Meridian Brothers: July 17, 2023 Tubby’s (Kingston, NY)

July 24, 2023
By

Long time Kingston/Hudson Valley residents all mourn the loss of our beloved venue, BSP. Thankfully the person behind all those great shows, Mike Amari, is still at it, bringing interesting and creative music to the area under the name Chosen Family Presents. He’s been mostly booking at the beautiful sculpture park Opus 40 but last week we were lucky to have him bring Merdian Brothers into Tubby’s for two sold shows.

Meridian Brothers is the brainchild of Eblis Javier Alvarez Vargas, the Bogota, Columbia based musician and producer. Eblis takes the traditional rhythms of the Carribean and Andes and fuses them with modern psychedelia and electronic dance music into an unforgettable neo-tropical groove that Gilles Peterson referred to as “twisted Cumbia that terrorizes the dance floor”. This is accurate; I’ve never seen the tiny live room at Tubby’s pulsating like this.

On the recordings Eblis plays everything, but in a live setting he is joined by an incredible band that fills this music with personality and life. The entire band seemed to be having as much fun as the audience. The bass player, Cesar Quevedo Barrero, had an ear-to-ear grin from the beginning of the set straight through the encore. This band is smoking hot and should not be missed

Meridian Brothers are taking a short break before continuing the tour in Austin and points West. If they are going to be anywhere near you, go. This was a highlight of the year for me and judging by the crowd’s response I’d guess that feeling was universal. I recorded both shows but I am posting the first night since the crowd’s enthusiasm and excitement can almost be felt in the recording. Special shout out to the Meridian Brothers front of house engineer Alejandro Araujo Larrahondo for an excellent mix.

Garcia Peoples: June 24, 2023 Tubby’s (Kingston, NY)

July 17, 2023
By

The Nyctaper team’s support of site favorites Garcia Peoples continues! This show was a bit of a one off at their home away from home, Tubby’s.

The set opened with “Break Me Down” which I hadn’t seen them play since the now legendary “Natural Factsrelease show in 2019. They worked through several of the Natural Facts tunes and two really spectacular pieces of improv very much worth your time.

Garcia Peoples has a bunch of excellent shows lived up for next month. They will be part of the absolutely LOADED line up at Raven Sings The Blue’s Deep in The Valley festival. Additionally they are playing several dates with William Tyler which may prove to be the tour of the summer. I’ll be at the Tubby’s date for sure. Hope to see you there!

I recorded this from my usual spot by the soundboard with the MBHO’s and a board feed from Tubby’s FOH engineer Will. Enjoy!

Zachary Cale: May 16, 2023 Tubby’s (Kingston, NY)

June 14, 2023
By

It’s been a while since Zachary Cale was last featured on this site but a glance at his band camp page shows he hasn’t been silent. In addition to the treasure trove of already available music he has new material in the works, and we were treated to a bunch of it during this performance.

While this is the last set to be posted from the Island House night at Tubby’s, this was actually the opening set of the night. With Robert Boston on keys and J.R. Bohannon on pedal steel Cale eased the audience into 5 straight new tunes. This is easy listening in the best sense of the phrase. On three separate occasions I sat down at my desk to mix this and then found myself, several minutes later, slowly drifting back to reality. I wasn’t “processing” anything; I was just enjoying the experience of hearing new music and allowing it to transport me to dreamland. The trio also treated us to a beautiful version of Neil Young’s “Motion Pictures”; a song perfectly tailored to Cale’s relaxed and comfortably honest vocal delivery. The set closed with “Dear Shadow”, the loan old song of the night, from 2013’s “Blue Rider”.

These unreleased songs will be released on a forthcoming instrumental based record Cale has in the works. I’m very excited to see how this flesh out. Additionally, he has several shows in the coming days including a July 2 bill with the excellent Stella Kola at Mama Tried in Brooklyn which is a must see if you’re in the area.

I recorded this from my usual spot by the soundboard with the MBHO’s and a board feed from Tubby’s FOH engineer Kyle. Enjoy!

Seawind of Battery: May 16, 2023 Tubby’s (Kingston, NY)

June 7, 2023

Seawind of Battery began as an outlet for Mike Horn’s experimental guitar works.  His 2022 album “Clockwatching” struck a nerve with folks keen on hearing ambient guitar explorations delivered with a country drawl.  In recent days Mike has added Jarrod Annis on lap steel.  Operating as a duo the project feels more substantial. The layered guitar parts acting as backing band now have countering “lead” voices in Jarrod’s lap steel and Mike’s Tele and it makes for a very exciting ride.

I’ve been waiting to see how this material would be reproduced live and I wasn’t disappointed. The set opened with “New Moon”, one of two new compositions we were treated to. The introductory guitar melody reminded me as much of the “ambient country” sounds Mike is often associated with as it did Robert Smith’s use of chorus to enlarge and reinforce his playing. “Some Kind of Symmetry” off his initial Island House release, “clockwatching”, closed the set. Waves of echo, delay and sonic pleasures washing over the crowd.

There’s a lot going on in Seawind of Battery land. As mentioned above Mike is working on new music for an upcoming album and there is a preorder available for the Clockwatching vinyl release. He also has a few shows lined up for the summer including one this Friday (use code: ‘room31nyc’ at checkout for a discount) with Kendraplex and an 8/17 date with the Royal Artic Institute at Fox & Crow in Jersey City that I’d love to see.

Emergency Group: May 16, 2023 Tubby’s (Kingston, NY)

May 31, 2023
By

Emergency Group plays jazz. But they also don’t play jazz at all. There are obvious reference points to 70s electric jazz but it’s boring to stop there; let’s add some progressive rock, some free improv and a sprinkling of post rock. The Brooklyn-based quartet brought all those influences and laid them bare on the stage at Tubby’s to close out an excellent evening of music courtesy of Island House Recordings

It took all of 90 seconds for the band to find a perch to launch from as drummer Andreas Brade sends the band pummeling forward. This began a 2-song 40+ minute ride so hot guitarist Jonathan Byerley was forced to play in a tank top and then apology to the crowd for “doing kind of a Bob Weir thing”. Electric piano leads and crunchy riffs buoyed by hypnotic bass lines and drumming equally prepared for fusion or hard rock; National Health or Spooky Tooth. Pick your poison. For the encore the band invited Seawind of Battery to join in. The already expansive playing took an atmospheric turn with the addition of Mike Horn’s looped guitar and Jarrod Annis’s lap steel.

Emergency Group has a show on July 23 with Tacoma Park at Mama Tried. Additionally, they are heading into the studio in July for new music produced by Chris Schlarb! All money spent on their Bandcamp is going directly towards that recording budget so, I implore you, dig deep. A Schlarb/Emergency Group collab is a truly exciting proposal.

Damon & Naomi: May 9, 2023 Tubby’s (Kingston, NY)

May 24, 2023
By

Followers of this site of a certain age (e.g., too old to be seeing rock shows in the middle of the week) will almost certainly have some association with Damon & Naomi’s work. Maybe you have a fond memory from the early 90s of the sun shining, your vision blurred just enough around the edges to let the light and new ideas in and, somewhere in the background, “Strange” is playing from a mixtape. Or maybe that completely hypothetical and totally not autobiographical scenario doesn’t apply, and you just appreciate incredible songwriting with harmonies that can only come from a lifetime of playing music with someone. Either way, we’ve got you covered.

Tubby’s is a small room and acoustic sets full of ballads can be complicated. On this Wednesday night, the crowd was completely engaged in the moment. We stood enthralled as they worked through songs from their most recent album, 2021’s, “A Sky Record” and beyond. Things got really interesting when they invited their co-headliners, Meg Baird and Charlie Saufley, to join them.

When Damon casually stated, “Tonight, you’re seeing two duos and two quartets. This is the first appearance of the first quartet,” the room knew special things were about to happen. With Meg on drums and Charlie on guitar they eased into the ghostly and beautiful “Seasons Without Time” and eventually brought the set to fiery close with the Galaxie 500 classic “Another Day.”

Elkhorn: March 28, 2023 Tubby’s (Kingston, NY)

Elkhorn at Tubby’s March 28, 2023

Readers of the excellent Raven Sings The Blues blog may have noticed a new mix of vibraphone-based music posted some weeks back. Rumor has it the initial draft of this collection, curated by Elkhorn’s Drew Gardner, clocked in at FIVE hours. This is not terribly surprising since Elkhorn does not rush to reach a point in their own music. They take the care and time to explore the corners and possibilities. They do this, as Jesse mentions at the beginning of this recording, by playing music with their hearts.

Their new album, On The Whole Universe In All Directions, sees Drew swapping his signature Tele for a vibraphone. While no one will mistake a vibraphone for a Telecaster, at its core, this still sounds exactly like Elkhorn. Deeply meditative, with both Jesse and Drew’s musical personalities front and center propping each other up.

Sadly, this night at Tubby’s did not feature any vibraphone but it did have Ian McColm on drums. This was my first opportunity to see Ian perform and I cannot think of a more perfect rhythmic companion for Elkhorn. His ability to play in, around and outside the guitar duo was remarkable. This trio is astounding.

The Royal Arctic Institute: February 17, 2023 Tubby’s (Kingston, NY)

March 1, 2023
By
TheRoyalArcticInstitute2023-02-17Tubbys

The Royal Artic Institute is a perfect band name for a mid-February show in (slightly) upstate New York. Outside it was wet and cold but inside the drinks were flowing, the spirits were high, and the music was outstanding. Another perfect night at Tubby’s.

The NYC based band has over 50 years of combined touring and recording experience including stints with certified legends like Arthur Lee and Roky Erickson. The musical experience is palpable; they float though compositions shifting feel and sound and carrying the listener through the journey. This is a fun one for headphones and a dark room.

The Royal Arctic Institute plays “cinematic instrumental post-jazz” or, as they put it on their band camp page, “post-everything.” Pidgeon holing their sound defeats the point. These are expansive, imaginative soundscapes made for dreaming. I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

I recorded this from my usual spot by the soundboard with my MBHO’s and board feed from Tubby’s FOH engineer Sam. The sound and performance are excellent. Enjoy!

Mikaela Davis: February 1, 2023 Tubby’s (Kingston, NY)

February 10, 2023
By
Mikaela Davis 2023-02-01 Tubby’s

The final night of Mikaela Davis’s residency took place during one of Tubby’s semi regular Dead nights. These events started simply; just a dude with a couple decks playing some Dead tapes. They have since evolved into not to be missed parties complete with all the things you would expect at this type of event. There were tapes. There was a “lot” scene. There was spinning. There was Drums > Space.

The first set of originals was comprised of mostly older songs not often played including “Do You Wanna Be Mine” from 2018’s “Delivery”. The set also features a brand-new tune, “Left Hand Path,” about a D&D Vampirate. Let’s get weird.

The Dead set opened strong with a super upbeat version of the Garcia classic “Cats Under the Stars” and jumped straight into “Shakedown Street” which had the spinners spinning. On more than one occasion I felt a dreadlock swing against my arm in wild, envelope filter induced ecstasy. The meat of this set was the transition out of “Crazy Fingers” into “Drums” that contained the most exciting and free playing of the evening.

Mikaela and the band have decided to bring this tour on the road for a, mostly, East Coast run beginning in March, and I highly suggest you hit a show. This was some of the best Dead adjacent music I’ve heard post Jerry. This is much more than another Dead cover band. They have brought authenticity, innovation, and fresh air to a vital part of the American songbook.

I recorded this from my usual spot by the soundboard with MBHO’s and board feed from Tubby’s FOH engineer Sam. Enjoy!

Mikaela Davis: January 25, 2023 Tubby’s (Kingston, NY)

By
Mikaela Davis live at Tubby’s 2023-01-25

Mikaela Davis has an interesting winter tour going right now. Two simultaneous three-night residencies in opposite corners of Upstate New York. Bold tour planning for January. Sometimes the path of most resistance offers the greatest reward and the reward for each night is a set of originals and set of Grateful Dead material.

Those that braved the Cold Rain and Snow (pun intended) on this Wednesday night were treated to a set of mostly new material from her album coming out later this year. The new songs already feel completely fleshed out offering the band chances to explore.

The evenings “Dead” set was a full cover of the 1972 classic “Garcia”. The first side of this record is loaded with absolute classics that were staples of the dead catalog for their entire career. It is near impossible to consider the Grateful Dead without “Deal” or “Sugaree.” The highlight of this “side” of the album was “Bird Song” enriched by the harmonic intricacies at play between harp and pedal steel.

The pedal steel/Harp combo offered some exciting ideas on how the second, and significantly headier, side of the record could be handled. It did not disappoint. If you listen to nothing else, please give the “Eep Hour > To Lay Me Down” section a spin. If you love side 2 of this album as much as me, I promise it’s what you want.

I recorded this from my usual spot by the soundboard with MBHO’s and board feed from Tubby’s FOH engineer Kyle. Enjoy!
