The band’s delivery reflects the professionalism of eight years together as a going concern, and even as they played brand-new material for presumably the first time, Wormburner remained dialed in. The new album material comes across as some of the band’s strongest yet, in particular “Plaza Hotel”, “Catherine”, that WWII song “Hopscotch Gunner”, and “Somewhere Else to Be”. Sean Eden of Luna guested on Pleasant Living and was also on hand for the night’s proceedings, joining the band for two songs including Donovan’s “Seasons of the Witch”.  The Cult’s “She Sells Sanctuary” was the perfect big-rock way to end the show, setting the tone for the Wormburner shows to come in the next months.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK41 microphones and head Mercury engineer Dave Lefcourt’s soundboard mix. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Catch Wormburner in New York again at the Tijuana Gift Shop showcase during CMJ on Wednesday, October 22 at Bowery Electric, and again at Mercury Lounge on December 18 for their annual Christmas show.

Wormburner: September 14, 2012 Mercury Lounge – Flac/MP3/Streaming

For geographical reasons, Wormburner only plays a handful of shows a year. And now having seen them six times, I’ve come to the conclusion that these semi-rare appearances are not to be missed. The musicianship is always solid, but its the live energy particularly from lead singer Steve “Hank” Henry that elevates the performance to “must see” level. Back in mid-September we saw another rousing Wormburner show at Mercury Lounge, which included solid numbers from their most recent album 2010’s Placed By The Gideons, several new numbers from an upcoming album, and some rare treats. Last week, Wormburner announced their annual Holiday show at Mercury Lounge with special guests. We recorded the holiday show in 2010 and if recent experience is any measure, it should be a heck of a party.

I recorded this set with the Sennheiser cards mixed with an excellent board feed from Mercury’s superb sound engineer Kevin. I relied mostly on the audience mics in order to accentuate the experience of the show. The result is some extra chatter which is very much compensated by the overall energy of the recording. Enjoy!

Tommy Brull Foundation Concert Announcement: War On Drugs and Dean and Britta July 21 in Wantagh

April 30, 2012
By

We are so pleased to be able to announce today that the Tommy Brull Foundation will present the 2nd Annual Shine A Light Festival on July 21, 2012 at Mulcahy’s in Wantagh on Long Island. This year’s roster of bands includes co-headliners (and nyctaper favorites) The War On Drugs along with Dean and Britta. Wormburner will also appear again this year in an encore performance from last year’s Festival.

The Tommy Brull Foundation is a remarkable organization set up to celebrate the life of Tommy, who died far too young. The Foundation’s mission includes assisting persons with disabilities in the greater Nassau County area. The proceeds from last year’s Shine A Light Festival were donated to Camp Anchor, a summer camp for disabled youth in Lido Beach. The Camp is special to the Foundation in large part because Tommy actually worked there. We were involved in last year’s Festival, which included performances by Deer Tick and Wormburner, both featured on nyctaper.

Tickets for the July 21 event went on sale this morning through Ticketfly [HERE].

The Facebook invite page for this amazing show is [HERE].

Mulcahy’s is in Wantagh on Long Island. It is reachable by the Long Island Railroad, and the venue is right across the street from the Wantagh station. See you there!
