Long Hots: September 8, 2017 Three Lobed Records/WXDU Hopscotch Afternoon Jamboree (Raleigh, NC)

September 15, 2017
By

I can’t even give you a link to Long Hots on the Internet, because there ain’t one. But maybe you’ve heard of such bands as Rosali, Hothead, and Spacin‘. Ah, right, now you get the idea. So named for a kind of hot pepper, I assure that this band is prepared to bring the fire. My now-annual journey to the Three Lobed Recordings / WXDU Hopscotch Afternoon Jamboree is never complete without a total surprise, and seeing “Philadelphia’s most anticipated band” playing their third-ever show was certainly one of them. These women didn’t spend a long time onstage, but they used their fifteen minutes well, handing us two doses of feral guitar shredding and general disrespect for the integrity of our eardrums. This band played their fourth show, the following night, with Purling Hiss, so if you didn’t figure out the RIYL on this one, I can’t help you. Head over to bandcamp, throw these powerful women some love, and make sure some more Long Hots is in your future.

I recorded this set with a combination of onstage Schoeps MK4V microphones and several soundboard channels from house engineer Evan Lamb. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Bill Nace‘s reputation among noise aficionados is a well-deserved one, with him having collaborated with the likes of Okkyung Lee, Chris Corsano, Thurston Moore, Kim Gordon, and Paul Flaherty. If his work with Gordon in Body/Head is his best known, that still means Nace’s experimental guitar work still resonates with a relatively specific (but dedicated) portion of the music-loving population. Among a diverse bill, perhaps Nace’s appearance most drove home what sets Three Lobed Recordings apart even from its brethren among small labels.  On a day that spanned Watery Love’s scuzzy hardcore to Meg Baird and Mary Lattimore’s delicate folk, Nace’s set nonetheless stood out as a testament to music’s outer boundaries. The abstract, hypnotic and deeply felt composition that Nace wove on this afternoon was one of those things that leaves each listener open to interpret it how they wish; for me, a reward of this type of music is the way that it forces the listener to decide what it is, rather than interpret more direct expressions like lyrics. While sometimes a recording cannot fully capture what it meant to experience something live at the time, I submit that this is almost the reverse — on headphones, in a car or some other enclosed, personal space, this set is even better to engage with.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones onstage and Brad Womack’s house mix. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

MANAS: September 9, 2016 Three Lobed / WXDU Day Show, King’s (Raleigh, NC)

We were floored by Tashi Dorji‘s performance at Hopscotch Music Festival last year, so it seemed almost inevitable that the relentless guitar improviser would somehow become part of our favorite of the weekend’s events, the the annual Three Lobed / WXDU Day Show at King’s, the following year. This very special show featured the band MANAS, which is normally a collaboration between Dorji and Thom Nguyen on drums. For this show, the band was joined by Tyler Damon on an additional drum kit. Like Dorji’s solo work, many MANAS performances are fully improvised, and this was no exception. This twenty-five minute performance rose and fell, with the tinkling percussion that began it giving way to Dorji’s initial guitar meditations before exploding into a furious, expanding universe of sound. Dorji’s performances have a way of hitting you differently the more times you listen to them; he has a way of producing a tangle of emotions with his instrument. This performance began the day, and set a high bar for what was to come. It was work to be admired, and in true Three Lobed tradition, that made you think.

I recorded this set with Brad Womack’s soundboard feed together with Schoeps MK4V microphones onstage. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Bachman-Toth Band: September 9, 2016 Three Lobed/WXDU Day Show, King’s, Raleigh, NC

If the Watery Love set was the volume plateau of the Three Lobed / WXDU Day Show at King’s during Hopscotch Music Festival, the joint appearance by longtime site faves James Toth aka Wooden Wand and Daniel Bachman was undoubtedly its whimsical peak. This day happened to not only be one of the consistent musical highlights of the year, but also it was Toth’s birthday, so he and Bachman were probably in a celebratory mood. Whatever the reason, reality was that this combination of players had never existed before — Bachman, Toth, Forrest Marquisee on guitar, and Ian McColm on drums — and they hadn’t even soundchecked. What would happen was a mystery to everyone, even to some degree the people on the stage.

However much the 20+-minute drone-ified version of Black Sabbath’s “War Pigs” that emerged was or wasn’t planned, the outcome felt like more than a mere lark. As with everything these players do, this was done with spirit, turning this into one of those off-the-cuff, daring improvisational moments that have come to define what is always the highlight of this music festival. There’s not much more to say about it than that — listen to it and you’ll understand.

I recorded this set with Brad Womack’s soundboard feed and Schoeps MK4V microphones onstage. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Watery Love: September 9, 2016 Three Lobed / WXDU Day Show, Hopscotch Music Festival, King’s (Raleigh, NC)

“We’ve arrived at the volume plateau of the day” Three Lobed‘s Cory Rayborn said as he introduced the Philly “supergroup” Watery Love, taking the stage at the annual Three Lobed / WXDU Day Show at King’s during Hopscotch Music Festival. Rayborn wasn’t lying–the band came out of the gate with the loud-as-fuck blast of “Ned’s Dreamcatcher” and didn’t let up from there. As we were streaming the show live on Duke University radio station WXDU, the team handling that end of the business had to work overtime to “bleep” vocalist Richie Charles’ (of Richie Records) dirty words back to PG-13. Indeed, this was dirty, cuss-spitting, fire-breathing, bad-ass scuzz rock and it was not to be stopped, by outdoor sunshine or otherwise. But while any group of yahoos can stand up and make noise, what sets Watery Love, and this particular performance, apart is that these guys hang together so well, playing well and turning all of that energy into something deceptively cohesive.

This was a perfect wake-up call on a day with a very wide palette of artists, and regulars Charles and Max Milgram (guitar) had arrived equipped with extra firepower in the form of Purling Hiss‘ Mike Polizze and Ben Leaphart, together with harplist/multi-instrumentalist Mary Lattimore (possibly the day’s MVP, or at least, the person who played with the most different bands) on bass, drums and keys, respectively. Watery Love has been a band since 2008, but their performances, especially outside of Philly, have been sporadic, and their recorded output is equally limited. Seeing them is a treat, and the energy they expect is equal to the moments they inhabit. There were many very, very fine performances on this day, but this might be the only one that had even the people in the back howling with glee like teenagers. Whatever it is these guys have, make sure you try to catch some of it.

I recorded this set with King’s engineer Brad Womack’s house mix, plus an additional soundboard channel, and Schoeps MK4V microphones onstage. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Eugene Chadbourne-Steve Gunn-Mary Lattimore: September 11, 2015 WXDU/WXYC/WKNC Day Show, King’s (Raleigh, NC)

October 12, 2015

For their final act of their day show at King’s, Triangle college radio stations WXDU, WKNC and WXYC outdid themselves with a three-way-combo of stringed instrument experts. Legendary improvisational guitarist and banjo player Eugene Chadbourne, whose long list of collaborators runs the gamut from Camper Van Beethoven to John Zorn, was joined by New Yorker and longtime site favorite Steve Gunn and the renowned experimental harpist Mary Lattimore. Having never played together before, the three worked out their collaborative style in real time, which was a fascinating process to watch, and even more of one to hear. It was fascinating to watch Lattimore turn an instrument known for its delicacy into an aggressive, atonal element, with her slapping at its sides for percussive effect. Gunn and Chadbourne likewise built off of each other, with Chadbourne providing emphatic bursts of noise at points on the banjo. The piece flowed from delicate and restrained to harsh and intense minute-to-minute, holding your attention as you wondered where the trio would end up next, and reveling in the fact that they might not be quite sure, either. Chadbourne even added some vocals at the end, with lines referencing the traditional song “I Wish I Was A Mole In the Ground.” It’s safe to say that nothing else about this unique meeting was “traditional.”

I recorded this set in the same manner as the day’s other recordings, with a soundboard feed from King’s engineer Justin together with Schoeps MK4V microphones onstage. There is a bit of DI hiss on the quiet passages, but overall the sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Away Msg: September 11, 2015 WXDU/WXYC/WKNC Day Show, Neptune’s (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

October 9, 2015
By

awaymsg2

In lieu of its usual tag-team day show with Three Lobed Recordings at King’s during Hopscotch Festival, this year Durham’s WXDU teamed with fellow college radio stations WXYC and WKNC to create a two-level show that offered the broadest possible spectrum of sounds. Opening things up at Neptune’s, Kings’ downstairs venue and an electronic music hotbed throughout the festival, was the young artist Away Msg, aka Kat Liang, who produces thoughtful ambient dance music that incorporates natural sounds into the usual slow-rolling flow of textures and beats. The Raleigh artist’s repertoire consists solely of some Soundcloud tracks thus far, but she deserves a wider audience that we’re sure she’ll get. During her time making music, Away Msg has evolved away from 8-bit style sounds toward a more cerebral glitch/ambient style exemplified by songs like “after work (the good times are too short),” which began this set. Away Msg’s songs are complex without being precious (even with the long song titles), and listening to them in the comforting twilight of Neptune’s at one in the afternoon set a perfect musical tone for the rest of the day, at a creative day show that has historically always been more of a true music fan’s event that the “parties” that go on elsewhere. We don’t get nearly as many opportunities to feature electronic music on this site as we’d like, so this is a special treat. Keep an eye on this artist – we hope to hear more from her in the future!

Eric PH recorded this set with a soundboard feed and AKG CK91 microphones to provide ambiance. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Elisa Ambrogio-Ben Chasny-Tashi Dorji: September 11, 2015 WXDU/WXYC/WKNC Day Show (Raleigh, NC) – FLAC/MP3/Streaming

September 24, 2015

IMG_3200

With Three Lobed Recordings on a temporary hiatus from their traditional day show with WXDU on the Friday of Hopscotch Festival, WXDU took matters into their own hands and teamed with fellow college radio stations WXYC (UNC-Chapel Hill) and WKNC (N.C. State) to produce a two-stage day show worth of the tradition. Perhaps the centerpiece of these sets was the trio of Elisa Ambrogio (best known for her work in Magik Markers) and Ben Chasny (aka Six Organs of Admittance), who have been touring together, with the guitar improviser Tashi Dorji. The three of them got down to some serious experimental improv that captured the imagination of the crowd (and had a couple of bewildered college students plugging their ears). The sum of this team was clearly more than its parts, combining noise, free verse, and melodic interludes. By the end of this 20 minute burst of inspiration, our only regret was that it couldn’t be longer.

I recorded this set with the Schoeps MK4V microphones you see in the photo below, together with a soundboard feed by the day’s very capable engineer, Justin. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Yeah, I’ve heard the dings on Record Store Day. That it detracts from the record-buying impulse of the other 363 days of the year (since there are two RSDs). That it’s just record companies creating fake scarcity to move often second-tier product. That it’s overly dominated by corporate artists and Jack White hawking his latest gimmick releases, and that those big artists gum up the pressing plants for everyone else. That the no-returns system and opaque distribution system hurt the record stores more than they can help.

To which all I can say is, come out on RSD to a store like Chaz’s Bull City Records in Durham, NC, and leave your politics and preconceptions at home. Here’s what I saw: a line down the street to get into a small, independent record store on an unassuming block of Durham. Shelves stuffed to the max with RSD releases and other material half-empty by five hours in. Oh, and then there was the matter of the Merge Records show held in the parking lot, with Lagunitas providing beer-by-donation in the parking lot, NYCTaper recording the live sound, and our friends at WXDU streaming the site’s live mix. Maybe Record Store Day isn’t the only day of the year when a small independent record store ought to have a line out the door and three killer bands playing to hundreds of people in its parking lot. But it sure was a good excuse for it.

The day’s biggest draw, the Ex Hex, came out absolutely on fire. Out in front, Mary Timony and Betsy Wright fully committed to the band’s garage-rock aesthetic, making that modest parking lot stage feel like something much more. The 40-minute set covered most of the band’s very-well-regarded 2014 Merge release Rips, as well as a new song. Ex Hex made for the perfect draw for the day, with a sound that looks to vinyl’s 70s heyday without remaining mired in it. Almost every single one of the Rips songs is an upbeat earworm, from the bouncy leadoff to the set, “Don’t Wanna Lose” to the pop-rock of “Radio On”. But if the set showed off the band’s skill at the three-minute song, it also gave the ladies at least one opportunity to really shred, as “Beast” exploded the album version into a long-form rocker with a formidable guitar jam. Whether you were at Chaz’s for the records, or just for the live music, it was a hell of a day to celebrate music.

I recorded this set with a soundboard feed from engineer John Koelle combined with Schoeps MK4V cardiod microphones at the stage lip. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!

Huge thanks to Ex Hex, Merge Records, Chaz’s Bull City Records, WXDU, Lagunitas, and everyone who came out for this event.

MV & EE are an underground band in the purest sense, the kind of band who self-releases an LP after scads of others have come out on (admittedly obscure) labels and still presses tasty CD-Rs of their best-loved live sets. They exist on exactly that plane you might expect for a Vermont band, doing things their way, happy to earn the love the slow way, through swapped tapes and late-night listening sessions on porches and in basements. Their sound, a sort of far-out experimental folk, is homegrown and not easily replicated. Having seen the band twice this year already, I noticed now more than ever that no two MV & EE sets ever seem quite alike, and Matt Valentine and Erika Elder seem so in tune with one another that no song needs to hew to a single version, either.

This set at the  Three Lobed / WXDU Day Show at King’s during Hopscotch Music Festival was the only one by an outfit that had actually played a night-time festival set (the night before at The Hive), but that didn’t mean MV & EE were willing to dish out the same thing twice. In keeping with the vibe of this show, this set went to the more noisy end of the spectrum, especially on the delicious combo of “Roll On>Mayan Feedback” from this year’s self-released record Alpha Lyrae. Valentine and Elder have been on a bit of a roll lately tour-wise, so they may be off the road for a bit, but check back at their website for all the band’s latest info and releases, including their new seven-inch split with Woods with both bands performing Pink Floyd’s “Green is the Colour”.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK4V microphones on stage coupled with a soundboard feed from the King’s staff. The sound quality is outstanding. Enjoy!
