We sang the praises of Jonathan Wilson after seeing him at Bowery Ballroom earlier this year, and we are very pleased to have had the chance to catch him again so soon at this year’s Mountain Jam. Jonathan was an ideal addition to the Mountain Jam lineup, serving up five songs of his breezy Southern California-inflected rock n’ roll to a welcoming crowd lolling in the midday sun. This set jumped around Wilson’s deep catalog, giving us only one track from his latest, Fanfare, hanging closer to his 2011 effort, Gentle Spirit. My personal highlight was a number off that record, the song “Valley of the Silver Moon”, which Wilson performed with festival organizer and jam partner du jour Warren Haynes. The twelve-minute song gave Wilson, Haynes and the band plenty of time show off their guitar skills, and set the tone for the rest of a beautiful, relaxing day of music.
I recorded this set with MBHO microphones from the “taping area” near the soundboard. As with other recordings from this day, there is a bit of phasing due to wind, but Jonathan’s vocals, and the music, otherwise come through loud and clear. Enjoy!
