Desertion Trio: February 2, 2018 Trans-Pecos

February 5, 2018

Desertion Trio joined us at newly-licensed Trans-Pecos this past Friday to celebrate the release of their new album, Midtown Tilt, having done the same in their hometown of Philadelphia the night before. The album picks up in many ways where their excellent 2016 effort, Desertion, left off, oscillating between focused riffage and freeform jazz improv. This set showed off not only bandleader Nick Millevoi’s ample guitar skills, but gave broad berth to guest keyboardist Jamie Saft, who appears on both of the band’s albums, adding tremendous depth in the process. Of course, the focus of this one-hour sessions was on Midtown Tilt, including an outstanding rendition of “Jai Alai Noon” that gave Saft ample room to run., while set closer “Numbers Maker” coalesced into an extended freakout before tapering off into its final minutes. For those of us who’d seen the band before, there was much to love about this version of “Desertion and Arsonist’s Match,” which departed from earlier, Saft-less renditions we’ve featured but kept the song’s essential nature as a palette for extended interaction. As we’ve pointed out before, all of these fine musicians contribute to the music world in so many ways, so it is a special pleasure to see them come together here in New York. Check out Midtown Tilt, which is available directly from the band now.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK22 microphones at the stage lip, together with a soundboard feed. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Chris Forsyth x Nick Millevoi Duo: November 13, 2015 Trans-Pecos

November 23, 2016

Chris and Nick

Yep, you read that right: November 13, 2015. This one’s from the archives, at a fan’s request. This is Chris and Nick in Solar Motel Duo form, opening up for Lee Ranaldo the night after I had seen the full band opening for Futurebirds at the Bowery Ballroom. What can I say except that I’ve seen a lot of Solar Motel shows and this one’s something unique—just a pure dual guitar mindmeld on some Solar Motel tracks you know and love.

I recorded this at the stage lip, the left mic picking up mostly Nick’s guitar and the right Chris’s guitar. The sound is excellent. Enjoy!

Nick Millevoi’s Desertion Trio: September 15, 2016 Silent Barn

September 21, 2016

Since we sung the praises of guitarist Nick Millevoi and his Desertion Quartet after a show at Palisades earlier this year, Millevoi has not only been hitting the pavement with Chris Forsyth’s Solar Motel Band, but he’s been developing more of his own work as well. This show at Silent Barn (which has never looked or sounded better) gave us a taste of that new material as well as some of the songs we love from his current album, including the noise freakout “The Fire That Damaged City Hall.” This show was played as a trio, with Kevin Shea on drums and Johnny DeBlase helming the other guitar. Millevoi’s unique style is a joy to watch live, as it shifts effortlessly between choogling rock to free jazz, and it’s something that sets him apart in a more-than-worthy field of contemporaries. Being able to see Nick is still a too-rare treat, so we’re especially grateful to him for inviting us. We’re sure you’ll agree.

I recorded this set with Schoeps MK5 microphones split wide onstage (as you can see above) in the omnidirectional pattern. The sound quality is excellent. Enjoy!

Nick Millevoi’s Desertion Quartet: March 6, 2016 Palisades

March 31, 2016

Nick Millevoi's Desertion Quartet

You may be most familiar with Nick Millevoi as one-half of the two-pronged guitar offensive of the Solar Motel Band. But you may not know that Millevoi leads his own band of psych-jazz merchants, the Desertion Quartet, featuring Jamie Saft (frequent John Zorn collaborator), Ches Smith (whose extensive credits include Marc Ribot’s Ceramic Dog), and Johnny DeBlase (who also plays with Millevoi in Many Arms). Named for Millevoi’s upcoming album, Desertion, the group’s longform instrumentals oscillate between heavy riffage and and free-jazz freakouts. The Quartet opened up for the like-minded Sunwatchers earlier this month and treated the crowd to a preview of that album, which is due out May 20 on Shhpuma. “Desertion and the Arsonist’s Match” was recently written up by NPR and encompasses the breadth of the band’s range; but for my money it’s the eight-minute noise breadown “The Fire That Partially Destroyed City Hall” that’s most compelling. Either way, the players have the credentials and the songs to make Desertion one of this year’s most anticipated releases.

I recorded this set from the stage lip, combined with a board feed from Palisades FOH Ariel. The sound is outstanding. Enjoy!
