After catching our friends Howth at Cameo Gallery back in March, we were pleased to join them again to celebrate the release of their record, Newkirk at Mercury Lounge. This headlining set gave the band time to explore additional songs from Newkirk, and their tightness and timing were even better than just a couple of months ago. The set’s three additions from the record, “Deep In My Heart”, “Grand Marais” and “Keep Me Away From the Mirror” each showed another dimension of the band. I particularly favored the ballad “Grand Marais”, which derives its name from a tiny lakeside town in vocalist Carl Creighton’s home state of Minnesota. Howth will be playing out to support the new record, including two shows this weekend – at Open Road Rooftop in Manhattan on Friday, and Saturday at Pete’s Candy Store.
I recorded this set in our usual fashion for Mercury Lounge, with a soundboard feet from the experienced house engineer Kyle and Schoeps MK41 microphones. The recording is outstanding. Enjoy!
