When Heraclitus philosophized that (to paraphrase Plato’s account) you can never step into the same river twice, I’m absolutely convinced he was referring to the Oneida song “The River.” (That song notably also alludes to Heraclitus’ metaphor.) No matter how many times I see Oneida—and I’m assuredly approaching Deadhead-like devotion—I greet every new show announcement with overwhelming enthusiasm because I know I’m going to see a different Oneida than I saw last, or the time before, or the time before that, and so on all the way back to a bitter-cold, late-night set at Market Hotel over five years ago. Whether it’s new songs, covers, or old favorites, Oneida never play the same song twice. The proof is right here in NYCTaper’s immense archive.
Playing at The Bowery Ballroom, a more polished venue than they’ve played recently here in NYC, Oneida offer up another unique, invigorated set. They open with “Cedars” and instead of segueing into “Economy Travel” as they’ve done lately, they play a different new song, title so far unknown, that debuted last October. That’s followed by a twenty-minute jam, ostensibly a cover but I suspect not entirely a literal one. Their staggering version of This Heat’s “S.P.Q.R.” makes another welcome appearance and then the set concludes with what may be the most enthusiastic “Up With People” I’ve ever witnessed.
Oneida are about to embark on a rare European tour, paired with the O-side project, People of the North, who explore the harsher realms of Oneida’s sound. If you’re out that way, you owe it to yourself.
I recorded this set from our usual location in the venue, with the AKG’s clamped to the balcony just left of the soundboard, plus a board feed from Bowery FOH Kenny. The sound and performance are spectacular. Enjoy!
